Missing Gems
Kaimi was sitting on the floor of his room, starring at the collection of various glittering stones that were laid out before him. He'd arranged them by color first, then each color was sorted by size, everything meticulously arranged and after he'd gotten everything set up just so he was certain of what he'd suspected all along, he had less gems then he should. The gems that he was slowly collecting were meant to pay for a home for himself once he was old enough to move out. He knew full well that Moke really didn't want him here and to be honest he didn't want to be here. His plan was to use the gems to get himself a place of his own, a place that he could set up a base of operations for his future salvage team. That was his plan but now he was further behind because some gems had gone missing.
Well they weren't exactly missing, were they? It wasn't as though gems could just get up and walk away on their own, meaning that they had been taken. Only one person would be able to take them since only one person knew where he kept them... it was Moke. His brother was stealing from him, wasn't he? Grumbling a bit he offered up a prayer to Al'kano that his brother get a swift kick in the backside for doing such a thing before he set to gathering up the jewels, putting them back in the bag that he kept them in. He was going to have to find a new place to put them, wasn't he? Not only would he need to find a new place to put them but it was going to have to be a hidden place. He wasn't about to allow Moke to profit from all of his hard work after all, especially when he was being so sneaky about it! Did he think Kaimi so stupid that he didn't think he'd notice the loss of gems?
Giving a shake of his head Kaimi started to swim around in his room, checking it over, trying to decide upon a good spot to hide his bag of gems. It really was a tough decision that he had to make. He could hide it among some of the other things that he'd collected but that would only take a bit of sifting around for Moke to find them. He could put them under his bed, among his clothing, or even tucked away in another room but that held the same problem. While he was away on a new salvage job his brother could just look around and find the bag of gems so that he could pilfer more of them for... well, whatever it was that he was wanting to steal them for. Given that he wasn't as driven as Kaimi it could just be sheer laziness on Moke's part. He could just be taking them so that he wouldn't have to work as hard and still be able to enjoy himself with his friends. A thought that caused Kaimi to grind his teeth for a frustrated moment.
Under the floor boards. It was like a strike of inspiration that told him that he cold pull up one of the floor boards in his room and tuck the bag within. Bag in hand he set to swimming around along the floor, hand sliding against the wood, as he sought out one of the boards that looked weaker then the rest. He just needed a spot where he would be able to pull it up easily and without causing too much noise. As though guided by Palaau's hand he found exactly what he was looking for within a short amount of time. One of the boards was a touch more loose then the rest and he was able to pull it up with a bit of effort. Underneath there was enough room that he was able to fit the bag easily and with room to spare, meaning the hiding spot would be able to hold future finds as well. Giving a little nod of his head he put the bag of gems within, replaced the board, and pulled a basket of shells to sit partly over it so as not to draw suspicious to the new hiding spot that his gems would rest in.
With that done he offered up a prayer to Palaau, "Please, help me to keep the bag safe. It's the means by which I am going to find a home of my own one day so I can't let Moke just steal from me." He murmured to the God, hoping that he would hear the prayer before he swam around his room, gathering up everything that he would need for his next excursion. He had to get out there, get to work, and make up for the gems that had been taken from him. That meant finding new gems to replace those lost as well as more gems that would put him ahead of where he'd been before Moke had robbed him. If nothing else at least his useless brother was trying to be subtle about it and hadn't taken everything at once. Instead the man had only taken a couple of gems at a time in hopes that Kaimi wouldn't noticed.
Apparently he had no idea how much Kaimi wanted to move out though or else he'd know that Kaimi knew exactly what he had collected to this point. He knew the number by heart in fact, meaning that Moke wouldn't have had a chance at robbing him as he had. Not without Kaimi realizing it at least... but at least he had figured it out and sooner then later. It allowed him to find a good spot to hide the gems so as to secure his future, a future that didn't involve a thieving brother or so he hoped.
