Melee

“What the hell could occupy a box like that?” Cody asked, eyeing a strangely shaped and very long box Ary was carrying out of the attic and to her room. She had been moving things out of her storage and into her room far more frequently and nobody was really sure how she managed to get all that stuff in there. “Hm? Just a sword. Why?” she asked, gripping the box tighter. There was no way in hell he was going to get his hands on a relic like the one she had.

“Can I see? Or perhaps-” “Look, not touch,” Ary growled, eyes flashing darkly as the case opened. There were actually two swords within, crossed at the middle. The top one was a bluish white color while the bottom one was a deep navy color and shimmering from black to a slightly lighter navy color. Before the teen could even get over the sheer power and beauty that emanated from them the case was snapped shut again, hiding them from view.

“I can teach you how to fight with a sword, but I’m not giving you these or making one for you. You have to earn the right to have such an artifact first,” Ary commented, wondering if he would take the bait. He was due for another class and she figured the very idea of a powerful object in his possession would appeal to his greedier side. Besides, she wanted to do something different for a change and it sounded pretty fun. What could such a thing possibly hurt, right?

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Apparently a lot as their wooden practice swords snapped once again, sending pieces flying at their faces. “I swear, if I don’t have a single splinter in my face I will be shocked,” Ary grumbled, throwing her splintered sword half into the small pile of swords they had broken already. After breaking their first, much nicer pair, she had switched to the bulkier and cheaper kind. Not to mention she could make them easily enough from some scrap wood lying around. And they weren’t breaking because Cody was terrible or really good it was just because the two of them just tended to... swing a little harder than totally necessary. And seriously, Cody wasn’t all that great even for a beginner.

“Well Cody, you’ve gone through all my cheap training swords so it’s time to call it a day. We can continue some other time when I have something a little stronger for us to use,” Ary said, gathering up the fragments to burn or mend depending on how totally destroyed they were. “Did I do well then? Does that mean I get a sword?” Cody asked, handing her his sword pieces to add to her box. His greedy and excited look faded to match the scowl Ary gave him. “No. You were alright, but not amazing enough for me to give up something so valuable. Maybe another time as these things are more of a gift, not a reward. And I wouldn’t give anyone a sword for breaking all of my training ones,” she grumbled, setting the box down on the table inside.

“Whatever. That’s ******** lame for having to deal with you all the time,” Cody grumbled, glaring darkly at the female as he shoved past.

“Likewise.”

~*The King of Thieves Strikes Again*~

It was the day, the day where they were to rob the store previously agreed on. Edes may have stolen the book of plans, but they weren’t forgotten. Had the boy taken the list they had for supplies and such, there was no telling what might have happened to the poor sloth boy behind the Thieves Guild’s leader’s back. Despite the rule that they were to keep the boy safe and not to hurt him, their greed was far more powerful than the leadership they were given. Thankfully, the boy had only taken the building layout blueprints and not that and set them back a few weeks as they rethought the plan and rewrote what had been in the damned thing in the first place, but in the end it was a good thing it happened strangely enough.

Turned out the owner had left on vacation for a week and left the store dark and armed to the teeth like they had expected since it was somehow leaked something would happen while he was gone. Or he just assumed something might happen with his precious store a sitting duck. Ah, well, no owner meant no one calling the police for seeing shadows or irritating dogs making a ruckus and alerting someone ELSE and calling the police. Or animal control which was almost as bad. Being a thief was seriously dangerous work nowadays, especially in the ghetto areas.

“K.O.T, team Alpha is in position and team Beta is ready to go on your signal. Patrol teams have been set up in the four quadrants as specified earlier at all entrances to the area. The lock has to be picked, since the idiot switched out the door for a reinforced metal one like you had thought he would. However, there are bars on the windows suggesting he was expecting us or something far worse. Then again, what could be worse than us now that we’ve got an expert such as yourself?” a deep voice spoke quietly from the shadows of a nearby building, amusement and sarcasm drenching his commentary. Sure they respected the teen, but he was young and it was a tough dog eat dog world and nothing changed that. Then again, their “boss” seemed to realize this, making every new mission far more rewarding than the last. Still, they all waited with bated breath for him to fail where the true claws emerged and blood was spilt as a new leader emerged.

