Happy Birthday

Today was Mikhail's birthday, but it really felt just like any other day to him. It wasn't particularly good, not particularly bad, just average. Which to him was really a win. His parents had offered to let him take the day off of school, which was a very unusual action for his parents, but he had opted to go to school anyway. He was one of those strange teenagers who actually enjoyed school. So he had declined the offer to play hookey for the day, which had made his father smile with approval. His mother had made him a big stack of pancakes for breakfast, which he had scarfed down with gusto, drained a big glass of orange juice and went through his day. He probably could have eaten another stack of pancakes, if he had asked for them. He was a solid six feet tall and still growing, so even though he had the physique of a beanpoll, he could take down food like a champ. Still, he didn't ask for more, the fact that his mother had taken the time to make them herself was enough. He gave his mother a kiss on the cheek, and with a nod to his father who gave a grin and a nod of his own from over the top of his newspaper, he made his way to school.

He didn't advertise that it was a "special" day because that would have put focus on him, which would have made him horribly uncomfortable, and instead enjoyed a day anonymity, and went through the day without anything particularly interesting happening. Remarkably he didn't even have a a stuttering attack the whole day, which was a blessing in itself. After school he had made it home to find a birthday card waiting for him on the little entry-way table was right inside the front door. With a grin he can cracked it open and read the standard but heart felt "happy birthdays" and sentiments from his parents, along with the promise of having their usually out door "spaghetti party" that they usually had on his birthday, were he and his parents would bundle up and gather on their little stone patio-deck and eat some good spaghetti and over indulge in one of the wonderful cakes from the bakery by his fathers law firm.

So he went up to his room, grinning as his computer desk had a little gadget box on it with a ginormous bow on it. His parents knew his love of gadgets and do-dads. Flipping the box lit open, eyes wide as the modern case opened to revealed a velvet interior, and a beautifully crafted classical watch, completely at odds with what he expected to see. It wasn't one of those watches he had, electric with calendars and stop watches and dozens of other gadgets on it, more a small computer then a classic time piece. No his parents must have completely switched the box that it had come in for something he would expect them to get them, to add to the surprise, this was a work of art. One of the watches his father wore, and that probably cost more then his whole computer. It was a business mans watch. A serious watch.

He sat his computer chair and examined the watch, putting it on and taking it off, all the while grinning with a giant grin that probably made him look about six years old. He put the watch reverently back in the case and settled in to do his homework, determined to have it all done before his parents came home from whatever event they were attending this evening, the happy sounds of the sweet lady who was their maid but was treated more like a member of the family puttering around in the kitchen, probably working on the spaghetti she had been making for his birthday ever sense he was five years old. The recipe she said, was a family secret, and that maybe one day he would give it to him. She had also been saying that sense he was 5 years old. Which was always followed with a " If I give you the recipe then what would you need me for "

Usually she would stay and eat dinner with them, but on his birthday she would always give him a kiss on the forehead, and excuse herself a few hours early and spend the evening off indulging in whatever it was she liked to indulge in in town, saying that he and his parents should spend the evening alone, and that to enjoy the spaghetti she made as a birthday gift.

She really was the sweetest lady ever, and Mikhail was happy that he had such a loving home life, even if it was strict and a little intimidating at times. It was his, and for all its flaws, he wouldn't change it for anything.

As he finished off his homework, sprawled on his bed amongst several textbooks he had been reading for next weeks assignments, he drifted off to sleep, awoken only by the housekeeper telling him happy birthday and goodbye, letting him know their dinner was ready and waiting whenever his parents got home. With a grin Mikhail got up and showered, dressed, and went down stairs to get everything else ready for the "spaghetti party" that was his birthday tradition, lighting a nice cozy fire in their outdoor fire pit by the patio, letting the flames cast playful shadows on the high security fence, and bringing out the pink box that held his birthday cake, the bottle of wine his parents would always enjoy together, and the big pot of spaghetti, putting it on its heating tray on the picnic table, and the plates.

