Ellie Spectre was your average student. She got average grades, did average work in academic classes, and had average attendance at school. She was guilty of skipping school on a whim so she could work on more important things, such as her project in the garage. And just like your average student, there was one thing she did not like very much.

Tests.

Unfortunately, she had come across a hitch recently with one of her New Year's Resolutions. You needed to take a test to get your license. If it was a Driver's License, then it would be two tests (one to get your permit, and one to actually get the license). She lucked out slightly, since the license she was trying to get was for her motorcycle. It was one written test. One single written test.

Oh god, this was going to be the most important test of her life!

Somewhere in her backpack, she had stuffed the DMV booklet providing the laws for motorcycles when on the road. She had tried to read over it, but some of the things listed were so meaningless to riding safely on her bike she had simply skipped over it. It was after her first glancing over the pamphlet that she came up with a splendid idea.

Harass Barnaby Price.

Surely, he had to take the test, because he had his motorcycle license. Surely, he knew what sorts of questions were on the test. Obviously, it wouldn't be the exact same test, but any little bit would help. With such a goal in mind, the girl set forth the moment the lunch bell initially rang, beginning the incredible search to find the redhead. There were so many places on campus that people ate, that the girl literally had to run to ensure she'd be able to find him. At least she had the breakfast of champions today, a microwaveable burrito!

Barnaby would like to politely disagree on her notion of the breakfast of champions. Pop-tarts were clearly better than microwavable burritos. It was just a fact of nature.

Fortunately for Ellie, the redhead in question did not have a three-lunch spare today, else her search would have been in vain. The thought of sitting through three lunch periods to wait for one class at the end of the day made Barnaby itch, and he frequently ditched school to go hang with Jude. One lunch, however, was tolerable, even if he didn't have it with Dani or Grayson. It was a pity, really, since he had crunchy peanut butter again. Dani would have to mourn her loss later.

He was seated at the end of one of the tables, math books spread out around him as he worked on some of the homework questions. Math was one of the few subjects he didn't mind, mainly because the answers were either right or wrong. It was a bonus that he got marks for effort, even if his final answer was wrong. Barnaby could respect a teacher who gave marks for trying; it was why he actually showed up for math class.

Muttering something under his breath, he checked an answer with his pencil and turned the page of his textbook. Four down, two more to go!

Rather early on in her search, she managed to find the redhead. It was difficult to believe that he'd be eating lunch in one of the normal lunch areas, but she wasn't about to make an issue of it. It had just ensured that she would have enough time to ask him all the questions she had wanted to ask.

Not wanting to be seen initially, she rounded the area in a brisk jog, and began to approach him from behind. If this was one of her bros, she would have been able to scare them and not feel remotely guilty about it. Or if this was a nerd she wanted to pick on, which also, she felt little to no guilt over frightening the timid. So as she casually stepped up behind him, she just looked over the work he had been so absorbed in.

"The answer is 73."

The answer most certainly wasn't 73, but she couldn't help but offer some random number for an answer. Hoovering slightly over him, standing behind him as he sat, she offered a grin and a "Price, y'mind if I sit 'ere?"

The boy in question nearly jumped out of his skin when someone spoke so close to his head, the surprise causing him to draw a very long and very dark impromptu line down his math homework. Ellie was lucky she hadn't been leaning over him else he might have cracked her in the face when he jerked his head up to look at his "attacker."

"What? That's totally— Oh."

Gullible thy name is Barnaby Price.

Wrinkling his nose in a momentary expression of dislike, the red head set about erasing the long line his pencil had made in the paper. Honestly, what was the point of interrupting his math homework? She could have just sat down in front of him and, you know, waved casually. Barnaby was instantly reminded why he would never understand women.

He didn't bother looking up at Ellie's question, since it didn't really require anything other then a nod of his head. "Yeah, sure. What brings you to this side of the lunchroom?" Because clearly sitting on different sides of the lunchroom was a Big Deal.

Given the go ahead, the girl rounded the table and sat so she was facing the redhead. Her grin hadn't disappeared at all, especially since she was pretty amused at how much of a scare she had managed to give Price. Did she feel a bit bad? Just a smidge. It wasn't anything she was going to act on though.

"Man, yer face was priceless."

No, no apologies for making him ruin his homework. That wasn't Ellie's style. Her style was turning in messy looking homework.

When prompted as to her reason for actually being in the lunchroom, she didn't hide the truth one bit. "Yeah, so, I picked up a booklet at th'DMV the other day, so I can start studyin' fer gettin' my motorcycle license. I figgered since you've already taken the test, y'can maybe help narrow down what the heck I should be studyin'. I don't exactly want t'study th'wrong thing and f*ck up on the first try." Casually as she explained, she pulled out her lunchbag and her DMV pamphlet from her backpack, setting both on the table in front of her. She reached into her lunchbag and pulled out a microwaveable burrito (did we mention that these were also the lunch of champions too?), tearing at the plastic and taking a rather large bite out of it.