After one last glance around the room, making sure that everything was in place, Kaimi left his room. He made a little circle around the house, making sure that Moke wasn't home at the moment. He didn't see him, meaning that he was out somewhere, likely with those friends of his. Most of them were pretty well as bad as Moke was, save for one of them... but Kaimi refused to think too long about that one. Sure, the guy was handsome, but he obviously had horrible taste in people since he was hanging out with Moke of all people. Not to mention that thinking about things like that was just a giant waste of his time.
It was time to get back to work, not time to think about some silly crush he had. Crushing on one of his idiot brother's equal as idiotic friends wasn't going to help him get ahead in life. The only thing that would was going to be hard work on Kaimi's part and a whole lot of it, starting right now. It would be a long day since he had to make up for the lost gems but so long as he worked hard he should be able to get back to where he had been before the theft or so he hoped.

A Giant Mess
It was many hours after he'd headed out that Kaimi returned home to a bit of a commotion going on inside. He could hear a few familiar voices, those of Moke and his friends, and he was quick to swim over to one of the windows of the house, peeking within. He could see them arguing in a rather heated manner, about... gems? Of course it was about gems. Did that mean that Moke had gone to take a few more of them only to find them missing? He would assume so or else his older brother wouldn't be as angry as he was now. That meant that the hiding spot was one that was working. He offered up a prayer to Palaau before he swam around the house, peeking in the window to his room, taking in the mess within.
It seemed that the room had been torn apart when his brother wasn't able to find his gems so easily, meaning he dropped all pretenses of being sneaky about it. He gave a shake of his head before he slipped into his room, swimming forward to push his door closed, locking it from within, and then laid his ear against the door. He listened in closely and with the help of the water he was able to hear it, his brother's voice as he complained about Kaimi being a 'traitor' and 'selfish' when it came to the stash of gems... as though they were meant for anyone that wanted to come through and take a few of them. If you asked Kaimi it was his brother who was being selfish in this instance.
Next he could hear some of the others trying to calm Moke, telling him that he could just wait for Kaimi to get home and he could ask him about the missing gems then. It might be something that could calm Moke down but it actually had Kaimi's temper flaring just a bit. They wanted him to wait until Kaimi got home so... what? He could demand that Kaimi hand over the fruits of all of his hard work? He was out there working his fingers to the bone, digging into the earth with bare hands, and by the blessings of Uukai did he find the gems... and they wanted him to just give them over to Moke? What had his brother ever done for him? Sure he was allowed to stay in his house but not without Moke letting him know every day how grateful he should feel about it. As though he were some sort of patron saint of mercy... The man was a theif! He stole from a child and he wanted Kaimi to feel bad about it? As though he ever would!
Swimming over to the hiding spot he opened it up, putting the twn new gems that he'd obtained today into it, before closing it up again. He wasn't going to let his brother mug him when he came inside the front door, which Kaimi was certain that he'd try to do. He'd lie, tell him that he found nothing today, and he wouldn't let him know where he'd hidden the other gems no matter what he said or did. The man was lazy and a coward, he would try to intimidate Kaimi, but all that would do would be to cement in Kaimi's mind the fact that he wanted to move out, which meant keeping the gems safe from his Moke. It meant that things between them would be even more tense but in the end, when he finally moved out, it would be worth it.
Glancing around his now messy room he gave a grumbling sound. It was such a mess in here, everything he'd salvaged was scattered around the room, and it meant that he was going to have to clean it all up again. His older brother was an idiot thinking that all of the things that he'd scattered held no value. In fact it was just the opposite, the rest of the stuff that he'd had stacked up was worth a good deal, though only if one put the effort in. Kaimi had found that there were many who enjoyed a nice shell necklace if it was put together in a really pretty, fancy manner. A shell and pearl necklace could fetch a decent price but Moke wouldn't think about that, would he? Moke always accused the Kaha'iko of being lazy but he was even more so when it came down to it Kaimi thought to himself.
