[❖ S ❖] Scouting The West [❖ S ❖] [- Solo -] [- 1006 words -] It had been a few weeks since the Alkidikes were banished from the mainland. The sisters were working day and night to establish a safe camp for them to thrive in the unknown land. Between the matron calling them together constantly to preach about her 'solution' to their problems, and the sisters working to use the land to their advantage, Lumikani was seemingly always on her feet and on the move. Yet, she still felt so flustered and trapped in their new prison.
Eventually, she realized she needed to get out of the confines of their camp and into the wilderness around them.
Back in Jauhar, Lumikani was free to roam the trees and the land. She was constantly on her feet and moving, abandoning responsibility so she could see the world around her. Now, in the new camp on Yael, she was forced to take on responsibilities that left her tied to the camp. It was way too much, and the girl had quite the case of cabin fever.
So, when the first call for long-term scouts raised through the camp, Lumikani darted to the front and made sure she was picked to be part of that group. Her bones ached for an adventure, and she was not going to pass the opportunity up to get out of the camp and explore their new home.
The group was advised to keep to the west and to avoid all Earthling camps. Preliminary reports confirmed that there were little to no settlement activity of the Yaeli on this side of the island, as most seemed keen to keep near the volcano and close to their own religious center. Instead, they needed to scout their side of the island and determine the best locations to hunt, establish borders, and possibly create additional settlements as needed.
It was a blind trip, and Lumikani was thrilled.
The group of sisters set to go explore was small, and they agreed they would split up and take specific directions. They would mark the trees and would use Nondwa to communicate between scouts. They would take a few days to travel as far as they could, and then turn around and report back. It was simple, to the point, but everyone was warned on the identified risks of the lands.
The land was full of caves that could pose as a risk, and it was unacceptable for any to not return. The numbers were low enough, and all were expected to be safe and careful on their trip. At the end of the day, each sister was expected to be swift, safe, and detailed with whatever findings they had.
Lumikani decided not to bring her familiar along, certain she could focus more on the land and less on her Radaku. It was swift, but she didn't want to be concerned with it potentially falling or getting hurt, losing both a companion and a valuable ally. So, packed with a few days worth of supplies and a bit of excitement, Lumikani took off to travel south and away from her new home.
The first day was uneventful. Lumikani explored the area closest to the settlement and identified key locations that could be used as markers for the scouts, and potential places for actual boundaries to their land. It was all very serious and focused, so she was excited to rest the night and finally explore the unknown in the south. Waking before dawn, Lumikani quickly made her way past the marks and toward the damp, wetlands that seemed to fill the area around them.
Immediately, the Alkidike blade was able to identify the rocks among the foliage. It was a bit disarming, if she was honest, considering she was on the ground and stuck looking around instead of up in the trees. Unfortunately, the lands around them didn't quite provide the same trees as Chibale and Jauhar, so she needed to adapt. From being so used to tree travel, Lumikani felt she was traversing slow throughout the day, and constantly had to adjust her movements with her legs.
Oh how she wished she could just climb above the damp heat and mist of the landscape. Instead, she was stuck on the ground, with her eyes lowered and focused on the caves. Well, even if it was a bit inconvenient, Lumikani wouldn't pass up the first bit of adventure since her banishment.
After another day of traveling through the moist heat, Lumikani seemed to make it to the last point she could reach. Finally, she had the chance to rest and focus on the world around her, not just the path she needed to follow.
Her feet took her to a great cliff overlooking a large pool. Her eyes widened at the sight of the water that filled the cave, and she rested down on the ground near the lip of the stone. She was quite a ways above still, and if she looked down it looked like the water was deep. It must have been from years of rain or maybe the surf originally being this high, but it was beautiful. It was like a little treasure, and suddenly Lumikani thought of her sister, Anya.
Anya would have loved it. The trek itself was long and tedious, but the final result was a beautiful adventure with an area to call her own. The bout of homesickness lasted but a second before Lumikani pushed it back and stood. She would remember this location, and come back with tools to add a rope to go down. The coming months would be difficult, so a little retreat would be helpful for her to keep her mind focused and clear.
