Mail Time See how I've grown...? He had gotten the letter at his new address he had read it over a couple of times and couldn't help but feel a bit of dread. No matter how much he tried to set it aside and not think about it this meant that maybe sometime soon his daughter was possibly going to get a dragon or some such if his sources were to be believed. As 'common' as strange things like this was in Gaia it didn't mean he felt prepared nor did he feel ready to inform his pregnant fiancée that not only was there a baby on the way but a dragon would soon be living with them as well. He reached up and ruffled at his hair and felt eyes upon him and when he gazed down he saw Miranda who stared up at him curiously.
Erf.
"Hey, Squishie. Wanna do some paperwork with me?" Might as well do as the letter asks.
Miranda nodded, doing anything with Papi was awesome! He took her hand and led her into the dining room. Valeri helped her into a chair after stacking some books up so she could be a bit above table height, he got out her crayons and set down the worksheet for her before he sat down next to her and set his cane to lean against the side of the table. Valeri helped her read each section in a patient manner and then watched with amusement as she wrote in her answers, particularly when she filled in her age. Miranda wouldn't allow her guardian to help her spell one of her favorite colors and ended up using the slightly longer and more difficult to spell word with very little trouble.
Strange girl.
After they were finished Valeri rewarded her with a snack and then got out a sheet of paper of his own and began to write his return note to the company while Miranda ate. Afterward they would play a board game together. Quote: Dear ... Whoever at D-Corp,
Miranda is doing just fine I think, she's pretty happy go-lucky and loving child. She makes friends pretty easily most of the time and doesn't seem to let much hold her back. I've been keeping her rather active and making sure she keeps taking her medication. She complains now and again but what child doesn't when they have to do something they do not particularly enjoy of see as 'useless'. Thanks to our efforts, however, she has slimmed down to a point where she has a bit of an easier time moving about. She is not thin by any means but she has an easier time now getting around.
She smiles a lot and likes to have fun and the only frustration I ever see from her is when she talks because she lisps her 's' sounds a lot so it sounds like 'th' whenever she speaks. Miranda fears not being understood so I might work on getting her help for that if possible...
Her fashion sense is kind of quirky. Miranda will wear dresses and nice things but she will often put her own spin on it from time to time. Like wearing her converse sneakers instead of nice dress shoes, she doesn't like the fact that dress shoes have no traction to them and refuses to wear them. Miranda's hair has grown enough to be styled which seems to please my Fiancée to no end because she will often insist on putting it in braids or pig-tails. Miranda wouldn't let it get cut because she wanted to try and have long hair like her 'Mami'. Though no matter what is done to the hair she has to be wearing her strawberry hairclip that she had modified herself.
Her sneakers, rarely, if ever are the same color. One is purple and the other is pink, usually. She likes to draw and doodle all over them; I haven't tried to dissuade her from doing so.
Uhh, I got nothing else.
- Valeri Stark (( Just an example. Have as much fun with it as you want. The colors and stuff don't have to be followed -exactly-.
Dress, Dress From All Angles, Shoes, Socks, Hairclip. Hair has grown to about just about shoulder length. ))

Warning! Warning! Oh geeze... He couldn't really avoid it anymore. Too many meetings with other children from the same place that Miranda had come from, to many things that seemed to connect when he did any actual research, though his findings were moderately slim. Either way Other deserved to know what could possibly be coming into her house sooner or later. It wasn't like he meant to keep it a secret or even keep it from her in general. So much had been going on from the engagement, preparing to move, and getting ready for a baby...It just escaped his mind much like other things liked to escape his mind during crucial moments.
Damned slippery brain.
It was a good idea to warn her before any further mail came to inform him of things, though he doubted Other would open his mail he wouldn't exactly stop her from it either. She was his wife-to-be and she could do so if she wished, he had nothing to hide from her. If his hunch was right...Now was a good time to warn her.
Valeri found Other in the living room doing some light straightening up, he cleared his throat to get her attention and once he had it he began, "Other, darling, I need to tell you something and you need to sit down before I do."
Other furrowed her brow and carefully moved to sit staring up at her fiancé questioningly. What could he possibly have to tell her? He had told her everything thus far right? She folded her hands over the bulge that had formed where her stomach was, her pregnancy showing quite loudly and proudly, "What is it?"
