Apologies are Hard
Clary frowned down at the piece of paper in front of her. How did one write an apology note to someone who had made it clear - through a third party, even - that they no longer wanted anything to do with you?
Still, she had to try; if for nothing but the sake of having done it. After all, even after she’d been stupid and thoughtless and dredged up an act that Alois clearly wanted to forget about, he’d taken the time to gather her bits of things from across the city and include little notes with them - little memories that she could make her own. He’d remembered her frustration about the loss and given her something to salve it, even though she had given him every reason to completely forget she existed. She owed him her best attempt at an apology, even if she was too cowardly to do it face to face and be rejected firsthand, and instead would be doing ti by note, via a proxy. (Poor Gabriel, playing messenger between them when he’d made his discomfort clear.)
So she sat and stared at a blank piece of paper, a stack of further ones next to her because undoubtedly she’d get frustrated and chuck one - or, more likely, several - out.
How the hell did she even address it? To Alois, or to Bischofite? They’d been civilians when she had opened her damn mouth and upset him, spoken thoughtlessly and probably ruined what could almost have been called a friendship; or as close to that as she could expect from him. Maybe that should inform her choice?
Alois, she began, and then groaned and crumpled the sheet and tossed it away because she still wasn’t certain which name to use. At least Gabriel was out of the apartment and didn’t have to witness the utterly horrific display of her agonizing over a stupid note that probably wouldn’t mean anything in the end. She rested her forehead on her arm, and chucked her pen across the room after the piece of paper.
It was totally unhelpful towards fixing her writer’s block, of course, but it did feel good for a few minutes until she realized she’d have to stand up and get the stupid thing so she could actually write the note.
“Damn it,” she grumbled to herself, pushing off the table and walking over to pick it up. She spent a good minute standing there and staring at her pen, as if it would somehow provide insight into her problem. It wasn’t helping, not really, so she walked back to the table, sat back down, and grabbed another paper.
It was stupid to agonize so much; Alois would likely burn it or throw it away, and either way it would be left unread, but on the small chance that he actually did… Well, she didn’t want to ******** things up even further, though she wasn’t sure that was possible.
A soft sigh passed her lips, and she made another attempt at writing.
Alois,
I realize that the last time we spoke, I was thoughtless and cruel, and while that wasn’t my intention, that doesn’t change the fact that I was. I would like to apologize for my clumsy words, and also thank you for taking the time to put together a box of memories for me, even if I gave up any right to your time and your kindness.
Yours, Clarisse
She frowned down at the product. It seemed trite and stupid, but everything about this was trite and stupid. She was writing an apology note to someone who didn’t want to receive it, and sending it through an intermediary who she’d have to guilt into helping her because she was far too afraid of rejection to risk it in person.
Stupid, desperate, idiotic - and also the only thing she could think of.
She folded the note and tucked it into an envelope, then set it down on the table.
Now she just had to wait for Gabriel to get home so she could pass it on for delivery.
