Appearance
It had been a long day, and for one of the only times in Tau’s life, he felt down and beaten. His brother was with his parents, allowing him to actually feel like this and not feel guilty about it. Because though it might have been a surprise to most, Tau could actually feel negative emotions.
He had heard it all before, and while it wasn’t anything new, every time made him question himself and his motives. Did he really look ridiculous? He wanted to think that they were just messing with him, and he was actually a cool guy. He knew he was a cool guy. And he wanted to dress the part. Too bad the others didn’t think of it like that. Tau sat on a large stone in the forest. He had wandered off after a pretty rough day. His little brother was following him as usual, and while he was strutting his stuff and helping Taye with his body paint he could hear them. The snickering. He wouldn’t show any sign of knowing he heard them, but he was almost shocked to think that they would say things like that with his brother around.
It had been a group of girls about his own age, and of course it would be girls, they loved to gossip and talk smack. It was almost too typical. He thought they would be a little more appreciative of his self-appointed patrols of the village. And as he thought about it, he recalled numerous occasions where individuals made fun of him, but he just thought that that had been playful banter, or maybe a slight envy. He squared his shoulders at the thought that it was all misleading.
He got up from his seat on the stone and walked to the only known source of water around the village. Of course there could be more, but Tau didn’t get to go too far from home very often. It was here that he usually applied all of his paints. It was the only place clear enough to get a reflection. He looked at himself in the water and with a sigh pulled his headdress off of his head. Maybe this was better. He rubbed at his paint with his fists, working it off of his face. Was this better? He couldn’t tell. He didn’t think he looked bad to begin with. Maybe he needed a second opinion.
He took off from the pond and practically ran back to his home. Even though it was dark the lights were still on; something he knew would happen. By now it was probably past Taye’s bed time and he would be sound asleep. Father would be working on fixing anything that was broken and mother would be sewing patches into Taye’s clothing. That little kid fell more times than Tau could possibly believe. He slowed himself down and took deep breaths to steady his breathing before entering the house again. He didn’t want his mom to freak out like she normally would if Tau just burst through the door out of breath. He looked down at his headdress, still in his hands and clutched it tight. He puffed out his chest and put on his cocky attitude that was typical of Tau, wanting nothing more than to not show weakness or uncertainty. He was already going to look uncertain enough, and possibly a bit foolish with his questions, he didn’t need to add more to it.
He sauntered into his home, absolutely right about what would be going on inside. The house was small, but not that small, with rooms for everyone to sleep separately and a large living room that housed the rest of the spaces like kitchen and workplace. The curtains to Taye’s room were drawn shut, and his father was busy fixing a leg to one of the kitchen chairs. His mother was at the work bench with a candle nearby, quietly sewing a new patch. He looked to his dad quickly, relieved that he was too busy to notice. His mom made eye contact with him and Tau strutted to meet her at the table, giving her a kiss on the cheek. ”Hello mother,” he said rather loudly, but then quieted his voice so hopefully his father couldn’t hear, ”can we talk?” His mom looked from Tau to his father quickly with understanding in her eyes; it wouldn’t be the first time one of her children asked her something like this.
She looked Tau in the eyes with a gentleness, ”Oh Tau, I’m glad you’re home. I forgot to get the laundry from the clothesline outside; can you help?” His mother was good at cover ups. If it was daylight, she would have asked for help with washing, or something similarly womanly and normal to ask. ”Of course I’ll help.” He waited for his mother to lead the way out of the back door, passing his father on the way out. ”Hey dad.” His father grunted in a brief reply; the usual answer when he was caught up in working.
When they were outside, his mother led the way to a bench in the back, the usual spot for talking and advising. His mom lifted her hand to rub his shoulder as he sat, ”Tau honey, what is it?” Tau sighed, his mom seemed to know everything, she would probably be able to guess what was coming next. He looked down at the headdress still in his hands and huffed before answering. ”Do I… look ridiculous?” He looked up at his mom with his large eyes in what was as close to shame as Tau had ever felt.
”Taudor, honey, what do you think?” She asked him. He knew she was concerned – or angry – when she used his full first name. She had stopped using it regularly years ago, after Tau had thrown such a fuss about it in the first place.
Tau shrugged his shoulders and let them sag. ”I think… I don’t know what I think. I wanted a second opinion because I don’t know. Everyone else thinks I do.” He pointed to his face as if to prove a point.
”Now honey, I’m not going to tell you whether you should change yourself or not, but you need to decide how important this is to you. If you want to change, change for yourself and not for others.”
Tau took a deep breath at his mom’s words of wisdom. She sure did know what to say when one of her children was feeling down. ”Maybe I should change. Just for me. It would save a lot of prep time in the morning.” He laughed at his own joke.