He shifted his weight mostly to his cane as he stared at her; there was a very good reason why he had her sit. Valeri smiled hoping that if he smiled that the news wouldn't be such a shock or come across as something bad, "Well you know I adopted Miranda from a place called D-Corp, right?"
The young woman nodded her head again as she stared at him, of course she remembered!
"Well, from what I have noticed from the others I happened to meet from there and some conversations I have had," Valeri continued on, "she is going to get a dragon to take care of and to work with," the ginger-and-purple haired man finished slowly as he stared at her.
At first she laughed though it was a bit of an uncertain laughter, "Hahah...ha..ha...That's real funny, Val!"
He was a little glad that he had timed this chat during a time where Miranda was napping, "No, I'm not joking," he replied with his smile faltering as her face fell and the laughing stopped. She stared at him in shock and he felt an odd lurch in his gut at the stare.
"Th-there is going to be a dragon in my house?" Other squeaked softly her fingertips clutching at the fabric upon her stomach.
Valeri nodded slowly and tried to put a hopeful spin, "Maybe it'll be no bigger than Gozer is now, he's what? Ten or more inches?" His tone lacked confidence as Other's face paled more as the realization continued to dawn on her.
"A big..scary...fire breathing dragon...? Here?!" Other squeaked in a trembling tone.
He moved to sit next to her his hands moving to take hers and he shook his head, "I..I hope not! I hope it's a nice one," he said sincerely though a bit lamely. How could he be sure? They wouldn't give them something that would endanger anyone would they? Certainly not that'd be a very horrible way to go about things. Valeri figured they had facilities that they could move to things they could do but he wasn't going to make Other move and he wasn't going to go through the whole moving process yet again himself.
Still Other's home couldn't possibly support a dragon for very long if it got to a certain size...
Other stared at him with her horrified expression she turned her hands to grasp tightly to his for a moment before she carefully stood up, "I..I need to go lay down."
Valeri flinched a bit and stared up at her as he reluctantly let go of her hand, "O..Okay. It'll be alright, sweetheart, I promise," he'd make it alright. "I love you...S..Sorry I didn't tell you sooner."
"I...I love you too, it's okay..." she murmured distractedly as she wandered upstairs and disappeared into their bedroom and closed the door.
He didn't have time to feel guilty for soon Miranda came wandering down the stairs quite sleepily. She wandered over to him and rested her head against his thigh with a small yawn, "Thir'th'ty an I wan m'th'nack."
Valeri put on his best smile and brushed a hand through her shoulder length hair, "Yes, of course," technically nothing was wrong. It wasn't her fault, it wasn't his fault. He could place blame on D-Corp but really it wouldn't stop anything or solve anything. They would just deal with things as they came and adapt, like always.
Unexpected things always seemed to follow him like a plague.

Just keep swimmin'... Swimmin', swimmin'... It was one of those parent and child swim classes since most children tended to trust their parent more than a stranger to keep them afloat. Valeri wore a simple dark blue swim trunks and Miranda wore a bright purple children's swimsuit with little white flowers on it and a bit of skirting around the waist. Val was allowed to keep his cane nearby on the ledge of the pool where the shallow end was located. An extra swim instructor was assigned to them just in case they would need a little more help later on or if Valeri needed a break.
Valeri resented this but he accepted the assistance with quiet dignity and for the most part ignored the hovering presence of a young woman named Erika.
"Doing good Squishie," Val said with a smile as he held onto her tiny hands while she kicked her chubby little legs. She had been a little uncertain about the whole going into the water concept once more but once she was in Miranda enjoyed it immensely. The Erika lady was nice and the lady that was showing how to kick about in the water was nice too! In general Miranda, at least, had no complaints at all unlike her guardian.
Erika moved in and made some corrections, "Miranda not so fast!" she laughed a bit as she tried to reach for the small girl's hand to try and subtly take over but Valeri stared at her quietly, the smile suddenly gone. Erika's eyes widened a bit and sheepishly she backed away murmuring a soft 'sorry' during her retreat.
The older man stared at the 'helper' a moment or two longer before the smile suddenly appeared on his face and he returned his attention to his daughter. He could coach her on his own thank you very much. The lady didn't need to hold onto HIS daughter's hands to correct her, she could just tell her what to do and that would be the end of it. No touchy. None.