Sighing a bit he set about gathering up the shells, putting the still pristine ones into the basket and set the now shattered ones aside. He'd have to think of a different way to use the broken ones he supposed, not willing to just throw them away. They still retained their pretty, rainbow colors on the inside after all. Mother of pearl was a beautiful material and broken or not he wasn't about to waste it. The shattered shells were given their own basket and the baskets were put back where they had been sitting, protecting the hidden stash of gems, hopefully with the blessings of Palaau to keep them safe. The God of Wood, Warmth, and Protection had been able to keep Moke at bay once, and Kaimi could only hope the blessing continued.
As he worked on the cleaning he heard a light knock on the locked door, something that caused Kaimi to whirl around, starring at the door before he swam over to it, resting his ear against it, "Hello?" It couldn't be Moke, he wouldn't just be knocking, he'd be banging on the door. It was someone else, maybe one of his friends? Who? Why? Here to try to negotiate for Kaimi's gems? He wasn't going to just hand them over to whoever it was though. The gems were his, he'd work hard to get them, and it didn't matter who was out there he wasn't going to just hand them over!
"Hey there, little Kaimi. I kinda figured you might be home." Came a voice through the door, that of Peleke, something that caused Kaimi's heart to flip flop in his chest. Of course his brother would send ahead the one that Kaimi had a silly crush on to be the one to negotiate. It was something that made him want nothing more then to shriek in anger... but he wouldn't allow himself to act in so childish a manner. He had to be strong and mature, more so then those outside of the door to his room. As such he said nothing, just rested with his back against the door that stood between himself and Peleke.
There was a long silence between the two of them and the one on the other side of the door said, "You really got Moke in a tizzy you know. He's talking about how it was a mistake to even take you in... come on, Little Kaimi. How about you come and make up with him? He's no fun at all when he's in this sort of mood." Words that cut deep for Kaimi. It was just as he'd thought, he was here on behalf of Moke, trying to get Kaimi to surrender. Moke really was a cruel man, wasn't he? Using Peleke against Kaimi like some sort of weapon. There was a part of him that wanted to cry but he wouldn't allow it. Even if the water would hide tears perfectly he wasn't going to be so weak as all of that. He was young but he wasn't a weakling, he was strong, he had to be.
"Even if it's you, Peleke, I am not going to give in to Moke. If he wants to throw me out then tell him to do so. I will pack my things and leave." He didn't know if he had enough in the way of savings to do so but if that was the only choice he had then he would just have to make due. Maybe he could find a tiny place to live in? A house that needed fixing up to make it really livable? He would take whatever he could get at his point if his older brother was really going to be this terrible about it. He wasn't about to let him threaten him with throwing him out as a means of getting his hands on Kaimi's gems.
There was another knock on the door and Peleke called through, "Come on, Kaimi... we can talk about this. We are all civilized members of the Menehune after all." A statement that made Kaimi wish that it was easier to throw things under water because he would throw something at the door in hopes of driving off Peleke as the guy was really starting to annoy him now. What had he ever seen in him?! Thinking on it he decided that it was mostly his pretty face... but after this he didn't even think that Peleke's pretty face was going to make up for it. A shame... cause he really had liked him... or at least he'd liked his looks? Deciding that sounded a bit on the shallow side he he offered apologies to Al'kano.
"I need to get to work." He would see about cleaning everything up, getting all organized back into its respective baskets, and then he prepare himself to leave if it came down to that. Tomorrow... tomorrow instead of going digging he would just go around town, seeking different residences that might be for sale, and otherwise check prices. He wanted to do so now but he really couldn't, it was far too late for that, and he didn't want to brother those who might be willing to sell to someone as young as he was. For now he would focus on cleaning and ignoring Peleke... as well as anyone else that his brother might send to try to 'talk sense into him' as it were. As though it would be so easy to win Kaimi's favor now.
What felt like an eternity after Peleke had arrived he finally left the door, telling Kaimi that if he wanted to have dinner with everyone else that he should come out. Dinner... right. He hadn't even considered that. He couldn't very well leave his room now even if it meant skipping dinner! He was tough, he could skip a meal and be fine! He'd just make up for it tomorrow when he was out. He was sure he could do a bit of trading of the things that he had on hand and get himself a big breakfast.
