Orpheus Solon

Today had been an interesting day for the soldiers-in-training. Instead of being worked to the bone as was normal, they sat at the outskirts of the training grounds, watching the seasoned warriors do their routines. The air was abuzz with curiosity, many of the others wondering if this might be a sign that they would soon be accepted as true members of the army, and not just little boys and girls that played with wooden swords and shields. As the heat of the sun went on, for once the trainees did not tire or wish for the day to end, instead growing more excitable and fascinated at the training before them.

To the back of the group, near the shadows, sat a darker Oban with a deep set frown. Nuri eyed the Oban Warriors with boredom, not quite sure what to think or where to go. If it had been a few weeks prior, he might have been fascinated like the rest of his peers, on the edge of his seat and chomping at the bit to see the assassins and the brutes. Instead, he found his eyes drifting away from the swordplay toward the other groups of trainees, the ones who were more focused on the subtler classes. He could hear the Janarim cry in the distance, and his eyes caught a flash as one dashed out to strike the other. If only he could sneak away and observe that kind of battle, maybe than he could ask the questions that were on the edge of his mind all these weeks since he first caught sight of Naraka.

"That's enough for today. Get out of my sight before I send you out there to join the training."

Everyone jumped to attention at the trainer, rushing off and out of the field before he made good on his threat. They had learned early on that their trainer wasn't one to make idle threats, and Nuri wasn't one to test his patience. As the trainer glanced his way, he turned and took one last glance at the group of fighters with familiars in the far side of the training grounds, before letting out a grumble and turning blindly on his heel to follow his fellow prentices out of the grounds and head home.

Among the older soldiers that were training was one who was trying as hard, if not harder, then those around him. It was something that he'd learned long ago that he was going to have to do. To continue to train not only with his peers but on his own time as well, it was the only want to make sure that his skills and senses were honed enough to compensate for the fact that he was half blind in one eye. It wasn't an injury that he was going to allow to ruin his chances to do what he'd been dreaming of doing since he was quite young, that being to climb the ranks in the Oban army, and fix what he perceived as being wrong with it. He still felt that, were a good number of the officers in charge not complete idiots, that they wouldn't have lost the war.

It was only when those in charge told them that it was 'enough for today' that Saraf let up on the one that he'd been training with, thanking the other man for the 'match'. The one he'd been sparring with seemed only too happy to collapse on the spot, obviously exhausted. Saraf on the other hand didn't feel like he'd done enough. In fact he wanted to continue training. He wanted to do more, so much more, to practice drills that would aid him in being ready for inevitable attacks against what enemies would perceive as a blind spot or a weakness. He wouldn't let it become that though, if anything the issue with his eyes was going to be a driving force instead, one that helped him to get stronger instead of making him weaker.

Walking first over toward a weapon stand he left the practice sword there, picking up his own weapon instead, the one he carried and would use if he ran into anything or anyone dangerous. He wasn't about to use it in practice, not wanting to risk any of his fellow Obans in a sparring match, not when, in his perfect future, they would be 'his' soldiers serving him. It was a nice dream he thought to himself with a smile. He'd change a lot of things for sure, starting with the trainees. Why were they just watching? They could be working with the older soldiers, something that would help them get stronger, learning by doing but also getting pointers from them. Shaking his head he tried to focus, he couldn't very well set about plotting, not when he wasn't high enough in rank to do so. Sure, he had a basic rank, but not a good enough one to really have any pull. Yet.

Nuri moved at a slower pace than his peers, still deep in thought as they made way toward the exit and past the weapon stands. Staffs, blades, shields, hammers, all appeared in some sort of practice form on the stands before them, and the prentices took a moment to comment and eye the few actual weapons that some of the seasons soldiers had brought in. Nuri too took a chance to glance at them, remembering when he was considering dual blades or gauntlets. Now, he felt no pull toward weapons.