Miranda didn't seem to catch onto the mini-battle that had just occurred as she was busily correcting the speed at which she paddled wanting to be a good girl and do things right, "Papi! Papi! I do'th'e it! Th'ee?" The rat-girl chimed cheerfully.
Valeri stared down at his daughter and the smile return to his lips and he nodded encouragingly, "That's my girl~," he cooed at her cheerfully. It was almost chilling how sudden his personality turned from angry to sweet within a matter of seconds. Erika shuddered and crossed her arms over her chest as she wondered why she always had to deal with the 'over protective' parents with a bit of a sulky expression that was ill hidden.
The rat-girl paddled along happily and soon lessons extended beyond just holding onto someone's hands and paddling. Valeri quietly moved his daughter to a distance that was instructed and then edged back a bit and encouraged her to swim up to him.
At first Miranda didn't seem to catch a hang of the act of using her paddling to swim forward and again Erika tried to come to the 'rescue'. Though she was stopped by an acidic stare of the ginger haired man and a clear and very firm voice speaking, "You're hindering us more than helping us. Maybe, just maybe, you should go help the instructor instead."
Erika frowned a bit, "But you're disa--" she cut herself short as he narrowed his eyes at her. The glasses the man wore did nothing to lessen the effectiveness of the glare, "R..Right then. I'll be...over...toward the front..if you need anything." There was no graceful way to bow out of this after that little faux pas.
The tall man nodded a bit and then returned his attention to his daughter who was giving him a curious look after that little exchange. Miranda had caught onto that unpleasantness but he tried to smooth it over with a smile, "Come on sweetheart, and swim to me!"
The small albino girl gave her parent a bit of a critical look for a moment before her smile returned and she resumed to trying to work out the process of swimming. With some (very) distant instruction from Erika and helpful hints from her Papi the small chubby girl managed it swimming up to Valeri with an exuberant squeal as she flung her small arms about his midsection.
"Got you Papi!" she giggled softly as she nestled her face against his abdomen. The man laughed softly and gently petted his daughter's wet hair between her rat-like ears.
"You're a good girl," he assured her cheerfully and then watched as she started to paddle about proudly (and clumsily) with her newly acquired skills. Valeri was happy that she had gotten to learn something new. Soon lessons drew to a close and everyone was encouraged to come back for another lesson at the same time next week. Valeri helped his daughter dry off her hair and put on her baggy shorts and light tank top. He was about to place the hat upon her head when she suddenly hugged him again causing him to be befuddled and return the embrace with a light draping of his arms about her.
"Papi not broken. Mirry not broken. We'th okay," she informed him as she squeezed him as best as she could in the embrace. Miranda turned her face up toward him and beamed a bright smile at him, "We'th get more awe'th'ome e'eryday'th!"
Valeri was so struck by this he wasn't sure what to say. The way she had suddenly presented this threw him for a new. He leaned and kissed her forehead with a small grin appearing on his lips, "That's right Squishie, we're okay," he confirmed quietly his hidden annoyances and anger melting away because of the act of a small optimistic rat-girl.
After a moment she let him go and took the hat herself and put it on as she then waited for her Papi to be ready to go as well singing a small song to herself that she had learned when he takes her out to the playground. Thus far most of the other children had been kind to his daughter but he could not help but wonder if that trend would continue. He didn't want her experiences and mindset marred because of people that knew nothing better than to hurt others.
With a cane in one hand he leaned and took her smaller hand in his and they left together after he was sure they had picked up everything that they had brought along. They would come back again for further swim lessons for Miranda but Gods help Erika if she tried to intervene again...

We've been...KATAMARI'D?! Can't go for a simple walk anymore... After the ball of rolling chaos stopped and everyone managed to get unstuck without severely injuring themselves by some strange miracle, Valeri and Miranda walked a little bit away to dust off and take stock of what happened. He straightened her hat on her head and made sure his cane was in one piece before he took her hand and stood up. He gazed back of what was left of the chaos and then looked down at his daughter who was thankfully unharmed. If anyone would get bruises it would be him since he took the brunt of it.
"...Did that just happen?" Valeri asked the small rat-girl.
Miranda gazed back behind her and then looked back at him with a wide grin and nodded. To her it had been fun, something different that broke up a routine. She hadn't known to be scared plus Papi protected her from anything bad that MIGHT have happened. So to her what had occurred a few moments ago totally happened and there was nothing wrong with it at all! Nope. "Wanna do it again'th," Miranda chattered cheerfully as she tugged at his hand and staring up at him.
