Fortunately the buses were still running for a few more hours. After a quick trip downtown the two Weaver women had a small wriggly dog in their possession. There was also about a week's worth of dog food, some toys, and a leash. The bus driver knew the Weavers well enough to know that if they weren't able to get on the bus with him, that they would essentially be stranded. With a half smile and a tilt of the hat, he suggested "Keep the dog in your coat for the ride so the other passengers don't ask about her."
Mommy nodded her head and uttered a soft "Thank you" as she stepped in. Yvette was the one stuck with the duty of keeping a wriggling puppy in her coat. She couldn't help but giggle and speak in an almost babying manner to the animal. "That's a good Dogby! We're almost back home!"
Of course, Dogby didn't know where they were going. All of this was exciting and new, and gosh, everything smelled so different.
The two women stepped off the bus once they made it to their stop. Yvette's coat looked as if it was about to pop open with some sort of face-hugging alien popping out. "Okay puppy! You can come out now!" The girl was giggling as she managed to take the puppy out from her coat and in her arms as they walked back to their home.
Once they got in the house, the girl set the Corgi down, who immediately set to investigating this new surroundings, nose going a mile a minute.
"I'll go set up her things... Mr. Darrow mentioned that she's trained to go to the bathroom outside... but that will require one of us to let her out... probably on a leash." With that, Mommy went to locate some sort of cushion that could be used as the dog's temporary bed.
The girl settled down onto the ground and looked around for the Corgi. "Dogby?" She scooted around until she located Mr. Darrows puppy who had managed to hide herself behind the drapes. "Oh no no puppy dog! That's not where you belong!" Timidly, she attempted to tug Dogby out from her curious hiding.
The evening was filled with random doggy antics, and in all honesty, it seemed as if Dogby wasn't planning on going to bed. There were too many things to investigate. Yet eventually, the corgi hopped onto the couch and curled herself up, finally seeming to pass out. Yvette discussed it with Mommy, and they both decided that she should sleep on the couch with the puppy, if only for tonight.
Three hours later, a high pitched whine managed to wake the girl up. It probably also helped that she had a wet nose getting shoved in her face. "Oh... hmmm? What?" The girl blinked before she remembered who was staying over.
"Oh... you need to go out, Dogby?" With a gentle laugh, the girl hooked the animal to her leash, then walked out the front door.
The world was dark outside, but just at that moment, bright lights seemed to be pulling up into the driveway. Dogby's eyes went wide as her body seemed to tense. "Oh... don't worry Dogby... that's just Daddy!" Rubbing at her eyes, she walked onto the scant amount of yard they had so the puppy could sniff about for the most adequate place to take care of business.
A large man lumbered forward, seeming genuinely surprised as the girl's presence in the front yard. "Yvette? What are you doing out at this time?" He stepped forward, but it just happened to be his luck that he stepped in a spot that the little dog had just deposited her goods. "What in the world?" He glanced down and saw perhaps the happiest doggy at his feet, sniffing the lump he had just stepped in.
"...um... sorry Daddy... um... you might want to leave your shoe outside."
"What's going on?"
The girl picked up the puppy and held the now wriggling Dogby in her Daddy's face. "Daddy, this is Dogby! She belongs to Mr. Darrow. He needed a dog-sitter, so Mommy and I volunteered! He gave us dog food and toys and... and... um..."
The corgi's tongue was flopping about as her nose twitched a bit in the large man's direction. He smelled sweaty. Not that Dogby would judge!
"Pumpkin... you and Mommy work during the day... so that means that I'll be stuck watching Dogby."
"...but Daddy... Look at her!"
It was easy to tell the man was trying to do quite the opposite of this. Yet when he finally looked, not one pair, but two pairs of puppy eyes were on him.
There was no way he'd be able to resist. "Fine, Baby Doll! Come on... let's get you back to sleep... since Dogby finished what she was planning to do out here!"
