New Year Reflections (Ellie Spectre)Word Count: 1,075 It was New Year's Day. First day of the new year, and as tradition in the Spectre household, it meant time to work on New Year's Resolutions. Every year, Ellie's dad insisted on the whole family getting together and discussing what they felt they needed to do in this upcoming year to make it better than the year before. No parties, no celebrating, just this yearly chore on the first of January.
When the appropriate time had come, Ellie was laying on her bed, staring upside-down at her closet while holding her list of Resolutions in front of her. There wasn't a lot on her list, but that rarely mattered with her Dad. She could hear her mother calling from down the stairs calling her nickname. Not her birth name. This was a good sign. Rolling herself right-side up, the blonde began her journey to the dining room table. She had an idea that her mom would probably make a resolution about cleaning up house (which lasted maybe a week at best), and maybe something about learning to cook better, and her dad was probably going to say he wanted to make more money this year. Perhaps not in those exact words, but usually his resolutions were petty like that.
Planting her own list face down so nobody could peek, she sat herself lazily in her chair, legs boyishly spread out and asked "Sup?"
Her mother shot her a disapproving look, but her father responded with "You all know the drill!"
Everyone nodded, then the eyes of the adults fixated themselves on the tomboy. She was the youngest, so it was always expected that she'd go first. Ellie picked up her piece of paper, cleared her throat in a nearly humorous fashion, then began to read.
"My New Year's Resolutions. First and foremost, I plan to try harder in everything I do. I know you are all going to give me a hard time, saying that it had never been an issue before, since I almost always try my hardest with everything I do. Yet, almost isn't good enough for me anymore. Things change. Secondly, I plan to let both of you in my lives a bit more. If I let you know more about me, then we won't be arguing all the time. This will take time, but I promise you will know more about your daughter by the end of next year. Last, I plan to get my license. I know it's not much of a resolution, but it will give you one less thing to worry about with me. If I'm in a vehicle, maybe there will be less of a chance that I'll be getting into trouble."
She read the whole thing without a hint of slang or lazy speech. It was rather impressive, and it left her parents a bit speechless. The girl didn't quite mention the fact that the first two resolutions had to do with her being a Sailor Scout. They didn't need to know she had come to terms with needing to do something more than be a regular jackass. They didn't need to know she was slowly be placing hints towards them about her hidden life. All of it would come in due time.
Eventually, her mother broke the silence with a "Well, I guess that means it is my turn." She laughed one of those "nervous, but I am trying to lighten the mood" laughs before she put on her glasses, which had been resting on the table. The redhead picked up her paper and read it.
"New Year's Resolutions. Number one. Clean up the house."
Ellie had been right.
"Number two. Spend time learning to cook."
Ellie had been right again.
"Number three. Attempt to consider Ellie's needs rather than just decide what is best for her."
Well, that came out of nowhere! Ellie's jaw went a bit slack as she heard that one.
"Number four. Diet. Number five. Spend less time at work. Number six. Let Ellie know she is no longer 'grounded' since we are starting a New Year." Her mother looked to her daughter specifically after item 6, nodding her head slightly in her direction. "You got that. Right, Ellie?"
The girl's expression still seemed a bit blank and shocked, but she somehow managed to force a nod.
Mr. Spectre casually pointed out "Ellie, you should thank your mother for being so considerate."
Somewhat snapping back into reality, the girl offered a weak "Um... right... Thank ya!"
"And now, it is my turn." For a moment, he fiddled slightly with his scant amount of a beard with his fingers before looking down to his paper to read. "I resolve to become the top salesman at the lot."
Translation: Dad wants more money.
"I resolve to spend less time at work."
Very contradictory with his first resolution, and very unlikely.
"I resolve to use vacation days so we can take a family trip this summer. I resolve to help out more around the house. I resolve to take Ellie to get her license as soon as possible."
Oh, apparently her dad had been thinking about getting her more independent as well. With that last bit, he folded up his paper in front of him. "And that is that! I thank you all for your time." He beamed a smile before standing up, signaling that all were excused. The redhead of the group immediately began doing her usual, which was to start cleaning up the living room. It was almost like a secondary tradition for New Year's day to be a cleaning day.
