Monsters? With the recently discovered Yaeli, the land of Tendaji has been abuzz with talk and gossip about their new neighbors. They're odd, they're strange and skittish, their eyes glow - but that can't possibly be true most say - the word on the street is that they're starting to leave their island. Those that had met the Yaeli know that it's an odd thing to hear. They were terrified of the outsiders, why would they leave their safe villages... Rumors are filling the toxic island where the Alkidikes extremists were banished along with the Matron. Rumors of monsters clawing their way out of the earth with oil black skin and glowing evil eyes that are even weirder than the strange monsters that landed upon their shores just one year ago. The Yaeli say that their gaze can steal the soul of any person dumb enough to get too close and they're vicious beings trying to take their children. These rumors have reached the main land as well, mostly through the few Yaeli that have decided they would rather face the scary but similar earthling races than to have to find out what the terrifying monsters want with them and their land. Is there any truth to these rumors or are the Yaelian's seeing things? There was a lot of talk in town about the Yaelians and anything surrounding them. That’s all the Obans talked about now a days, the odd people coming from Yaeli. Solari had only seen a single one of them so far and she had not been afraid like most but rather curious. Of course not in the sense that some of the Obans were, but Obans would be Obans and they were just… Argh. She didn’t even want to think about some of the things she’d heard people saying, she knew they would never change and that was a sad fact. If only they could see past their me me me attitude.
She could see why some of the Obans wanted to recruit the Yaelians though. They were practically afraid of their own shadow. Solari found that sad but had no pity for them. They had decided to come upon their shores so they dealt with their own slew of new problems. At least though they were really interesting to look at. Black crystals and glowing eyes, the eyes were probably her favorite part of the Yaelians. So different than any other Earthlings, kind of like the Matori and their ears. Other might find them creepy but she found them particularly awesome.
It did make Solari wonder however, how such a skittsh people could leave their home to come to a foreign land full or foreign and scary people. Some people were talking about that too and the question itself was a head scratcher. If given the choice Solari would never have left Matori, well if she’d been born in Matori to begin with. Her mother had already been pregnant when she had been enslaved and as such Soalri was born in the capitol where she did not belong. She was going to rectify that soon however with her trip.
Now when the rumors of monsters started to surface, Solari scoffed it off. Monsters coming out of the earth? Really? Stealing souls? No, Solari did not believe in any of these things. The Yaelians were already weird enough and she had heard that Yaeli was a toxic place, what if they were all hallucinating? Seeing things because they were afraid of those living on the mainland? Maybe they were even trying to scare off the mainlanders from going over there. It would scare some of them off, but it certainly wouldn’t stop everyone from crossing the sea.
Though she had heard from an Oban who had apparently crossed over that he had seen the beast himself. If anyone was to ask Solari though she was sure he’d been drunk since everyone kept saying the monsters stole your soul. How come he was alive? Maybe once she’d been in Matori for a few years she’d cross over there and go check it out herself. She’d be stronger than now; much more capable on her own, she was sure she’d manage to cross. These kinds of rumors needed to be verified in person and she’d be able to see what Yaeli really looked like. That was another thing Solari didn’t quite understand. Everyone was returning with different versions of what they saw. The Banished Alkidikes weren’t running back to the mainland crying about so called monsters, so why were others? It was all very intriguing if anyone asked her and definitely worth taking a look by herself. Perhaps there would be more Yaelians in Matori and she could get the answer straight from the source. Even if that sources wasn’t all too reliable since they’d actually left their home to cross. None the less it was worth investigating, at least to Solari.
For now though, she presumed anything that came out of someone’s mouth about Yaeli was a lie. She didn’t want to have to think about monsters that can steal your soul with a single gaze or any other fantasy rumor that people brought back. She would listen and keep it in mind but she was sure as heck going to go over there and check it out herself when she could. It wasn’t like someone could simply just cross over, she wasn’t too keen on all the work required to actually get there. If she could find some large merchant ship then she’d be ready to go. No more day dreaming for now though, Solari put the Yaeli and anything related to them at the back of her mind. When the time came she would find out the truth for herself.

Fast hands
“Solari get up! It’s already the afternoon!”