His mother, probably to humor him, laughed at well. ”You’re probably right about that. But whatever you do, don’t cut that long hair of yours. It’s too nice for you to chop it all off.” She pulled on a chunk of it playfully. ”Now, I don’t want to hear any more nonsense about looking ridiculous. You do what you need to do and I’m here for you. I’m your mother.”
Tau gave his mom a rather tight hug, something her rarely did even in private. But today was just one of those days, and it felt as good a time as any. From here on out, he was a changed man – on the outside at least.

Family (Class Affinity Solo)
Tau stretched his arms high above his head. This was the first time he was out without his paint on and he had traded his big headdress for a smaller headband, and so far, he liked it. He had a smile across his face as he looked up at the sun shining overhead. He didn’t have to take so much time to get ready, so really, it was so much earlier than he was usually out and about. It was still morning.
He shook his head and ran his fingers through his hair; today was going to be a good day. He could feel it.
He looked back at his house and thought about his little brother. Why not enjoy the day with him? He strode back into the house and announced to the family. ”I’m going to Jauhar. And Taye’s coming with me.” He was matter-of-fact about it, telling his parents and Taye rather than asking them, but Taye didn’t seem to mind. He jumped up off of the floor and bounced up and down. ”Oh good! Let’s go now!” he yelled to Tau and his parents.
His parents shook their heads a moment, his mother sighing and about to object. ”We’re off then.” Tau announced before he could be shot down. He grabbed Taye’s hand and tried to rush out the door. ”Be safe you two.” his mother called out. Tau stopped abruptly and looked at his mother questioningly. She never went for stuff like this. ”Allllrrriight then? Be back later!” It didn’t take him long to shake off his mom’s strange reaction and he was out the door, his brother in tow.
”Alright. It’s a long walk, so no wimping out. I’ve never been to Jauhar and I’m not turning back because you’re tired.” He lectured to Taye, pointing a finger his way. Taye nodded his head and piped up. ”Hey! I’ve never been either! I wanna go!”
Taye hurried off in response, running towards the general direction of Jauhar and Tau couldn’t do much but to take off after him. ”Slow down. You’re just going to get more tired that way! Don’t you listen to anything I say?!” Tau yelled out. He wasn’t about to let Taye run the whole way there and then want to go home before they even reached the edge of the forest.
It was pretty hard to catch up to a 10-year-old, something Tau had never realized until then, what with his energy and springy legs, Taye was getting a pretty heavy head start. But eventually it happened and when it did, Tau tackled him to the floor, the both of them rolling through the dirt and getting all sorts of mucked up. ”What did I tell you?!” Tau gasped out when they finally righted themselves. ”We need to pace ourselves. Unless today’s just not gonna be the day we go.” Tau crossed his arms and frowned. Taye had gotten incredibly roudy as he got older. Kinda reminded Tau of himself to be honest, but he would learn just like he had to learn.
Taye bowed his head, feigning apology. ”You’re right Big Brother; you’re always right.” He punched Tau in the arm playfully before getting up and brushing the dirt off of himself carefully. Taye had always mimicked Tau, even when he was younger, so of course he would be wearing paints himself now that he was old enough to do it without having their Mom to tell him not to.
Tau took the punch with a faked wince and punched back one he got up himself. ”Alright. Let’s do this.”
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
They had finally reached the Tale/Jauhar border and stood staring at the entrance to the jungle. Neither of them really knew what laid ahead for them. It was the epitome of wilderness, and to be honest, Tau was a little scared. He swallowed hard and looked down at Taye, who was doing much the same. ”Alright. Stay next to me.” Tau puffed up his chest and strode into the forest, Taye literally following after Tau and doing much of the same. The Jauhar forest was full of strange noises, rustling in the leaves, and animals that he knew nothing of, but Tau was going to do this bravely.
There was a rustling nearby; something was coming. Tau looked around, trying to find the source of the commotion, pushing Taye behind him. This could get serious, and fast. Tau picked up a large branch from the ground, ready to strike whatever it was that was about to come out of wherever it was coming out from.
Suddenly, there was a large swooshing sound and a giant nondwa flew out from the brush to their right. Tau had never seen one before, and neither had Taye for that matter, and the two of them were certainly a sight to behold. Tau jumped back, tripping over Taye’s feet, and swinging the stick in the air, poking out towards the Nondwa as it continued to fly off. It didn’t even give them a backward glance as Tau completed his fall and him and Taye both ended up on the ground, a tangled mess. It was just a good thing that nobody had seen that or Tau would have died of embarrassment. Tau looked down at Taye; he probably would have, too.
The two of them righted themselves and looked at each other solemnly for a second. Tau dropped his branch on the floor and they just started to laugh.
After they had finished laughing, they stood up, looked to each other once more, and decided that maybe today wasn’t the best day to go into Jauhar. Tau shook his head and they both quickly turned around and headed back home, knowing that neither of their parents would know what had happened.
