Return
Aminah’s steady steps one her trip back to Tale were sure-footed and bold. She felt like she had purpose. She wanted change in her life and she had found the plans to make that happen here. She knew she had to move away from her parents, and she knew that they would understand. Aminah was an adult now, and at 18 years old it was almost weird for her to still live with her parents. Not that that bothered her, her parents loved her to no end, and she knew that they would be hurt for a while that she would want to move, but they would support her. And besides, she would only be moving houses, she didn’t even want to leave the village she was in. Keilana was a friend she didn’t want to be away from.
Aminah climbed up one of Sauti’s steep rocky hills and searched for another foot hole by touch. She might have gotten here with no problem, but that wasn’t without some fear. Ever since falling out of that tree when she was younger, Aminah was just slightly afraid of heights and even though she would do what she had to, she didn’t have to be happy about it. She couldn’t look down though, making touch something of a necessity for her to get home again. It was a good thing there were only a handful of these hills that she had to cross.
Her foot made contact with a ledge she could support herself on, but as she leaned her weight onto that leg, something like thunder sounded. Aminah’s heart skipped a beat and she lost her hold on the rock, falling the four feet to the ground. She screamed on the way down and hit the hard floor with a thud. She could have done without that. Another loud crack of thunder resounded through the hills surrounding her and she put her arms over her head, suddenly afraid for herself. What the hell was making those sounds? Was someone here to hurt her? It was thunder… but couldn’t be. There wasn’t a cloud in the sky.
Aminah lifted her head from her arms and peaked at her surroundings. She couldn’t see anything, but when she stood to get up, another crack sounded. Now that she wasn’t as sure of an ambush, she returned to the place she had first heard the crack. It was surprising the see what was making all the noise, but there it was, a small rodent. It looked like it was about ready to die of freight. Aminah reached her hand out to it, ”It’s alright, I won’t hurt you.” She hoped her voice might sooth it at least a little bit. It backed away from her hand, cracking its tail once more, before its nose began to twitch in the air. It smelt something. Aminah’s eyebrows rose at the thing. Did Aminah smell? She sniffed her clothes, but then realized what it was. The little animal seemed to realize what it was at the exact same time and jumped onto Aminah’s pack she had been carrying. The little thing wormed its way into her sack and Aminah could only laugh. She still had food from earlier waiting there.
She opened the bag and was greeted with the little moracker nibbling on a lily pad. ”Well, you’re adorable aren’t you?” She said with a smile. She reached her hand in and stroked her finger against the little guy’s head. It leaned into her fingers and continued to nibble. ”Well, if you want to stay with me you can.” She giggled at the little guy’s excitement for food. ”So what should I call you? And for that matter, what are you? Are you a little boy mouse, or a little girl?” She was practically cooing at the thing.
Aminah was a bit unsure as to how she could affirm its gender. She tried to gently stick her hand into the bag with it and feel around for some sign, but the moracker wasn’t too comfortable with that and neither was Aminah. She decided that the best thing to do was to just go for it, and she grabbed the little guy up and flipped it over, checking for parts. ”Oh! A boy. Ok. Ummm…” She put the moracker back down and it chittered angry words to Aminah. ”Sorry little boy, I had to know.” She pushed some more food its way and pet his head again. It seemed to forgive her and continue eating. ”Hmmm, how about Niro? I like Niro. Do you?” The little moracker continued to eat without giving Aminah a second glance. ”Well that settles it! Niro it is, and you’re all mine now. I’m glad you like food, because you’ll be having plenty of it.”
Aminah pulled the bag closer to her and continued home, her new friend in tow and happily munching away.

Settled
Aminah had gotten back from her recent trip to Sauti just days ago. Though the trip was short, it was necessary. She had met people there. In particular she had met one person, whom still bugged her mind to this day. And a new friend.
Niro was chittering to Aminah as she was preparing to feed him. In the few days since she had returned from Sauti, she had moved into a vacant house closer to the rest of town, gathered all of her things from her parent’s house, and started to train Niro to be a pet, rather than the skittish animal that he was. The house was small compared to her parents. It was only one room, with the kitchen, bedroom, and living area all combined into one place. But it was nice and it was homey. She had already started to redecorate the place the way she wanted it. She had curtains up on the windows, plants near the sills, and she was starting to train vines up the outside of the house; partly because she liked the look of it, and partly because the vines would insulate the house and keep it cool during the day.
Plants were wonderful, and since she had come back from Zena all that time ago – it felt like forever since she had gone even though it hadn’t been all that long – she had started a makeshift garden under her parent’s house. While her parents had decided to build into the canopy of the tree and off of the ground, her home was on the floor. But that was alright with her. She had brought all of her plants with her from her parent’s and was already starting to restructure her ‘back yard’ into a suitable environment for plants. It was another thing her magic was good for. And with her new home on the ground, she could get to her garden more easily and harvest things for inside without having to climb up anything.
Aminah finished setting the food for Niro and rubbed behind his ears. He really liked that, and it was one way that she was able to get him to be more friendly towards her. She left through the back door of the house and into the garden, preparing another long day of work to get it all set up the way she envisioned.
Her garden was starting to become luscious now, her magic helping the leaves grow and the foods ripen. Woven planters hung from low hanging tree branches in tiers and the ground was covered in knee-high plants. There were small pathways flowing between crops and the air was humid overhead; something of a miracle in the dry Tale heat. She had learned to use her water magic to constantly tend to the young plants and was working on figuring out a makeshift irrigation system for when she was away. She preferred to be there though and care for her babies with her own hands. She tied back her shirt and her hair to keep them from falling in the way, something that was necessary for the early set up. She had gathered more plants yesterday and had them all prepped and ready to go by the back door. Aminah had found something she loved to do, and who knew, maybe someday she could teach her children.