He back in one of the cushioned patio chairs and playing around with his phone, and sneaking glances at his new watch, feeling himself blush with pleasure as he thought about what a heart-felt gift they had given him.

Movie Night

Mikhail grinned like a 6 foot 1 fool, dressed in slouchy pajama pants and ridiculously large slippers that were shaped like plush green Cthulhu heads eating his feet. His narrow torso was bare, but he didn't particularly mind as he had the windows carefully covered with blankets to keep out the glare of the street light. He scrutinized his mountain of junk food, all scribbled with strange foreboding languages, complete with honeydew flavored soda which shone with an unearthly neon light on his bedside table.

Oh yes. MOVIE NIGHT.

Ok yeah, sure, his friend whom he was watching movies with was practically on the other side of town, but still, they were going to watch a movie together in a carefully choreographed dance if digital cinema. One of the great things about the digital age was that you didn't have to actually be next to someone to spend some quality time. He understood his friends parents reluctance to let someone over that they didn't really know, and he respected that, and he wasn't quite ready to have his charming friend meet the scrutiny of his parents.

Its not that he thought Rene couldn't handle his fathers intense gaze. He was certain that he would breeze through it no problem with his charming pixie manner, winning over his parents and their house keeper in a heart-beat. But he knew the scrutiny HE would be under promptly after Rene Left. And he just didn't feel up to it. So this was a compromise.

Mikhail pulled out the DVD from his spinning case rack, still amazed that his friend had never seen this movie. Granted it was still a relatively new movie, but it was just... just... so awesome. He flicked open the case to Pacific Rim and slid it into a little machine that looked suspiciously like a Black Nintendo Wee Console, but was indeed not, and flopped gracelessly onto his bed, the tentacles of his fluffy Cthulhu slippers bouncing as he did so.

He Pulled out his cell phone from his baggy pajama pants and punched out a quick text.

To Rene
Haha, ready?

From Rene
Totally. Go.

Mikhail punched the button on the tiny sleek black remote and chucked it onto the bed spread, still sprawled out starring up at the ceiling. Suddenly from a little lense built from a sleek black on his headboard flared to life, matching the remote flared to life. Suddenly the opening scenes of Pacific Rim started to scroll across the white expanse that was his ceiling.

Mikhail grabbed a piece of taro flavored licorice and stuck the long straw into his mouth, folding his arms behind his head. His phone made the Extra Life sound effect from Zelda, Majora's mask, letting him know Rene had scent him another text.

From Rene
I haven't seen this, so sorry if I get confused.

Mikhail shoot his head, grinning. Rene was so worried, but he knew that the older boy would take to this movie like a fish to water. It was right up his alley, which was one of the reasons he was so stunned that he had yet to see it. He punched back another text, still grinning, neon purple piece of licorice waving around in the air as he nommed on it while texting.

To Rene
You'll be fine.

His eyes flicked back up to the screen as aliens started appearing on his ceiling.

To Rene
It's fairly easy to follow. Oooh! I like this part!

Mikhail set his phone on his chest, staying sprawled out carelessly on his bedspread, munching in bizarre favored foods and drinking bizarre flavored beverages, watching a movie with his best friend across town.

You know... if this was going to become a regular thing with them... He was going to have to build Rene some sort of Microphone headset. Yeah, some headphones that didn't block out all the sounds of the movie, but yet still allowed them to talk, and hear each other, without the hassle of racking up a cell phone bill. Like a direct link from one room to the other, only better then skype.

Come to think of it he had some high end walkie talkies that he hadn't used in forever, sense had never had anyone to use them with until now. He had all the parts... he would make this happen.

He grinned, and watched a movie about humans defending the earth from crazy space invaders, trying to overlook how close that little situation hit to home for his life now, and carefully started designing the schematics for a headset for his best friend...
