Roman ate dirt for the sixteenth time that day.
“Up! Get up and try again.”
He spat out a mouthful of soil, grasped his shinai and tore up to attack his sensei. Without even realizing it he had flown up five feet and had his clawed talons in the older man’s gi, shinai locked in battle. The sensei pushed him off easily, leaping back to give himself distance for the next attack.
Grunts and screams could be heard throughout the dojo as mock battles took center stage. Even though it was a smaller school on the Southside of Gambino, the outcome was favorable. Two months ago Roman had joined because he wanted to be like the samurai on TV, and now his skills were being put to the test.
He stood in the sand littered grass, both sets of crème wings spread out for the fight. Everything came down to this moment. All the times he’d been mocked for his mottled skin in class, the scrapping, and the taunts in class because he couldn’t read. Finally he’d have something to say ‘I rock’ at that meant something in the eyes of others. The only thing standing in his way was his sensei.
“I’m not gon’na to let you beat me! I don’t care how old or strong you are, I’m gon’na to win! And when I win, you’ll accept me into your school and teach me how to hold a real sword.”
His sensei looked down at the young boy in front of him with an unemotional smile. He couldn’t show him yet, but Roman truly did make him proud. In just two months he had a grasp on the basic techniques. He had a drive that the other children lacked, which was why he was on the only applicant left. “Keep that temper in check, and we shall see.”
The older man took to proper Kendo stance. The tension in the air sizzled like lightning. Both males were hoping for the best possible outcome, and even though the sensei knew Roman couldn’t beat him, he looked forward to seeing him try.
3. 2. 1.
“Go!”
Roman roared and charged, holding his shinai over his head as he leapt up. His opponent dodged and with a single swoop, slammed his shinai on the child’s back.
The Wrath spawn ate dirt for the seventeenth time that day.
“You left yourself open, and your reflexes are poor. Try again.”
Why couldn’t he do it?! Roman balled his hand into a fist and punched the ground. Why couldn’t he land a single hit?! Was he too slow, too weak, too stupid- something had to be wrong! Hitting him once shouldn’t be this hard. If it was Kieran, he’d be beat into the ground by now.
His sensei bent down at his side. “Are you giving up?”
“No.” Roman snapped. “Why would I? I’m gon’na hit you old man, and when I do, you’ll cry so hard you’ll die.”
The old man stared at him, and then burst out laughing. “What a face! Haha, if you were a little older, I might have just peed on myself.” He slapped his leg. “Stop trying to hit me and concentrate on avoiding me. The first lesson is defense, and though I appreciate your effort, you’re not strong enough to hit me.”
Roman visibly slumped. So it was his strength.
The sensei sighed, placing a hand on the child’s shoulder. “You may not be able to hit me, but you are fast enough to avoid me. I’ve never seen speed like yours. When you came at me the last time, all I saw was a red and black blur.”
“…Really?”
“Really, now get up. You can’t wear that if you’re going to be training in my dojo.”

Overview: A recorded interview session with the Angel/Demon study activity. The subject, Roman, lacks the ability to read or write, thus the extra measures. Interviewer is the subject's guardian. Date/Time: December 23rd, 11:20 am
"Number one; What is the name of the parent that you picked to study this time around?"
"Vilo." Voice is clipped and clearly agitated.
"Number two; What is the Virtue or Vice of the creature? Or was the one your studying a Neutral? Or is it Reshmi who doesn't fall into any of these categories?"
"Wrath."
"Alright, question number three. What made you pick this person? Was it because you were more curious about them? Or was it something else?"
"You told me to." Voice sounds exasperated.
"I know, but you need a better answer than that." Female voice; slightly amused. "They won't be happy with one word answers. Give it a little more thought."
"I'm an angry lil' boy who likes to fight. Next."
"Number four; From the photo do you see anything right away that reminds you of you?" Papers rustled and a sliding sound is heard. "Take a good look, Roman."
"Her boobs are bigger than Lissy's."
"Not that good of a look."
"Eyes, fangs, claws, and skin."
"Alright. Number five; Name at least one thing you have in common with the one your studying up on today."
"...my skin is kind of thick."
"Six. From the reference material, do you find that it sounds as though you have anything in common with this creature that isn't something physical?"
"Yes."
"Number seven; If you answered yes, what is it you have in common with the one your studying up on today other than physical traits?"
"I'm mad all the time, and I like to hurt people."
"You shouldn't say that so proudly...Don't roll your eyes at me, mister." Papers shuffle. "Number eight; What is it that you find the most interesting about the one your studying today, be it something physical or perhaps a skill they might have?"
"Vilo's poisonous. Thats cool. Like a snake."
"Last question; if you had one question you could ask of this person, what might it be?"
"Why didn't you fight harder?"
