“Come here Llyr, let’s see what you’ve got.” The voice of the man in front of him was deep.

Llyr had sought him out because he was good with hand to hand fighting. Something that he wanted to learn. Something he wanted to be good at. Not because he wanted to go around knocking heads, but because he had two siblings that would need protecting. He’d been a shy kid when he was younger, well, at least quiet, but that was slowly changing.

“Yes, sir.” He replied as he moved over a few steps and got within range of the man he was hoping to call his teacher.

“Alright boy, now put your hands up. I want to see your form.” The man looked at him, sizing him up and watching for places that needed improvement.

Llyr did as he was told and brought his hands up. His hands created fists and he pulled his elbows in close to his sides. His eyes locked onto the man’s face as he stood there. Awkwardly.

“Is that how you keep your feet?” The question slipped out.

At first he didn’t understand and he moved so that he could look down at his feet. What was wrong with them? As he bent to look down he felt a hand on his shoulder that promptly shoved him and made him stumble to the side. Llyr went partially wide eyed as he regained his balance and snapped his gaze up at the man.

“What was that for!?” He shouted.

The man seemed amused. “That’s what you get for keeping your feet so close together.” He responded to Llyr’s outrage.

Color quickly spread across his nose and cheeks as realization dawned on him. He meekly nodded his head and moved to be back where he was. Once again he put his hands up, tucked in his elbows and this time moved his feet so that his base wasn’t so small. When that was done he looked at the man again, this time to see if there was something else he was forgetting.

“Better.” The old Matorian nodded his head and gave a grin. “Quick learner. I like that.” He moved his own foot to tap the inside of one of Llyr’s feet, moving it just a little. “Keep one facing forward, the other to the side. You should also have it slightly back.” As he instructed he adjusted so that the boy would understand both the words and the physical position.

Llyr looked down at his feet again, this time looking at how they were moved and then nodded. “Yes, sir.” If he was going to become a Berserker and be good at fighting, defending, then he needed to learn all of this and more. An idea that he was totally fine with.

“So does that mean you’ll be my teacher?” He took the chance to peek up at the man and see if there was an unspoken yes on his face.

The man laughed, a deep and hearty sound. “To the point ain’t ya boy?” One hand went to his gut as he chuckled a bit more and shook his head. “Ah. I don’t see why not. I can teach you the basics at least.” There was a firm nod of his head once the laughing was done.

“Just the basics?” Llyr seemed a bit deflated by that news.

“Aye, because once you have that down you’ll figure out which way you want to go. There’s different ways to fighting.” The man explained as best as he could. “If you want to do it the same as me then I can continue to teach you. If not… then we’ll find you someone that better suits your style.” Even if the boy didn’t follow him he could at least be decent enough to help him find someone who would help out.

Llyr grinned at him then. “Thanks, that means a lot.” So he had a teacher now! That meant he was on his way to being able to defend his siblings and anyone else he wanted!

▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ ✧✧✧ Learning the truth
Solo - Prentice - WC - 608( 2pts )

His world came to a halt. Suddenly and without warning. Llyr was told that his father was gone. Lost at sea or something. And with him his little sister. Skeena. It was bad enough that he’d lost his dad but to know that his sibling was gone too? It made him feel like a crap big brother. How could he claim to be a protective brother if he couldn’t even keep his sister safe.

In his anger at the world and grief at losing two people most important to him, Llyr had left. He’d shaken his head and denied what he heard. There was no way he would lose them. No way they could be gone. He had a plan to find them. He had to. Not just for himself but for his brother, Moriko, and his mother. Until he got them back he wouldn’t allow himself to cry. There would be no breaking down. He couldn’t. Llyr had to be the rock for the family. He couldn’t, wouldn’t let them see him break.

As he stood by the crashing waves of the sea he felt his anger rise. Anger for the ocean itself. Anger at the boat his dad and sister were in. Anger at his dad for going out in a boat in the first place. Llyr looked down at the ground and searched around for something to throw. He found a shell and picked it up without even thinking. It was in his hand one second then being flung out at the water with as much strength as he could muster. “Ahhhh!!” He hadn’t been planning on screaming but it felt right. As he let the shell fly he let his voice join it. Still no tears, he was saving those. He refused to let them out. Not now.