Even if he decided to pursue any sort of animal class, he would focus on a whip that would involve the familiar itself. That would still mean no weapon, which would mean the weapons he had been playing with all this time were a waste. Shaking his head, he looked at the elder warriors with a deep frown, trying to imagine himself in their place. Could he wield a weapon like the half-blind man he currently was glaring at.

Wait...he was glaring. Oh...no. Quickly, Nuri diverted his glare, but it was too late, he knew he had held his gaze far too long, and common curtsy required he make some sort of statement to cover why he was staring.

"Uh.." He attempted to speak, clearing his throat a moment as he looked at the Oban before him, trying to avoid eye contact with Saraf as he spoke, ""Your moves were respectable. I hope to one day find myself on with you at my side, it would be good to have your back, and you have mine. Thank you for the lesson."

Hopefully, that would suffice for the awkward stare he unintentionally had provided.

Saraf could feel eyes on him, something that made him instantly go stock still before he set to looking around the area. Someone was starring holes into him and the question swiftly became why? He had various things about him that would likely get people glaring at him, everything from the fact that once upon a time ago he'd chatted up Lady Naevius calling her by name and not title, the fact that he was a nobleman's out of wedlock secret son, or even the rumor about how he'd been keeping slaves even after it was banned. He was sure if he thought about it even harder he could come up with various other reasons a person could glare at him, his arrogant attitude and distaste for the higher up for instance. Amongst them there were only a hand full worth a damn if you asked Saraf, one of them being Lady Naevius who he'd actually talked to and found to be quite intelligent.

After a moment his eyes laned on the one that seemed to be glaring at him so hard. He shifted his stance, head lifting, and he starred back and he approached the younger man. So that was the one who had a problem with him, huh? One of the trainees? Talk about a rude little thing, but Saraf couldn't help but wonder what issue that one had with him. Once he was in charge he supposed that he was going to have to deal with such people and their glaring he thought to himself, it just came with the territory. Opening his mouth he was about to question the other, but didn't get the chance as the other seemed to blurt out his own words first. From there it was just Saraf having to decide upon if the kid was being sarcastic or not.

After a moment of carfully studying the kid that went from glaring at him to being unable to look him in the eye he finally said, "Respectable is a decent enough compliment, I suppose. I am striving for a bit more then that though." He gave the kid a grin before he chuckled, unable to help it, "You wish to be one of my subordinates once I climb then ranks, huh? So long as you work hard I don't mind." He needed loyal soldiers after all, especially if he was going to one day become an officer in the army. Hard to do that without allies after all, something that could be difficult to find when you were trying to take the job of one of yours seniors who had been around a while.

Nuri let out a breath at that, and raised his shoulders to come to a rest in a perfect pose. It seemed his glare and words had come to a pass, and now he could relax back into his cold exterior that was acceptable as a warrior. Yes, he could go back to the posture that was what his father wanted, and what the trainers expected.

"Subordinate? I doubt any of us wish for that. I didn't join the cause to be a subordinate. I joined to be much more..."

Yes, he had joined based on the glory and the stories he grew up on. The times he spent sitting as his father finished up lessons with his eldest brother, not having any more to teach. There was nothing for Nuri to learn, and so their father instead told of the Oban glory, and the purpose the great nation had for the savages of other lands. It would be an honor for the youngling to fight for their nation, a great honor indeed. That had been drilled in his dark little head since before he could remember, and if Nuri had any sort of wish, he supposed that would be it.

"Hopefully, for how hard I've been fighting, I wont be settling as a simple subordinate." He added with an even gaze, no insult intended, simply stating his opinion and fact. Worries aside, if Nuri joined the cause, he would never settle for second best. He would always continue to fight and better himself until the day he died.

Saraf gave the trainee before him a long look before he nodded his head, "I suppose that nobody goes into things with the thought in mind that they are going to become someone's subordinate, but it's just the way of things. There can be only one army general after all and I mean to be that one man." It would take some time, as well as a lot of work, but that was Saraf's dream. He'd become someone that people wouldn't be able to look down on and his mother would be able to live a comfortable life, he'd see to that.

