✿ ❀ Isis could appreciate Jay's insistence that he didn't do what he didn't want to do. He certainly seemed the type, but she couldn't help making sure, and if Jay really did want her to go on ahead, then she wouldn't deny his request. "Well I don't know about that..." She chuckled as Jay insisted they'd have more to talk about. You never really knew until you met a person. Just because this guy was interested in contests didn't mean he was open to talking about them. For all they knew, Trey might've been more interested in Jay. He was a lot more interesting than she was, at least in Isis' opinion.
Isis shook her head softly. Hadn't they just talked yesterday about how she needed to stop doing this? Baby steps.... Didn't she have to sell herself and her credibility to others when she was headhunting for interviews? She had to make them believe she was someone good at her job, someone important. Maybe she could do the same for herself. She was Isis Nikon after all, photographer and journalist for Coordinator Culture, one of the top coordinating magazines in the world, and she was part of it. She won a race around the world, had seven consecutive badges under her belt. She was very interesting, and had a lot to offer. So did Jay, but she needed to stop comparing herself to other people. She was always going to find other people more interesting than herself because she was modest and she had been through her experiences already, so to her they felt less exciting and new, but they were to some other people, like Shenaiya.
Isis relaxed and felt a little better. Maybe she could do this after all... Jay felt a smile tug at him some. Leave him to his breakfast? He supposed she was probably done after all.... and then he wouldn't have to worry about him holding her up. But for some reason, that wording made him smlie a bit. "Sounds good. Keep 'n touch. 'N don' forget 'bout all that stuff we talked about," he added, scooping up some more food. His way of encouraging her to keep it up, and stay optimistic, essentially. He wasn't too good at that stuff, though. He listened to her leave, pausing a moment, before going back to his food. A while after Isis had left, Jay was left alone with his pokemon, his breakfast finished. He kept an arm resting on the table, his hand holding his fork, which he turned slowly between his fingers, tapping against his empty plate. He... really needed some more direction. He had Koda's request to go to Mt. Pyre, and they'd head there next, but after that? He had no idea. He could train, sure. He could catch pokemon, okay. Go battle gyms, maybe let Crystal try some contests, but.... there wasn't a whole lot of passion behind what he was doing. He was very much.... coasting along.

The telepathically conveyed the message. It says: That’s good, congratulations. Yes, I have. I took on one recently, it was… okay. I haven’t no. Why? Have you? Hopefully you all are staying safe. Jay had to take a minute to remember what they'd even been talking about, before he was able to come up with a reply, mentally reiterating it to Ralward, who typed it out. At this point, it was more reflex, but at the same time, Jay was able to quickly switch gears, and reach into his bag. "Crystal, c'mere," he instructed, waiting patiently for the skeptical squirtle to approach. "Here." He offered out a TM. "S'surf. It's a beauty move, ain't it? 'N ah need yew ta help us get across ta Mt. Pyre, so...." It was a win win, but he still wasn't surprised by the very long delay he received from the pokemon. Not that he was one hundred percent sure she even could get them across, but..... it was worth at least preparing for it.

With ghosts lingering near him and oft hovering over his shoulder as they were, the little specter was hardly anything new for Zero. Certainly, he wasn't used to a human ghost, least of all one which actively inhabited his own body, but it wasn't something that would fill him with fear the same way it did the photorgrapher. "Yeah, it was... a recent development. They only just revealed themselves while I was recovering earlier." Given the nature of things, and especially how the evening progressed, it wasn't as if he had time to divulge the details, but it seemed that would hardly matter.
Before they knew it, their time at the ball had reached its conclusion. The bell was about to toll, so to speak, and after everything that happened Zero found his presence to be... vestigial. He intended to say something, suggest they conclude their evening elsewhere, perhaps even discuss what the plan was going forward. But the couple before him got onto the topic of something more romantic.
He held his tongue when Leon mentioned a dance, feeling there was hardly anything to be said, yet Isis wasn't content to leave it at that. She insisted they could still squeeze one in and have the whole room to themselves. It pulled at something while he stood there, once again sidelined, and brought a quiet sigh out as his shoulders dropped. "Hey, Isis," he pulled her aside before she could go off to talk to the band, Nova hovering over the shoulder that wasn't occupied by a ghost. "I think I'm gonna go ahead on out. Seems you don't need me around for... this sort of thing anymore, so I'd rather not be..."