On that walk home, Tau’s head was full of thoughts. Thoughts of protecting his brother, protecting his family, protecting his home, and how easy it had felt to hold that long thin branch. It felt to him as if he were holding a spear, and who knew, maybe a spear was what he would want. Maybe it was right for him. And it did look flashy. That settled it, a spear it was. If that giant bug was just one of the things Not Tale had to offer, he would need his spear sooner than he thought to protect the things he cared about.

Funny Story...
Tau couldn’t help but shake his head at the sight in front of him. What had he gotten into this time? And how was he going to explain this to his mother? He sighed heavily and rubbed his temples. Alright, think Tau. How were you going to explain this? Seriously. ”Hey Mom, while wrestling this giant bird I sort of offered to take it home.” Yeah. That would go well.
He lifted his head to look at the subdued scorra in front of him. It was still all tied up from earlier, and Tau was still sitting cross-legged in the middle of the square of land he had wrestled the bird down in. The bird gave an outraged snort, the best it could manage with the makeshift muzzle on its mouth. Tau stood up and rubbed the dust off his clothes. Little good that did him. After his wrestling match he was covered in dirt from head to toe, and at this point it was all smeared in. Nothing but a bath was going to get this mess out. He sighed and crossed his arms. ”Alright, Bird. We’re doing this my way.” He walked over and moved to touch the bird’s ties. Before he could get anywhere near the bird it managed to swing its long neck around and attempted to head-butt Tau back onto the floor. Tau moved backward, his arms up in defense. ”Are you stupid?” He barked out. He kicked out and the force of it moved the bird onto its side, leaving it unable to get back into a sitting position. ”Serves you right.” Tau nodded, his mood still sour. The bird squirmed, kicked, and tried to get out of its restraints, still just as angry at Tau for spoiling his hoard of things in the forest. But after a few moments of futile struggling it stopped moving and let out a whining squawk from its forced-shut mouth.
Tau’s face lost its anger and he sighed. Yeah, he guessed this bird didn’t have the best day going on for him right now. He moved closer with his arms out as a sign of peace. ”Alright. No sudden movements.” He threatened before reaching over for the harness and loosening the mouth restraint, letting the bird free to open and close its mouth.
It didn't take long for the stupid bird to begin squawking and complaining and making a racket. It was like the thing had been building up its argument the entire time its mouth was tied shut and now that it had the opportunity to be vocal, it wan't going to waste any time. Tau's eyes threw darts in its direction before he reached in to hit it over the head. "Shut it! It's like you're just dying to get me in trouble."
As if on cue the door to his house opened and his mother poked her head outside, her eyes turning to daggers the moment she spotted the scene in front of her. "Taudor. What is that filthy creature I see lying on the floor by our house?" Her voice sent chills down Tau's spine. She saw right through everything... and used his whole name. Tau slapped a hand over his face, turning to glare at the now-angry bird next to him. "Thanks." He moaned before turning to jog towards his mother. "The village needed me to do something with it... so here it is." He tried to say matter-of-factly, like it was obvious that he would never have willingly gone against his mother's rules. But she wasn't about to be fooled so easily.
It took an hour of explaining and begging to keep the stupid thing. He didn't even want it really, but he couldn't really go back to the village and return the thing. He had to stick to his word or else he would be a liar and weak. And he wasn't about to stoop to that. He tried to explain it to his mother, but it was as if she just ended up giving up and threw her hands up in exasperation. "If he does anything to dirty my house I'll be making a blanket out of him and a rug out of you."
It was surprising to him that his mother had essentially caved. He guessed that since today had been a day filled with surprises, why not add one more to the list.
The day was already beginning to fade to night before he could go back out to the scorra still tied in his yard. It looked up at him miserably, letting out a pitiful squawk. Now Tau really felt bad for him, he hadn't intended to leave the thing without food or water. "Alright, alright, I'll let you loose, but only so you can stretch and get some water." He got a bowl of water for it first, and laid a mount of food beside it before letting the bird up. "Probably should eat while you're at it. You know you'll need a bath, right?" The bird saw the food and nothing but the food, but then again the stupid thing probably had no idea what Tau was saying.
Tau untied him and he immediately got a face full of the fish bits and crud that the family didn't eat in its mouth. Definitely wasn't picky, that was for sure. But it didn't run off. Good. Tau nodded his head in approval. "You need a name." Dimwit was accurate enough, but he knew that even if it was what he would like to call the stupid thing, it was an honor-less name and he couldn't yell that out in public. It would practically shame him. "Minn? No. Jeod, nope." The bird shook out its feathers and began to preen itself, cleaning off the dust and dirt it had accumulated over the day. Well that was something Tau could relate to. "I think you look like a Darrow." Tau patted it on the back and the bird feigned a snip with its beak at Tau's hand, almost bored now that it was fed and watered.
"Yeah, sounds good to me too." He said with a roll of his eyes.
