[▼ Q ▼] What Is Home, Anyway? [▼ Q ▼] [- 1,139 words -] [- Oba -]
[ Itotia, having finally raised enough coin to make the trip back to Yael and purchase her own home, finds herself hesitating. It's time for her to make a decision: Will she stay in Oba which has become a new sort of home, or will she return to her friends and family back in Yael? ] Her hands were shaking as she looked down at the table before her. Could this be true? Could her count be correct? After multiple attempts, her numbers were hardly off until this final one, which matched what she hoped. She had enough for her trip, and to find lodging and eventually a home. She had enough to go home.
Aseara, the leader of the Red, knew of her intentions. She knew that Itotia wanted to eventually go home, to see her family and make due with her gods. For all the woman had on her plate, she still tried to help Itotia get what she needed, even if the Yaeli would leave a major hole in the Management. It was strange, now that Itotia thought about it, that Aseara let her have such power when eventually she would be gone.
It must have been the trust Aseara seemed to have in Itotia after everything they went through.
Aseara understood that Itotia wanted to leave, but was willing to give her a better opportunity to get the coin she needed. Itotia knew Aseara also was a bit selfish, and hoped the freedom and power might entice Itotia to stay instead of leave. And it did, sort of.
Here she was, looking down at the stack of coins that were tucked away in her room, and she was at a loss. These savings represented so much to the Yaeli who was away from home: they represented peace, security, faith, hardship, strength, and a future. They represented the peace of mind that she finally had a way to escape, and the security that came with that escape. They represented her faith in the gods for helping her get this far, to obtain such a goal, and to work through the hardship of the past few years. They represented her strength and determination to never give up and to fight for her future.
But...they also represented a choice.
She had a choice. She could leave, take the money and never look back. Or...she could stay. Aseara seemed confident in her abilities, and enjoyed providing her with a voice to speak up and dictate the happenings of the Red. The girls and boys who worked at the Red respected her, and seemed to welcome her. This place was filled with outcasts, hybrids of unique heritage, and they didn't look down at her for her (now dull) eyes or ears. They enjoyed them, teased her about them, and even complemented her for such features. They welcomed her to their little rag-tag family of outcasts with open arms, and created a new sense of security.
Was this a sign from Lurin, a sign that maybe the mainlands were something of an opportunity and not a punishment? Dafiel made her presence known with the punishment of being taken, but maybe the two were working together to provide a message. Since the mainlanders had arrived, the bug ladies making their home on Yael, all the Yaeli could talk about was punishment for their transgressions. The gods were angry, and thus sent the monsters to their land. But maybe it was something else.
Itotia took a deep breath as her thoughts wandered toward this direction. Was this a sign from the gods that maybe they were wrong? Maybe they needed to meet these mainlanders, to join forces and fight? Sure, some mainlanders like Afsana were a mess, but others like the hybrids seemed to share similar strife that they did. They were outcasts, mixed blood, and only looking for a place called home in a world of monsters.
Itotia could tell that even her brother and sister Yaeli were curious of these lands, as some began to travel across the sea and through the mainland.
Now, don't get her wrong, Itotia isn't some bleeding heart. She knew inside that she'd never feel fully safe among these mainlanders, at least not with strangers. But...
...there was Kresimir, the dedicated shifter who constantly pushed to for conversation and companionship. He never let her really pull away, but also was considerate of her space. He seemed to be the first genuine, non-threatening mainlander she interacted with, and always when thinking of her support he was one of the first to come to mind. She wondered now what he was up to, and if she would see him again.
And she wanted to see him again.
Aseara was the next one on her list, the enemy turned ally turned friend. Aseara was harsh, cold and just as closed off as Itotia was, and they often clashed during the beginning of her stay. It took a long interaction to fall into clarity, for Aseara to finally see what her leader was doing, and to realize what needed to be done. After that moment, they fought for a common goal, and came out as something more than co-workers. Now, with the woman's children taking up her time, Aseara seemed to put her faith into Itotia to help run the Red, giving her roles that went beyond a simple assistant job set.
Others also crossed her mind, like the dancers, musicians, and Aseara's family. The list was longer than she remembered, now that she went through it mentally, and was much longer than the Yaeli she knew back home. Back on the island, she wandered, always dancing away from any companions (male or otherwise). Back then, she saw it as freedom, but now she saw it as lonely. Returning now, after so long and with faded eyes, she had a feeling no one would greet her warmly like they did when she entered the red.
Most would see her as cursed, and force her to live as an outcast.
Swallowing, Itotia brushed her coin back into the bag, and then set the bag into a small chest. Sealing it with a little key, she pushed back from her chair and moved to stand.
It wasn't time to leave, not yet.
The gods, they blessed her still, and seemed to have taught her a valuable lesson of right and wrong.
No, for now she would stay on this mainland, and start finding a better purpose to serve her gods. Already, options were spinning through her head as a weight was lifted off of her shoulders. She felt care free, for she knew she could go home, but had the choice to stay. For now, she'd stay and see what good would come from being free on the mainland, and aware of the people. She was dangerous, because she knew the mainlanders were not monsters. They were weak, mortal, like the Yaeli, which meant she could face them head on and without fear.
Some day, she'd return home. But for now, she had a job to do, and a future to plan. And her options were endless.

[▼ S ▼] Here to Stay [▼ S ▼] [- 617 words -] [- Oba -] "Itotia, is it true?"