“Hnnnnnng!”
“Solari it’s your fathers birthday, get up!”
“Alright alright mother.” Solari groaned and rolled in bed to face her mother and waved her away. The woman huffed and left finally. She’d completely forgotten that it was her father’s birthday today and she had nothing to get him. Groaning again, Solari finally got out of bed and began to dress. It was supposed to be her day off, a day where she stayed in bed all day and simply laid there doing nothing or sleeping the day away. It didn’t look like her mother was going to let her do that however.
After dressing, Solari went down into the house moving towards the kitchen. Her mother was busy preparing the food for tonight’s small birthday party, when she spotted Solari she threw her a fruit as well as a glare before getting back to work. That woman was never happy. Before her mother could give her any chores, Solari had gone out of the house and taken a bite of the fruit. Her father didn’t like many things and what he did like she could not afford, so she was going to get him the next best thing.
So herbs it was, that Solari could afford some of. She wanted to get him the very special kind. She headed to the market first, finding the vendor with the rare stuff and visiting his booth.
“What have you got for me today Gerld?” Soalri placed her hands behind her back and smiled at the vendor.
“Long time no see Solari, how’s the business doing?” He man went digging under the counter for his best stuff.
“Good good, papa’s birthday today. I thought I’d get him something special. Shopping around, you know.”
“Well I’ve got a treat for you.” Placing the rare flower he’d put in a jar, the merchant slid it forward a tiny bit. “Rare and straight from the far far end of Zena. Only blooms once a year and very hard to find. Also very pricy.”
“Oh yea?” Solari went to grab the jar but the merchant slide it back towards him.
“Ah ah ah, not touching.”
“What? Why not? I want to see it.”
“Because I said no touching.” Solari rolled her eyes and stared at the flower.
“I don’t think I can afford that Gerld, or at least let me think on it.” The merchant shrugged and immediately put it under the counter again.
“I might not be there later on, better make up your mind soon.”
“Yea yea. I’ll be back.” Solari waved at him and left the booth.
If Gerld thought she was gonna buy his flower he had a new thing coming! Solari made her way to the merchant, finding three flowers that resembled in shape the one he’d shown her and ought those at a cheap price. Then Solari returned home, grabbing her mother’s clothing dying and getting to work on recreating the flower. The flower itself had been a blood orange color with black polka dots and a red interior. The flowers she had picked had the perfect shape but their colors were off which was where the dye came in, she needed to test.
The first flower came out good, but the colors weren’t right and this Solari knew. The second flower she did was right on target but she’d messed up by accidently ripping one of the petals off. The third one however was perfect. She’d been careful when brushing on the dyes and drying it to perfection. With the coloring done Solari went back to the kitchen and stole a jar similar to the one the merchant had used but not exactly the same size. Ah well, at this point there was nothing she could do, the sun was already down and she’d have to be back home soon.
Solari got to work. She went to the now emptying market place where merchants were locking their thigs up. Her flower man had already locked up and Soalri went in but bent down behind the other closed merchant stalls as she made her way to the one stall. The thing was locked up pretty well so Solari got out her tool kit. She wasn’t the best at locks and the damn thing was causing her more trouble than needed. At least by now everyone had gone home but with the light in the sky diminishing every second Solari could feel her frustrations starting to get the better of her.
“Looks like you need a hand.” Came a whispering voice from behind and Solari nearly jumped out of her skin.
“What?” She hissed at him.
“Need a hand?” He grinned at her.
“For what?”
“To open that thing?” Solari stared at the guy, what in the world? She didn’t have time though, so she nodded and moved out of the way. The man got closer and began working on the lock; he unlocked it and moved out of the way for her. Solari took out her flower in the jar and made the exchange before putting the real flower into the bag.
“That’s a pretty good replica; no wonder your lock picking skills need work.”
“Whatever.” Solari locked it back up and began leaving but he grabbed onto her arm to stop her.
“Feeling a little grateful maybe?”
“Thanks for helping me steal the damn flower, now let me go.”
