Remembering the past...
⧽⧽⧽ Journal entry #1
User Image

I can't believe it's already been two years since my coming of age. It feels just like yesterday that my parents left, entrusting the shrine to my care. In their absence I have taken great care of our ancestral home. (And I make sure to keep it clean incase they show up on one of their unannounced visits.) I will admit it; at times I have felt lonely. Who wouldn't? To live day by day solely in your own presence; only yourself to talk to. Most people would probably go mad... It's a good thing I'm not like most people.

I often wondered why we were so far from town. Could humans really be so horrible? I don't recall meeting many in my childhood. Our shrine rarely receives visitors, and when my parents went to town I was always left behind. But now I'm on my own, and I find myself bored quite often. I sometimes consider packing everything up and moving, just to be closer to civilization. But this ground is too sacred to abandon; and thoughts like those should never be made. I don't want to upset my ancestors. I can't even begin to fathom the wrath they would bring upon me.

However, I have digressed from my main purpose of writing today.
In the two years where I have lived solitary, I have advanced my magic far beyond what I believed my limits to be. I've been able to study and experiment so well because I am alone, (minus the dead souls that also call these woods home.) I listened to the spirits around me, learned from them, and developed magical skills that I do believe outshine even my father who has trained me since birth. I look forward to his next visit when I get the chance to spar with him; I'd love to show him just what his son can do. Mom will be proud, I'm sure of it.

Until then, I will continue to improve my magic to the best of my ability. Perhaps while I venture out on my walks I'll even make a few friends- ones that aren't plants. Surely a friend will enrich my life; and a human test subject would definitely aid my experiments...

For now I must return to my weekly routine cleaning. A task I have learned to love. As long as this place is dust free and kept orderly I am content. But the dirt won't sweep itself out... or can it?

I met this girl Myra in the woods. She was beating up one of my favorite trees. Thankfully I was able to repair it before it was too late. That tree is older than most around it. It would have been horrible to lose such a valued piece of the forest...

Myra was quite interesting and a wonderful guest to host. It had been about a year since I had a guest, and this one certainly made me realize I'm keeping to myself too much. I've missed a lot in this past year, like an amazing party that I can only assume had great cake and food. Though, there was a terrible event at this party. Myra didn't get into too much detail as the event greatly upset her. I was almost ashamed to be curious of something that caused her so much pain... but I do need to find out more about it. Perhaps other students will be more informative without the upsetting side affect.

Because she seemed so shaken and troubled, I decided to walk her home without asking any more questions. I didn't want to send her deeper into that nightmare she was remembering. The silent walk home seemed to calm her spirits though, that or holding my hand did. Either way, at the end of the night I got a kiss to the cheek. But I'm still puzzled by what that actually means...

Perhaps I'll take a trip to go visit her soon. I remember what the house looks like, and the walk isn't too far. I do need to get out more and I'd like to make sure she's ok.

I was lost in the town today... Although I try not to stick out like a sore thumb, my height and ears tend to draw more attention than wanted. (I can still feel that woman's hands on my ears! Ugh.) But thankfully a young mononoke, by the name of Mia, found me and leads me around the large town. I was even lucky enough to get a personal tour of the Makai Royal Academy. I almost wish I could have gone there to learn magic, as it was an impressive school. Though I do intend to go back and check out the greenhouse and try to borrow books from the library. I know I'm not a student, but if I let the librarian touch my ears... maybe she'll let me rent a few books? Hopefully when I return I can find Mia as well, I enjoyed her company today.

Party guest, or party host...?
⧽⧽⧽ Journal entry #2
User Image

Planning a party was one thing. Picking the date then preparing for it days in advance. This happened every year for Cassiel as he prepared his own birthday party on the eve of his birthday. Decorations, which had seen much use, were pulled from storage as he prepared to little the house with 'Happy Birthday' paraphernalia. While he decorated, the house was filled with the sweet and heart warming scent of a cake in the oven. It was taking everything in him not to eat it right away. No, he had to wait until tomorrow... All good things, as they say, come to those who wait.

However, even though he was taking the time to decorate, what kind of guests does a hermit have? Surely he didn't send out invites to everyone he knew. No. Birthdays were an intimate occasion, and although he had made friends recently, no one was wise of the date.

Instead, he catered to his ancestors. Those cranky old spirits could use an excuse to liven up and let loose. What better excuse than a birthday party? But why stop at just one day? Why not a whole week of celebration?

It was a coincidence (or was it) to be born on December 17th, the start of the Saturnalia, a festival his family had celebrated with the ancestors for decades. So tomorrow they would celebrate his birth and finish out the week lively ceremonies and good food. Though Cassiel was really the only one who could eat the food... Oh well, more for him!

Until the 23rd, he'd focus on his ancestors and Saturn. On the 24th he'd worry about that Secret Santa thing he got himself into, and the other thing called Christmas.

Satisfied with you preparations were going, the boy decided to take a moment and relax. He sat there beside the fire and looked around the room. Streamers hung from the ceiling, crossing and spinning colors to liven up the place. Happy Birthday was spread above the doorway. The mantle on the wall was dusted and now held photos of his parents, grandparents, and other family members that lived there previously. Although all sorts of spirits in the forest surrounded him, at this moment he missed his mother and father.