Crossing his arms over his chest he studied the man before him very closely before he said, "Perhaps you will become Captain material?" He didn't even know the guy but he was almost certain that he'd probably make a better captain then their current one. If you asked Saraf it was that b*****d that lost the war for them, spending more time ogling prisoners then he did making sure said prisoners didn't escape. Everything that the man had done the day those savages escaped showed that the Oban army, an army that should have been victorious without even trying, had it's flaws. They were flaws he'd see mended he thought to himself.

"I am not sure about you but I am not going to leave my training at what little we were required to do. I am going to do a bit more, if you would like to accompany me? I can't very well trust you on your word alone after all." He didn't recall seeing this one during the war, meaning he might not be battle tested yet. Saraf had little to do today, might as well see if this one was more then just talk.

Nuri withheld a scoff, surprised at the gull of the man before him. This wasn't the first Oban to talk about becoming the great general, and this wouldn't be the last. Everyone warrior wanted to be the big man some day, but there would only be one, and the guy before him was right. There really only could be one. The smaller prentice couldn't help but glance again at the taller man's face, looking over the eye for a split second before eyeing each and muscle, tattoo, and bruise that peaked through from the training the man had gone through.

Clearly the guy was working hard for it.

At the claim that Nuri would make captain, the prentice had the decency to bow his head a moment, "Right...captain." He mumbled at that, glancing at the weapons and reminded yet again he first needed to get his head around his weapon before he could decide what path he would go down in terms of leadership.

Familiars...mounts...tamers...

Suddenly, another wild offer to go off the beaten path occurred, and Nuri was reminded of when Sanele offered for him to go to the party a few weeks back. Lifting his head, he studied the swordsman with an even gaze. More training? Swallowing, Nuri felt the doubt creep up his neck, but also felt the itch to pick up a blade and keep proving to his father and his peers that he was made for this. This was in his blood, this was his nation, and this was his calling.

There was nothing and there was everything to lose. And this guy, he thought that Nuri was captain material.

If Nuri had to be honest, he most likely would have gone to train anyway in his deserted alley, hacking away in uneven movements that held no skill and would only frustrate him. At least now, maybe he'd learn a true form from a true warrior. Stiffly, he gave a single nod and lifted his chin higher. There was no room for doubt.

"Lead the way."

Saraf gave him a smile, "Yes, Captain." He told him, unable to help but to smile. He wondered if he should take his thoughtful silence as a good sign. It seemed as though he was at least considering it which pleased him greatly. He watched him closely as the young man set to thinking over his invitation. After what almost felt like an eternity of thought Saraf was finally told to 'lead the way' which had him smiling a bit, pleased to see that the trainee was actually willing to come along with him. Seemed as though he had a sparring partner for the day, a good thing since it was never any fun to fight against training dummies.

"Alright, let's getting going then." He said as he started forward, heading toward his his place where he had a training area set up in the courtyard of his home. After a short time Saraf gave a pause, turned to look at the trainee he'd recruited, before he asked of him, "So, trainee, do you have a name? Mine is Saraf Ismat." Best that he actually knew the name of the one that he was bringing home with him, he didn't want to appear as though he didn't even have the most basic manners, especially if his mother learned that he asked the guy to spar before he'd even asked for his name. He could only imagine the scolding he'd get, not something he was willing to risk.

Nuri took another chance to observe the elder Oban as they walked away from the army training areaa, using it to ignore the apprehension of what was about to occur. This was the first time he would be training with a true warrior. This was none of the courtyard foolry that occurred with his fellow prentices day-in and day-out, this would be much more of a work out. The nerves began to thrum with excitement, and he felt his back stiffen and his shoulders pull down. Yes, he could do this.

