Solo #74 648
Ever since Rio had spoken to Glyph, learned of the complications between him and the Dragon King whose host he had fallen in love with, a plan had been forming in his mind. Well, not so much a plan at first as an intention, a deep desire to help the pair and the feeling that he should. Still, there had been a small part of him that had hesitated, because he had known from the very beginning exactly why he wanted to help, and that it was not only for their sake, but for his. He had been in a position similar to Xun Jiang's once, a god who had merged with his host and in turn inherited their love for another.
Even now, he still loved Orin, no matter how hopeless he knew the affection was. Eamnonn's wolfman would never - could never - love him the way he'd loved Alex. Some of him was Alex, yes, but the rest of him was Rio or some blend of the two, and it was not enough. Though he had the aoide's friendship, there were times when he still pined for more, despite the passage of time and his acceptance of the situation. It had occurred to him, of course, that he could 'solve' his own problem by carving one of his arrows for Orin and shooting him, but...he simply couldn't bring himself to do such a thing. It seemed dishonest and wrong to use his power for his own benefit, to force someone to love him. If he couldn't do it on his own, then he would not do it all. But making other people fall in love, that he could do! And if he could spare Glyph and Xun the heartache that he knew so well, maybe it would ease his.
Once he'd spoken to them both, he felt more confident in following his first instinct, and began to plan how best to go about shooting two of his fellow gods. Shooting mortals was easy, all it took was knowing their names and making sure he wasn't seen. Gods...gods were more complicated. He knew from his encounter with Lisana at the celebration for the return of the sky that gods could see his arrows, and that wouldn't do at all. If they could see them, they could pull them out, and even worse, would probably very quickly figure out who was behind the 'attack.'
He doubted that that would go over well. He'd have to knock them out somehow, to keep them from ever knowing what had happened. He couldn't literally knock them out, though, that was...needlessly violent, not to mention rather suspicious. It was while explaining his thoughts to his two aoidei, and to Nashwa and Sarka, that Nashwa provided an excellent idea: drug them, then shoot them. The katta knew just the plant, in fact, it would only be a matter of getting them to consume it.
Glyph was the most obvious: candy and Adi. He loved sweets, and trusted Adi...and yet, Rio was reluctant to bring the werewolf in on their plan. He couldn't ask her to knowingly deceive the god she'd chosen to serve. They'd have to just give her the candy, then, and not tell her what it was. The very thought pained him, but...that was how it would have to be. For Xun, they would have to rely more on chance, and he had asked Sarka to help there. She would be best, as relatively few knew her to have a direct connection to Love. It would be less suspicious.
After they'd worked out the details, it was up to him to summon and engrave the arrows. He made Forest's first, carrying it with him for a week until he could carve the other half of the pair.
Once that was done, it was time.

"Desiderio."
It was rare that anyone called him by his full name, and it drew not only his curiosity, but his attention, as he looked from the leather-bound book in his lap to the speaker, Sarka. He had been too absorbed in his reading to notice her enter the sitting room, but the liontaur had his full attention now. She stood watching him with her arms crossed under her chest, with only a hint of a smile tempering her otherwise serious expression. He closed his book without taking the time to note what page he'd left off on and set it aside.
"Sarka. Is there something I can do for you?" Concern touched his features. Was something wrong?
"No," she answered with a short shake of her head. "There is nothing I need. I only wanted to tell you that- that I am leaving. Now that the sky is returned and it is possible, I want to return home." She frowned and hesitated before adding reluctantly, "If there is in fact a home to return to."
Rio couldn't completely conceal his initial dismay at his friend's announcement, but he did his best to quickly banish the sadness. Of course Sarka would want to go home, and he knew she wasn't implying that she was leaving for any other reason. He swallowed the taste of disappointment and nodded. "Of course. Are you taking Nashwa with you?"
"I asked, but she wants to stay with you." The magic user smiled at the god's visible relief; he wouldn't be losing one of his precious handful of followers...who also happened to be an excellent cook, proficient dancer, and exotically beautiful. Sarka had long suspected that there was the potential for something more to exist between the god and the katta.
"I won't lie, I'm glad to hear it," he admitted with a chuckle. "Still, we'll miss you here. Do you think...?"
Though he didn't finish the thought, she understood where he was going with it. "Will I come back? One day, perhaps, but I suspect I will have much work to do. I know my people, and they would never abandon Tarna. They will be rebuilding it."
"With you to help them, I'm sure it will be even more glorious than before." A thought occurred to him, then. He'd been talking so much recently about how he needed to get out, to gather followers... "This may be too presumptuous of me, but...would you care for company?"
