[SOLO] #20 I've Got to Break Free 487 words
He sat at the now-empty table for a long time, the coffee in front of him forgotten and abandoned. He was unfocused and unaware, oblivious as the crowded café slowly began to empty out, instead grasping for the memory that was still so fresh. This was a popular little shack, and it had been packed to hell and back when he’d wandered in here about half an hour ago. Triumphantly, the gym teacher had snagged a table and was fully enjoying his flawless victory.
That was when she showed up.
Drew hadn’t bothered to give the girl more than a cursory glance at first, dismissing her as yet another face among thousands within the crowd. But most faces didn’t pause by his table, didn’t meeting his gaze with an almost embarrassed twist of their lips, and ask, “You look a little lonely. Mind if I join you?” This nameless face had blonde, wavy hair she’d pulled back to keep out of her face, bright eyes, and a smile that made his stomach twist like he was about to be sick. And that was how Andrew Collins first met Nicole Evans.
He couldn’t remember the last time he’d talked so long with a random stranger and enjoyed himself, or noticed the particularly interesting hazel-green of their eyes, either. Every wry comment he made to crack, she countered with a sharp retort and a cheeky grin that threw him for a loop, and eventually he just sank back in his chair with a laugh. An hour blew by before she seemed to notice the time, apologizing profusely—she was a student at Sovereign Heights, had a big test today, but it was very nice talking to him!
He remembered instinctively asking if she’d like to go to a movie some time, maybe catch a bite to eat. A brow arched at him for a moment, and he swore those pale cheeks flushed pink with pleasure before she’d casually pulled a scrap of paper out of her purse and scribbled her number on it. Then, with a smile she’d slipped through the crowds and had gone, leaving Drew staring after her almost bewilderedly.
What the hell had all that been about?
With a groan, the man buried his head in his hands for a moment, trying to sort it all out. The last time he’d actually flirted with a girl and meant it... That’d been back with Ursula, in high school. Oh, Christ. Staring at the piece of paper in his hand for a moment, Drew thoughtfully tucked Nicole Evans’ phone number into his pocket and got to his feet, tossing the cold coffee into the trash as he went.
Speaking of Ursula, the woman owed him anyway. He didn’t remember the first ******** thing about dating—especially not when, for some bizarre reason, it felt strangely important that he make a good impression and not ******** this up.