The biggest disadvantage he would have, despite the training, was the build between the two. Saraf held a larger tone than Nuri - that alone put the Prentice at a huge disadvantage.

"Nuri Agnisa" He replied with a nod, making sure he kept an eye on where they had headed. Clearly, they were not going to use any place of the army, which both caused Nuri to feel curious and apprehension. However, he squashed the second emotion as he realized the one before him fought for Oba, therefore he was to be trusted.

"I take it you prefer your own grounds." He deadpanned after a long moment, filling the silence to avoid the nerves and excitement at the thought of the spar looming ahead.

Saraf gave Nuri a nod when Nuri introduced himself in turn. He was quick to file away the name for later, hopeful that, since he was still in training, that he would end up promising. It was likely Saraf's own desires for power caused him to hope for that same power in others in only because he wanted powerful allies at his side as he grew in power. One couldn't become powerful alone therefore he would need allies, Nuri could be one of them, provided of course he proved to Saraf that he was worthwhile. Glancing over at him he found himself closely studying him, sizing him up, and debating over the idea of him as an ally. It helped that the guy wasn't content to be a mere subordinate meaning that he had a lot of promise.

As the other man asked him if he preferred his own grounds he couldn't help but to give a chuckle, "It's not bad when it comes to practicing when I am on my own." He explained as they walked along, flushing a touch, "Though it can be a bit... ahh... interesting as well." He added, at least if his mother was home when they got back. There was a part of him that kind of hoped that she was away, but he supposed they would see. Lifted a hand he motioned to it, "That's where we are heading." He explained, digging into his pocket to get out the key for the front door.

He stopped at the door, unlocked it, and pushed the door open. He motioned to Nuri to head inside first. As he waited for his 'new friend' to head inside Elred, a perzi, came sauntering out the front door, ignoring Nuri completely and came to stand in front of Saraf giving a plantiff meow. He blinked a couple times, then sighed as he scooped up the cat, letting him crawl up onto his shoulder. Glancing at Nuri he said, "A gift from my mother after... ah, well, some annoyances I had to deal with."

Nuri kept silent as he followed the elder Oban, wise enough to keep his thoughts to himself. There really was no place for him to be social, mostly because he wasn't sure how to be social. This was more of a sparring match, and the conversation most likely would build up once they had weapons in their hands and sweat on their brow. As they neared Saraf's home, the younger male studied it a second while the elder pulled out his key, nodding once in understanding as they made way through the door.

If he was startled when the perzi made its presence known, Nuri made no motion, as he watched with a plain gaze as Saraf picked it up and let it craw on his shoulder. He never had a family pet growing up, but he could imagine that the same type of interaction would soon occur with his own familiar. In fact, he felt much calmer at the sight, seeing the warrior as more humane before him.

"It seems quite taken with you" He observed softly, before flashing a smirk and looking around to study the dwelling once more, "You are fortunate to be able to train here...my family conducts business so I had to set up my own training in the outskirts of the city..."

Saraf gave a nod, lifting a hand to scratch the spoiled perzi under the chin, "Yeah, I suppose so. I was a little surprised at first by such an odd gift but I've learned that perzi aren't so bad." They were in fact something that he found that he could tolerate, meaning that it was a gift he could appreciate. Sure, it didn't complete heal him of all past grievences nor did it sooth away his distaste for Shifters, but at least he felt calmer these days he thought to himself as he headed down the hallway, heading toward another door that would let them out into the courtyard. Only once they were outside did he stop again, taking Elred off his shoulder and set the perzi on the perch that he'd made for the spoiled feline to sit on while he was training.

He drew his weapons, moving to hang them up on a weapon's rack, before reaching out to pick up a pratice sword. Once he'd armed himself he turned to Nuri and said, "Go ahead and pick whatever weapon you are most comfortable with. I have the dull, padded versions of various types for you to choose from." He said, before giving him a curious look, "What sort of business is your family in, Nuri?" Best to know what sort of person he was chatting up, as well as if he and his family might make use of the business they were in. It wasn't exactly the most friendly thing in the world to be thinking about but Saraf was the sort that had to think about such things.