Destruction
Aminah left the congratulations of the village and returned to her house. The night was intense and it left her as just a ball of nerves. The front of her home appeared normal, it hid everything that was scorched and destroyed by those... those things. She didn't know what they were.
She pushed open the front door and was greeted by the scampering and cracking of Niro's tail. It put a smile on Aminah's face to know that he was alright and waiting for her to get home. She bent over to pick him up and felt the sting of the burn on her thigh and winced. She had almost forgotten about that. She scooped Niro up and he scampered around her shoulders, ringing himself around her like she was going to somehow disappear again and she sighed, petting him under the chin and snuggling close to his fur.
The bed looked so comfortable and how was she supposed to deny that? But there were still things that needed doing. She wasn't hungry, not even in the least, but she knew Niro wouldn't want to forgive her if she skipped out on his dinner. She pulled his food from a cabinet and poured him a bowl. It was the kind of food she only gave him when she was too lazy to cook for the two of them and for that he wasn't pleased, but she put him on the floor and patted his head with a sad nod. "I know, I know. But this is the best I can do for you tonight buddy." He scrunched his nose at the offering of food and apologies, but after a few moments dug in anyways. "I knew you wouldn't mind too much." She breathed out as she stood from her painful crouch on the floor. She had to do something about the burn before she could sleep.
She lifted her belt off and away from her body before peeling up her shorts gently, letting her scorched skin touch air and assessing the damage. The shorts were singed, there would be no use trying to repair them, she had enough to get by without that pair. But her thigh. She winced at the sight. It was grotesque. She frowned and knew that this was going to get worse over the next couple of days. She could already feel the pain of it now that her adrenaline was wearing down. She pulled water from the well and poured drops of this herb and that extract until she knew it would sooth at least some of the sting before soaking a cloth into the bowl. With cautious hands she took a quick breath in and pressed the wet cloth to the melon sized burn on the side of her leg. The pain of it had her crying out. Maybe she couldn't do this alone. The tears were already in her eyes as she realized that her night was far from over and those bugs had left their mark on her.
She tugged the shorts closer to their original place, careful to not touch the wound. She would need a healer for this.
She left Niro in the house, promising to him that she would return before moving out into the dim light of the early dawn. She hadn't realized just how much time had passed. Would there be anyone awake at this hour? She would have turned back and just went to bed if the burn wasn't throbbing after her attempt to treat it. It sent dull pain through her entire body like a wave cresting over and over again. She wouldn't be able to take this all night. She cupped her hand gingerly over the area, hoping to alleviate some of the sting, but of course that wasn't going to work. She frowned and circled where she stood, hoping to find one of the healers' lights on. There were three in her part of the village, but all of the lights were out. An elderly woman not only lived the closest, but she also lived in a house on the floor of the forest, and it was her that Aminah trusted most, so she hobbled her way to the poor woman's door, already working up her apology. With a weak knock she waited, hoping the woman would wake up and answer her call.
Bent over and frail looking, the woman tugged open the door and took one look at Aminah before the sharp look of someone who knew that what were doing came into her eyes. "You should have came sooner dear." She beckoned Aminah into the home and ushered her onto the cot she used to heal. "I... I would have done it myself, but I'm afraid I can't... take care of it myself." Her voice was cracking with the strain. Aminah knew that she was a crybaby but she was hoping that it would hold itself until she could be alone.
The woman was already busy mixing this and that and preparing all that needed to be done. "Take off your shorts, let me get a look at it." Aminah didn't hesitate to get them off, though she did slow as she reached the hardest part to remove without bothering the wound. The woman turned to look and after a few moments of inspecting made a clicking sound from deep in her throat. "That mark will stay with you, you know. It's deep, and far too much is gone." She gave Aminah a small pat on the knee before returning to her mixing.
Aminah let her head fall back and stared at the ceiling of the house. She felt empty. The woman came back with her bowl and instructed Aminah to lay on her side, tenderly patting the young woman's hand, offering her apologies. "This is going to hurt, but you already know that." She pressed the cloth to Aminah's thigh and Aminah screamed out in pain. She bit down on her fist to stop the noise, the tears streaming now, soaking her face in water. The woman winced with her, knowing all too well the pain that she was feeling.
Once the wound was cleaned, and Aminah couldn't keep her eyes open any more, hoping for a happier place, the old woman let up. "Once I wrap it you can finally get some sleep. Would you like to stay here?" Her fingers were quick as she pulled Aminah back to a seated position and placed the clothed on the wound before wrapping the dressing around her leg. It was over before Aminah could answer. "No. I'm... fine. I need to go back to my home. I can rest there." She offered with a sad smile. The pain had her head reeling, but she would rather be in her bed with Niro.
"Well, you know how to care for it now, right Dear? Mhmmm." She answered her own question. She offered a hand to help Aminah stand and Aminah gladly took it.
With a few last words of encouragement the woman let Aminah leave for the night and she was back at her home at last. She could finally rest. She felt the tears building up inside her again, but she didn't stop them this time. Niro greeted her as usual and she led him to the bed where she let him sleep over her head on the pillow and she let her tears flow heavy down the sides of her face. Things would be hard for a while. It was the last thought to follow her before she drifted to sleep, the herbs taking effect and letting her finally get some rest.
