Solo: Strange Things Happen

“I couldn’t henshin.”
The green haired girl quirked an eyebrow at the statement, looking confused. “What happened?” Eve was glad Serenade didn’t question her; maybe she hadn’t pronounced the words properly. She took it as that her Princess had enough faith in her to know that she had enough experience with henshining and therefore couldn’t mess a simple task like that up.
“It was in the corn maze thing.”
“Ah.” Serenade blinked. Eve had asked her earlier if she wanted to go along, but her Princess had politely declined. ‘Barren Pines was enough of a haunted house maze for me in this lifetime.’ Serenade had said, shaking her head. But in retrospect, Eve thought, it meant that Serenade probably wouldn’t have gotten frightened of the monsters in the maze. She could just imagine her standing unperturbed by the scarecrow and the shadowy monster… thing. Eve shuddered, remembering the goo it had spilled on her shoes.
She continued. “I ran into this huge hulking shadow monster thing and couldn’t henshin up.”
“A youma?” The younger girl questioned.
Eve shook her head. “I don’t know. But it was strange… later I threw a pumpkin at it and… it exploded. Like it was a bad chemical reaction or something.”
“A special effect, maybe?” Serenade offered.
“I thought so too.” Eve said slowly, spinning her henshin pen around with her fingers. “But then why couldn’t I transform when I was in there?”
“The Negaverse.” The conclusion Serenade came to was not a suggestion posed, but a firm answer. And it wasn’t really surprising, the blonde girl thought, seeing as the Negaverse was the cause of everything strange and perturbing in the city. The youma, the exploding building, Barren Pines… although they weren’t the ones who had caused the coma. Although it was unsettling to find out that someone on their side had inadvertently caused it, they were gone now. Only the Negaverse was left.
Right?
There were so many uncertainties in this career, Eve mused. “No one got hurt though.” Unless you counted the poor scarecrow dude she had accidentally made unconscious when fighting back…
“So then what was their motive, you mean?” Serenade asked, a confused look settling upon her features. “I don’t know. The Negaverse is extremely unpredictable.”
“Yeah, but what we know is that they want to take over the world, steal starseeds and set monsters loose. Why would they target some silly Halloween thing?”
“Halloween is a good cover for them.” Serenade said, frowning. “Strange things can happen and people will think some kids are merely playing tricks.”
“The city’s still wary though.”
“But now you can transform, right?”
Eve nodded, holding up her pen, and after the phrase was uttered, Super Sailor Flora stood before Serenade Soriano. “It’s still strange though.” She confessed, giving her Princess a curtsy before turning and heading for the window. “I thought you might like to know.”
With that, she disappeared out of the Crystal dorms, going on her usual nightly patrol on the rooftops. Was it a good idea to burden Serenade with this strange tidbit of information she had found? Or was it that Eve just needed someone to talk to and missed staying in Crystal with everyone else that she went back?
Sometimes, Flora thought, gazing at the dark buildings before her, I think I still don’t know myself.
