Marching on Neued

When the command to charge on a place called Neued was finally issued Saraf had given a muttered curse under his breath, feeling that it was about damn time that they finally made their move. They had wasted more time then he would like to think about in a dirty, savage, back water land, leaving him at least wanting to nothing more more then to just finish it. The sooner that they got this dealt with the sooner he would be able to get back home to a land that was just so much better then this place, not so much more refined. Really the only upside that he could think of when it came to this place was the open space, once they took it their people would be able to be more comfortable and able to spread out a bit.

He doubted that it was going to take long, the lands of the North were filled with a people that had lost the first battle that they'd had with them, proving their weakness and ineptitude. They'd had the combined power of, what was it, the warriors of five other tribes? Despite that combined power of so many tribes and so many soldiers and yet they had still been able to fail? It really was laughable, but they were all lacking in many ways, but he really felt as though the worst thing they had done was for them to put up a falsely 'united front' in their attempt to win. It was supposedly one of those 'rag tag bands of misfits' he'd heard, one of them that was made up of tribes that were normally enemies with one other, so of course they couldn't fight as one against a real army. Especially not against one of them that served a true king, one who should rule over all of the lands that the eye could see and then some. It would come to pass, of that Saraf was certain, it was just a shame that it had taken this long to get to the point of making their move against Neued.

They'd had the momentum the day of their first battle against the 'allied forces of the North', they should have pressed forward, overrun the enemy, and just ended things! They could have easily captured more of them then what few they had taken, and brought them back home with to Oba along with victory! He was more then certain that by chasing down those that they had already defeated, those whose morale was already in the pit, that it could have been so easy... and yet despite that they hadn't. For reasons that he had yet to figure out despite his best attempts he just didn't know why they had stopped when they had doing so well. Instead of being led to a swift a decisive victory against their worthless enemies they had done what? Nothing! They sat around, twiddling their thumbs, letting those idiots rebuild their forces so that they would be ready for the next battle, that was what they had done! He would never understand it, never understand why they were made to wait so painfully long for what Saraf felt was the inevitable conclusion to the war. Not that he felt that it was so much of a war as it was conquest, it was only the 'allied forces' that seemed to think it was a war.

How he would love to say as much to those in charge, to tell them exactly what he thought of them and what he saw to be their poorly executed failure after that first battle. He'd keep his thoughts to himself though, he knew full well that he was still considered a 'prentice' in the eyes of most despite fighting his hardest in invasion of the North. Rank meant everything and he didn't have one yet, as such he couldn't really voice his opinion to anyone but those of similar station. Now if someone were to actually ask him what he thought about what was going on... well, he'd of told them by now and he probably would have gotten a swift kick in the backside for it. It would have been worth it though if it meant getting his simmering anger off his chest. For now he'd follow their orders , Saraf served his king and country after all, he was a zealously loyal member of the Fire Tribe, even if that meant following the orders of those who made bad calls. He meant to rise in rank quickly so that he wouldn't have to follow bumbling fools for much longer then he already had. The sooner they had a good, high ranking officer in their military, men like himself, the better.

Going over to where his long sword was waiting for him, sweeping it up to rest it against his shoulder, he turned to look toward the man that was giving out their new orders. They were going to be taking Neued from the the 'allied forces' and they were going to crush their morale that much more, they were going to see about taking more prisoners, but it seemed that they were to keep the killing to a minimum now. It would be more of a challenge, to keep from killing enemies that wouldn't be of a like mind. It would seem that the others also knew that their victory was all but assured, meaning that anyone they killed was just one less captive that they could make use of later. It was a waste of life for sure, and now he found himself glancing at his sword for a moment before shrugging. Not the best weapon to use when one was trying to capture people alive but he supposed if he used the flat of the blade to strike his enemies then it would probably work out better. He'd be damned if he killed anyone and had the leaders of the army, or worse the King, looking down on him for it! Instead he supposed he'd just have to take a good amount of prisoners himself, feeling that it would help as far as prestige went. Nothing was more important then that, he would make damn sure that he was noticed by the King for only good things so that one day he could serve at the man's side as one of his most loyal soldiers.

The call the battle was sounded and Saraf was quick to fall into step with others, his hands tightening on the hilt of his sword, heart thudding a bit quicker in his chest. He was so excited to go into yet another battle and this time he would be sure to gain the notice of the higher ups no matter what!