The shell hit the water with a PLUNK and there was a splash. It was a small satisfaction but it was enough to make him feel somewhat validated with his anger. So he looked around for another one. Llyr found one and picked it up quickly so that he could send it flying as well. “Ahh!” He screamed again. Over and over he did that until his arm got tired and his voice hurt.

Finally he fell over onto the wet sand. Breathing in and out quickly he stared at the waves. No matter how much he threw things at them they kept coming. He brought his knees up, one after the other, then draped his arms over them so that he could hang his head. He felt so drained but at the same time the anger was still there. He could feel it settling in the pit of his stomach like a rock. It wasn’t going to be easy to get rid of. He would simply have to carry it around with him.

After a few minutes to collect himself and gain his breath again, Llyr got to his feet and looked around. He knew he needed to go look for his dad and his sister. He knew he’d need a boat. But not something small and fragile like the one his dad had used. No he’d need a ship. And ships were found in ports. There weren’t any major ones in Matori but there were in Oba. Llyr turned to face that direction and stared off into the distance. It looked like he was going to be off to Oba now. He needed to get a job on a ship and hopefully convince the captain to take him up the matorian coast. If he could find the shipwreck then he could find his family.

▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ ✧✧✧ Getting On Board
Solo - Prentice - WC - 1548( 5pts )

It had taken some time of being introduced around before Gael helped him to find someone that was willing to take him on. Since he had no prior experience or anything of the like it was hard to convince them. Of course Llyr was thankful that they did none-the-less. He had bid goodbye to Gael then joined Jephry on the ship as indicated.

“Alright kid, so Gael tells me that you want to go toward Belrae with specific interest in the Matorian coast line.” Jephry narrowed his eyes at the young boy and clucked his tongue slightly. “Interestingly enough that just so happens to be the route we’re taking. There is a small port town we’ll be stopping at in Matori, there is some cargo there that didn’t make it down here in time.” Normally they wouldn’t waste their time but the captain wanted that cargo specifically so that was now the plan of action to be taken.

“That works out wonderfully for me, sir.” Llyr didn’t argue about stopping in another port. Gael had already warned him that he wouldn’t always get his way and acting like a spoiled brat was a sure way to get himself thrown off the ship without anyone caring about his actual goals. “Do you know where I’ll be staying and what my job will be?” He wanted to know the place he was supposed sleep as well as what tasks he would be in charge of doing.

“You’ll be bunking with the crew of course. Private rooms are reserved for passengers. You’ll have to make do with a hammock, boy.” Jephry wasn’t sorry that the kid would have to rough it. Even if Gael had brought him he could see that the kid was somewhat spoiled and that wouldn’t help him on the sea at all. “As for what you’ll be doing. Looks like we’ll be putting you to work cleaning. Anything that needs cleaning will be left to you. ‘Cept the kitchen. That’s Marsel’s domain. He’s picky about how his stuff is cleaned and stored.” Jephry thought it made more work for the man but if Marsel wanted to be that controlling of it then it was up to him to be so.

“I’m not the best at cleaning, sir, but I will do my best.” Llyr hadn’t really been all that great at cleaning when his mother had made him do it. Although he had been horrible mostly on purpose so that she would get frustrated and end up doing it herself and telling him to simply go play or something. He couldn’t do that now. Llyr would need to be good at his job to prevent the crew and captain from deciding he was useless and tossing him off the ship the next time they made port.

“Yeah, you’ll learn. Cleaning isn’t that hard. Just made sure the deck is cleaned and clutter free. We can’t do our jobs if we’re tripping over things.” Jephry grunted. “If we need it done a certain way we’ll tell ya.”

Llyr nodded his head at that. Keeping things tidy he could do and if there was a way to do something specific then he could learn. “Alright. That sounds like something I can easily do.”

