Time for a little celebration
Time for a little celebration
It may have taken forever and a day to accomplish, but he did it. He did it.
Perhaps the only one that was capable of being more overjoyed over this revolution was Nina, and she would be quick to say otherwise. This was more of a preservation method, however -- her reasons weren't bound by any sort of greedy emotion, but could easily be strewn as such. Most people weren't happy for another, and another alone. If Nina had said otherwise, it was almost assured that someone would draw attention to the faulty foundations beneath the statement. Despite such a record, there wasn't anything other than sincerity that would have sprung from her mouth.
However, the relief that Ephron was feeling over finally landing a job -- even though the it was a rather mundane one at that -- couldn't have come at a better time. With how life had been made into a punching bag these past few weeks, the young man was finally able to catch a break for the both of them. True, the effects wouldn't come immediately into play, but it was a start. In fact, it was a rather large leap.
"This mean we can get the electricity bill payed for before it's shut off this time?" Nina queried, a nudge to her voice. Ephron gave a sheepish wince to the question, but Nina's smirk remained. She was more understanding than she led people to believe. "I think that should be our next goal," she reiterated with a laugh.
But Ehpron remained apologetic, despite the context. After a pause, he tried to explain, "I was only paid a little at the start, nothing enough for something like--"
"It's fine, it's fine, I know," she said, batting at the air, "One step at a time, right? You always say stuff like that. Honestly, as long as we will be able to do that, it's fine."
Maybe she had grown up some since the subject had surfaced, but she wasn't about to admit it. Rather, optimism was able to creep in more, now that things were looking on the bright side. There was always the nagging voice in the back of her mind, reminding her not to get too caught up in the emotion, but she pushed it aside for now. Today was a day to be happy, for celebration, and whether or not her judgment was going to see it that way or not, that's how the day was going to stay!
As such, they were going out to commemorate the occasion with a little something. Well... come to think of it, was Ephron really getting anything? Frowning, she glanced up to her guardian, the man still able to hold height over her despite being so short himself. "Umm... Ephy? What are you gonna get?" she asked, stepping lightly where her words tread.
He responded in kind with a shake of his head, causing the girl's frown to deepen. "I can't think of anything that I'd really want to get," he tried to explain.
However, his response was ended prematurely, "Then I don't think I should get anything, either. If this is suppose to be some sort of little party where the man of honor doesn't get anything while everyone else does... well, I don't want a part of it."
Her statement was firmly-set, and there may have even been a hint of a pout on her face by the end. This was the main reason that, despite knowing better, Ephron couldn't help but laugh. Nina didn't pout outside of being overly-dramatic, and when she did so, it was a sure sign that she was feeling better emotionally. She stuck her tongue out at him to counter his reaction, but he continued to attempt a serious air, "If you want me to, I can get something for myself later, okay? I want you to get something. You've had a rough time of it lately, and I need to make sure you do something nice for yourself every once in a while." Nina inhaled sharply, opened her mouth to argue, but was held back by one last comment, "And I'm not leaving until you do."
Nina's look probably couldn't have been more scathing at the order. That is, unless she meant it, then there could have been potential. Ephron couldn't restrain another chuckle. "Fine, then. But I'm going to pick it without your help. You're just going to have to deal with my choice," she stated matter-of-factly. Two can play at this game, and she wasn't going down without a fight.
Not that she was going to have to. It was her choice to get her ears pierced anyway. She also didn't give an arbitrary answer to which she ultimately decided upon, given that the dangling daggers caught her eye almost instantly.
