Howl was drunk.
Not drunk enough that he wouldn't deny it, but he was quite obviously so. There was a half empty bottle of whiskey in his hand as he laid on the couch in Vate's living room. The dark elf didn't seem to be present; and it was a good thing, too. No matter how much of a "normal teenager" Vate had said he wanted Howl to be, he probably didn't expect this.
The boy was wearing black jeans, torn at the knees. Untied sneakers poked out from underneath them; but perhaps what was most striking thing was something quite small compared to the rest of him. Covering his wrists on both arms were covered with brightly colored plastic beaded bracelets. To top that off, he wore a white shirt with a faint design. One could hardly tell what it was in this light.
He was flopped quite comfortably on the couch, his feet hanging over the arm, his head resting on a pillow.

Stasia was feeling, well, kind of awkward. It'd been a while since she'd been over here...it felt like it'd been a few weeks. Time never really held much bearing over the half-elf; the weeks and months just seemed to blend together. She supposed it had been a bit longer than she'd originally thought, though, so she came bearing apology-offerings: food. Her arms were laden with bags of food; macaroni and cheese, potato soup, ham, biscuits, a couple pies... She'd gone the whole nine yards, making sure there was enough for everyone.
"Hey!" she called as she opened the door, nudging it further open with her shoulder. "Sorry I'm-..." Blue eyes fell on the teen on the couch. ". . . Howl?" Surprise laced the young woman's tone, eyebrows raising before she glanced around for Vate.
Aesica stood behind her mother, stuck carrying one of the bags of food. This was so humiliating, being lowered to naught more than a common packmule! Her usually dark-blue eyes were nearly black, darkneing to match her unamused mood. This was common, undignified work! How dare Mother force her to do this? There would be consequences, mark her words! But, those could wait. For now. It was mid-mental-rant that the child noticed her older brother on the couch, a small smile working its way onto her face as one word came to mind...
...Food.

Howl looked up, sitting up rather groggily. "Mom?" he asked, managing to have a disbelieving tone though he was quite obviously smashed. "Hey. 'Sup? Where ya been lass six mounds, eh?" He paused, and seemed to study her. It took several attempts for him to stand. The floor seemed to be moving on him. "Mom, yous home!"
He tottered over to her, more stumbling than walking. "Mom! Misshed you. Gone so long... Thought you'd never come back." He dropped the bottle he was holding onto the floor, and moved to hug Stasia, seemingly oblivious to the food she carried. The smell of alcohol seemed to overwelm any scent he might have been wearing that day.
"Dad not here," he explained, as well as he could, stumbling backwards. "Dad went to see Thali," he shook his head. "Thali's getting big. Watermelon. Sounds good..."

Stasia blinked a moment before sighing. Her little boy was drunk? Oh... "Let me set these bags in the kitchen, alright?" she said, offering an awkward smile as she dodged the hug. "Don't want to spill the food every where, right? Right." Using her oh-so-cunning-evade-drunken-boy technique, she headed to the kitchen, hopefully to formulate a plan. Maybe call Vate? Oh dear...she hadn't expected to deal with this.
Aesica blinked, confusion spreading across her face. What in gods' names was wrong with her older brother? Why was her food acting so...different? Her nose wrinkled in distaste; she didn't like this. Not. One. Bit. No, not at all. "Howl, what has addled your mind? You've seemed to have lost your ability to enunciate properly." the little girl said, her tone scolding.

"Mmmkay," Howl said, nodding in the direction he believed his mother was in. He would wait to attempt to hug her, then, since he had quite clearly missed the first time. His attention was only briefly stolen by Ae, who he attempted to pick up. "You're 'eavy," he complained, stumbling backwards.
And slippery. He couldn't seem to get a good enough grip on his younger sister. How upsetting. He frowned. "Did you bathe in oil?" he asked, quite seriously. "You're lippery." He paused, and seemed to consider her question. "Called whitwiky," he informed her. "Very good. Specially with soda. Want some?"
He bent down to pick up the dropped bottle and missed. "I'll get you some. The bottle's 'scaping."

Aesica frowned up at the wizard, her already thinned patience starting to wane. "I did no such thing. Your coordination and motor skills simply seemed to be impaired." Her tone was cool, but calm. In response to his question, he got a curt shake of her head. "Brother Howl, I can't digest tangible food." she stated calmly before bending down and picking the bottle up. So, this was the cause of his odd behavior? Interesting. Her eyes lowered as she began inspecting the bottle.

Howl quickly grew bored with his younger sister's presence. He frowned at her and blew a raspberry. He made way for the kitchen, frowning as he missed the door. "Don't jump outta my way, door," he complained as he ran into the wall. He walked into the kitchen and put his arms around Stasia.
"Mom," he whined. "Do you hate me? Is that why you were gone for six mounds?" He paused, and hugged her again. "I mished you. Why were you gone solong?" At times, the boy seemed to slurr, and two words would connect and become one. "Mom, why were you gone? Don't you know we loves you? We mished you. I mished you."

Stasia blinked as the taller teen caught her in an embrace. She turned around to look up her son, hugging him. "Of course I don't hate you, Howl! How could you ever think that?" She said, petting the teen's hair gently. "I..well..." What was she supposed to say? That she hadn't known it'd been six months? That sounded stupid, even to her. "I didn't mean to be gone so long, kiddo. Forgive me?" she asked, looking up and ruffling the little wizard's playfully, trying to diffuse the awkwardness of the serious moment.
Aesica frowned as she was left in the living room alone. Hmph, ignore her, would they? The child was positively glowering, eyes narrowed. The girl returned her attention to the odd bottle she was holding. Apparently, the beverage was "alchoholic"...whatever that meant. And it smelled less than desireable...so why was Howl drinking it? It made no sense in her young mind.