After Battle Rewards

The battle to take the village called Neued had gone a lot smoother then even Saraf could have hoped for. It was just, grand, the way that they were able to overwhelm the enemy forces and not only had then been bale to take place but they were able to take captives this time around since that seemed to be more the focus then actual killing had been. It was something that Saraf much preferred himself, not wanting to see useful captives wasted by seeing them skewed on the end of a blade. Most certainly he didn't want for such a thing to happen by his blade. In fact he'd much rather see to it that the prisoners that were taken were taken by his own hands. The more he was able to do as far as fighting smart the more recognition that he would get from the higher ups. He didn't want to brag but he really felt that this was his calling, as if Jonal himself had set him upon this path. What a grand age to have born in, the one that would allow him to see such a war as the one they were currently a part of.

Looking around the village he found himself taking in the way that these particular people lived, the manner in which they built their houses, and the like. It wasn't a terrible place to tell the truth if only because there was a lot more open space to be enjoyed in a place like this. The Fire Tribe would really benefit from being able to take more land, spread out, and be able to stretch their legs a bit. It was at least something that he wanted for his mother and himself, a bigger and better place to call home. It was one of the main things on his mind when he thought of what he would do when he rose in rank, to see his family become more then it was currently seen as. No matter who or what his mother was in the past he didn't care, what mattered now was the present and seeing to it that she was provided for. Sure, she was the parent and normally people would see her as the one who should do said providing but he was the man of the house, it was a task he was only too happy to take on himself.

Started forward he walked over to one of the large trees, leaning against it, and just allowed himself a moment to breath and to relax. He knew that they wouldn't be sitting still long this time from what he gathered, something that he was actually glad for. They would be staying a while, seeing to the wounded, getting a feel for the area, and going from there. There would be patrols around the area as well, to catch any stragglers from the 'allied forces' so that they could be brought back here. Now that was something that he wanted to be a part of, to truly see about getting himself some captives of his own. His hands almost itched for that chance... but for the moment he knew he needed to take a moment for himself. He needed to see about cleaning himself up, tending to his gear, getting something to eat, and maybe a bit of rest. If he was going to go out into the unknown that was the forest of Jauhar he really wanted to be at his best in all ways.

After a moment of thought he decided that the thing he wanted to do most was to get cleaned up. There was a river nearby that he'd seen when the army was marching into Neued, if he went there he could wash himself of the dirt and grime that came from the battle itself as well as all the walking before and after. Getting clean would be a blessing in and of itself, not to mention that he would be able to clean his clothing and his equipment as well. Deciding upon that course of action Saraf pushed away from the tree that he'd been leaning on and walked forward to let others know about his plan, both so that they didn't think he was running away. He was neither a coward or a traitor after all, not one who'd scurry off away from his duties. He'd let them know exactly where he was going so there was no mistake as well as so that they could tag along if they wished to do so. Given that there could still be members of the 'allied forces' skulking about the woods he felt that it was best that he didn't go alone into the forest.

A short time later, after speaking with those in charge, that Saraf, as well as a small group of other armed Fire Tribesman, were headed toward the river so that they could make quick use of it. After making sure the path to the river was a safe one, the water supply was something that they would likely make use of while they were in Neued, everyone seemed to relax just a bit. Saraf gave a back and forth for a moment before starting forward to the edge of the water, shedding his equipment and clothing before wading into the water. It was probably the most amazing feeling in the world, getting the wade chest deep into cool, flowing water, and with the water wash away the filth that he'd managed to accumulate between leaving home and this moment. He sent up a prayer of thanks to Nerad and Essd before he ducked under the water completely, rinsing his upper half and his hair, before emerging up.

"Ahhh, that is too good." Another bonus that came along with taking this place, being able to enjoy such a commodity he thought to himself. He glanced toward his things, knowing that he should go over there and get to work on cleaning that all up just as he was cleaning himself up... but he decided to give it a moment more. Soaking here was just too good, making it so that he didn't want to leave straight away. Soon, but not quite yet, call it his reward for making it this far in once piece. Jonal's blessing upon him, of this Saraf was certain. Giving a smile he went under the water again, deciding that was going to enjoy the river to its fullest before he set to work preparing his equipment for further use in up coming patrols and battles.