The girl nodded her head and shuffled back into the house while her father stopped at the front steps and took off his soiled shoe. He shook his head, then glanced back into the house at the girl as she crawled back onto the couch.
"Maybe this will be good for all of us..." he sighed before he made his way into the house. He could clean his shoe tomorrow.

The Cost of Naivety, Trust, and FaithWord Count: 812 "Our universe is dying, Yvette. Can you feel it dying? I will save it -- and you? You will play a part too."
Those words were the last thing the girl could remember when she woke up. Somehow she had managed to get herself in a hospital again. Why she was in a hospital, she didn't know. Heck, save for that memory of those words that seemed to drift throughout her mind in a strong tone, she didn't remember all that much about what had led to this moment. Hadn't she been talking on the phone with Daddy?
"...why d-don't I remember...?" Groggily, the girl began to look about the room. There was a faded teal curtain, probably something to separate her from another patient sharing the room with her. Neither Mommy or Daddy were around. She had probably woken up at a time that did not permit visitation. It felt strange that they weren't there, but they probably had things to do.
There was a Dogby to take care of after all.
The girl remain laying in her hospital bed until a nurse came into the room. She was a round woman with dark skin and rather colorful scrubs. She had a feeling to her of a jolly sort of kindness. As she set eyes upon the dark-haired girl, she noted her semi-alert state. "Oh... good morning sleepy head," the nurse practically cooed out as if she was trying to not scare a timid bird away.
"...uh... h-hi..." Timidly the girl attempted to wriggle a few fingers at the nurse in greeting.
Slicked red lips curled for a large smile. "No need to be shy around Maureen, baby."
If only she knew that pointing such out would typically make Yvette more shy. However, there was a question that just wouldn't go away no matter what.
"...what happened...? I... I don't remember..."
The nurse's expression changed to one that was slightly more concerned. Making her way closer, she lay a hand upon Yvette's head and began to feel about. "I do not recall there being any head trauma reported... does it hurt anywhere? Any bumps I should know about?"
Under the woman's hand the girl shook her head. "I don't think so... but... tell me... what happened? Why am I here?"
Maureen pulled away from the girl, but not before giving a motherly pat to the young adult's head. She began to tend to her typical nurse duties, but as she moved about the room tending to such things, she gave the explanation she could.
"From what I've heard... you never showed up home after you finished work several days ago. Your father tried calling your cell phone when you didn't show up, but according to him, he didn't even get connected to voice mail... just simple static. They tried to look for you at the mall where he had last spoken to you... tried all your favorite places to go... you know... stuff like that. After the 24 hour mark, they got the police involved. It took them about 48 hours, but they eventually found you on the other side of town. You were apparently unconscious in the bathroom of a rather pricey restaurant. Nobody on staff could explain how you got there. They figured you snuck in during the lunch crowd. Apparently one of the patrons went in to use the lady's room and came out shrieking about how there was a dead girl on the floor."
At this point Maureen couldn't help but laugh slightly. "I think she was exaggerating a bit... but you were definitely out of it. You were still breathing, but unconscious. You technically weren't malnourished, but it almost seemed as if all of your life had been sucked dry. You were shipped here where we've been nursing you back to health." The nurse, having finished her story, looked over to the girl.
"Oh... there's no reason to be crying, sweetie. You're safe now!"
Yvette had been so quiet with her crying during the story that not even the nurse noticed when she had started. She felt sick to her stomach with herself. Why did she always make Mommy and Daddy worry? She loved them too much to want them to suffer through all they had already with this girl. She had been a victim of an organ trafficking ring, she had gone into Anaphylactic shock, and now this unexplained disappearance. Every single one of those instances had landed her in the hospital.
The same voice that had been lingering in her ears seemed to come back to mind with less than encouraging words to offer. "The world around you is a terrifying place, Yvette. Naivety, trust, faith -- these are all the things that will be your undoing."
Yvette was starting to think that this was the truth. The world really was a terrifying place.