The one referred to as K.O.T simply nodded, blue-green eyes flicking open to survey the building. Sure enough, both sections of their group were in position and ready to go. Each had a small radio they had picked up from their last heist at an electronics store. Strangely, security rather sucked in comparison to some of the lower end food stores. Then again, the stuff was severely outdated and mostly broken in some way or another. But, it served its purpose well.

“Very well. Remember, five-five-three-two-six. We can’t afford another screw-up,” he muttered in response, leaping down from the ledge he had been on and into the pale moonlight. Slowly, the teen’s features began to stand out. Peachy feathers, pink-red hair, leathery wings... Cody glanced up at the half-moon far above with a frown. It would have been better with a new moon, but it was the best they could do. There wasn’t going to be a storm for a while and it was now or never. Carefully, he made his way over to the backdoor while making sure to look up at any camera’s that he passed. All their wires hung limp, having been cut and essentially making them invisible. At least, so he thought as his pale hands pulled out his lock-picking tools and set to work on the door with extreme expertise. King of Thieves indeed.

~*Shadai's Journal*~

Dear Journal,

Cody’s been acting really weird lately and it’s been bothering me... Er... Weirder than usual, anyways. Usually he goes out and rarely returns except for meals and to sleep every now and again but... Nowadays he rarely leaves his room save for the occasional trip to get a small snack or use the bathroom. Azrael’s told me he doesn’t actually eat or sleep much and how he knows that is well beyond me. However, I have to take his word for it as my room is downstairs on the main floor and well away from theirs.

Besides all these strange actions and such, he’s definitely paler and stranger still, Noel won’t answer my emails and no one answers the phone. Something had to have happened a few nights ago between them to piss off Noel. Something really bad as I wasn’t fully aware the man could actually express such anger in a way that affected Cody...

*the pen line trails off the page, as if slowly slid off while staring off at something and then followed by a huge space*

Azrael has to be right; there are dark circles under Cody’s eyes and he has definitely lost a little weight. I just tried talking to him and got the creepiest blank stare back as if he didn’t understand me or wasn’t entirely there. He has to be really upset about something as I’ve never seen such a look before except described in romance novels... I doubt this was all caused by Ary thinking about moving out.

~*The Perfect Plan*~

Silence. Deathly silence. A silence of which had never been bestowed upon the house. Nothing stirred, nothing moved, nothing slammed and no voices of any gender or age spoke to break it. It was just that, pure unchanging silence. One could have sworn the house was abandoned, had it been coated with dust and the yard overgrown but that wasn’t the case. It wasn’t in a ghost town, uninhabited for years save for the residents that decided to up and leave. No, the occupants had gone out, leaving the house seemingly empty for the semi-pleasant weather outside.

Then, out of nowhere, a lone creak pierced the silence like a gunshot. Then the house grew even quieter than before for the briefest moment, followed by another loud creak. It was as if someone was constantly taking a hammer to a mirror over and over again, slowly repairing itself after each blow. Had the story been told, the teller would have been called a liar for one did remain within the ancient walls though at times nothing more than a ghost. Yet the host could claim to have two souls living within one body and not be far off. Today was different, however, as the two halves of a whole finally agreed on one thing; they had to get their precious love to return.

All had been planned out ever since the horrible event had occurred. Down to the minute, everything was going according to the plan they had concocted. It was foolproof, calculated from every which way and that and triple checked. Slowly, pale bare feet moved down the staircase and towards the kitchen as if in a trance. The slow, rhythmic footfalls exactly placed, exactly timed and all according to plan. It had to for everything had to be set right once more, the balance of light and dark returned for life truly had no meaning without its precious light...