"You wish to come with me, Love, and proclaim yourself to the liontaurs?" Sarka regarded him with a tilt of her head, then grinned - an expression that had great potential to look menacing, given her fangs, but the amusement in her eyes was clear. "I mean no offense, but I do not think they would be as in awe of you as you hope; they do not know you as I, and would be more like to chase us both off as heretics than worship you. Unless something has changed - which I doubt very much - they yet worship Sekhmet, and most disdain humans, which is what you look most like. No, I think if any god will sway them to the True Gods, it will not be you, my friend."
Rio wilted visibly at Sarka's brutal but well-meant honesty. "I see." He cleared his throat and attempted to brush it off with a halfhearted joke, "No accounting for taste, I suppose."
"Sorry," she said regretfully, "But it's true. Unless you can turn yourself into a liontaur, you have no chance, and even then, I fear it would be slim. You are not, ah, quite our type of deity...although we do love as fiercely as we fight." Sarka shook her head. "Maybe one day, I will bring you for a visit, but not this time."
"Well, as you wish it." He stood and went to embrace his guest. "Be well until next we meet, Sarka dar Shampa."
"And you, Love."

Solo #76 713Following Sarka's departure, Rio withdrew into himself; not nearly so badly as he had after his declaration of love to Kishara had gone unrequited, but as intensely people-oriented as he was, even a friend taking her leave was somewhat difficult for him. He missed her terribly and immediately, though he didn't lack for other company. It made it much easier than it would have been if he'd been fully alone, but he always missed acutely the presence of anyone he cared about, no matter how many others there were. He might have withdrawn for days, if on the first day he hadn't thought twice about something Sarka had said: that if he could turn himself into a liontaur, he might have a chance.
Why had he never thought of it before? Surely, in the distant past, he'd appeared as countless races so that they would better identify with him, and that he might appeal to them on a more physical level. Did anything keep him from doing it now besides blind ignorance of the possibility, or did he need to be at his fullest strength? There was only one way to find out, and that was to try. After all, the worst that could happen was that nothing would happen!
"Ffy!"
The Tylluan, who'd come to visit as part of a collaborative effort to cheer him up, but subsequently grown bored of his brooding and fallen asleep, startled awake when he spoke her name. Her feathers fluffed in surprise, and she glared in faint annoyance at him as they resettled. "There are better ways to wake someone, fool god."
The 'insult' was nothing unexpected from the oft-sarcastic avian, and softened with teasing affection, and so Love wasn't wounded by it. "I want to try something."
"And this requires attention on my part how?" she asked skeptically.
"I want to see if I can look like you." He paused, then amended, "Well, not like you you, but a Tylluan."
"I still don't see why this necessitates my participation." Ffyrnig flicked an eartuft towards him, interested despite her fading grumpiness at being disturbed so. "But go on. What makes you think you can be an owl instead of a god?"
"Not instead of a god, I'd just look more like you, instead of like a human. I know I've appeared as other things before, before the Fading. So why not now?" His melancholy had disappeared, swept away by excitement.
"Alright then." She settled her bright, sharp gaze on him expectantly. "Stop talking about maybe doing and do it!"
Rio stuck his tongue out at her, but had to concede that she had a point. He closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and thought about what he wanted to be, what he wanted Ffyrnig to see him as: a creature like her, a Tylluan, but also more. Still himself.
It seemed like an eternity passed before he heard a harsh, hooting laugh from in front of him. "Look at you! Look at you, you look ridiculous! Oh, oh, you're so fancy, the Brenhines will be jealous!"
At first, he thought she might simply be teasing him for failing, but he could feel the mana shifting, and when he opened his eyes, he glanced down at himself to see black feathers and golden talons...talons that were putting holes in one of his nice pillows! He tried to step off of it without damaging it further, but found it suddenly much more difficult to be coordinated, and all but fell over instead. He flailed his wings and finally found his way upright again, with Ffy laughing at him all the while.
He tried to speak and tell her that it wasn't funny, but it came out as a hoot instead. How embarrassing! Maybe he should have tried something else for his first time! Finally, he managed to grouse out a begrudgingly amused, "You just try turning into a person sometime, and we'll see how you do." He was quiet a moment, then asked worriedly, "Do you really think I look ridiculous?"
Ffy's expression softened, and she shook her head. "Of course not. You're the handsomest sight I have ever seen. Now come here, and I will finally show you properly exactly what I think of you."