Hopefully, no one would come to her little location or follow her, for she would keep this secret for as long as she survived.
With that promise in mind, Lumikani stood, brushed off her legs, and began the long trek back to the settlement. Her mind lingered on the pool, her past, and the unknown future before her.

[❖ E ❖] The First Blooms [❖ E ❖] [- Event Located Here -] [- 792 words -] Lumikani could not believe what she was seeing. All around her, the sisters' voices rose up to a monstrous roar. It nearly felt physical, the sound of their voices as they cried out for their new mother and the future of their tribe. Lumikani kept silent, although it was hard to resist raising her own voice and joining in with the bloodlust. Instead, she moved her smaller form around her sisters and to the front, where she could get a clear view of the small child held in their matron's hands.
It was a bloomed child, but it was no Alkidike. The girl and grey skin with pink extremities, and hair the color of rubies. Her eyes, which cracked open to curiously look around, were bright green. Although physically she appeared of their race, her coloring and the extra antennae were a clear sign of difference.
Just as Elzira was different from Aisha, so were these girls. Although they held the roots of the Alkidike, they could not be considered so.
Their future as a cause would live on, but their bodies would change to this new race. The thought sent a jolt of stark reality to the smaller Alkidike.
Lumikani, who had always followed Aisha blindly, was at a loss. Aisha had sent them away, and although her seed provided life, it was in the form of this new being. Elzira, a cousin tree to their own, blessed them with a chance for change. Lumikani was uncertain when the tree bloomed, but now she felt even more detached.
Walking away from the cheering crowd, and the face of their future, Lumikani went to her hut deep in their village. She settled down and tried to wrap her head around things, and realized she was in a bit of a shock. Aisha was gone, and they were left with this new tree. Grown from the root of her past, her future was a new direction. She could only follow Elzira now, only follow the pace of this split. Maybe, before, she could see a chance to join her sisters across the sea.
But now, there was no more option.
This day marked the official severing of the extremists and the Alkidikes. And in a generation, their group would be no more. They would become the nameless grey figures, born in the soil of a foreign land and raised on a cause that broke apart mothers, daughters, and sisters. Never before had Lumikani felt so torn.
If she thought about it long enough, she could easily place her confusion to her undying love for Aisha. That, and the fact she knew that Elzira was one in the same. The same power, the same figure, she was a cousin. And the fact that their Matron heard the voice and knew when the blooms would occur...well...who could deny such a miracle? Lumikani would be foolish to turn away from her sisters now.
Yet, Aisha was her mother. She was the reason Lumikani grew strong and moved out to this land. She was the reason Lumikani had bloomed and she was the reason Lumikani fought. Her past was all Aisha. How could she turn away from her mother and fight for a cousin instead.
"Elzira, bloomed from the mother. Maybe Elzira was given to us by Aisha to guide us. A reward to those who showed true faith and power. Aisha cannot reach across the sea...so maybe she blessed us with a seed to start anew. Maybe Aisha knew...that her race was dying from the rot of their ways...and Aisha wanted to give life to a new cause."
Could this be...her sacrifice? Lumikani was surprised to find tears falling from her eyes. Never had she cried, not since she realized she was to march to war. She never cried for her lost sisters, mothers, or tree. She never cried for her fate. Yet, here she cried as she realized this was Aisha's ultimate gift and sacrifice.
Aisha was giving them life as a reward for all of their actions, and now it was time to have faith in her mother's choice. Elzira may not be her true mother, but maybe she would help guide the young blooms from her roots. It was up to Lumikani to provide for their future, a future she may not understand. Stuck between her past, and the future of the race, she was merely a guide. To continue to educate the young ones on Aisha's ways, but to also cultivate them so they might embrace Elzira.
Elzira, their future.
Oh what a bittersweet realization she had. Lumikani cried for the pains of her past, but opened her heart up for the potential of her future.

[❖ BB ❖] Deadly Crystals [❖ BB ❖] [- Battle Located Here -] [- 715 words -] [- 39 experience -] Lumikani was on another scouting trip. It seemed that this was a daily event for her; but she wasn't one to complain. More often than not, she took the time to explore the area, get used to the land, and even check out the random caves near the end of her cycle. Today was another one of those days where she completed her scouting without any issue, and so she carefully made way to the deep caves outside of their borders.