Dim sunlight glinted against the cool metal of the stolen knife as it slid from the hidden sheath. It was the one thing that could bring back the light, he was sure of it. If it didn’t... Neither one was certain whether the host or the mind would survive such harsh rejection, leaving the other to be forced to live in the cruel darkness that crept ever closer already. Another blade would be found, a blade that could pierce the beating dead heart and cause all thoughts to cease in their existence and allow the darkness to take hold forever like it was oh so tempted to do.

The location... It was perfect all around and was marked justly so in ink upon the host’s body. It was perfect. The blade would slip in and out, narrowly avoiding all organs and major veins and yet stain the floor an eerie red. There would be no pain. Nothing could amount to what they felt at the mere idea of rejection and denying of that light, that precious light. Nothing. They’d give all they had and more to make things right once more. And yet, a piece of him wouldn’t, couldn’t, unable to relinquish everything for nothing more than light and the warmth it brought that they so desperately needed.

But perhaps it would have as the blade struck flesh and disappeared within, bathing the shimmery metal with blood. Nothing, not the pain nor shock of the very sight of the host’s own blood, managed to wake the teen from the single-minded goal it was focused on. They wouldn’t allow it to as bloodstained knees hit the tiled floor, the rest of the host falling moments later. A soft clank and click sounded in unison as the knife fell and the door unlocked. All according to plan.

A deep coldness seeped through their bones, darkness descending upon them and ceasing all thought right as a scream of terror and horror ripped through the house just like the cold, cold blade ripped through flesh. All according to plan, they said as their final thought. It was all according to plan, the perfect plan, the plan to return to the light of another. It was perfectly planned...

“Cody! ARY! Call 9-1-1! Cody wake up! Oh god, CODY! CODY WAKE UP!!! CODY!!!”

~*... I'm not going to say anything.*~

’ I know that your powers of retention are as wet as a warthog's backside...’ Cody thought, reciting the song within his mind as he snuck around the Ashanti household. Boxes of all sorts and sizes, as well as trash bags, littered the yard as everyone prepared for Ary and Aenira to move out of the small mansion and into her own massive dwelling. Apparently it actually had several powerful air conditioners and, from Aenira’s bragging, snowed sometimes.

’But thick as you are, pay attention! My words are a matter of pride.’ Although, more strange than snow inside of a house had to be the fact the boy actually knew the lyrics to the popular children’s movie. Not just the main chorus either, but the entire song down to the voice the characters used. Soft, sneaky steps and the soft rustling of grass was all that revealed his location as he sneaked around and to the door. The house and occupants remained still and quiet, the people within either sleeping or doing something quiet in the basement or living room.

’It's clear from your vacant expressions, the lights are not all on upstairs,’ he continued, smirking softly as his hands finally found the doorknob. The cool, hard metal contrasted greatly with his warm, soft hands. Granted, how his hands managed to remain moderately soft after all he had done was a surprise in itself.

’ But we're talking kings and successions. Even you can't be caught unawares!’ Ary’s ears twitched, a soft frown gracing her features. Aenira was at a friend’s house and no one else watched Disney movies except on the rare occasion.

’So prepare for a chance of a lifetime. Be prepared for sensational news~ A shining new era is tiptoeing nearer...’ Ary looked up from her book and at the TV. No... it wasn’t coming from that and Shadai had retired to her room an hour ago so the TV in the basement hadn’t been left on.

’ And where do we feature? Just listen to teacher. I know it sounds sordid, but you'll be rewarded when at last I am given my dues.’ No, it couldn’t be the TV. She would have heard it earlier had someone forgotten to turn it off. And she doubted Azrael had snuck down...

’And injustice deliciously squared! Be prepared!’ Ok, so this was getting really strange. The voices of varying characters filtered through the female’s mind as clear as if being broadcasted in the other room. If said other room was outside...

’ It's great that we'll soon be connected. With a king who'll be all-time adored. Of course, quid pro quo, you're expected, to take certain duties on board.’ Wait... Only one person would be outside or nearby sneaking around making no noise whatsoever save for his thoughts...