"...The third wheel." He glanced briefly at Hazel, the specter appearing as if seated on his shoulder. He didn't acknowledge the interjection, even if she could be heard. "I'm heading back to Lilycove. Enjoy your night." He stepped back and away from the pair, almost bumping into Nova before she reached out to him. Disappearing in the blink of an eye, they exited the Winter Gala.
When the young man opened his eyes, he found himself back in the places he was familiar with. A cool wind, the sea's breeze potent in the air, and the moon of a cloudless night shining down on Lilycove City. He was home, again, for what comfort it brought. Still tired from the day spent in the ruins, Nova retreated to her ball as soon as they rematerialized, too worn out to get angry or fuss over the dead person attached to him. That left her trainer alone with his thoughts, and the ghost he named Hazel.

He didn't respond for a few moments, but eventually answered when he started towards the door to his home. "No." The young man disappeared into the house once he unlocked the door, and spent some time changing out of his suit. It wasn't exactly the thing suited for travel, so he decided it best to simply tuck it away in his closet before heading back out, to wait. Just as he always had. Just like he always will. Even when it does nothing but hurt him.

Leon disposed of the ice that he had been using on his right hand as Isis went to ask the band for a song so that they could have a dance before leaving. Ren wasn't too far away, the ninetales starting to lament that the amount of people to admire him was dwindling. Leon hardly even paid mind to Zero as he excused himself - it was rather awkward to even acknowledge the other at this time, to be honest. The nicely dressed lifeguard moved off to the empty ballroom floor with Isis, enjoying a dance with her. Unfortunately, even thought he had enjoyed every second of the dance, the song came to an end and they had to leave. Leon ended the dance by placing a gentle kiss on her lips, holding her close. But now that it was time to go..."Where to now, princess?" he asked her. It wasn't like he had anywhere specific he needed to go at the time. ---
It turned out that they would end up being sent off to Lilycove in Hoenn. And since his suit wasn't a rental, Leon was still wearing his suit. He looked around after arriving; he hadn't been to hoenn before. In fact, he had actually had a rather limited experience outside of the Johto region. Back at the beginning of his journey, he had explored a bit of Sinnoh to catch Tesla, been to a few fairs, but other than that... Kai seemed to appreciate the warmer climate, sniffing the air before letting out a relaxed growl. Ren stood close by to Leon, golden eyes squinting a bit as he observed his new surroundings. It smelled rather familiar... Wait... Ren looked over towards the contest hall, ears perked. He recognized this place.

She could understand, the ball was wrapping up, there was no real need for him to stick around only to watch her and Leon dance, especially when it was probably painful for him. And yet..... Isis couldn't help but let out a quiet and disappointed ”Oh...." She didn't know what she expected, honestly. Dancing with Zero after Leon was not an option in more ways than one, and yet...... "O-okay! Thanks.... It was fun while it lasted. I'll see you around?" Isis attempted another smile that didn't quite reach her eyes before moving to the band.
She tried hard not to let Zero's awkward and pregnant departure affect her, for Leon's sake and her own, but she felt.... Heavier. This wasn't going to be easy. None of it had ever been. She had made her choice, but it seemed she still couldn't quite let Zero go. She still wanted to be friends at least, but..... Was that even possible now? She wanted to go out and do fun things, but she couldn't go with Zero without Leon, or vice versa. All she was doing was hurting them both.

She enjoyed dancing with Leon, but.... The situation still weighed on her mind, try as she might to not let it affect her. Then, when Leon kissed her at the end, all she felt was guilt. Leon could probably sense it in her, that she was struggling, but he was still so gentle and understanding. It only made Isis feel worse, knowing she didn't deserve it. He had every right to be angry with her, to feel hurt, and yet.....

Isis knew the answer in her heart, but she didn't want to say it. ”Heh.... I don't know...." She lied. Well.... Partially. She wanted to go chasing after Zero again, to apologize, but she really didn't know what was next. She just wanted to do something about this, and knowing she couldn't was making her feel as helpless as when she'd lost Ebony. ”I suppose we should go to Hoenn. I do need to train for my last badge, and.... I suppose I'm feeling a bit homesick." Isis suggested. It was settled then, since Leon had yet to travel to Hoenn himself and needed to do some training as well. How they ended up deciding on Lillycove anyways, Isis wasn't sure. Maybe her subconscious was continuing to push her in that direction despite the fact that part of her knew she shouldn't go.