Finally Awake

As Saraf finally came to a few things became apparent to him, first was the fact that he was no longer in Tale. The weather was all wrong for Tale, not to mention that the scents and sounds of where he was laying was all wrong. Passed that was the fact that half the world around him seemed rather... dark. Sitting up slowly he lifted a hand to rub it against his right eye for a moment as though to try to clear the darkness that was effecting him. It took him a moment of rubbing before realizing that it wasn't really helping. The sight wasn't coming back in his eye, was it? There was also the bandage that was wrapped around his head, one that was covering a rather painful wound on the side of his head. As he sat there, with his mind racing, trying to figure out exactly what it was that had happened? He found himself struggling though.

What was it that he'd been doing up to this point? Where exactly was he? What had happened to him in Tale? It started to come back to him, though a bit slowly, and in pieces. The first thing to come to him was the run in with the Shifter... No, not just the Shifter, there was more there then just the Shifter. All of those with him, that Zenan woman especially who had taken Lady Naevius hostage. It was his fault, wasn't it? He was the one that had captured her, the one that had brought her back to Neued, and in turn she ended up capturing the Lady. His mind whirled for a moment before he gritted his teeth, hissing a bit between them. That woman with the blue skin, 'his' captive, she'd taken Naevius hostage in turn, demanding that she and her friends be released from Oban rule. What happened then...?

His mind seemed to whirl for a moment more before it clicked, he'd been upset because the others weren't trying to save her, they were just standing there. He had wanted nothing more then to stop the captives, to save Naevius from them, but it didn't help. He'd gone forward to do something... that was when the Shifter got in his way. There was an argument with the guy and then, yeah, the wound. Lifting a hand he touched it to the bandage wrapped around his head. The guy had bashed him in the head with the weapon he carried and that was that, he'd collapsed, the world had gone dark, and here he was. Where was here though, that remained the biggest mystery. He knew that he wasn't Neued any longer, meaning that he was, where? His tired, mixed up mind seemed to be struggling at the moment to really figure it out... that was until he recognized a rather familiar scent coming his way, one that was unique, a light perfume that smelled of honey. It was a cent that caused his eyes to go wide, "Ahh... w-wait...? No, surely not?" He gasped out, shock clear in his tone of voice.

Staggering to his feet off his bed he took a couple steps toward the door, only to find the very person he'd been least expected to appear standing there before him, "M-Mother...?" His mother, so that meant that he was back home? Back in Oba? It was something that caused his eyes to go wide before he started forward toward the finely dressed woman on unsteady feet, "Mother? What is going on? Why am I home?"

The woman, who had been starring at him in a wide eyed way, suddenly burst into tears and rushed forward, wrapping her arms around him, dragging him into a hug, "Saaaaraf! You had mommy so worried! You were hurt while you were fighting and you just wouldn't wake up! I was so scared! I was starting to think you would never wake up again!" She sobbed, clinging to her son who was starring in a rather wide eyed manner at her.

"Mother... I... I'm sorry, I never meant to worry you in this manner." He said instantly, then after a moment asked, "Wait, wouldn't wake up? What do you mean?" He asked of, shocked. He hadn't woken up? Was that why he was back home? Had he been sent here because they were unable to wake him up? He starred a moment at her, then gave a shaky breath, "I see, so they sent me back here? I can't believe this... am I so pathetic as that?" He muttered to himself, displeased with the idea that he had been so weak that he was sent back home? Was he no longer of any use to his people? He had wanted nothing more then to serve his King, to protect his people, and then he was sent home?

"No, no, it's nothing like that my little one." She said, petting Saraf before leading him back over to the bed, getting him to sit down along side him. She lifted a hand to pet his hair once more before giving a smile, "Ah! But this is good, the fact that you have come to! The Healers have been so worried, not sure how far to go with their healing sessions because they didn't want to push you too hard. They wanted to wait until you woke up, to learn about how to you got the wound, before working with you." The woman seemed to hover about her son in a worried manner and she wanted nothing more now then to keep him home with her, "It's alright now, we will get you healed up, you can rest up, and just stay here with me." She told her boy, resting her hand on Saraf's shoulder, pushing him back on the bed, "Now, rest. Mommy will call for the healers, I will make sure to get all of the best healers for you! My little Saraf, you are going to be fine now I promise."

Saraf wanted to refuse, to say that he didn't want to just rest here and do nothing... but he was still too tired. He'd fight her on it later, would try to get back to the battlefield later, but for now he could do nothing more then listen to what she was saying and rest. Giving a bit of a smile he said, "Alright, Mother, I will rest for now... but please, tell those healers, tell them that they need to get here soon and that they need to fix my eye. How will I ever serve our king half blinded?" He gave a sighing sound, his eyes sinking closed, and he slipped into a deep sleep once more.

