Aminah hummed a tune to herself while her hands worked the earth around her. Her garden had suffered enough damage for Aminah to have to work for months to restore what had been lost. She was working from one end to the other, trying her best to salvage what could be saved and to discard or repurpose what was lost. The Tale plants didn’t take well to the sudden change in surroundings and the ones that weren’t touched by fire were beginning to wilt from the lack of moisture the abundance of plants had provided.
The vines that Aminah had grown to cross the space with air plants were torched in some spots and creating a mess in space above her head. It was sad really, but Aminah would have to get over it eventually. There’s only so much a person can sulk over the bad before they have to make a change in their lives to accommodate for what had happened. Sacrifices had to be made of course: she wasn’t able to spend as much time with the ever growing Sathe, and her parents were a bit worried about her work habits, but she had to keep pushing though. Her garden was an advantage to the people of Yera and provided food when other foods were scarce.
Aminah felt her stomach growl at the thought of food and sat back on her heels, wiping her dirt-covered hands against her clothes. It was about time for lunch, but Aminah couldn’t bring herself to stop yet.

Aminah sighed and looked down at her work and the work she had ahead of her. She had already been working nearly two weeks on just cleaning her garden before she could even replace some of the lost plants. She wiped her forehead with the back of her hand and stood slowly, brushing the dirt from her knees and stretching her legs. She did about as much as she could so far to the section that she was working on and shook her legs out before moving over to the next section. The hat she wore on her head as she worked managed to flop lower and lower the longer she worked and she was constantly pushing the brim up to clear her vision.
She pushed her hat up once more and paused, thinking that she was hearing a small rustling sound nearby. She looked around her quizzically, wondering what it could have been before locating the source of the sound. It was coming from one of the thicker parts of the garden; one of the Jauhar areas that she had recently planted and was one of the lucky few that were nearly untouched by fire. Aminah walked over to the area, her bare feet padding softly against the ground and squatted near where she thought she heard the rustling. The sound stopped, but as Aminah stopped moving and quieted down, the rustling noises started once more. Aminah peeled back some of the thicker foliage and came face to face with the source of the sound.

Three tiny merik stopped in the midst of what they were doing to look at Aminah. The merik flicked their tails, assessing whether what they were seeing was dangerous before continuing to do what it was they were doing. They were nibbling at some of the only remaining fruit in the garden. Aminah’s eye narrowed in distaste. It didn’t matter how cute these things were, they were touching what was already a vulnerable part of her life. Aminah leaned back on her heels and reached forward, aiming for the little guys. ”Shoo! Get out of here! Can’t you see these plants are sick?” She shouted out. She couldn’t quite reach the meriks from where she was squatting, so she picked up a bunt nearby stick and waved it into the space they were occupying. ”Go on! Get out!” She scowled at the little things, knowing she shouldn’t be so mean, but not being able to help herself. The last thing she wanted was the healthy plants to fail her too.
Two of the meriks scampered off immediately, knowing that the big thing in front of them was the threat. The other one, the smallest of the three, seemed to look Aminah in the eye before it continued to munch on the fruit, slashing into the husk with its sharp claws. Aminah waved the stick once more and the thing let out a sharp small growl. It picked up the fruit that it had severed from the bush and ran off the with others, taking a small piece of Aminah’s garden with it.