“Look, I don’t mind helping out a fellow thief but you need to learn a thing or two.” He handed her a piece of paper. “If you’re ever looking for more of your kind, I think we could use someone like you. You’re good, but we can help you get better.” He nodded, smiled at her and withdrew into the shadows.
Solari looked at the piece of paper he’d handed her. It only had the name of a not so favorable bar. She stuffed the paper into her pocket before disappearing into the shadows herself. She needed to get her real flower to her father, perhaps she’d looked into this bar later.

Become useful Solari stared at the paper she’d placed in the middle of her desk. It was used and slightly ripped now from Sol playing with it in her pocket. It was late now and she’d handed over the flower without anyone asking any questions. Sometimes she wondered if they did know that she was stealing but didn’t say a word about it. Ah well, as long as they didn’t say anything about it then she couldn’t complain. She didn’t think her family would out her anyways, but she knew that a small part of them would probably be a little relieved once she left the home.
Perhaps this was a good opportunity, but again, did she really feel like going out at this time of night? The guy hadn’t specified a time either, so by default he probably wanted to meet her tonight. Solari sighed heavily, she really didn’t want to. She really didn’t have to get out of from the warmth of her home or get dressed or have to sulk around in the darkness or meet this random stranger in some weird tavern for a job. Was it worth all the hassle I she did end up getting a job?
Eh, maybe.
Sighing heavily, Solari grabbed the card off the table to pocket it and then her light weight cape. Did she have anything else worth doing tonight? Nope, so she was going to head out. The Matorian slipped out from her room and then out of the house as quietly as possible. It wasn’t like there was anyone up at this time but it was still better to be careful. She was curious to see what this guy was going to be offering her, unless he wanted a date. Solari made a face she sure hoped that wasn’t why he’d called her out.
The bar type place wasn’t in a bad spot of town but nor was it one of the best, the exterior looked like it had been running for a while. It didn’t make it any more inviting for her, Solari made a face. She still didn’t want to go in, but she’d dragged herself all the way over here now and her curiosity was getting the better of her. If she didn’t go in all this work would have been for nothing and she would have wasted far too much precious time. No at this point she had no choice but to go in.
Pushing the door open, Solari stepped through and looked around until she spotted the waving hand from that same guy. Solari made her way over and noticed a few people giving her looks. There were all kinds of people here, not just Obans or Matori, still she still didn’t feel overly safe by all the faces. Still, she made it to the table without incident and took a seat. There were there other people excluding her friend who all gave her a small smile as she settled down in the chair.
“Well about time you showed up! I was just about to hand out the test.”
“The test?” Solari narrowed one eye at him. “I didn’t sign up for any kinds of test.”
“Well, someone has to test your skills don’t you think?”
“If I would have known I would have stayed home,” Solari said in conclusion leaning back on her chair and crossing her arms. Tests weren’t exactly her idea of fun.
“Alright grumpy pants. I’m Danos, and this is Friei, Lorek, and Armina. Everyone this is Solari. They’ll be your companions for the evening.” Not anyone Solari would have hung out with if given the chance. She sighed.
“So tonight test is your usual stuff, breaking and entering, steal something valuable and make it out without getting caught. I don’t think I can put things any simpler. You’re all more than welcomed to work together or go out on your own. I expect all of you back in 2 hours. Questions?” Danos glanced around the table, no one answered. “Alright good, off you go now.”
The other three got up and left with Solari following behind them. They stopped outside of the bar and gathered together.
“I think we should stick together, makes it easier.” They all agreed, Soalri groaned. “And I think we should all hit one house, make it easy for everyone. I think I might know an empty place.” Once again everyone else was in agreement and all the Matorian could do was node her head and follow the rest of them as they lead the way. Not that she would have lead the way anyways, too much work being a leader and you had to take decisions and that was just too difficult. If they were happy to make the decisions for her than who was she to refuse them right?
They made their way towards one of the large homes of the nobles, and Solari watched in amazement as one buy one each scaled the tall wall leading into the back yard. Armina paused as she got to the top of the wall and looked down at the wall.
“Aren’t you coming?” she said.
“I can’t climb.” Why did they have to climb the wall?
“What do you mean you can’t climb?” she hissed, “You should have told us earlier!”