Mom started to move stacks of magazines from a coffee table, and Dad followed after her, looking as if he wanted to help, but didn't quite know where to begin. Ellie grabbed her piece of paper and swung her arms behind her head. She was immune this year, and began to head back to the stairs.
"Elenore, where do you think you are going?" her mom chimed in as the girl set foot upon the first step.
"I never said anythin' 'bout cleanin' up. I said I'd try harder at th'things I do, not try harder with th'things you do." With a grin, she dashed up the stairs, narrowly dodging the New Year's work. From up the stairs, she could even hear the faint murmur of her dad's voice reassuring mother that "It's New Year's day, just let it go!"

The Quest for the Holy DMV Pamphlet (Ellie Spectre)Word Count: 772 Everyone had a first time visiting the DMV. Today was Ellie's special day to investigate the place. She had heard enough complaints from various adults in her life about the lines, about all the stupid rules, and about the horrible staffing. She never really believed them. I mean, how bad could the Department of Motor Vehicles really be?!
Having no license and no parent to drive her to the building meant that the energetic blonde had to walk there by herself. This was never an issue. When you walked to school every morning, and practically walked every place you wanted to go, an extra five or ten minutes of walking really didn't bother you. The building itself seemed fine, being one of those older buildings that had been recently touched up to look newer than it really was. The parking lot should have been the first clue that maybe all the rumors were true. It was packed with cars. It didn't even look like there was an empty parking space to be had, and a few stray cars were sweeping through the lot, trying to locate a spot for their car.
Ellie thought nothing of such a momentary observation as she pushed open the door to the DMV. And for a moment, she just stood at the entrance, jaw completely slack as she took in the whole interior of the building. "Well... Mom and Dad didn't exaggerate," she offered in a dull tone. It almost looked like a lineup for an amusement park ride, with the main attraction being a conversation with some old grumpy man or woman. If she had known more about the DMV, she might have known which line to get into, but she didn't. Eventually, her legs decided to start working again, and she moved off to the side before pointing a finger at the ends of the various lines and doing a quick round of "Eenie Meenie Minie Moe!" A line towards the east end of the building had been selected, and quickly the girl went to the end of the line and waited.
And waited.
And waited.
After the first ten minutes, she was already bouncing in place, lifting herself up by the balls of her feet and quickly allowing herself to sink back down to her usual height. After twenty minutes, she had started to count the amount of people in the building. First starting with the people in the lines (which had 93 people, damn!), then with the employees (there were maybe 10 that she could see). She couldn't help but wonder if it was a fire hazard to have so many people in the building at once. At thirty minutes, she was still pondering the safety of the building in the case of an emergency. At forty minutes, she had decided to start digging through her backpack for something to keep her entertained. At fifty minutes, she had located a pencil and was drawing on the denim of her backpack.
It was an hour after she had initially gotten in line that she made it to the front. With a giant smile on her lips, she approached the old woman whose face looked like it was made of leather and had hair that looked like a cotton ball.
"Oh, good, finally!" she chuckled before leaning against the counter. "I was wonderin' if I could get one of those booklets fer studyin' fer th' motorcycle license test. Y'think ya can help me out with that... eh..." She paused and narrowed her eyes as she looked at the woman's name badge. "Eh, Gladys?"
Gladys looked at Ellie as if she was the stupidest kid on the planet right now. In a tone that only matched, she pointed over to a counter towards the front of the building. "All the informational pamphlets are at the front of the building." Her tone almost seemed to hiss out "You did not have to stand in this line and waste my time, stupid kid!"
"God damn it!" The blonde smacked herself against the forehead good and hard before getting out of the line and making her way towards the pamphlets. In an extremely sarcastic tone, she shouted out "THANKS A LOT, GLADYS!" She waved the back of her hand in the old woman's direction and made her way to the counter. After a few minutes of looking, she found exactly what she was looking for and made a quick exit.
That was the biggest waste of time, and the best part was, she'd have to do this all over again when she needed to take her actual motorcycle test.