She had little concern that she would encounter another this far out, especially those Yaeli. The Earthlings on this island seemed to have gotten the point that this half was their land. Actually, Lumikani was surprised that none had ventured this far out - most Yaeli settlements were close to the fire mountains of the east. There had to be a reason, as there were hardly any ruins on this side of the island to hint at life before now.
It was something the blade would need to think about at a later time, and possibly explore a bit more to get a better idea. It was high time for her to do another adventure, and find an excuse to get out of baby sitting the younglings.
As she made her way through the brush and toward the caves, Lumikani's ears twitched at the sound of rattling. Her entire body froze, well aware of the warning that filled the air. The grass was high, but it seemed she had gotten much to close to one of the inhabitants of the island. The Alkidikes had learned quickly about the threat of the Keldari, and the warning signs when one or more appeared. Skittish in nature, the snake-like animals still held quite the bite.
Lumikani wanted one of her own.
Slowly moving as to not startle them, Lumikani began to use her blade to push back the grass, her eyes and ears perked to catch any sign of movement. At first the rattling filled the air, and it was speeding up. As her blade passed by a bush, it all but stopped, and Lumikani knew she found her mark.
She had to be careful, and grab it as close to the head as possible to ensure no bites would occur. Darting out, she got one of the Keldari by the head and pulled back with a grin. However, she didn't see the second one until a few seconds later, and had to quickly dart back before the fangs sunk into her skin.
Hissing back, mostly because it felt like it needed to happen, Lumikani eyed the snake still in the bushes as rattling filled the air like thunder. The loose snake curled back, but decided to dart into the grasses instead, its gems glimmering like flashes of lighting as it darted away to safety. Smirking, Lumikani leaned back and looked down at her prize, a pretty little snake with pale skin and bright green markings. Oh, it looked like the perfect Alkidike companion indeed.
Lumikani made the decision to not go to the caves. It would be a waste of time, and she could tell the Keldari in her hand was tense and upset. This one was quite the fighter, and it's long body coiled and rattled with stress. Not ideal, but it wasn't like she had a choice when transporting the creature back to her home. She was far away, without any sort of back or satchel to store it, and there was no way she was releasing the animal or holding it by anywhere else.
Too bad the creature had other ideas.
All at once, the Keldari began to thrash about, hissing and rattling and nearly slamming its crystal tail into her body and fingers. Lumikani hissed again, but it was too late for her to try and grip the tail. It was waving around like a fly, and soon enough slammed into her fingers and then her arm.
Letting out a roar, the Alkidike released the snake into the grass below and darted back before she could be bit. The snake, pleased, rattled in the air one last time before darting into the bushes and out of sight. Lumikani cursed her luck, stomped her foot, and darted back to the path to head home.

[❖ E ❖] Remembering the Past [❖ E ❖] [- Event Located Here -] [- 786 words -] Lumikani didn't have much of a chance to think for herself these days. With two wiggling younglings who couldn't help but get into trouble, a tribe to protect and cultivate, and a new partner to work through every issue and disagreement, her mind was never given a break to just think. Even now, as she sat in the humid heat of her new homeland, Zayana curled in her lap and focused on the Limbara before them, she couldn't help but split her focus. The young girls were growing, a beautiful mixture of her silent determination and Zandala's dedication. They were beautiful, they were theirs, and they were the future.
Lumikani couldn't help but believe that her daughters were stronger than the original blooms. It was a bit selfish, but she knew that the blessing of two mothers was quite strong, even if the tree went out of her way to provide the original three. Maybe it was because the process was so similar to her own faith, to the connection she longed to have with Aisha. Even after fully embracing Elzira, she still held the old views. Elder Alkidikes were the same, often mixing the two together and seeing Elzira as a sister or daughter to their own great mother. More of the younger Alkidikes abandoned their faith for their savior Elzira, and it was often a heated topic between herself and Zandala.
She trusted Zandala, but sometimes she struggled to find the confidence to speak freely about her wants and needs of her old goddess.
