Summer vacation was in its home stretch, and Lydia was stretched out on a lawn chair, wearing her favorite sundress and flipping through a Farsi phrasebook. It was unlikely she would ever need to know the language, considering her parents hadn’t even let her out of the house in days. Her dream of exploring the world seemed farther away than ever. That wasn’t enough to stop her dreaming, not even close, but it was really frustrating. She was sixteen years old! Clearly old enough to take care of herself. By the rules of some cultures she would be an adult already. And yet she was stuck at home, listening to her parents, and in less than a week she’d be back at Crystal Academy for her junior year.
Lydia was both dreading going back to school and looking forward to it. On the one hand, she had rather enjoyed her vacation. She'd gotten to hang out with her friends, going on day trips to the beach or museums or other fun places. Even spending time with her family felt more relaxing and less stressful when she wasn't constantly asserting her own independence. Her parents had seen firsthand that she was able to take care of herself without their constant hovering, and aside from a certain incident around Christmastime, even her powered identity hadn't gotten her into enough trouble to make them worry.
All until the last weeks of vacation, when she'd gone to a party where a fire had started and had suffered from smoke inhalation. That was the story she'd told her parents, anyway. Lydia couldn't exactly give them the truth, that she'd been at a meeting of costumed alien heroes who'd been ambushed by the villains. So instead, she'd let them think she was silly enough to party with people who couldn't keep an eye on their candles, and she'd had to suffer through doctor's visits and daily check-ins and constant queries of "how are you feeling today?" For a while her parents had even discussed pulling her out of the dorms at Crystal, but luckily Lydia had been able to convince them that she was safer there, surrounded by guards and teachers and other students, than she would be at home.
It wasn’t, she told herself, a lie. Not exactly. While it was unlikely that anyone would try to break into her house, with its excellent security system and high fences, Crystal’s security was better. And the activities that got her hurt weren’t exactly sanctioned by the student council. Even if she was stuck at home, she would still have to be a senshi. It would just be harder, and her family would have a higher chance of getting hurt, which was the last thing Lydia wanted. So she endured her temporary isolation, letting her parents fuss over her and her doctors check her breathing until she wanted to scream. It would all be over soon, at least for a while. Funny, that school would end up saving her from her vacation.
She turned back to her book, flipping to the page on salutations and introductions. Those were always good to know. “Hâlè šomâ chetor ast?” Her pronunciation was terrible, but she hoped it got the point across. It would be terrible to end up in Iran or Tajikistan and accidentally insult someone. And Lydia still had every intention of heading on her world tour as soon as she was able, even if her asthma, allergies, worrying parents, and the Negaverse teamed up to stop her. “Xubam, xeyli mamnun,” she continued, answering her own question. “Xošbaxtam!”