Howl frowned. He didn't seem to believe his mother, even in his drunken state."Yous been cheating on dad," he accused, pulling away from her and swaying. He seemed to be having trouble staying up right as he stumbled backwards in attempt to get away. "Yous been gone a very long time. You left us. You left us."
He paused, and gave her another frown. He jabbed a finger at her. "You left us cuz you knew dad was sick. He's sick! And you hadna come see him. You were out with your buddies, hopping in--" He slumped against the counter briefly, only to pull himself back up and glare at his mother. "How could you? Hurtin' dad like that. Making him unhappy when he's sick. Thali been taking care of him. Been helpin' me with Devi and Leyla."
He made a failed attempt to leave the kitchen, to go back to talking to Ae. The door seemed to have escaped him. He felt for the dour and exited. "Wanna 'atch a movie?" he asked his younger sister, swaying slightly.

Stasia's concern and guilt changed to anger in a heartbeat. "I have NOT been cheating on your father. I've been nothing but faithful." she said, her tone as cold as the ice held in her eyes. "I didn't leave because he was sick. And for your information, I haven't been out with my friends. The only time I've been out of the freakin' house is to go to work, thank you very much." She had half a mind to go clean the notoriously-messy wizard's room out of spite, but decided against it.
Aesica looked up the drunken teen, arching one little eyebrow. "Well, Brother Howl, I suppose that'd depend on the movie and your ability to remain sitting up." the child said dryly, folding her hands lightly behind her back. "What did you have in mind?"

Howl ignored his mother with ease, opening the the kitchen door slightly and giving Stasia the middle finger. He didn't seem to believe her in his drunken state. Or maybe he didn't want to believe her. It was easier to believe she'd been cheating on his father than that she'd forgotten them. He paused to consider what movie he and Aesica would both enjoy. "Do you like Disney?" he asked. "Or violence? We could watch Lord of the Rings--or Narnia, or--" he tottered over to the couch and threw himself onto it, landing with a flop.
"So Ae," he said, looking at his younger sister. "Wha's been happenin'? Yous been gone a long time, you and Mom. Whatcha been doin'? Miss me? I bet you did. How could anyone not miss me?" He rose his voice for a brief moment.
"Hey, Mom! Come 'atch a movie with us!" There were no signs of his previous anger towards Stasia. None whatsoever.

Aesica pondered a moment. Disney? Heavens no. What did she look like, a child? Though, at the mention of violence, the little girl's face softened in contentment. "Lord of the Rings will do just fine, brother." she said politely, offering a small smile before climbing up on the couch. She settled herself in a comfortable position, perching on the arm of the couch. "Not much has occurred. Nattie still sleeps, and 'Zuba is having a baby." Dark blue eyes rolled to glance at the ceiling. "Yes, I missed you, Brother Howl." she concurred, if only to placate her food.
"Are you sure you want me to?" the half-elf called back, a scowl weighing down the corners of her mouth. Yes, it may have been childish, but she could have cared less. He'd hurt her feelings. Hmph.

"Cool," Howl said with a smile. "Devin and Leyla aren't allowed to 'atch it, cuz of the violence. But you and I can. We're old enough." Great, now he was using short sentences and breaking them up like a small child would. "So why haven't you come visited?" he asked, frowning. If nothing had happened, or nothing had changed, why had his mother forgotten about them? Why had she avoided them for six long months?
"Oh, 'Zuba's pregnant?" He asked. "Congrats." Last time he'd seen 'Zuba, he had just grown; he'd definitely liked her.
He frowned in the direction of the kitchen. "Mom, if you don't come 'atch the movie with us, I'll get mad," he warned her. "So come 'atch. I've missed you! Don't you want to spend time with me?" At that question, he sniffled. The alcohol seemed to be affecting his emotions. Which was saying quite a bit, since the teenager in question was heartless.

Aesica nodded, leaning back against the couch. "I would have come to visit, but it is a bit far for me to walk. My body isn't strong enough to make the trip safely yet." she explained, offering an apologetic smile. "Maybe you could come visit us some time? I get bored with having no intellectual equal in the house." The suggestion was paired with a doe-eyed, innocent look that just screamed, "Please, big brother?"
Stasia came into the living room, arms crossed and lip poking out in a childish pout. "I was under the impression you wanted nothing to do with me." she said, her tone huffy. True, she should have been acting her age, but...but she was allowed to be immature sometimes! "I want to spend time with you, but...." She sighed; drunks, what could ya do? She walked over, sinking to a sitting position in front of the couch. "What are we watching?"

Howl looked at Aesica doubtfully. Even in his apparent drunken state, it seemed he didn't trust his sister entirely. He knew she found him to be a tasty snack; she had 'nibbled' on him before. Though he was wary of her, and though he didn't trust her, he didn't seem to mind watching a movie with her.
Howl stuck his tongue out at his mother, obviously upset with his mother's childish behavior. Naturally he repaid her in kind. " 'Onestly. Are you the parent, or am I? Maybe you should start acting like a mother, instead of a younger sister." He said this very clearly, and wore a serious expression to match. If one hadn't known better, they would have thought he was sober. The smell of alcohol still lingered, however, and the glaze of his eyes gave him away. "Lord of the Rings," he added, moving purposely towards the entertainment center. He took a disk out of his bluray player, and placed one that'd laid on top of it in.
"Ready, Aesica?" he asked, looking to his younger sister.