The wiggling in her arms became distracting, pulling her away from her thoughts and toward Zayana. The youngling wanted up, to go toward the Limbara and to ride atop it once more. Lumikani couldn't resist providing her daughter with the opportunity, silently hopeful she could help her daughter move in the direction of becoming a guardian. Maybe, Zayana would take on the bow and become a strong warrior like her mother, leading the charge of the sisters of the new generation.
As she held her daughter atop the still-growing Limbara, Lumikani finally took a moment to think over everything before. Before she made the choice to march, before she made the decision to fight, and before she sealed her fate by traveling over the sea. It was so simple back then, standing beside her sisters and growing into a wild child. It still make her heart ache to think of them, even after so many years. Dare she admit she missed the Alkidikes on the island who she called family. The memories of her shadowing Elsheba, of arguing with Anya and of looking out for Ashani, it ll caused her chest to ache.
She didn't realize she was holding tightly onto Zayana's arms until the little devil smartly pointed it out, sending her own stubborn glare and threatening to bite her mother if she continued.
The child was wild indeed.
Lumikani smoothed her fingers over her daughter's shoulders, noting that there was hardly any sort of sign of the grip, and sent her a soft smile. Soon, she would be taking her daughters on the journey to the south, after careful scouting of course to ensure no Yaeli were in the same path. She would take them to train and to meditate, to grow and thrive beyond the borders of this camp. Freedom was one of the greatest memories of her own past, the freedom to move in the trees, and she would never neglect such a freedom for her daughters. They deserved to thrive and grow and needed it if they were to become great warriors.
The past showed her the truths of the world, of how a misunderstanding or disagreement could tear apart a tribe and a family. She missed Aisha, she was bitter about losing the great mother she followed with blood, sweat, and tears, and she questioned if she'd ever see Elzira the same way. Maybe not, but her daughters only knew Elzira, and Lumikani couldn't quite explain Aisha in the same way. They would grow, and their children, until all that was left was Elzira who believed in a new goddess. Lumikani still struggled to imagine such an offputting thought.
She knew she'd never make it back to the mainland, never walk among the roots of her Great Mother. She also knew she couldn't become jaded or bitter, as it would leave her weak and open for attack. She needed to continue to influence her family in the ways of the Alkidikes, until the day she died.
Even with all the turmoil, even with the loss of a great mother, she had a new cause to fight for. She had to fight for her family.

[❖ Q ❖] Trial of Faith [❖ Q ❖] [- 2093 words -] [- Yael -] [ Word has spread through the camp at Lumikani's unique views. With so few confidants, Lumikani is unsure about who started spreading the rumor of her less-than-extreme opinions, but that hardly matters now that the Matron has gotten wind of things. Now, with her presence requested before the Matron and the great tree, Lumikani must find a way to express her faith without losing the only thing she has left; her family. ] It was early morning, and Lumikani spent it as normal. Her two daughters, the blooms of her heart, were growing stronger and more daring. They required attention, guidance, and patience, all which she was willing to provide. Their growth and training was always a challenge, but Lumikani would never step down or turn away; she adored the needs of her Elaria and the growth they showed under her care.
Often, as the sun waned and she returned to Zandala's side, she would speak softly of their day and a warmth would fill her soul. She never really understood the loss of their exile until she found something to fill the ache. She lost her family, but made a new one. It was everything she could ever want, save for possibly a last farewell with those she never had the chance to say goodbye.
As she moved toward the pen, her familiar driven daughter by her side, she couldn't help but feel a bit of unease. Something was in the air, and it slowly made itself apparent with the shuffling and huffing of her familiars. At her side, the ever growing and ever studious Zayana shifted, glancing up toward her before moving a bit quicker to check the status of their pets. Soon, she would fully pass on the Limbara to her daughter, letting the young girl embrace the responsibilities of taking care of the large beast. Never had she imagined such a creature would grow so large, despite seeing them when she captured the beast years ago.
Zayana would make her proud if she decided to ride such a beast into battle, and Lumikani was sure the little girl would make her other mother proud if she decided to also carry a bow.
