Daddy had always warned her about the dangers of the city. Yet none of his warnings had ever told her about the actual monsters there. He had even encountered one, yet due to the concussion, he wasn't even certain it had happened in the first place.

Yet after a string of encounters with what she eventually learned were called youma, Yvette had decided that she needed to call in and check up with Daddy every time she went out. It actually felt quite miserable to realize she needed to check in so often because the city actually was even more dangerous than she ever imagined.

Having finished up with work for the day, the girl had dialed her Daddy up the moment she stepped out from Elizabeth's Secrets. The conversation was pretty basic. A simple series of answers to a series of basic questions. How had her day been at work? Was Cindy being mean to her again? Was she going to be home in time to see him off before he went to work? "Y-yes Daddy! You know I am walking to the bus stop right now!" The girl giggled a bit.

"I will see you when I get home. Love you Daddy!" With that, the girl pushed the button to hang up her phone. She was about to exit the mall, but it seemed as if there was some sort of gathering by the doors. Tucking her phone away in her purse, the girl meekly attempted to get through the group of people.

Quite unsuccessfully. There were lots of "Excuse me"s and "Pardon me"s, and plenty of people not even hearing her small voice. Somehow she managed to get part way through the crowd, but soon enough found herself stuck near a very familiar girl with dark cinnamon hair.

Yvette had always been good with names and faces, but the last time she had seen this face was in Barren Pines. Many things were hazy from then, but one thing she had remembered were the names of the others she had met there. This girl, her name was Fallon if she remembered correctly.

In her tiny voice, she asked "Um... uh... excuse me, F-fallon?"

Things had changed significantly for Fallon in the last few weeks. She had sunk lower than she had ever been before only to rocket upwards now in an unexpected and yet fitting way. When she wasn't in mirrorspace compiling more energy, she prowled the streets of Destiny City as Princess Ares, capturing and converting at every possible turn.

Unfortunately, her unmistakably strong and chaotic signature was a warning bell clear as day for most senshi. Nine times out of ten, she would surface out of a mirror only to feel all the light auras remotely in her range disappear -- like candles being snuffed out. It had been frustrating, very frustrating.

Perhaps that was why she felt compelled to lurk among the humans in her civilian form that day.

Or perhaps it was because she was trying to remember what it felt like to be one of these people.

In any case, Fallon forced herself to stand in a sea of weak civilian bodies with no glamour to hide her identity. It was a risk, but one of measured recklessness. There was a nagging part of her that prayed someone might attack her if only to give her a wonderful excuse to work out some of her pent up dark energy.

Instead, she got Yvette Weaver.

The two girls had attended Barren Pines together before the cover was blown off on the organ smuggling ring. There was very little that Fallon remembered from that time, but the face of the girl with purple hair was one of them. She stared blankly at Yvette, not smiling. It was as if she couldn't remember how to talk to people normally.

After an awkward pause, Fallon straightened and said, "Yvette." The name was spoken crisply, cleanly. There was no malice, but no joy either. It was as if the girl were some sort of specimen in a scientific experiment. "It has been awhile. You look nice." There was a clip in her tone, the forced cadence of a girl who had always been disgustingly polite.

"What have you been up to?" she said then.

The voice didn't even sound like her own.

The corners of her lips twitched into a faint smile as she heard her name mentioned from this girl. It was always comforting to know that she wasn't going crazy and not making mistakes on names and faces that went together. It was almost as comforting that Fallon at least seemed to remember her name. Some people who had been a part of that organ smuggling ring had problems remembering names at times.

The compliment, regardless of how forced, still made Yvette's cheeks turn rosy as her eyes somewhat fell to her hands. "Oh... um... thank you... I actually just finished up with work..." Her head bobbed up and down slightly, as if she was confirming this information not only to Fallon, but to herself as well.

Her eyes eventually lifted again to Fallon's before darting away a little. Direct eye contact was never Yvette's thing. "I was actually about to head home..." There was a slight pause before she asked something that had bothered her slightly. "Do you know why there's so many people at the exit? Is there some sort of special promotion going on?" Mrs. Ortiga hadn't mentioned a thing about any promotions that were supposed to be happening today, and though she was usually quite good about warning, she wasn't always 100% on the ball.

She wasn't certain why, but something felt weird about this whole encounter. Did it have something to do with the fact she hadn't seen Fallon for what was over a year? It might have had something to do with that. She didn't remember much about the cinnamon-haired girl in front of her, but the way she spoke didn't seem familiar at all. Things change she tried to tell herself in her thoughts, but she was only half convinced.