Mid chew, she asked "Y'game?"

The redhead managed to resist the urge to stick his tongue out at the blonde, but only by a very small margin. It would do him no good to be juvenile no matter how badly he wanted to be. Just because he failed a grade didn't mean he should act like he did, right? Right.

He'd just do it when she wasn't looking at him.

Barnaby's expression turned puzzled when she mentioned the DMV, not realizing what she was talking about until she starting talking about motorcycles. Ah, so she was finally getting her licence. Bonus. Deciding that his math homework was definitely not going to get done while Ellie was here, the redhead closed the book and reached for his lunch bag. Mmm lunchables! Because nothing said mature high school student like little bits of cut up salami.

"Failing it's not too bad anyways," he said, trying to sound like he definitely hadn't failed it his first time, which was kind of true. He hadn't just failed it his first time. He'd managed to fail it again two more times before he pulled off a pass. It wasn’t his fault he wasn't good at studying. "But I can do my best. It's kind of like the driver's test, the first bit anyways. Did you pass that okay?"

It was possible that Price had just sprouted another head upon his shoulders, or at least based upon the look which Ellie was giving him right now. Since she had more than just a few words to say, she waited until she finished chewing, which only extended that strange look she was giving him at the moment. She swallowed her food down hard, then asked "Y'mean I gotta take th'driver's test first before I can try fer the motorcycle?"

At least if she took a second trip to the DMV, she wouldn't exactly have to wait in line like she stupidly had done the first time. That was a positive at least.

Ooookay. Chock one up for "never taken any kind of vehicle test ever." He could work with that.

"Naw, that's not what I meant." He made a face as he neatly stacked up one of his Lunchables sandwiches. "It's not like it's mandatory or anything, but it would have been good practice, that's all. Same kind of question types, same room you write in, that sort of thing." Should he be encouraging a teenage girl to forgo her car licence for a motorcycle one? Probably not. But, on the other hand, would she listen to him even if he told her to stick to cars where it's safe? That was more of a definitely not.

Thusly defeated, the redhead continues, "Anyways, let's see the book. You studied anything at all yet?"

That girl could heave out a sigh of relief like it was no one's business. She lifted a hand to the back of her head and ruffled her blonde hair slightly, as if she needed to get that nervous energy out of her. "Oh good! I figgered it wouldn't make sense fer me t'take the care license test until I had my car ready. And I imagine that won't be for at least a year or so. It'd be kinda impractical t'take th'car test if I ain't got a car t'use an' all!" She let out a hearty laugh before resuming her lunchtime chow-down. She tore another large chunk out of the burrito with her teeth and wolfed it down. Lady-like grace, Ellie had not.

"Yeah, 'ere's the book, Price." Casually, she pushed the paper booklet forward. She had to wait to swallow before really being able to answer his question completely. The tomboy had manners, on occasion. Really.

"Yeah, I took a look over all the information, but some of it seems a bit... stupid. I just wanna figger out what the meat of the test is like so I can skip some of those pointless bits o'info in there."
PostPosted: Tue Jan 26, 2010 2:28 pm

Admittedly, there was some truth – okay, lots of truth – to what Ellie was saying but that didn't mean that Barnaby had to like it. She might as well do the written part of the driving test, take the lessons, and then by the time she was ready for the driving exam she'd have a car of her own. It made perfect sense. But no, she insisted on driving around on a yellow motorcycle simply because she didn't have a car yet. And people wondered why he didn't even try to understand women.

The redhead began flipping through the book as she spoke, pausing to flag the corners of a few pages down as he went. "Some of it's stupid, yeah, some of it's pretty straightforward too like 'red means stop', but as long as you know the common sense stuff you've got at least most of the test. The rest… the rest is kind of the nitpicky details that nobody will remember after the test."

He paused to turn the book around a point to a page. "Like this, for one. What you have to do on a bike to get what specific number of points taken off your licence. Little nitty gritty details like that. But the stuff later on about bike types and stuff isn't really that important. Most of it's the same as the driver's test. Road signs, lights, limitations on your licence, that sort of thing. You might as well study the whole thing and just quiz yourself on it."

The girl continued to eat her burrito until the whole thing was gone. However, that was not the end of her meal. Oh, not by a long shot. As she continued to listen, keeping her eyes attentively at Price and nodding her head on occasion, she once again reached in her lunch bag and pulled out another microwavable burrito. Her eyes only momentarily fell upon the packaging just so she could tear open the plastic, but quickly returned to Price's face. She was asking for a favor, so she might as well take everything he was saying to heart, right?