Searching for the Missing Brothers

It rarely rained in Oba, it was one of those things that just didn't really happen, it wasn't a land made for rain... and yet as he went toward the hospital where Issaly's brother had been staying for treatment it started in. It was as though the Goddesses Essd and Hatald were crying along with Saraf's mother. Not a good sign, was it? If they were shedding tears then he felt as though he wasn't really going to find the missing Shifters. They were likely long gone, having taken advantage of the fact that Saraf was away from home, as well as taking advantage of the fact that they were with his mother.

He didn't want to believe that the pair of them were so devious but the proof was right there in front of him. It just went to show that despite Saraf swallowing his pride and bringing the pair into his home that it was a mistake. Shifters weren't the sort that could be trusted, they were the sort that Saraf had come to dislike the most. Sure, it was a bit of biased, but really, the one that he'd run into was the worst of the worst. How he hoped that one came to suffer in the coming days, he'd pray to all of the Gods and Goddesses for such a thing... later perhaps, instead he had to focus on what he was doing, as well as on what it was that he was going to do next. How was he going to explain it to his mother if he wasn't able to find any clues as to what happened to the Shifter brothers?

She was going to be so heart broken, Saraf just knew it. It seemed as though taking care of the brothers was something she enjoyed, likely because Saraf himself was growing up and out of the house for training a lot. To have someone to take care of, to chat with, to go on walks with, it was something she enjoyed. That the brothers would take advantage of her kind heart in such a manner, it made him want nothing more then to hunt them down that much more. It wasn't that he wanted to find them and bring them home at this point, it was that he wanted to find them, turn them over his knee, and give them the punishment they both deserved. He was certain that it wasn't something his mother would approve of but at this point Saraf really didn't care all that much... though he wouldn't say that out loud. At this point he wouldn't say anything that might upset her that much more.

Upon arriving at the hospital he sought out the doctor that had been working with Isaris to this point. They had paid the man good money to take care of the Shifter's illness, money that Saraf felt his family had been swindled out of now that the brat had run away without even a simple thanks. Saraf walked over to the man, gave him a very serious look, then demanded to know, "You just let them leave? Without even so much as telling my mother that someone was trying to take them away?"

The man seemed to freeze in place, his eyes wide, looking as though he were struggling to find words to explain why he'd let such a thing happen. The fact that the man almost looked as though he was choking on his tongue helped to lighten Saraf's mood even just a fraction. He starred at him for a long moment, waiting for an explanation, and much to his surprise and secret delight the man bowed his head and set to begging him for forgiveness. It seemed as though letting a patient jut vanish on his watch wasn't something that was going over well with the man. Good, let him suffer with his mistake he thought to himself.

"I don't care about your apologies, I want information, when did they leave? Who did they leave with? Which way did they go?" He asked the line of questions of the doctor who did his best to answer, though none of the answers really helped Saraf. They left 'earlier in the evening', it was 'some other Shifter' that they left with, and they 'headed North' he thought. Nothing really to go on save for the fact that apparently other Shifters had taken off with the brothers, which only made his distaste for that particular tribe increase.

So more Shifters just came here, took the two brothers away from the hospital, and just waltzed out? Saraf felt that a big part of it was likely due to the way the war ended. People were still a bit uncertain about how they should act around the other tribes, to the point that the guards would actually go as far as to drag people like Saraf to a trial over presumed slavery. It was all a bit charade, as though they were trying far too hard to keep the savages from the North happy. A silly waste of time, if anything what they should be doing is regrouping, getting themselves in order, and finding their footing again. Losing had shaken them up but it didn't meant that they were going to be down forever, right? Though if they just let the savages wander into their land and do whatever they wanted to do.

"That really doesn't tell me much. I will do what I can with the information though. I know that it's uncertain if it will help me to find them, but I still need to look. If I don't then I feel my mother will cry that much more." He said, giving the doctor a glance, inwardly pleased to see him pale over the idea that his mother was in tears. Good, let him suffer with that fact as well since Saraf himself had to. "I highly doubt it will happen but if they happen to come back, if Isaris's illness acts up perhaps, send word to our place." He doubted such a thing would happen but if it did Saraf would return here and 'deal with' the brothers.

After giving the doctor one last, hard look, he turned on his heel and headed out of the hospital. He would do some rounds see if he could find any clues, and if he found any he'd follow them. For his mother he would do all that he could, wanting to help to cheer her up if at all possible, even if it meant chasing after a pair of ungrateful Shifters in the rain.