’The future is littered with prizes and though I'm the main addressee, the point that I must emphasize is... You won't get a sniff without me!’ Cody snuck through the kitchen, making sure the door shut without making a single sound. He had gotten good with that after being caught so many times by someone lying in wait in the other room.

’So prepare for the coup of the century. Be prepared for the murkiest scam! Meticulous planning, tenacity spanning, decades of denial, is simply why I'll...’ Ary’s eyes slowly moved across the page of her book to peer curiously off to the side that faced the stairs. She saw the pink hair flicker in and out of view from the corner of her eye and shock instantly settled in at how strange of an occurrence this was.

’ Be king undisputed, respected, saluted, and seen for the wonder I am! Yes, my teeth and ambitions are bared! Be prepared!’ Cody snuck past the couch, completely wrapped up in the song that plagued his mind as he made his way up the stairs.

“Be prepared indeed...” Ary muttered, shaking her head. That kid was seriously strange.

~* Enough *~

“Cody, we have to talk,” Shadai called to the boy as he walked by on his way to the door. She had to pause, though, as his new shirt appeared to be shredded or ripped in many places and… wait, was it backwards?

“If it’s because of my shirt I-“

“No, it is because of how you have been acting lately. You never remember things and it is as if you are two different people. That shirt just worries me and confirms my beliefs,” Shadai explained, interrupting him in the middle of his seemingly calm reasoning.

I act like two people? You’re ******** crazy,” Cody snapped and froze as soon as the words left his mouth and echoed around the room, that ever present hint of insanity lurking deep within. “Did I just…?”

“Yes. Sit,” the Egyptian commanded, pointing at the couch in front of him. It wasn’t hard to tell she was upset as her English degraded to simplistic words coated with a rich African accent.

Cody complied and sat obediently upon the furniture indicated, a little confused and worried himself. Was he really two people in one body? No, that was silly and yet he saw evidence of it all over the place. Things missing, him appearing in unusual places, words being said that he never spoke….

“I don’t get wha-Hi Azrael. –t the big problem is. Azzie get your-What’s with-a** out-that look?-of here,” He half snapped, half talked pleasantly and almost worriedly. It was a wonder how he didn’t trip over his own words or ended up sounding even stranger than he did. Then, as a dominant personality set in, that dark and almost insane look returned to his face that had been ruling him since the end of his pre-teen years.

“This es de final straw. I shall take you to de facility an-“

“NO!” Cody snarled, leaping to his feet. He had yet to notice Ary moving into the room and standing nearby like a lion ready to pounce. “I’m not going! I don’t want to go! I’m fine I swear! …And if you ******** try I-HEY! LET ME GO b***h!” he snarled, pitch changing drastically as his personality flicked back and forth. As he made his way to the door to make his escape, a white blur was all he managed to see before he suddenly found himself pinned to the ground with Ary sitting on him.

“You’re going and no amount of yelling or kicking will change her mind. Are you going to-“

You can kiss my a**, b***h. No ******** way I’m going,” Cody snapped in response, trying to free his arms and remove the female from his back and failing miserably. Her hands were practically welded to his wrists and the floor. If only he was a child of wrath and not greed then perhaps he could have thrown her off by now. They were really strong, weren’t they? They were probably stronger than any child of greed or patience…

“You’re going and that’s final. And no, being a child of either wrath demons wouldn’t give you any sort of advantage,” Ary hissed, pulling Cody’s arms back and creating a sort of icy handcuffs that linked his arms together from his wrists to his elbows. Despite being made of ice, the smoky white-blue material emanated no chilling temperatures so as to feel more like really stiff plastic than frozen water.

Cody glared at them, kicking and flailing and screeching curses and various partial phrases as Ary hoisted him over her shoulder and carried him to the car. Then, in an attempt to keep him still and silent and from others calling the police, tied his ankles together and gagged him.

“Yanno, I didn’t exactly expect this to take as much effort as it did. Told you he was a little loony in the head,” Ary commented, glancing at Shadai who happened to be driving.

“Silence. One word more and you walk.”
