Sentimental
Valentines day shopping was impossible, Rook along with Andrea had been through isles upon isles of pink, lacy and smelly things. He'd seen chocolates and perfumes and all manner of things that just didn't seem right to him.
Even the things Andrea had pointed out that were typical things girls liked seemed wrong to him, though he was grateful to have his sibling along during the trip. The blonde navigated crowds better than he did projecting a move out of my way vibe that made the masses of people also shoppign for the holiday part.
Still, Rook was determined to find something for Galleai. She has his friend and important to him. He wouldn't say he loved her though, Love was a thing adults did that involved kissing and funny looks and such. It was supposed to be a feeling too but Rook couldn't be so sure of that. You were supposed to love your family and Rook cared very deeply for his family, would do anything for them but he didn't have any special feelings about them he could label as love. They were more important to him than anyone else though , he would admit that.
Either way he cared about Galleai too, not as much as his family but still, she was his best friend and he thought the care between best friends deserved a present on the special day just as much. After all he had to give all his classmates valentines cards and he didn't even like some of them.
Thus the grey skinned boy's search continued for the perfect present. He'd ruled out candy, Gall had enjoyed the funnel cake at the carnival but that had been different and so many of the chocolates were heart shaped and it seemed silly to give Gall something like that. He didn't think his friend would appreciate chocolate hearts.
Perfumes had seemed good until Andrea had pointed out that girls usually liked to pick out their own becuase they knew how they wanted to smell. Rook had agreed especially after finding most of the stuff the store lady let him smell was strong and didn't smell at all like anything that reminded him of Gall.
A half hour later Rook was still stuck on gift and was starting to find all the red and pink decorations cluttering the mall to be irritating instead of making him think about happy mushy thoughts. The boy held some fries in his three fingered hand and let his Crimson eyes scan the food court and surrounding shops as he ate. This was starting to become hopeless.
" What about that place" Andrea suggested from across the small table where they sat.
Rook's eyes followed her finger to stare at a store on the other side of the food court. Make-a- friend. From what the boy could make out you took a stuffingless stuffed animal and stuffed it yourself. You could also dress them. "Maybe" He'd looked at some stuffed animals already and rejected them.
~
In the end Rook didn't end up choosing a plushie to make for his friend but a small add on he'd found in the store had inspired him about what to make so it wasn't a bad thing after all. Now all Rook needed was time

Out on the lake
" Rook relax and just remember don't move the rod till you see the bobber go under then pull back and forth and crank the reel" Carol lectured her son gently. The woman was no master fisher but she knew the basics which was what she was trying to pass on. Carol having chosen fishing as an optimal type of parent child trip with Rook becuase it was simple and followed a predictable pattern.
Well reeling in each fish would be different but the general motions were repetitive and Carol had begun to see that Rook seemed to thrive in a stable environment and become visibly distressed in any other. Fishing had seemed like a good idea then to bond over and it was a valuable skill as well.
The mother and son pair had been sitting out of the lake for an hour and hadn't caught a thing. It didn't seem to be bothering either of them yet although from time to time Rook would fidget and during the three times he had hooked something he'd panicked once he'd reeled the fish close enough to the boat to really fight and be seen, each time they'd managed to tear themselves free
It was early in the morning and there was still a fair amount of fog on the lake Rooks at beside Carol in a small rented motor boat. The bright orange life vest Rook was wearing clashed horridly with the boy's grey skin but it was a rule that out on the lake all children wore life vests. Carol knew Rook could swim fine and probably better without the thing but rules were rules. Besides with the fog it was probably a bit safer.
As time passed in relative silence or short but meaningful bouts of conversation, Carol let her eyes look to the sky as the sun rose in a beautiful collage of pink, purples and azures. The sunlight began to reflect off the lake making it glisten like glass and every now and then the local shorebirds would start up a little singing contest.
Carol could stay out here forever but she actually had to start work at noon and the girl's would probably want her home to see them after school. As it was they'd be waking up to a baby sitter though they'd been informed of that the night before.
The woman watched as the red and white bobber sunk below the surface and as much as she wanted to coach Rook again, she could see his faced screwed up in concentration. Slowly but surely the boy reeled the fish in his rod dipping lower and thrashing about as he struggled with the stubborn fish. Twice the fish broke the surface of the water sending water everywhere but Rooks concentration seemed secure this time. Finally the fish was at the side of the boat slapping its body against it in vain.
"Ok now hold him still while I get the net" Carol turned her back to grab the small
short poled net used to bring fish into the boat She dipped it quickly into the water. then brought it into the boat where still capture the fish proceeded to flop about unhappily.
A quick look into her son's crimson eyes told Carol he was neither ready to unhook the fish himself nor to see it die before his very eyes. With a soft sigh she reached onto the net, unhooked the blue bass and hen tossed it back into the safety of the water " alright looks like we're purely catch and release today." The smile on Rook's face was more than enough to make up for the money she could have made selling the fish.