The shrill voice of a young girl from down the hall made the Yaeli pause in step. Turning slowly on her heel, she looked with narrowed eyes at the girl. It was a new dancer, one she helped a bit out when she first arrived. The girl was like a puppy, following her around with doe-like eyes in wonder. Maybe it was because of her race, or maybe it was because she was the first nice thing the girl had, but she looked up to Itotia and the introverted dancer put up with it...to a point.
"Is what true?" She echoed back, eyes lidded as she looked down her eyelashes at the newbie.
"...That' you're leaving?!"
Suddenly Itotia noticed the way the girl's eyes were glossy, her lip quivering slightly as if she were to cry. It was a strange sight, to see a girl crying over her, and Itotia felt her brows crease and her lips pull down. She let out a sigh and lifted her hand to brush against the wrinkle to loosen it up.
"Where did you hear such a rumor?" She asked instead of an answer, glancing about to see who else might be watching. A few eyes darted away from the scene, but most seemed to be ignoring them. That being said, they all had ears, and Itotia wasn't keen to have listening birds on her business.
"Come on, sweetie, let's take a walk before you get yourself in a right fit." She said soothingly before the girl could respond, nodding toward the door to the courtyard. Most started to avoid the space due to the triplets being old enough to cause problems, which meant it would be a great place to sit, soak up the Oban sunlight, and have a right talking to.
As they walked, the young dancer wrung her hands, lip quivering as if she was trying hard to not cry out. Itotia really hoped the girl wouldn't start a scene, even if they were alone anyone could overhear sobbing if it were loud enough. As they approached a bench, Itotia gestured for the girl to sit down before settling herself in as well.
"Who told you I was leaving?" She echoed to the young girl, who let out a hiccup.
"Ranthe, he said he heard you planning with Aseara. It's really true? You're leaving the Red?" Itotia sighed as the girl got herself quickly into a state, before holding up a hand as if holding up the world.
"Rumors are just that, rumors. I am leaving the Red-" She ignored the gasp, "But I'm coming back when I'm done."
It took a few moments for the girl to get around the words, before she let out a loud sniffle, "You're coming back?"
"Yes, I'm coming back. I'm just taking a trip to visit my home, try to find some family and finish some business. But I'll be back. Aseara wont be able to manage you lot without me."
It was a joke, but it feel a bit flat as the girl let out another sob and wrapped her arms around Itotia like an octopus. It took nearly an hour for her to calm down enough to leave the Yaeli alone, an hour's loss of planning for the trip and getting her things in order. As she walked the girl back to get her makeup done for the night, Itotia shook her head. Why she wanted to come back here she was beginning to question, but plans were made and she had a schedule to keep, so she just hoped she wouldn't run into the delicate girl before her trip was set to take off.

[▼ Q ▼] The World I Live In [▼ Q ▼] [- 580 words -] [- Matori -]
[ It has been a long journey since Itotia arrived in Oba, one filled with challenges and love. Finally, Itotia has a moment to look back and realize just how far she has come. ] Silence. It was silence that filled the space around Itotia as she sat outside of her home, looking up at the stars. The comet that danced across the sky stood out like a flame, bringing in the new year with a positive omen. Itotia hadn't been home to Yael in what felt like a lifetime, but she knew the power of such a sight. It was a blessing of good fortune on the year ahead, and many of her dancers had snuck outside to make a wish between their patrons.
Itotia waited until the night was late, the last drunks stumbling home and the doors locked secure, before she took her own moment under the stars. It was a personal reflection that filled the silence, one long overdue. Her life had come so far and filled with so much noise that she rarely had time to think for herself.
The Violet was a roaring success, both as a dancer's den and as a place for stray Yaeli to rest and acclimate to the lands. Lately, less and less needed her help, and she began to consider repurposing the space for some of her dancers who wanted to have their own family. Maybe she wasn't as needed anymore as she once thought. Maybe the peace of the lands meant the Yaeli were welcomed back into the warm embrace of the mainland.
Then there was her daughters, strong independent beautiful girls who were growing up to branch out on their own. Aria wanted to travel, and who was Itotia to stop her? She begged Kres to ensure that her daughter knew how to protect herself, but she was independent enough that Itotia had faith she'd make her own story. Tali on the other hand was a distracted flower, content to find herself at home and secretly Itotia was glad.
She couldn't imagine losing both of her daughters.
The thought struck her as odd, considering how independent she once was. Her independence was taught from years of toil, and maybe it was the peace that opened Itotia up to what she could have have been had it all not happened.
But she didn't want to think of that, because she found Aseara and Kres through this journey, found a home and had two beautiful daughters. She had a home, had a safe place where she wasn't looking over her shoulder. She had a husband who was so kind, so tender that often it made her heart ache. His love was so powerful, she never could imagine a life without it.
Itotia was content to settle, content to live out her days in this land with her family. She had come such a long way, toiled for so long, that she knew she deserved it. She was happy, the kind of happy that only existed in fairytales, and she was never going to lose that.
Looking up at the star that danced across the sky, she closed her eyes and made a soft wish deep with her heart. She wished for peace, for happiness, and for this joy to never end.
As she let the wish fade away into the silence, Itotia stood up and brushed off her skirt. She had work to do, and work waited for no one. Eyes up at the sky one last time, the Yaeli turned back to her home with a soft smile on her face, ready to get back to the world she built with her family.