Giving a sharp nod of his head Kaimi continued on with what he was working on. It took some time but the giant mess that his brother had made of his room had been tamed, everything returned to where it belonged, and he was able to lay down. There would be a lot for him to do tomorrow and he would have to be careful while he was out, so as not get waylaid by Moke and all of his idiot friends.

Something's Up
Kaimi was the sort that left home early in the morning, worked all day, and then came home when he was sure that Moke would be out and about with his various buddies. He did his best to avoid the house otherwise lest he risk having to actually deal with his older brother, something that he would do anything to keep from happening. The man was just... lazy, to the point that he wanted to take advantage of Kaimi's hard work. If it weren't for the fact that Kaimi had hatched a good plan to keep the man from finding his stash he would likely have robbed his little brother blind to be able to live larger.
He wasn't really one to brag but the fact that he was smart enough to stay a step ahead of his brother was something he was proud of. Mostly because it meant that he was able to keep his stash safe and along with it his hopes of being able to move out sooner then later. Presently he was trying to figure out how exactly he could go about getting into the house undetected before gathering his things and leaving in the same way. He didn't want to be bothered by his brother after all... though at the same time he wondered if he should suck it up and actually let Moke know? They didn't see eye to eye but there was still a chance of worrying him by just disappearing for an unknown amount of time to a foreign land.
Giving a humming sound he tried to debate on what exactly he wanted to do. He knew that he should be the more mature person and go talk to Moke, let him know that he was going to be away for awhile. It would make the trip a lot more pleasant knowing that there wouldn't be a huge fuss when he returned home. If Moke even noticed he was missing at least he though in a somewhat bitter manner. Shaking his head Kaimi set to mentally scolding himself, not wanting to let such emotions get to him. He was a better person then all of that, there was no reason to let himself get dragged down by darker emotions, especially when he was so close to going on a trip with his new friend. It would be good for him on many levels to hang out with Rewi and not have to worry about anything else.
Kaimi went in through the window that would take him straight into his room, looking around, and was pleased to see that the room wasn't a mess again. It seemed as though his plan was working. From time to time he'd 'hide' a crystal or two in his top drawer, where he knew Moke would easily find it if he tried. It was a way to keep the man from making a mess of his room looking for the crystals that he wanted and made it so that Kaimi didn't have to go about cleaning up after the man every day. He found himself wondering what Moke was going to do with himself once he moved out. Likely be forced to get a real job... which would be interesting to observe.
As he set to work gathering what he needed for his trip before he suddenly heard the sound of voices, those of his brother and Peleke. The two of them were... arguing? Pausing in what he was doing he swam over to the door to his room, peeking out, a confused look on his face. Not too often that the two of them got into it like that since they tended to be pretty calm around each other, with Peleke always being the sort to follow along no matter what Moke might want to do.
Instantly he found himself worried, not really a fan of the idea of the pair getting into it since he didn't want anything to happen to Peleke. At the same time he felt that it wasn't exactly his business, was it? What his brother and Peleke did in their free time was for them to decide and if the two of them parted ways, good. It would be better for Peleke since Kaimi knew the kindly male could do so much better then Moke. Pushing the door open slightly he looked out at the two of them, watching closely, then found himself wondering if that was actually what it was about? Did Peleke finally figure out that Moke wasn't good enough for him? Good for him!
After a moment he came out of the small room that he'd taken over, which was a storage space once upon a time ago, and swam over to where the pair was. He waited for them to pause in their heated words so he could say, "I'm going on a trip to dig for crystals near Pale'iko with a friend. I will be back in a few days." With that he turned to move away from the pair, eager to get out of the room since it felt far to tense for his liking, to the point that he felt he couldn't breath.
The two had glanced his way, seemingly heard his words, but a moment later they were back to arguing so he wasn't sure if it had sunk in or not. No matter, it was fine since he wasn't going to be gone for all that long... and better that he got out of the house so he didn't have to deal with the older pair. Once he was outside he gave a sighing sound of relief, glad to be out of there. He'd try to catch up with Peleke once he got home, to make sure that he was alright, but for now he had to get back to Rewi so they could get going on their trip.