Her musing was cut short by the gasp of her daughter, right before she caught sight of one of the runners of the Matron. She recognized such a person, it was the same sister who once brought the news of the blessing of Elaria, as well as the news that the flowers were about to bloom.
This time, however, Lumikani's gut sunk and she grew weary of the girl's presence. The sister's tight lips and narrowed eyes were enough for her to quickly push Zayana along with the instruction to take care of all chores this morning. Her daughter, Aisha bless her heart, was wise enough to ask no questions and quickly move into the pen.
"Good Morning, Sister" Lumikani greeted cordially, moving away from the pen and toward the lingering Alkidike, "What brings you to my hut this early in the day? Is it already time for the Matron to check in on my daughters?"
The last line was a bit short, mostly because Lumikani disliked the check ins from the Matron. She felt the woman was simply trying to manage how she raised her daughters, all based on the fact they were Elaria. Thankfully, the Matron didn't find any issues with how they were raised, although Lumikani doubted she could do much than insist on public training.
"The Matron wishes to check on you, Sister"
Lumikani knew it, and as she traveled in silence with the runner, her mind ran over what possibly could be in store for her. A visit with the Matron, while not unheard of, was rare. Normally it was only Elaria guardians, or those who needed to go to trial, as the Matron never took herself away from Elzira. Lumikani knew that it was not time for a check-up, which meant the Matron was most likely evaluating her for some sort of action.
Could it be because of the correspondence with Kiunyki? It was hardly anything, just a note to let her know who to speak for if she ever came wandering. No, the results of that trial were anything but tense, and the Matron seemed pleased to have a warrior join their ranks.
Unfortunately, Lumikani had no time to think over what it might be, as they finally made it to the dense root structure where Elzira, and the Matron, resided. The Sister beside her gruffly told her to move along, which meant this would be a private affair.
Lumikani was uncertain if she should be reassured, or worried.
The Matron sat away from the base of the tree, naturally in a location where sisters were still permitted. Lumikani had only gone to the roots a few times, and that when she had her blooms. Now, the Matron treated her with a cool expression and made it clear she was not permitted to go any further. So, she settled in, below the leader and in a place of submission, and waited.
It didn't take long.
"Lumikani, little Sister..." The term rolled off the woman's tongue as she turned fully to face her, "...you are one of my greatest prides, you know. The Earthling-sized Alkidike, untrained and uncertain, yet skilled and dedicated to our cause. Never once have you stepped out of line, and even our Great Mother saw your dedication and felt fit enough to bless you as one of our first true mothers..."
Lumikani waited for the but, there always was one, but she didn't look away nor show any sort of apprehension despite the hammering of her heart. The Matron was calm, but her thin fingers seemed to dig into her thighs before she released them with a calm breath of air.
"At first, I just couldn't believe what I heard."
Silence.
Lumikani could not resist shifting at the weight of the silence after those words. What did the Matron mean? After a minute of silence, Lumikani knew that the Matron was waiting her out, and that she had to speak up.
"Forgive me, Matron, but I do not understand what I could have done to upset you. I've dedicated my life to this tribe, and I've raised my daughters following the ways of our sisterhood."
A gentle hum from the Matron halted any additional words, and Lumikani shifted yet again.
"You see, my dear, that is precisely the issue I face. Some Sisters have come to me expressing concern over your views on those not blessed by Elzira and Aisha..."
So it wasn't her devotion to Aisha, which she knew the Matron understood in some way. It might have helped that Lumikani still raised her daughters to revere both Great Mothers, if not Elzira more. Lumikani had long accepted, thanks to the blessing she received, that Elzira had power in her own right. Even if the tree was not Aisha, it still was of Aisha, and that was enough for Lumikani to have faith. Her daughters would be in good hands with this new Goddess.
This, however, was a different beast of a discussion.
"I am not unreasonable, Lumikani, and I do take into account all facets of a sister before passing judgement. Your dedication to our cause is enough to bring you here, not on trail, but for me to ask questions. Now, this detail of hybrids and those Crystal Heathens...."
Lumikani let the words dance across her tongue, but not out of her lips. It took a long moment for her to gather her thoughts, and the Matron let her ponder it over with surprising understanding.