“I would hope so.” The man shook his head then turned on his heel with a wave of his hand. “Come on, I’ll show ya to the crew’s quarters.” They would need to go below deck but it wasn’t too bad. They had a decent stairway since they did take passengers sometimes. He kept to one side of the hall as he went so that anyone who needed to could walk past since he was giving a tour of sorts. Jephry paused by the doors in the hall and pointed. “First one’s the captains. The other ones are for the passengers. Back this way..” He motioned for Llyr to follow again.

Thankfully he knew when to be quiet and simply follow along. He looked at the first door and noticed the name burned into the door. It wouldn’t be hard to figure out where the captain was if he needed to get him for something. The other doors were unmarked, save for numbers on the doors, and they weren’t all that interesting. When he was told to follow along once more he hurried his steps some to get caught up but seemed to be completely attentive to where they were going.

“Alright, so this here is the galley, kitchen is attached by the side door.” He motioned to the open doorway that led to a room with a large table and chairs. “Meals are served three times a day at regular times. Usually six, noon, and seven.” Of course Marcel could change the times if he felt like it but the man was good at keeping to his schedule.

“If we miss a meal?” Llyr was curious. He wasn’t an early riser so breakfast might be a tough one to get to.

“You’d have to talk to Marcel about getting food then. He might be nice and give you a snack if not then you have to wait.” Jephry shrugged his shoulders slightly. Wasn’t his problem. He always showed up on time and he wasn’t the cook so he didn’t need to worry about what the crew ate or didn’t eat. He also wasn’t the keeper to anyone on the crew, not even this boy.

“Right..” That didn’t seem all that promising.

“Then down the stairs again is where the crew sleeps and the cargo is held.” He motioned for the boy to follow along again.

They went down the stairs and into the belly of the ship. It was a lot darker than the first level had been, even with the lamps. It took a second for Llyr’s eyes to adjust. If he had to go back and forth between the levels too often then he would have a definite issue with his eyesight. He might even trip and fall over. He’d need to have a way to keep from falling over. Perhaps if he closed his eyes as he went down the steps then it wouldn’t be such a dramatic change? It was worth a try.

“So here in the front room is where we sleep. Hammocks, cots and the like.” He motioned around at everything. Jephry had himself a cot in the front corner. It was nice to be able to just walk in and drop onto his bed instead of having to navigate the whole room and risk stepping on or tripping over someone. “Most of the veterans have places in the front, newbies are in the back. There are a few hammocks open back there but you’ll have to pick tonight when the whole crew is here so you know which ones are available.” Best not to pick someone’s sleeping place now and fight over it later on. Things could get a bit tense when sleeping places were messed with.

“Okay..” He couldn’t argue with that. Llyr was the newest member so he obviously would have the last claim to where he slept.

“That door back there leads to the cargo and its off limits unless we send you after something. That just keeps sticky fingers out of things.” Jephry didn’t see the boy really doing any stealing but it needed to be said anyways. The captain would want to be sure that the warning was given in case an incident was to pop up later on during the voyage. “Door is usually locked tight anyways so there’s no real risk to anything coming up missing.” Captain liked to keep temptation off the table.

“I don’t have any interest in the cargo so that’s not an issue for me.” Llyr figured he might just throw that out there anyways. “When do I get started on working?”

“We’ll take you around and introduce you to everyone first. That way the crew knows you’re no stow away.” That would cut down on the risk of the boy being tossed overboard later on or at the least brought to the captain for no reason what so ever other than just being on board the ship. “Come on. I’ll take ya. I think everyone should be on the ship or at least on the dock right now.” Which meant he wouldn’t need to track anyone down or worry about it all. “You already met the captain so we don’t need to worry about that.”

“Oh right.. wouldn’t want them to think I was here without permission.” Llyr didn’t think he could take on some of the men that were on board. They looked like they had more muscle in one arm than he had in his entire body. Heck some of them looked like they could easily be three times his weight. “I don’t need to worry about being beaten do I?” Just how safe was this crew?

Jephry laughed as he led the way back up to the deck. “No boy, none of us are that rowdy. At least not anymore. Most of us are just old and set in our ways. Tend to get grouchy when things are done the way we like. You’ll do fine once they know you’re one of us.”

▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ ✧✧✧ Some things to send out
Solo - Prentice - WC 444 ( 1pt )

After getting the perfect gift for his mother he left the market so that he could head on down to the post. He needed to get all his gifts sent out before he got back on the ship. And that was a tight schedule. If he wasn’t on the ship when it left the docks then he’d be stranded in Yael. Since his end goal was to go to Belrea then he certainly didn’t want to waste too much time. Still, he figured he would have enough time to get his gifts and packages sent out.

So he found himself standing in line waiting to send off several items. By the time it was his turn the person working behind the counter looked like they were already done with their day.

“Can I help you?” Came their clipped question.

“Oh uh, yeah. I need to send these to my mother in Matori.” He nodded his head and looked down at everything in his arms. He had quite a few things to send off. But if he could put them all together then it wouldn’t be too much of a hassle. And they would all arrive the same time rather than one here and a few days later another one.

“Alright. Are they going together or delayed shipping?” The person asked with little interest.

“Uh.. together.” He wasn’t even sure what delayed shipping was for. Why would he want to wait to send something off? If that were the case then he could just send it from Belrea on his own.

“Okay. Put them on the counter and I’ll get the wrapping and twine.” The person moved away from him and the counter to collect the things they would need to get the job done.

Unsure of what else to do, Llyr followed directions and put all his stuff on the counter. He made sure they all stayed in the same relative area so nothing rolled away or dropped off the counter. When the person came back the laid out a large piece of brown wrapping that seemed rather thick then started to move his stuff onto it in an expert way. They were making it into a neat pile that would more easily be wrapped.

In all it took the man a minute tops and things were wrapped and tied and ready to go. An address was scribbled onto it with a name; his mother’s name. After being told the total he nodded and paid, then walked out with a smile on his face knowing that his stuff would reach his mother by the time, if not before, he stepped foot on Belrean soil.

▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ ✧✧✧ Setting Sail
Solo - Prentice - WC 558 ( 1pts )

After getting his things all packed together and ready to be sent out with the next post, Llyr had made his way back to the ship. He needed to be on it for when they set sail and he knew that he still had a few hours but he didn’t want to push his luck. There was someone that waited til the last second to get back on but he wasn’t that person. Llyr thought it was just his luck that he would do that and come back to find the ship had left ahead of schedule. No thank you.

So he headed back to the ship and said short greetings to those that were there. He waved at the captain to show he was present then headed down to where his sleeping spot was. He was still in the common area with the rest of the crew. Not that he minded. It made sure he was never alone with his thoughts and that kept him from spiraling. Llyr still worried about his sister. He wanted to know that she was safe. Taken care of. And most importantly; alive. Of course to know that he had to find her.

When he reached his spot he laid down, the hammock he managed to snag for himself swaying with his added weight. The gentle lull of the ocean beneath the ship making him rock slowly. For a long time he just lay there and stared up at the ceiling. Llyr honestly wasn’t sure how long it was but he could feel the desperation creeping up on him. The need to get up and do something. Not that he was really sure what all he could do. If he didn’t know where Skeena was then he couldn’t exactly go to her and bring her home. He forced a sigh out and closed his eyes.

He wasn’t sure how long he had his eyes closed for but it must have been a few hours. Llyr wasn’t sure if he slept or not since his mind hadn’t shut up once. But the sound of the captain calling for the crew brought him back and he opened his eyes. It was time to get going and he needed to get to work.

So he got up and made his way to the upper deck rather than staying down below. Once he was up there he heard the orders being shouted. It was time to cast off and things needed doing. Llyr quickly fell in and grabbed rope to help with the rigging. He knew the routine and was able to complete it with a mindless attitude. By now it was reflex to tie the knots just right and make sure the rope was tight.

As he worked he thought about the fact that he was heading toward his next goal. He’d check the docks in Belrea and make sure no one matching his sister’s description was there. He’d check the shores, the islands around, incoming ships, heck he’d even check orphanages if he had to. Anywhere he could think of that a little girl might have popped up. Granted he wasn’t that old himself so they might eye him a bit weird. But surely they didn’t have people that would match his sister in uniqueness so it should be easy enough to find her.

(( Llyr is continuing his journey to Belrea so that he can find his missing sister. ))