"Well... time to pull the cake from the oven." he said to himself, knowing no one else was near him. It was a bad habit to talk to himself. "I still need to decide on chocolate or vanilla frosting. I don't have much more time to think about it..." Pulling himself from the chair, he climbed the stairs to continue his day. He could relax once all the chores were completed.

But little did he know, tomorrow was going to bring a surprise that would knock his socks off!

Birthday surprise...
⧽⧽⧽ Journal entry #3
User Image

Waking early, Cassiel was shocked to see the fresh blanket of snow across the shrine. It was a great thing! He always loved snow on his birthday, and it was the best gift Mother Nature could give to him. But as he stood there at his window, taking in the early morning light, he noticed something.

Tracks in the snow!

His eyes widened as he looked down at the two pairs of tracks. One was large, like his own, the other smaller with a shorter step. Only a few people could break his ward and enter the shrine whilst he was asleep. "Mom and dad." He muttered with a smile, turning from the window to run for his bedroom door. He barely had time to grab his bathrobe to cover pajamas.

Whipping around the corner to the dinning room, he stood there silently. There was his mother, humming softly as she prepared breakfast. The sight alone brought tears to his eyes as he deeply missed those mother cooked meals. Nothing come compare to her cooking! And although he was silent, she knew he was there. How could she have missed the heavy steps on the floor and the strong beating of his heart.

"How long do you plan on standing there?" She asked her son, her back remaining to him as she flipped the pancake. "Sit, breakfast is almost done. Your father should be back in soon. He stepped outside to restock the wood for the fire."
"Mom..." Cassiel muttered as he moved forward, and with all the love he could muster, he bear hugged his mother. He didn't need to say, 'I've missed you' as the embrace alone said it.

"Careful darling, I'm trying to cook and I'll burn the food. Now sit." She ordered, and he complied. "How could we not come see our darling son on his Birthday? There's gifts downstairs, but first it's breakfast. I made your favorite pancakes, strawberry filled." And a tall plate of pancakes was placed in front of the boy, who happily began to shovel them into his mouth.

"Your father and I wanted to check in on you, and celebrate with you. You can't be surrounded by the dead all the time." She said, sitting down to eat with her boy. "It's not healthy."

Cassiel smiled. "I'm not always surrounded by the dead. In fact... I think I've made some friends." he explained, his mouth full of pancakes. Noticing his mother's dislike of his table manners, he swallowed before he continued. "I've been traveling once in awhile. Usually once every couple of weeks, as I still don't like to leave home alone for too long. But, I've gone into Makai and Clarus Arbor. I've meet some other witches in the woods around here. So... I think I can maybe call one or two of them a friend."

"That's great dear. Maybe you'll even find a lady." His mother started.

"Damn right he will." Interrupted his father, dropping into a chair tiredly. "But he's not going to be a great husband if he keeps letting the house go to hell. You had no firewood downstairs and when was the last time you cleaned the well? I didn't leave you in charge to let you slack off and-"

"Don't you think you can enjoy breakfast with your son on his birthday without nit picking dear?" Astrid asked from behind her cup of coffee; that overprotective mother glare directed at her beloved husband.

"Tch." Vidar snorted as he crossed his arms over his wide chest. Unlike his son, who took after his mother, Vidar was muscular and a well built example of a man. He always tried to get his son to work out more, build up muscle, but the boy preferred girly things like painting with his mother. Perhaps he wasn't hard enough on his son. But his wife was a challenge to over come and in the end, she won. "So, did your mother tell you the good news?" he asked, reaching for his cup of coffee.

Cassiel looked up from his pancakes, as he had bowed his head during his father's rant. Softly he shook his head, not daring to speak. He always felt his father was disappointed in him.

Astrid smiled though, "Perhaps it can wait till later dear, we don't need to-"

"Nonsense." The man grumbled. "Cassiel, your mother is pregnant."

Silverware clattered against the plate as the boy stared, fish eyed, at both of his parents. Shocked, surprised, down right amazed. Cassiel was still processing the information before the conversation switched and his parents began to talk to him. Their words fell on deaf ears, though, as he was lost in thought. He was going to have a sibling!

"Cassiel? Did you hear us?" Astrid asked, looking at her son with concern.

Again, he just shook his head. He was still too flabbergasted by the thought of his parents having another child.

"I said we're moving back in."

"What?!"

"He's kidding dear."

"I'm not kidding."

"And why would we move back in? He's doing fine on his own."

"Look at how he's kept the place! We need to move back."

"I think he's doing a good job."

"...good job my........too soft....."

"...........wa-waaa waa.."

"..Wa! Waaa-wa-waaaaa..."

Words slowly disappeared as Cassiel sat there at the table, listening to the sounds of their voices. He was still shocked from the news he would soon have a sibling, but to have his parents return home... If this is how the day was going to start, he'd be surprised if he lived to see the end!