"You don't have to say, of course, just me being curious." He added, just in case it wasn't the sort of business that Nuri might want to share with others.

Orpheus Solon

Nuri took a long moment to study the creature as the elder Oban scratched it under its chin, eying the crystals and the hairless skin. It was an interesting animal, and one that he really was quite familiar with. It was a pet that many had around the city, and one he had seen when he visited many of the families with his father. His gaze followed the animal as it was moved to the perch in the back yard, and he found his cheek lifting in amusement as the feline settled in contentment under the heat of the sun.

It truly seemed to have a good life out here.

Nuri moved to follow Saraf to the weapon rack, glancing at the custom weapons as well as the practice ones. He took a long moment to study all of the weapons, debating which ones he would choose. All of them he had some familiarity with, thanks to his training, but none of them really seemed to call to him. After a long moment, he simply chose a sword much like Saraf, one that the trainees practiced with the most and one that he had the most comfort with, before turning back to his newfound ally.

"It's no secret. My father is a trader, mostly with the goods of the city. He has a good eye for what is popular and switches things around with the trends. Right now he's working on expanding his trade to the neighboring lands, and that is proving a bit of a challenge, as I'm sure you are aware."

Nuri shifted his grip on the training sword, swinging it lightly to adjust to the weight as he thought of a trip he was due to make soon with his father to Jauhar. It would be his first time out of Oba, and he was not pleased.

"Have you traveled into Jauhar, Saraf?" He asked after a moment, settling into the standard stance across from the elder.

Saraf watched Nuri as he inspected the weapons, curious as to what it was that he might pick. After a bit of time it was a sword that the other picked up, though was it just him or did he not seem really fond of the weapon. Maybe he preferred something that Saraf didn't have? A bow or the like? He'd have to ask him later he thought to himself as he listened to Nuri chatting about his father who was a merchant, "Ahhh, alright. You have to admit that with this being Oba that he could have been almost anything, up to and including something you'd want to keep secret." Saraf said with a bit of a chuckle. Not as theirs was an innocent country by any means but Saraf couldn't say he cared, he still wanted to stay on his path and look after his people, the seedier side and all.

"Hmm, yes, I can see how it would be difficult dealing with such people." He said, unable to keep from wrinkling his nose just a bit thinking about those savages from the North. At Nuri's next question Saraf nodded, moving along toward the center of the courtyard, lifting his weapon, and waited for Nuri, "I have been there before, it wasn't on so peaceful of terms as merchant work though." There was a moment where he lifted his free hand to the scar that he bore near to his eye, then shook his head to clear rising emotion. No, they wouldn't be able to properly spar if he let his emotions get the better of him Saraf scolded himself.

Getting into a proper stance again he said, "I would merely suggest caution when dealing with them, there are those amongst thos savages that aren't to be trusted." Best to warn Nuri that they were quite dangerous.

Nuri nodded at the comment, but he wasn't one to think too deeply into his father's work. It seemed that Saraf was speaking on the darker side of Oba, and Nuri didn't think his father was doing anything unsavory, because he hadn't seen it. However, Saraf made comment that here was a lot that was going on in their country that was like that, and the thought alone made Nuri uncomfortable. So, Nuri pushed it away and just shook his head. Onto the next topic.

"There is talk of Bandits on the border. My father wants to use me along with some other soliders." He filled the silence as he watched the gesture to the scar, nodding to the warning, "The Shifters aren't the ones causing the issues, they seem quite...docile. It's the others in the area that seem quick to take up arms..."

And with that, he moved into the first of the moves that were part of the general warmups, a simple strike and parry that any solider would recognize as a way to get the blood moving and get used to the weight and height of the sparring partner. The real moves would come soon, right now this was simply a warmup and sign of respect for the art.
