Rook sat calmly on his blanket watching the tide go out slowly. He was waiting, not for the water to subside but for his friend to arrive. Galleai and him had talked during one of his recent dreams and she'd agreed to meet him here at the beach on Valentine's night so they could exchange gifts and hang out together. Rook was eager to see his closest friend again in the flesh.

The boy had brought a some blankets, his drums, a gift and a small cooler of food. it wasn't much and with the weather still cool even in Gambino isn't a perfect beach picnic night but it would work. The weather wasn't freezing and snow didn't cover the beach's sand so things should be fine. Now all Rook needed was to wait for Gall's arrival.

Leeward said Valentines day was a human celebration that was centered around giving candy to people. Nicola said that it used to be a day to honor a man who'd sneakily married people in secret. Either way, both had eventually agreed that it was a day to spend with a special somebody, although the coven didn't celebrate it. They spent every day with each other anyways and romance without an ulterior motive was not really their m.o. Everybody had been suprised when Galleai had said something about having plans that night and she could tell there would be some questioning when she got home.

But it didn't matter. She tugged her hooded cloak (still unaware that they were unbearably out of fashion) closer about her shoulders and clutched the soft package she was carrying. He was supp- oh. There he was, sitting on the beach. Galleai smiled feeling strangely self-conscious and went over to meet her friend, sinking onto the blanket next to him and setting her package down beside her. "Hello Rook."

Rook smiled as he turned his head to look at Galleai " Hi, I'm glad you made it." Rook would have been at a loss as what to do if the girl hadn't shown up. Any time he got to see Gall was special to him but today was a holiday type special like Christmas and having been unable to see her then Rook had been determined to spend this holiday with his dream friend.

" Did you know, it's the moon that makes the tide go in and out?" He asked. It was a random piece of trivia he had picked up at school the other day. His teacher enjoyed telling his students interesting things at the end of the day to keep them from watching the clock as they waited to leave.

The crimson eyed boy found it fascinating that something so far away as the moon had the strength to make the water here on Gaia move. He wondered if it was something like the moon that made him feel so strange these days.

Shaking her head, Galleai looked out over the water. "I didn't know that." She turned her gaze upwards to the moon. "Strange how something that looks so small is so powerful. The coven can't come out during the day, you know. Only at night." She gave Rook a little smile. "I brought something for you." Gal said almost shyly.

Rook wondered if maybe the sun had a magic power that kept the coven unable to leave their house? Gall didn't talk about her family much even when asked so Rook had simply stopped asking. he grinned at gall's nervous confession " I got you something too" That was the whole point of this right? to exchange gifts becuase they cared about each other. " Did you want to give yours first?" It didn't ultimately matter to Rook the order in which presents were given.

Blushing faintly, a pink tinge coloring her cheeks, Gal handed him the awkwardly wrapped package. "Here. I made it myself." She'd found herself being forced to learn how to sew and making Rook a little heart-shaped patchwork pillow had seemed appropriate somehow. The fabrics were varied but one side was all blue and purple and white and the other side was done in reds and oranges and golds. "To help you dream." She added with a little smile.

Rook blinked in surprise and gently ran his fingers over the fabric of the pillow. He wasn't sure how it was supposed to help him dream but he trusted his friends opinion. " Thank you it's very beautiful" the colours suited them he thought and it made Rook smile, although he was somewhat amused by the traditional valentines shape of the pillow he could see the care the other had put into making it. " I'm sure it will bring me great dreams"

"Well, it will give you a pretty place to rest your head." She responded with a smile.

Rook nodded, that it would.

Now it was time for his gift, aside from wanting to show Galleai what sunrise on the water looked like Rook had also made her a present though his wasn't nearly as elegant. He handed over a package containing a Cd " I made you a song, it's only drums but it's original.. I think" There was a lot of music out in the world that used drums and the boy hadn't heard all of it. Either way he hadn't intentionally copied any beats his songs might resemble.

Galleai clutched the cd tightly, smiling. There was a song on the little silver disc? A song Rook made? "Thank you." She said, leaning towards him and giving him a soft kiss on the cheek. She's have to ask Leeward later how to get the music off the disc.

Rook blushed a little, he was slowly starting to learn that kissing was a weird thing. Not that he minded horribly when Galleai did it just that it made him confused a little. " You're welcome I hope you'll like it." Someday maybe Rook would learn to play more instruments and he could make her a proper song, although it would have to be without words because the grey skinned boy found singing was not something he did well at least not yet, plus it made his throat feel funny.

" I brought sandwiches and juice boxes if you want some" he offered. Sandwiches having been made by his mother becuase she was better at getting the fillings just the right amount and cutting them in half the best. She was less than thrilled that he was out all night at the beach but she'd sent him with a cellphone in case there was trouble.

Rook liked that, that even though he was young his mother had a great deal of trust in his maturity whatever that was. Rook just thought he was calmer than his sister and thus in trouble less often.

She never really remembered that she was hungry until someone offered her food. Then, invariably, Galleai tended to be ravenous. Nodding her head, she took one of the sandwiches. "Thank you, it looks great." Biting into it, she chewed enthusiastically. "Mmmm..." She said around her mouthful.

" My mother made it" Rook admitted " I'll tell her you like it though " Someday he'd learn how to make good sandwiches and able to measure out any filling just by eye as his mother did. It sort of amazed the boy that she always got it just right and she never used any measuring tools.

His crimson eyes turned once more to watch the receding tide as he carefully chewed he own sandwich. This was nice and Rook was calmer in Gall's presence, her being around still didn't make the strange tugging sensation that pulled at him disappear but he was able to think about other things.

Gal herself felt calmer in his presence as well. She was able to forget the demands of the coven for a few hours, or at least push them to the back of her mind where they made less noise. Things at home were getting stranger and stranger and she was just glad to be away for a little while. She smiled and tipped her head back, staring up at the stars. "You should play your drums for me."

" Sure I think they'll sound nice out here by the water." For all that he could be mature and wise from time to time, Rook was still very much a kid a young boy, eager to please and to show off his talents. He still delighted in playing and having fun when given the chance. The grey skinned boy shifted how he was sitting and placed the trio of bongo drums in front of him. Slowly he began a tribal beat that stirred his blood and would have mad him jump and dance were he not busy playing. As the moon reflected off the jewels embedded in his skin and the waves crashed against the shore Rook played an ancient tune.
