With nothing else to cure his boredom for the time being he was left with his own thoughts. Not usually a bad thing considering his thoughts were mainly about the past. Memories he could easily bring up as though they were happening in real time. The one he settled on today, however, was a conversation he’d had with his mother. She’d asked him if he had given any thought to what he might like to do in the future. She had her hunting skills and his father was good with beasts. He enjoyed hunting with his mother from time to time, as did his brothers, and spending time with his dad and the ranch animals was fun as well. Huaijiu himself didn’t see him doing either of those on his own though.
Those activities were more in need of prompting to get him to do them. Something he did with family to create bonding. But they weren’t something he wanted to do long term on his own. He wanted those activities reserved for family time.
So that left him with the huge question of what it was that he wanted to do for himself. What path did he see himself taking. Huaijiu really wanted to get that right. What was the point in picking something and spending all the time to learn it only to change ones mind later or to discover that it wasn’t what was really in their heart? No, he wanted to be sure before he declared what it was he’d be doing.
Jiu sat and thought. His family had plenty of beast tamers so that was not something he wanted. Not that he didn’t enjoy them, it just didn’t call to him. HIs mother was good with hunting and they were never in need of more meat for the family. They had a few fighters in the family as well. Also some magic users. Huaijiu wanted to be useful but also purposeful. So what did that leave?
He contemplated that question for a long time. His time spent sitting on the side of his bed staring at the floor as if the answer might appear scrawled across the wood. It took him over an hour before his mind had finished going in circles to come back to the beasts that were tamed and raised on the family ranch. He might not want to tame them but he did like spending time with them. Perhaps he could make use of that? There were instances of people using beasts in battle as well as for other normal day to day things. If his dad or grandpa could tame one then he could ride one.
Jiu smiled faintly in the privacy of his shared room. A rider. He’d make use of his family’s talents and build upon them with his own.

It had been days since he’d come to the conclusion that he wanted to be a rider. Of course he wasn’t sure where to start on that. He knew he needed a beast to trust as his mount but there were so many to choose from. So that eventually led Huaijiu to the conclusion that he needed to do research into which one would be the best fit for him. Since he was in Matori he knew those would be the easiest to get his hands on. Possibly even something from Oba. But if he wanted to have the full picture he wanted to know about all the mounts of Tendaji. So what better way to be educated than to read up on the subject? Jiu had gone and borrowed books about the beasts. His family had enough of them that he didn’t need to purchase any or even go to the library.
So the boy stacked the books on his bed and sat down to get to work. Hour after hour he spent studying each beast and what the had to offer as far as being a mount. He also had concerns about temperament and how they would be as a companion. Jiu wanted to have the strongest bond he could get so that he’d never have to worry about the animal wandering off and not coming back, or turning against him when he needed them the most.
When he was done with one book he set it aside and grabbed the next one on the pile. Each one was specific to a certain region of Tendaji. So he learned about the beasts in each territory. Matori first, Oba next, then Tale and so on. He was three books in now and had yet to find one that stood out to him. Though the more he read the more he was thinking that he would not have an ‘Ah Ha’ moment like others did. He would need to make a very educated selection. Not that that was a bad thing in his opinion. It could even make things easier for him in the long run. He would know all he needed to about the beast and go from there. Though he did want to meet the beast before selecting it to be his companion. That first bond was important.
After several more hours passed by his neck began to hurt and he could feel his muscles starting to cramp. Too long he had been hunched over the books and reading. So he thought a break would be best. Moving the books to the side of his bed he got up and leaned back to loosen the muscles by his spine. Huaijiu decided that a few hours out in the sun and by the beach would be the best remedy for sore, cramped muscles. So he made sure the books weren’t going to fall off his bed before he headed out of his room. The spot he had in mind wasn’t too far from the ranch so he didn’t bother packing a snack. He could walk back in no time if he got hungry.

Since he had the intention of gaining a mount, Huaijiu wanted to be sure he knew the trails he’d be using to build trust with said beast. So that meant that he needed to be out and about walking those trails and learning every inch of them that he could. His goal was to know exactly which way the tail turned and when. What landmarks there were to let him know what was coming up and if possible, fix anything he deemed as too unsafe for a beginner. That meant that branches laying in the middle of the trail were removed. Low hanging branches that might slap him in the face were cut down. And things that otherwise blocked his view around a bend needed to be moved.
Of course that took time. So he had to really take it slow so that he knew what he was doing. Cutting took effort. His arm grew sore and tired from the constant back and forth motion but eventually the lower branches were taken down and no longer posed a threat to his face or head. Anything in the way on the ground was moved to the side. And Jiu even took the time to make sure the trail was even, which meant mud holes were filled in and packed down.
“That should do.” He said to himself in a lowered tone.
He put his hands on his hips as he looked down the trail at his handy work. Jiu had yet to gain his mount but when he did he wanted everything to be in place and ready to go. So he’d remained busy for the past few days. He knew his brothers were curious about what he was doing and where he’d be slipping off to but he wasn’t yet ready to tell them what decision he’d made. He’d save that for the day he brought the beast home to show them.

While there were many beautiful creatures on the ranch to pick from he wasn’t so sure he wanted one of those. So he’d talked, yes he’d used words, his dad into taking him to the market to see what was available as far as mounts went. Granted he’d been told that the Matori market would likely only have beasts from Matori and possibly Oba to choose from. Jiu had understood this but still wanted to take a look. It wouldn’t hurt to see what there was. Who knew, maybe he’d find the one he wanted while he was down there.
It was a private trip with just him and his dad so it hadn’t been filled with needless chatter from his siblings. Although he had to admit that sometimes their talking was comforting. During the trip, however, he’d been grateful to be left to his own thoughts without having to pay attention to his brothers’ banter. He never did like for it to seem like he was ignoring them.
Huaijiu had gotten to see many animals at the pens. Not that he was really impressed by them. After all, he’d been raised on the ranch and he’d seen more than his fair share of beasts. Heck, he’d even helped tame a few. And feeding was part of the daily routine. So he knew quite a bit about their care already.
After spending a few hours there they had returned empty handed. Not because nothing had caught his eye but because he’d told his dad he wanted to think on it. After all, it was a big decision to make. His mount would be with him for many years to come. It would be the one beast above all others that he would trust with his life. So he wanted to go over all the information he had in his mind on each one to make the right choice. To him, that was the only thing that made sense. It wouldn’t do to make an impulsive decision and regret it later. And changing a mount later on would set him back in bonding and make things harder.
So once he’d gotten home Jiu went right to his shared room and dug out the books he’d collected on beasts. He wanted to flip to certain pages and compare the information to others. He was going to do his due diligence on this.