Grinning, Isis texted a quick explanation of the ball to Fynx before handing the communicator off to her lucario, who gave Isis a dubious look. "You're smiling like the cat that ate the canary, and I don't like it. What in the world did you do?" He looked at the communicator and grew a bit paler than usual, which was saying something considering his fur color. "Isis!" Atona snapped. ”Whaaaaat? I took a picture! Sue me." Isis shrugged with an impish grin. Atona glared at her and moved to deal with the problem himself.

Isis wasn't sure what else she expected. However, this time she didn't appear to be reacting to Mt. Pyre, for once. Instead, she was looking every which way, her fur bristled, but that was precisely what was so unnerving. "They're everywhere.... What madness is this?" Isis tensed. ”Are you serious?!" Isis tensed, looking around herself. Now that she thought about it, she'd assumed Lillycove was just more crowded than usual, but looking again, a lot of the spectators—people and pokemon alike—were looking more spectral than spectator. Isis gulped. ”Are they dangerous though....?" Raja took a moment and then relaxed. "No.... It seems.... Today is simply a holy day. Arceus has allowed the planes of existence to be blurred so that the departed are given a chance to reunite with their earthly loved ones." Isis blinked. ”I.... See. So the spirits of both people and pokemon are returning for a brief time....?" Raja nodded, and Isis looked.... Hopeful, but concerned. There were so many spirits here. Maybe..... While he waited for Isis to make her way to Lilycove, inform him about a change of plans, or for... something to happen, Zero found himself wandering the town under the moonlight. He passed by the contest hall while it was closed for the night, momentarily reminded of the performances that took place within its walls. Then he drifted towards the lighthouse, and the meuseum on the opposite sides of town. He went to and fro, feeling a cool air settle around him as he wandered aimlessly. A spectator would've had a difficult time making him out amongs the transparent specters that began to appear, like he was swallowed up by the crowd.
But of course, the dead did not bother him. He passed by them like they were old landmarks, and said nothing to the small ghosts of young pokemon following behind him. He reckognized a few faces, those worn down and softened from time just as well as those who were as sharp and fierce as the day they died. Seeing so many of the spirits, human and beast alike, traveling as if they yet lived brought a bit of awe to Hazel, who remained perched on his shoulder.

Her voice reverberated through Zero, something that eased some of his tension and let his shoulders drop ever so slightly. "The dead don't often come out like this. But they're always here." He stretched out a hand as he walked, letting it pass through the ethereal image of the specters too weak to fully manifest on either side. "Even if these guys aren't, there's always a few floating around, those unable to move forward. It's hard to tell sometimes which ones know you're here though. A few act like they're frozen in the moment."

The young man shot his gaze towards the strange spirit perched on his shoulder, only to catch a glimpse of her false feet ascend past his view. The cold spots she made when moving almost felt like a real person was climbing atop him, scurrying up his hair to take a perch on the top of his head. He let out a sigh, and looked out towards the sea. "No. Not like me."
His aching feet finally landed on the spot where he would settle down, after tracing a rock path from the shore to reach a large stone. It gave him a good view of the ocean and the creatures which flowed into the shallows, as dead pokemon still swam through the waters as if they never left them. He even spotted the deep, crimson orbs on either side of a blue shell poking out onto the surface, the dent left where a stone struck its cerulean owner still visible despite being transparent.