“Well no one asked!”
“Oh for the love of… Go around I’ll go open the gate for you.”
Solari sighed and began to walk around the property towards the front where the closed gate was. She shouldn’t have come; this was far too much of a bother and definitely not worth the effort. But again, it was too late for her to change her mind. As long as no one was home, everything would be just fine. Solari made it to the gate and waited for Armina to open it for her. The others were all waiting on her on the other side and shaking their head at her.
“Can’t believe you can’t climb and you call yourself a thief.” Friei said shaking his head before the group made their way inside. Once inside, they all paused. “Alright house is empty, everyone go find your own something and be back in tops five minutes.” Everyone went running off into the darkness except for Solari. She was not about to go out exploring the house when she could just grab whatever from where she was standing. So, she turned and spotted what looked like a small golden statue. Perfect, that was exactly what she was going to bring back. She grabbed it and was returning to her spot when she heard voices.
Solari never reacted so quickly, she took off in the direction Armina had and found her just as she was pocketing a necklace.
“Owners are home,” she said while half pushing her out of the room. “We need to go.”
“Alright, alright. Out of the window.”
“What about the others?” Was Armina crazy? They wouldn’t make it out the window.
“The others can take care of themselves, hurry up. Jump!” Armina jumped out of the window leaving Solari in the room. “Hurry!” She called out as quietly as possible. Oh this was not good. Not good at all.
There was no choice, someone was approaching. Solari threw herself out of the window and landed on her back and without grace. Her breath escaped her and pain shot up her back but Armina was picking her up and trying to drag her along. They managed to make it back to the entrance and out of the gate before anyone caught them. As they made their way back towards the bar the two boys ended up catching up with them. They couldn’t wait to see what everyone had collected from their little stint.
Back inside, Danos waved them over with a smile.
“Alright, let’s see what you got.” Everyone dropped their items and Danos’s smile grew larger as he laid eyes on all the items, that was until they landed on Solari’s status.
“What is that?” He said, picking it up. “You grabbed some fake gold statue?” He looked at her. “Look Solari, this can’t even be sold for much…”
“Well I didn’t find anything else…” She said quickly.
“You could have come with me and grabbed some more of the jewelry. There was plenty to go around.” Armina said crossing her arms. “We had to open the front gate for her too, I bet she didn’t even leave the entrance of the house.” She hmphed.
“I thought it was gold.”
“You need to check these things, especially in something like this you should have went straight for the jewelry… I’m really disappointed; I thought you were at least half way decent. I’m sorry but I can’t let you join our little group.”
“What?!” Solari screeched. “I did all of this work and even came here hoping for a job!”
“What work did you do? You didn’t help the others, you didn’t plan. You couldn’t’ even get over the wall which by the way should be like thief basics in case you need to leave in a hurry. You didn’t bother looking for anything of value.” Danos sighed, rubbing the back of his head. “Nope, sorry can’t do it. This was a serious test and you showed no effort or even willingness to work.” He shrugged.
“Whatever!” Solari slapped the table and got up, toppling the chair and left the tavern.
She couldn’t believe them! This was her one opportunity to actually get a job and leave and grow her skills. Solari sighed, he was right though. She hadn’t even bothered trying and now she had missed a great opportunity. The Matori looked up at the sky, this sucked. It really sucked. She felt horrible and knew she should have put more effort into her work. She headed back home and went straight to bed. She couldn’t continue being like this, she couldn’t keep being lazy anymore. She would miss things, important things, and it sucked feeling like this. Being lazy was getting here nowhere, she needed to be an active participant in her life or she was going to miss everything. She was going to go out and see the world. Solari promised herself that from now on she was going to try and work more.
Just a little more.Quote: Solari is a little s**t and needed to learn a lesson. She needed to learn that you don’t make friends by being a non-active participant in the relationship, you only piss off people. She needed to learn that laziness gets you nowhere and that you need to work and put in effort into things you want or else they will never happen. Mostly, she needed to learn that there are consequences to your actions when you are lazy and don’t want to do anything. In this case it was missing a big work opportunity. It also gives her the proper plot motivation she needs to leave her family and see the world.