The Perzi

As Saraf came through the door after a some training time with the other soldiers he found himself face to face with a squinting perzi, something that had him halting in his tracks, his eyes going wide. Silence seemed to drag on for a moment before the cat was withdrawn from his face and he saw his mother standing there, smiling at him, hugging the feline in her arms. She gave a smile as she scratch the cat under the chin before she said, "Cute, isn't he? He's from a very prestigious blood line, his mother was quite lovely!" She smiled, pressing a kiss to the little feline's nose.

The young man starred down at rather smug looking cat for a long moment, then sighed, "Did you really need a cat?" He asked, starring at the cat, wondering if they needed a cat skulking about the house, making a mess. He wasn't sure that it was something that they should be spending money on, not when felines weren't exactly the most useful creatures. They didn't listen to orders, they laid about, and made messes. It was such a pain he thought to himself as he stepped inside, closing the door behind himself, before he took off his boots. He didn't want to track dirt into the house since he would hear about it from his mother, something that made him feel like a youngling all over again.

There was a soft chuckle from Emi before she stepped closer, pressing the cat into Saraf's arms, "I didn't get the cat for me, Saraf! I got him for you! I know that you haven't been that happy of late, that you have been quite upset in fact over various things. I thought that a nice companion like a perzi would help to perk you up a bit." She told him sweetly, giving him a happy smile, before patting him on the shoulder, "You need to give him a name and he will be your new companion! I know it won't make up for everything but I do hope that it puts a smile back on your face. I don't like seeing my baby sad."

Saraf's eyes got wide and his cheeks went a dark red as she called him 'her baby' a term that always embarrassed him like nothing else. She was a wonderful mother, but it didn't mean that she wasn't really good at making him blush. He looked down at the feline in his arms before the creature crawled up onto his shoulder, perching there, tail lashing from side to side. A sigh escaped from him as the feline set to purring. It seemed as though the creature was happy on his shoulder he thought to himself before he looked to his mother once more, taking in the look of expectation on her face. This was one of those moments where he had to play his cards just right so as not to upset her. Upsetting his mother was the very last thing that Saraf wanted to do after all. As such he gave her the best smile that he could muster before he said, "Thank you, mother. I can't say that I have ever considered raising a perzi before, but I am sure he will be a nice addition to the family."

It seemed to be the right answer since she clapped her hands happily in response to his words, "Wonderful! I'm so glad to hear that you like him!" She said, reaching up to scratch the kitty under the chin before patting Saraf on the cheek, "And just look, you're smiling again and everything! It seems that the perzi was the best choice of a gift for you, Saraf!" She said happily.

"I am glad that you got him too." He said, knowing that the cat wasn't exactly what he'd been looking to get, and just because he'd called Issaly a kitten didn't mean he wanted one. It was mostly that the kid had reminded him of a kitten, probably due to his big eyes and personality? The perzi was not the missing Issaly but he supposed the perzi was something that could keep his mother company in the boy's place. He knew that she missed him, looking after him, going to the market and on walks with him, it had been another little youngling for her to raised but Issaly's fool brother had destroyed that for her.

Shaking his head he pushed such thoughts aside. The two Shifters were gone, long gone, probably buried deep in Jauhar again which was a place that he would never go again. As such he hoped that the perzi was something that would replace Issaly in her heart and allow her something else to take care of in the brat's stead. So long as it behaved itself and kept his mother company then he saw no reason why the perzi couldn't stay. Turning to look at the mother he said, "You can feel free to play with him any time you want as well, mother, I know that you are a fan of small animals." Probably a bigger fan then Saraf himself was.

Plucking the cat off his shoulder he handed it off to her and she hugged it carefully to her chest, mindful of the crystals along the perzi's spine, "Alright, I will take care of him when you're training or out of the house." She said in a reassuring manner before she looked down at the perzi, "I think we should see about getting him a nice, pretty collar! Something fancy that will make him look that much more handsome, don't you think, Saraf?"

Saraf blinked a couple times, an uncertain look on his face, before he gave a slow nod, "I suppose that a collar would be useful for him to have. Though we probably shouldn't go overboard, right? I mean a perzi probably doesn't need a really expensive collar, right?" He watched as his mother started toward the kitchen with the perzi in her arms, not giving him a direct answer, which worried him just a bit, "Mother? Really... he doesn't need a fancy collar!" He called, moving to chase after his mother and the perzi that she was already threatening to spoil far too much.