Upon his last bit of advice, Ellie's mouth curled into a grin. "So overall, yer jus' sayin' I should memorize everythin' in the booklet?" That sort of defeated the purpose of asking him what to study, but he was the one who had the license, not her. She took a bite of her burrito, then commented (with the food still in her mouth) "I guess I won'be spendin' as much time in th'garage or auto shop after school." The Vortex would have to wait, and both Hank and Phil wouldn't see her for a while. Oh how cruel life is she sarcastically thought to herself, knowing that the sacrifice would be necessary so she could ride her baby around town without a hitch.

Casually as he continued flipping through the pages, she had to ask "So, does the DMV pull any douche moves and put trick questions on their tests?" In school, some teachers were infamous for such a tactic. If she went in knowing, then she could at least mentally prepare for any possible mindf*ck.

The redhead only paused long enough to stuff another few Lunchables 'sandwiches' into his mouth before he nodded. He had to swallow awkwardly around the remainder of his lunch but he did it before he opened his mouth. Ellie definitely didn't need to see bits of semi-munched cheese and salami. "Pretty much, yeah. All you have to do is memorize the stuff for a day, and then once you're finished you can forget it. Er most of it anyways."

You did kind of have to remember the bit about stopping for red lights. That was kind of crucial to your survival.

Barnaby offered Ellie an apologetic half shrug when she mentioned the Vortex. As they said, that was the way the cookie crumbled. If she wanted the bike licence then she'd have to put the work into it. Besides, it would only be for a little while. Then she could ride freely with the wind blowing in her—

God he hoped she knew to wear a helmet.

"Naw, they're not allowed to do it. People'd sue them for making some questions harder than others. They're just strict multiple choice, all from the book, you either know it or you don't. Or you make a good guess. How good are you at guessing?"

She always wondered how people could eat such a small lunch as she watched Price consume his Lunchables. It was such a kid-sized meal, it was just completely foreign to her how he could eat so little.

"That makes sense" she mused aloud about the trick questions. "Sometimes wish that worked in the schools as well then." She grinned at the thought of possibly suing the school's teachers for making unfair tests, but it was just a passing thought. Nothing too serious. Her dad might have been willing to sue someone to earn a quick buck or two, but that wasn't the blonde girl's style.

Her grin remained on her lips as she rather easily confessed "If I flat out don't know the answer, then I'm boned! I can't guess worth the life of me." Without any hesitation, she crammed another chunk of burrito in her mouth and tore a section off to chew on. It was an especially large bite this time, so it took her a moment to chew it and swallow, but when she did, she had more to add to her statement. "I've tried all the 'patterns' that people told me work. Never passed a test that way." She shrugged and looked away for a moment, though what she was looking at, not even she knew. It just felt like an appropriate moment to look away.

The blonde turned back with a laugh and managed to point out the optimistic side of it "At least I know that I earn whatever grades I got instead a'bein' lucky, y'know?"

Urg, school work. Barnaby couldn't have stopped himself from making a face even if he wanted to. He just wished schoolwork would go away, period. The majority of his loathing was, naturally, directed at English (his one true enemy), but as far as he was concerned any homework was bad homework.

His face fell when she said her guessing skills were pretty close to nothing, but he tried to mask it by peeling off the sticker on his apple and taking a bite. No guessing skills eh? So much for going down that road. It looked like they were either going to have to hardcore study or hope that Ellie could magically acquire some kind of guessing skills before exam time rolled around. (How had he managed to get roped in as her study buddy? Didn't everyone know he was the worst study buddy ever?)

"Well that's one way to look at it, I guess." No pun intended. "Guess that means you gotta study harder then." The redhead grinned as he took another bite of his apple. "I can quiz you if you want. Like, you read a couple of chapters or whatever and I'll text your knowledge." Study schedules 101. Clearly attending some of those extra help sessions was about to pay off.

"My philosophy is study yer hardest, or don't bother at all!" She laughed out for a moment before stuffing the remaining chunk of burrito in her mouth. Her cheeks bulged in a humorous fashion as she slowly ground the food up in her mouth. It was almost tempting to ask her to say "pudgy bunnies" for the pure novelty sake.

After about a minute, whether or not the food was sufficiently chewed up, she swallowed down hard before digging into her bag once more. One almost wondered if there was a third burrito waiting in the depths of the lunch bag, but for now it did not seem like that was the case. Instead, a bottle of water was tugged out. Forget energy drinks or juices. Water was the best thing for hydrating! She spun the topper off and practically guzzled half of the liquid in one go. The plastic bottle crinkled and complained at how fast she was drinking, but she didn't ease up until her parched throat was satisfied.

"Ahhhh!!!" she sighed out contently before returning to the land of the conversation with Price. "Gimme a chance to start studyin' first, and y'got yerself a deal, Price! Where'd ya wanna meet?" There was a vague pause before the obvious answer seemed to hit her.

"You could always come over t'my place, since y'already know where it is. Unless ya'd rather keep it t'lunch times at school?" The first suggestion seemed pretty practical to her, and in all honesty, she never even stopped to think how such a proposition could easily be misconstrued into something more than simply "just hanging out."