Brought to my knees
Rook felt and looked like death warmed over but still he trudged towards the school, backpack slung over one shoulder, for one of his last few days of classes. It was this, keeping a regular schedule that was all that was keeping the boy from falling apart. Even following his normal routine though wasn't easy or full effective, the grey skinned boy still felt sick in some manner or another most of the time no matter what he did. The worse it got the more Rook lost hope that he'd ever start feeling better, feeling normal again. Earlier in the week he and his mother had gone to the doctor who'd confirmed that he was running a fever but could find nothing wrong with him. Next stop medical wizard who agreed with the doctor although he did say there an an indeterminable magic at hand as well, whatever was making Rook ill remained a mystery though. Though his mother suggested it was perhaps an annoyed classmate pulling a prank Rook had dismissed that theory. As far as the crimson eyed boy was concerned it had all started a few months ago though he hadn't been ill or in pain then. First random strange urges to do .. something that he couldn't explain, it certainly wasn't early onset hormones though becuase the doctors said his hormones levels were normal and Rook was still a bit disturbed by the thought of romantic kissy stuff. Still he had weird urges and odd tugging feelings in his stomach that made no sense to the boy it first it had come and gone and Rook had stupidly dismissed it as aside affect of getting older. Now Rook struggled each day to not give in to feelings of being overwhelmed, easily distracted and in pain. Though for the obsessive child it was the havoc his symptoms wrecked on his normal life that was most stressing. Skin slick with sweat off and on and muscles randomly tensing his hand writing was suddenly nothing like it used to be and decidedly not as neat, this agitated him especially since no amount of redoing the writing ever got him what he wanted. On a different but similar note Rook was finding it harder and harder to focus on much of anything for extended periods of time making even simple relaxing moments like watching tv or reading a book hard. Even his dreams seemed weird, flashes of voices and people he'd never heard or met but they'd wake him up sweating and with that odd longing feeling tugging at his belly. Weather it was some magic at work or his own unstable mind Rook was also unfortunately without Gall's help or presence at all in his dreams. His mother wanted to drag him to more specialists as soon as school was out, Rook had insisted he needed to go to the end though, needed to be in a familiar environment for as long as it would last. He fever broke and resurfaced every now and then and even though he was intermittently in pain there was nothing to be done to stop it. Rook was in no actually danger as far as anyone could tell and he needed the stability his normal routine provided for him becuase the more unstable he felt the worse his symptoms seemed to get. Suddenly a crippling wave of pain washed over the boy, worse than any he;d ever felt before. His legs legs buckled and his vision grew hazy though he could see bright fresh flashes as the gems on his left arm and forehead pulsed with an internal light. Strong arms wrapped around the boy and caught him his his body surrendered to unconsciousness.

The way things change A tired but alive and healthier Rook lay on his bed writing , once again with precision, in a notebook. It felt good to be home again and to be able to log things in a neat and legible manner. While Rook's old schedule was now destroyed by a new one he needed to follow to stay healthy the grey skinned boy was tolerating the change. Happy at least to have a maintainable shedule again, a way of living life in an organized manner. June 9, 2009I never made it to school the other day, I passed out on the way there my body unable to go on. It wasn't even a normal sickness that weakened me either but a magical one. Technically it wasn't even a sickness either but too much magic. You always hear too much of something can be bad for you but to think that the thing that could hurt me was too much magic inside me? It was a very strange thing to find out.
Rook had always known he was special in some way. He obviously wasn't human with his two toes, three fingers, rubbery grey skin and the jewels embedded in his skin. Still it was only recently under Therion's guidance that he discovered what he truly was and how very different from the rest of his family that made him. Of course Rook hadn't explained much of that to his sisters yet and only a little of it to his mother. He didn't want to worry them and there was so much still even he didn't know. Anyways, Therion, who is my new mentor managed to drain enough magic out of me so that when I woke up he could show me a simple exercise to help me bleed more excess magic off. The gems on my arms have stopped glowing constantly for now but if they flash and stay that way again I have to do immediate exercises to get rid of the extra magic in my system.
It's interesting to know I have this power but sort of scary at the same time. What if I accidentally hurt someone by changing an item nearby? I have so much to learn still, so much control I need to gain. There was much to be done still before Rook was fully better, and much to be discussed about his future according to Therion. Rook was nervous and yet excited, regardless he could no longer hide from what he was and he would have to embrace it.