He stared down at the small girl as if she had gone insane and shook his head, "I don't think we could if we tried Squishie," he pointed out quietly as they started to walk home with her again. "We going to tell Mami about this?"
"Mhm! Th'he ha'th to know! Might happen to her!" Miranda pointed out as they walked along toward home. He made a face, a very worried face.
He took a deep breath and nodded a bit and once they had gotten home they told Other what had happened and why they had not been there after her nap. Mostly it was Miranda telling the story which had lead Other to believe that it had been a made up tale completely in the child's head up until Valeri set Other aside and showed her the bruises.
Other fretted and worried but once assured that both were okay and only one of them were bruised up, the pregnant woman seemed to relax (slightly) and she went off to prepare dinner.
Valeri moved and sat next to Miranda as she practiced her writing on a sheet of paper and stared down at it to see that she had drawn a recreation of the event on a part of the paper. He shuddered and gently patted her on the head, "Glad you had fun, sweetheart," he said wearily wondering just why a simple walk turned out ... not that simple.
Miranda keened happily and leaned into the pat on her head and resumed her handiwork.

Noticing the Little Things She's gotten bigger... Valeri had known that Miranda was growing and he had gotten her new clothes to reflect that along with the bit of weight loss she had attained due to her more active lifestyle. She wasn't skinny but she wasn't struggling to get around as much anymore either. Where prior she might have waddled a bit where she walked the rat girl now took more stable steps and got around much easier and to be honest it was a relief, he didn't want his daughter to struggle more than she already would have to due to growing up having to take medications each day to keep her condition under control. Hopefully as she got older the hypothyroidism wouldn't spring a nasty little surprise on them via puberty.
Nothing was certain but it was worth hoping that it wouldn't happen.
She had matured and even acted a lot older than when she was a toddler. Her reasoning had developed and she had learned new things. Her handwriting was slowly getting neater and she was starting to misspell things a lot less. Miranda looked toward Valeri and Other a lot less for help and actually started helping THEM out instead around the house by doing simple chores and making sure her clothes were ready for laundry. She enjoyed helping her parents and often did so without complaint.
One thing she wouldn't let either of her parents forget about was the fact that soon they would be going in to look at her egg. The dragon egg. The egg with a dragon in it that was back at the laboratories of D-Corp and waiting for a visit.
Valeri sighed a bit into his morning coffee as he watched his daughter roam about and get her own bowl, the cereal, and the jug of milk. Miranda managed to fix her own breakfast without making either of her parents help. He shifted a bit in his seat as she came to sit nearby and start to eat her meal; they had earlier taken care of their medication ritual so all that was left was for her to eat.
"When'd you get to be such a big girl?" he asked her with a small chuckle.
Miranda paused her eating and stared at Valeri as if he had just grown a third head, "Papi! You're bein' th'illy," she replied with a small laugh and returned to eating, "I alway'th growin'!" she pointed out. Miranda didn't seem in too much of a hurry to 'grow up' in fact she was one of the few children content to be just that: a child. She wanted to learn and she was content, for now, to live under the rules of her household. It wasn't like they kept her from doing anything 'fun' anyways. If she wanted to draw on her shoes they often allowed it. If she wanted to sing nonsense then they didn't discourage it and if she did a weird dance...Well that was just fine just so long as she didn't break anything.
The ginger haired man gave a small laugh and shook his head, "I guess so. Still you used to need our help with breakfast and now you got it all on your own and you didn't even really need to use your stepping stool except to get your bowl," he pointed out with a small smirk.
"Ah-yuh~. It'th too high to get into the bowl cupboard without it," Miranda retorted cheerfully as she poked her spoon about in her cereal of freeze-dried strawberries and cornflakes.
Valeri laughed a bit and nodded, "Maybe I should start giving you a bigger allowance too since you've been doing more around the house."
Miranda's eyes widened a bit and she wiggled in her chair, "Then I can get more gift'th for my friend'th! An' buy mys'th'elf th'ome neat thing'th!" she said cheerfully.
He nodded a bit, "Only if you save it up, right?"
"Right!" Miranda replied and then resumed eating while Valeri resumed reading his newspaper both content in each other's company even in silence.