"My faith has been my foundation, Matron. I grew up believing Aisha blessed this body to bloom even if it was as small as an Earthling's. I proved myself to be a strong sister, and I understood that Aisha has a will and always guides us with intent. Some Sisters, blinded by their anger, frustration, see my tolerance of hybrids as a weakness. Yet, I believe Aisha would not choose to bless us with such creatures if she didn't feel they had a part in this world."
The Matron kept a cool face as she prodded a bit, "So you feel hybrids should be permitted to walk with Sisters?"
"I feel..." Lumikani responded quickly, "That if a sister of mixed blood shows faith, dedication, and determination to follow our ways, they should be permitted acceptance. Yes, they are weak because of their blood, but they hold Aisha in their soul. As long as they follow our ways, I tolerate. However, do not misunderstand this as weakness. I will kill any who decides to turn away from our Great Mothers. Sister or not, I cannot accept such an insult and dismissal to what Aisha and Elzira have blessed us with."
The matron rose a brow, eyeing Lumikani a moment before nodding slightly, as if satisfied by the answer. The next question she asked, however, took Lumikani's breath away.
"And what if an Earthling journeyed to our soil, asked to embrace Aisha and be permitted as one of our own."
The silence between them was strained for a long minute, and Lumikani knew she needed to speak up less the Matron make her own determination. But what could she say to not sound as if she was a sympathizer. She wasn't the only one on the line here; if the Matron so felt it, she could banish or even kill Lumikani. Then, her daughters would be without a mother, and who knows what the Matron would do to 'correct' any teachings they might think she spread.
No, she needed to word this carefully, and hopefully not be removed permanently from the camp.
"Is it not our goal to take back what was once ours? Aisha and Elzira are supreme, absolute truths to the power of our gods. The Earthlings refuse because they can't see, but what once they do see? If they embrace Aisha, and understand our cause, and are complacent, must they be killed? Surely they fill better needs, and I've yet to hear Aisha or Elzira request their blood be spilled to feed their roots. I am tolerant, but not foolish. Why waste a resources if we can simply convert and use the Earthlings for ours, and our Great Mothers', needs?"
"As slaves?"
"As tools. They will never be strong, but maybe we can shepherd them like Aisha does us. Aisha and Elzira are our mothers, but why can't we guide the Earthlings like parents as well. Shape them to fit our needs and not spread ourselves thin. Control them, delegate them, and not risk a war that we do not need. I understand the bloodlust, but why must we kill valuable resources to a world run, and protected, by our Great Mothers?"
The Matron was silent, thoughtful, and Lumikani felt reassured that there were no more immediate questions. Sweat dotted her neck as she waited for a response, before a soft sigh came from the Matron.
"I do not agree with everything you say, Lumikani, but I do not see deception or threat. Being the Matron is not easy, and until we cultivate a strong tribe I must make hard decisions. Do not mistake this conversation as a dismissal of the topic, nor me accepting your views. We all must make sacrifices, so I'd recommend you drop your views about tolerance with Earthlings while you live on this soil. We have different ways here, and I would believe you came here of your own will to embrace such ways..."
Lumikani nodded, mute and chastised.
"You are responsible for our future, Lumikani. It is time we ensured you are doing your job. Your daughters will be required to train with the other Elaria, and we will ensure they get proper education. I cannot allow such extreme views of tolerance for our future, I do hope you understand."
As cordial as the Matron sounded, Lumikani did not mistake the threat for if she refused. Nodding again, they exchanged a few more pleasantries about the two girls, before the elder Alkidike turned away and dismissed Lumikani with not more than a wave.
Lumikani rushed away, her mind spinning with the discussion she had. She didn't feel shame, but she did feel frustration, distrust, and anger. Pure, blinding anger that such sisters would dare speak such words to the Matron. Even with her daughters doing the training, Lumikani would ensure they did no more than needed, and still got proper education from herself.
No, she did not hate her sisters, but she felt a sense of mistrust. Someone felt the need to attack her family, to threaten her life by going to the Matron. She would find out who that was, and she would enact her own judgement.
She had something new to fight for, something she stood for, and no one threatened her family.