Lessons pt 1 why I'm here Rook sighed softly as he sat at his desk and drummed his three fingers on the polished wooden surface. It was Oak if he was remembering the pattern right and he tended to have a good memory. The grey skinned boy wasn't there to remember wood patterns or think about the soft steady beat his fingers man as they drummed however. He was there to perform magic, not event o learn it right now either just to drain his body of the buildups he was constantly getting so that he could maintain a normal life until a solution could be found. A solution that did not involve him being a slave to some person he didn't even know was of course the most proffered but Rook doubted that would happen.
Sometimes the boy wished he were normal.
His species was known as alterers, they had an innate ability they change aspects of the people around them as well as situations said people are in. Though they couldn't use it for themselves it sometime worked in their favor altering the mood or opinions of those around them in ways that could be good for them on occasion.
Rook himself had been producing this change aura lately and had he realized been affecting his family in less than positive ways, although part of him wondered if it wasn't that which had prompted Bishop to finally grow. It was a strange ability and one Rook couldn't control which bugged him, he liked control and order and things to make sense, sudden shifted of moods and personalities and why, were Therion's books arranged not by height?.
The slight misalignment of the books on a nearby shelf irked the natural organizer in Rook but he'd long since learned not to touch Therion's things. His mentor kept his things a certain way and didn't like them messed with. That or the man was testing Rook to seeoif he could resist the compulsive desire to rearrange the books. Truly a hard thing to do, the more Rook grew into his powers the more the need for organization and order took over him as if the mental desires were directly challenging his change obsesses nature
It frustrated rook to be born with such dual natures. a desire for order and an innate need to change things. For beyond the aura of change he produced the child also had the power to change objects at will. though they needed to be magical in nature and there were limits on what could be done, it was impossible to make more of something that you had started with for instance. however the rules of magic and that were later lessons Therion had said. Right now Rook was to work on simple ways to expel his magic beyond the exercises Therion had given him to work on at home as they were not sufficing anymore.
According to Therio h-
" You need to find your damned bonded and soon, you're auras affecting my staff already today and your magic is building up too fast." The man grumbled as he entered the room. " Time for your lesson."

Lessons pt 2 Let the magic flow It took little time from the moment Therion walked in for the lesson to begin, Rook had learned this was both becuase it was better for his health if that started quickly and becuase the man saw no point in small talk before work. Though, the two toed cabbage born boy had noticed that Therion was more than willing to talk once the lesson had begun. It wasn't even as distracting as he had thought it would be in fact often times the sound of the other male's voice kept Rook from focusing too hard and frustrating himself. Sometimes his mentor was kind and helpful, other times Rook was frustrated near out of his mind by the man, still he was the only one the gray skinned boy could turn to. " Alright the vial in your hand should be a bit chilly that's fine there's nothing leaking" The man assured Rook as he paced in front of him in small measured steps. " The liquid inside is a simple health tonic with a magical component meant to keep it always cool. You'll be working on changing the magical properties of it to make it always warm.. understood?" Rook nodded when Therion looked up at him for confirmation, the crimson eyed boy was determined to do this.He focused on the vial and tried to feel the magic at work inside it. It pleased Rook a little that Therion always had him working with liquids, the alterer boy had always been drawn to watery things, apparently due to his special nature. He wondered briefly if he would ever see the place Therion spoke about a planet filled mostly with water and cave systems as the majority of landmass types. It sounded like an interesting place and it made sense that living there that's why his people were as made for water as they were. Thought it wasn't that he was meant for water that explained why they used it it just explained why he liked that they did. Liquids conducted magic easier than anything else and thus it was easier to change them. Therion didn't want to challenge him too much lest it boot the amount of magic he was producing making it harder to bleed it of. Instead while they looked for the one he was meant to serve Rook worked on simple things like changing the colour of potions, the taste of tonic and now the temperatures they were at based around a magical properties within them. At least of nothing else Rook's lessons followed a logical route and it helped him deal with the distressingly every changing situations his life was falling into.

Day to Day
" I want a Triple Triple and a small hot chocolate, both double cupped, oh and two honey cruelers."
Rook nodded , rung the order up in the cash register and quickly took a bill before handing the slightly pudgy and weary looking woman standing before him some change. it was drilled into his head now, take the order, punch it up, take the money, give change then go to fill anything in the order that wasn't handled by one of the other stations. Rook was one for consistency but this was downright boring and he only did it after school three days a week. if he was honest with himself the grey skinned teen was thinking about quitting. He wasn't normally the sort that backed away from a challenge or hard work but this was just.. not working out for him. ( tbc later)