It took him a few minutes to realize that they didn't seem malicious. Which was a good thing. Isis already knew (or thought she knew) that Ebony likely resented her for getting her killed, the fact that the reptilian pokemon wasn't here now was probably only further proof of that fact. Still, at the very least, if Ebony really did feel that way, she wished the pokemon would still find her, if nothing else to take her rightful vengeance. ”Do you.... While it was good to hear that this city wasn't normally inhabited by so many spirits wandering about, it still didn't exactly explain what was going on. Even as Isis explained what Raja had said about it, he still felt confused. What odd timing. At least Isis didn't seem spooked. However, she did seem kind of concerned. It admittedly took Leon a moment to realize what could possibly be going through Isis' mind as he listened to her banter with Raja. Oh. Of course she'd be hoping to see Ebony. The lifeguard rubbed the back of his neck, not sure how to best deal with the situation. It was a very sensitive matter to him, as well. After all, he had possibly been one of the last to actually be touching her alive. And his first aid turned out to not be enough but - Atona interrupted Leon's thoughts with a mental nudge.
He shook off his own thoughts to stand closer to Isis, scratching the back of his head. However, as he did so, a chill washed over him - did a spirit just pass right through him? Leon winced at his own words and the reaction it had caused. He placed a hand over hers as she touched his arm. "There just wasn't ever a good time to mention it. There's never a good time for that..." he replied to Isis' soft demand. The lifeguard shook his head as Isis started to blame herself, but before he could open his mouth to object, Atona stepped in instead. "He is right." Leon sighed afterwards, shifting to put a comforting arm around Isis, pulling her close. ✿ ❀ Isis could understand Leon not wanting to bring this up. He was right, there wasn't really a good time for it. You didn't just talk about that sort of thing for fear of opening old wounds. Still, Isis didn't want Leon to go blaming himself for something that wasn't his fault. She supposed that she also shouldn't go blaming herself either, but if she wasn't at fault, and Ebony really didn't blame her, then she didn't know why Ebony wasn't appearing now to see her. Leon took the time to answer Raja's question, which honestly, Isis was thankful for because she really didn't feel up to explaining.
Raja was still a bit confused though. She wasn't sure what a ball had to do with killing a pokemon, until some of the other spirits informed her that Leon was referring to a ball like an event to dance at rather than a sphere to play with. "She saved my life more than once during our partnership... I guess we had to run out of luck some time." Isis sighed. "We'd been battling some possessed pokemon, and Ebony took a hit from a xerneas' dazzling gleam. She was part dark type, so it was super effective, and knocked her out in one hit... I was going to return her, but we kept getting flung into the air, and she was protecting us from the debris flying around in the storm, and...." Somehow Raja could picture the scene Isis was describing quite vividly, getting flashes of broken glass and wood flying around in a stormy whirlwind as rain poured down through the broken roof of what was once a respectable looking mansion. She could feel the fear and concern for Isis' safety as she and Zero had been picked up in the storm and tossed aside, blinding pain in self-sacrifice to protect them. Where were these memories coming from? "I...." Raja hesitated, looking confused.
Before she could think much more on the subject though, the visage of a young girl cautiously approached the group. "Isis....?" Isis looked up and saw the spectral brunette that had called out to her. "Natalia...?" It couldn't be... She had seen Natalia alive and well as she'd chased her through Azalea Town not just.... Wait... A year ago.... Or had it been two? Isis couldn't remember. Time moved like a blur lately. Still, if Natalia was here in this form, then that meant... "N-natalia... No.... Don't tell me..." Isis asked, tears welling up in her eyes as she reached out to her friend and taking Natalia's wisp-like like hands in hers. "Please don't cry... I don't deserve your tears... I'm so sorry Isis... It's better this way..." Natalia insisted soothingly. "What do you mean??? You were my best friend, I searched for you for so long when you disappeared, I feared the worst, and then I finally found you, and you ran off again, and now...." Isis cried. "I know... I've been a terrible friend. There's too much to explain here and now I don't have a lot of time before I'll have to leave this plane, but I just wanted to tell you how sorry I am, for everything." Natalia said sadly. "Wait, please! What happened to you???" Natalia hesitated and sighed. "After we had our encounter in Azalea... There was a tanabata festival that Aiden and I went to. When the festival was coming to a close, we were ambushed on three island, and I died protecting him." Isis gasped lightly in shock and sadness. It was a terrible fate, and Isis didn't understand why Natalia and Aiden would be attacked.
She had been there at the tanabata and heard nothing about an ambush, or a murder... She couldn't believe something like that would go completely unnoticed. "Believe me when I say that I always wanted to mend our friendship. It was just.... Difficult, for me to find a way to do that. Now I suppose it's a bit too late for me, but.... I'm happy just knowing that I saved Aiden. His life is more valuable than mine. Just... Do me a favor and check up on him for me, would you?" A few tears fell from Natalia's translucent cheeks. "I don't want him to do anything reckless or stupid for my sake, you know? He's just that type of idiot...." She laughed sadly. Isis laughed a bit as well through her tears. "Y-yeah... I will... I still have his number from the ball..." Isis promised. Still, her heart sank at the sight of Natalia's broken smile. "Tell him I.... Ah... Well... I'm not really sorry. I guess I just wish we could have traveled together more.... Thank you Isis...." Natalia smiled a pained and tearful smile, but she did seem.... Content. She had accepted this fate, and Isis could do nothing but watch as Natalia eventually faded away into nothing.
For a moment, Isis stared at the place where Natalia's spirit had been, then looked to Atona with determined eyes. "Isis...." Atona said reproachfully. She wasn't seriously considering....? "We have to save her." Atona grimaced. Of course she was. ”Don't even try to talk me out of this one." Atona sighed. "Isis please.... You know that we can't just tamper with these things freely. There will always be consequences."”Consequences worse than Natalia getting killed?!" Isis snarled. "Perhaps, yes. We don't know! What if Aiden is killed instead? You saw how she was. She was only content with her death because she'd saved him. If the roles were reversed, Natalia wouldn't be able to live with herself, and they'd both end up dead, or worse!"”Then we go back and try again!""No. Absolutely not. I've been down this road Isis, and I'm telling you, don't do this to yourself." Atona begged.