"Oh!" Right, Fallon had asked her a question. "Well... I finished up with school at Meadowview... and now I'm trying to save up for school by working at ... um..." In an even tinier voice, she confessed where she worked. "Elizabeth's Secrets..." It was never her choice in occupations, but she had to make do with what she had. Clearing her throat slightly, she then returned the question. "What about you Fallon? Are you still in school... oh... well... I mean on summer break right now... but still finishing up with school? Or are you heading to college in the fall?"

When Yvette blushed, it reminded Fallon of one of the few clear memories she had from Barren Pines. They were in the kitchen, and Fallon was making breakfast. She was flirting shamelessly with the purple-haired girl. Then, there had been bushing too, just like this. It should have aroused some sort of emotion in Fallon, but instead, she continued to stare at the girl with the same empty expression that her face had been frozen in at the start.

Fallon was behaving oddly. It took her just a little too long to answer questions. There was a little too much edge in her voice. "I've been on my own path," she said finally. "No school, no college. There are more important things for me to do than that. I grew out of my fixation on such mediocrity." The knuckles of her left hand whitened, fighting to grab her henshin pen. Remaining in this weak civilian skin felt like wading through lukewarm vomit to her.

"I am a new person," she said.

Her eyes darkened. "If you're headed home, do you want to catch a ride together? There are some cabs lined up." Fallon gestured into the distance. Money had never been an object for her, not even now.

There was something about Fallon. Something that seemed to set off a red flashing light somewhere in her subconscious, which Yvette only seemed to push out of her thoughts, deeming it a silly notion. Fallon wasn't being strange. No, Fallon had just changed in that amount of time since Yvette had last seen her.

That had to be it.

Politely, she offered a small laugh. "Well, considering all of the hoops the school district made me jump through to get my diploma, it isn't all that surprising that others didn't bother. A few others I remember from... um... then... they also didn't finish up with school." Despite her words, she couldn't help but feel a bit of pity for her current companion. Certainly, she didn't remember too many specifics, but she had always considered Fallon to be a very smart girl. She could have easily gotten a diploma. Perhaps her ego had grown much larger since she had last met, which would explain some of the comments which were leaving the poor dark-haired girl with many questions echoing in her mind.

The mention of the taxi cabs had the girl peer up to the other girl's eyes. That look seemed strange, but once again, Yvette ignored her own thoughts because she was probably worrying for no real reason again. It wasn't as if Fallon was a stranger (though she was acting quite strange). "Well... I usually take the bus, because I live very close to one of the stops..." There was a pause, as if she was hesitating to say the next part. Daddy would probably wonder why she wasn't on the bus like she had promised. However, Daddy never minded meeting any of her friends (as long as they were girls). It wasn't like anything bad was going to happen.

Fallon led Yvette just away from the hum and din of the crowd, but honestly... not too far. She was in a strange state. Her mind hummed with chaotic influence, her limbs tingled with the need to pull energy, but there was still an emptiness in her heart. Even the soft shyness that had once drawn her to Yvette began to irritate her.

Barren Pines was eons behind her. The girl who had lived and died there was dead. Fallon felt no remorse for the loss. And yet the reminder of that time bothered her, just as she remained bothered by her lack of clarity on just what had happened to them.

A bubble of rage popped in her chest. Fallon turned abruptly toward Yvette, and in her spin, the color of her eyes changed. Ribbons of fabric sprang out from her body, a twirling rim of skirts. Her legs were suddenly bare, capped off by a pair of heels. Her hands became claws, ears pointed, gaze fierce. And a massive staff appeared suddenly in her hands.

"The world around you is a terrifying place, Yvette," she said, her voice gravely. Behind them a few civilians began to scream. A girl had just become some sort of monster in the blink of an eye. Ares didn't seem to notice. "Naivety, trust, faith -- these are all the things that will be your undoing." She gripped her by the collar and wrenched her off of her feet.

"Our universe is dying, Yvette. Can you feel it dying?" Ares could, she felt certain of it. "I will save it -- and you? You will play a part too."

Behind them, people began to run forward, but it was too late. Ares dashed forward through a mirror and disappeared, taking the purple-haired girl with her. Yvette would spend three days trapped in a mirror, giving her energy to the Dark Brimstone Crystal. Civilians were not useless. They had a purpose. Perhaps one day Yvette would understand how she had helped save the world... if she could fully remember exactly what had happened.
