Aminah stretched her bones and stepped out into the already bright light. It was morning in Tale and Aminah eyed the spot in her garden that she was just beginning to rebuild. She had enlisted help to bring back a number of Jauhar replacement plants, and she was trying to build her garden to be self-sufficient in the case of a fire. The dense Jauhar trunks and stems didn’t catch much of the damage and seemed to protect the smaller plants within their reach, so Aminah thought that if she could perimeter her garden with tall, thick trunked trees, she could save them from any future harm.
She walked up to a couple of the not-yet-planted saplings and rubbed the bark. It was smooth and cool to the touch. She lifted the thing and carried it to its permanent spot in the garden and dropped it with a light thud. It was small, but it was still heavy, being so thick.
When the thing dropped, something popped its head out of the foliage. Aminah nearly jumped back in surprise before realizing what it was. A kipepwa? All the way out here? Aminah assumed that it had been nested into the tree before they had pulled it out of the ground. It looked like it was only a baby. Before Aminah could save it or help it at all, it spread its wings and took to flight. Aminah lifted her arms, hoping to catch it before it would out of reach and possibly return it to Jauhar, but it was gone too soon. Maybe it would return sometime and Aminah could give it another chance.