Atona's blinked in shock, not quite processing Isis' question. "W...What...?" Atona asked hesitantly. ”You said it yourself. You've been down this road. You tampered with the past to save me. So, was I worth it?" Atona hesitated, ears flattening as he looked to the grass beneath their feet, unable to meet her gaze. "...Of course you were." Atona said quietly. He saw where Isis was going with this. Really, he couldn't argue. When it came to saving Ebony, he had reasons and experience to back up the fact that it wouldn't work, but this... This, he couldn't argue.
Raja was rather confused watching the two bicker. She was lost, given that she had not been a part of the events they were referencing. "So... What exactly is being discussed here?" She asked tentatively when the argument seemed to have found a lull. ”We're going to save Natalia." Isis stated with finality. ”I'm done watching my friends get hurt and being able to do nothing about it! This time I'm doing something, dammit, and no one is going to stop me." Atona sighed and patted Isis' shoulder. ”Easy there, tiger. You might have convinced me to let this one go, but I'm not the one you have to convince." Atona pointed out.

Isis frowned. Atona had a point. Hinata might have been Isis' pokemon, but she wasn't really Isis' to command. Hinata was still just as free as the spirit of the forest, wild and untamed. If the guardian didn't consent to the travel, then there was nothing Isis could do. She turned to Leon with a frown. ”Let's go find a more secluded spot to talk to Hinata." Isis insisted, though she also hesitated, taking Leon's hand in hers. ”I can't do this alone... Can you... Please come with me?" She needed him, at least for moral support, someone to keep her head straight and help her listen to reason if she really needed it. ✿ ❀

Leon wasn't very comfortable with having brought up that topic again, having even winced after the delivery. Even just mentioning the event was enough to remind him of how irritating and devastating the ball had been, and that wasn't even including the fact of Ebony's fatal injuries. "It was just one big disaster. The only good things to come of it was a very small handful of people I met." he commented as he had thought of it, sighing. Unfortunately, there had been so many ignorant people there, as well.

Kai stood by like an attentive dog, while Ren was still standing with his tails in the air, not wanting them to touch the ground and also avoiding any passing spirits. Leon scratched his head as Isis talked to this ghost Natalia, letting them chat without intrusion. It was a heavy topic that he didn't really have anything to say to, anyways.
By the time Natalia's ghost faded away, Leon was already anticipating what Isis was going to try to do. "Isis...I don't like where this is going..." he commented, but it seemed Atona took over on arguing her about playing with time to save Natalia. It wasn't really that he didn't want her to be able to save her friend but more that he strongly believed that time wasn't a thing that should be messed with. He let the Lucario verbally combat Isis on the matter, rubbing his face in his left hand by the end of it. And then, of course, she was asking for him to accompany her on the mission she was set out to do. "You know I'm uncomfortable with the idea of messing with time... But I'm here for you, so let's go. I just hope my hair doesn't get any grayer or anything...." He replied far too honestly, prepared to go find a secluded spot with Isis, his hand squeezing hers firmly.
