Think of Better Things

For once, Sydney was doing homework of her own accord. Was the end of the world coming? She pondered the question, somewhat amused. How rare of the redhead to be studiously working on school without having to be hounded by her beloved parents.

Far off eyes glued itself to the worksheet in front of her, Sydney’s pencil mindlessly writing down one answer after the other. The perpetual scratching and scribbling of graphite against paper broke the silence that forebodingly settled itself in her room. She kept on writing and writing, wondering if she could cram enough formulas and facts into her head to stop herself from worrying.

Was the end of the world coming? The words echoed in her mind a second time.

Her pencil stopped and she sighed, the seemingly endless stream of words and numbers trickling to a stop. Study time was over.

Yawning, Sydney leaned back in her chair and yawned, throwing her arms back until she felt the satisfying feel of muscles stretching. She pushed back her homework, staring at her half-finished sheet with a blank gaze.

Was she scared of things that went bump in the night? She wanted to say no, but she wasn’t so sure anymore.

Uncertainty comfortably settling itself in her eyes, Sydney stared out her window and into the dusky blue city. She could picture it in her mind. Maniacally grinning creatures lurking in the dark alleys, swathed in shadows until an unsuspecting civilian passed by. Its eyes would gleam and lunge forward to claim one of its many victims of the night.

She shuddered and tore her gaze away from her window, a gangly arm reaching out to pull the curtains closed. Sydney lowered her head and hugged herself, unsurprised to find her skin to be stone cold. Furiously shutting her eyes closed she held herself tighter. “What’s wrong, Sydney? What’s wrong?” she muttered to herself.

Dipping her head even lower, she let out a choked laugh. She was acting like such a coward right now. Wasn’t that right?

Sydney lifted her head to stare up at the plain ceiling of her room. “It’s time to stop being so scared,” she declared and rushed forward to meet her homework.

“Hello there, permutations,” whispered Sydney, a pencil creeping into her grasp.

Heck, the past few weeks weren’t all that terrible. An occasional nightmare, yes. That weirdo meeting with the plushie monster, yes, but there was more than that! School, chatting with her friends, tormenting her brothers. Meeting that cool librarian. Reuniting with one of her old buds. There were good things too. “I’m walking on sunshine, woahhh,” Sydney softly sang to herself. Just think of better things. Just think of better things.

She paused, her olfactory senses picking up an utterly delectable sense. A quiet sniff as Sydney curiously pointed her nose into the air. Another pause.

“Mom’s baking cookies!” Sydney hissed and scrambled out of her room.

Just think of better things, like baked goods!

[Nightmare Solo] Lifeless Eyes

Buried underneath the protection of her covers, Sydney rolled from side to side every few seconds, unable to slam her eyes shut for more than a few moments. She didn’t know what lay beyond her in the land of dreams, but she knew that it would shoot fear into her heart. Eventually she settled for lying on her back, staring at her ceiling, the moonlight and darkness giving the white walls an eerie shade of blue.

The ticking of the clock on her wall was loud and each click was shouted into her ears, muting the sounds of whatever creatures lay behind the safety of her bedroom walls. A quick look to the clock revealed that Sydney had been awake for a couple hours and she sighed, looking through the blinds of her window. It was dark, so dark that if she went outside she just may suffocate.

A shadow danced across the shades, soft laughter ringing behind the glass. She slipped out of bed and peered behind the blinds, spotting a familiar redhead running into the streets. Rosa?

Sydney hastily changed into a pair of shorts and shrugged on a jacket. She scrambled down the stairs as quietly as she could, hoping she wouldn’t disturb the rest of her family as she slipped out the front door and chased after her friend.

Her worn converses groaned with each thumping step. “Rosa! Rosa!” she shouted, and eventually the other girl did slow to a halt, firmly aligning her back towards Sydney.

She slowed to a walk then ceased her moving. “Rosa?” she softly repeated as Rosa slowly turned her head, her hair obscuring her face.

A breeze blew. Sydney choked back a startled shout.

Rather than smooth, peach skin, it was replaced with discolored fabric messily stitched together. Pepper green eyes blankly stared at Sydney, devoid of life as it shined in the moonlight. A wide beam plastered on her face, Rosa began to inch towards her friend with arms outstretched. “Sydneyyyyy. Why don’t you give your friend a big hug?” she inquired in an unnaturally high voice, her eyes turning beadier and beadier with each blink.

The question sent shivers down her spine, icy snakes slithering through her body and turning her blood cold. She hugged herself and took a cautious step back, shaking her head. “N-No thanks—“ Bumping into something, she turned around and met another familiar face: a giggling Liliana, looking just as patched up and sewn together as Rosa.

Sydney frantically shied away from the curly-haired girl, only to realize a ring of shadowed figures surrounding her. “Wh-Wha . . .?

A beastly roar echoed through the skies and she looked up, twirling wisps of dark clouds drifting away to reveal a deep red moon. Childish laughter filled her ears to the brim and she looked around, terrified to see familiar faces that were now marred with stitches and mutely-colored fabric.

“Why the long face, Sydney? Why the long face?” they chorused, stretching their smiles even wider as they crept closer and closer.

With nowhere to go, she stood frozen, warily staring from one face to the next. Barnaby. Annabellle. Sophia. Jayden. James. The list went on. They were all smiling at her, but were twisted into psychotic beams that nerved her. These weren’t her friends. These weren’t her classmates. Not really.

Second by second their once-colorful, sparkling eyes turned dimmer and dimmer, blacker and blacker until their irises were all a heartless black that lacked life and emotion. They morphed into familiar beady eyes that made her tremble and stretch her neck above their heads, spotting the silhouette of a familiar brunette senshi – the only senshi she knew, really.

“Taranis!” she called out, but frustratingly cried when she realized that he too was just like another doll messily thrown together.

He smiled softly, his boots tapping against the ground as he strode towards her. “Why the long face?” Taranis joined the circle as they drew closer and closer, suffocating Sydney with their creepy grins and pushing her down.

At first she lay frozen with confused fear, but after spotting the gleam of a noodle and a blotch of fabric, she gasped and screamed, struggling to release herself. “No, no! No! No! Nooooo!”

Sydney’s alarm clock beeped, bringing her back to reality.

[Solo] Into Hell

This town got weirder by the day, seriously. Yet, perhaps it had always been weird and it had taken all these years for Sydney to realize it? Was it fate and luck, or was it stupidity?

Seated in a café, Sydney stared out the display window. Hearing the cacophony of blaring sirens and screams echoing in the distance, her usual grin morphed into a grim frown. Her tapered fingers wrapped around the chilled glass filled with strawberry smoothie, wet from the collected condensation. She raised it to her lips and sipped through the pearly white straw. Another glance outside revealed smoke rising above the buildings, the plumes of ashy grey blanketing the sky in darkness.

Monsters that preyed on the innocent were screwed up enough, and now this?

Eyebrows furrowed, she slurped up the last of her smoothie before leaving the appropriate amount of change and exiting the shop. She left the comfortable silence of the café and descended into a symphony of chaos, the door innocently gliding back into place. Sydney looked down both directions of the street, deserted like a ghost town. Tightening the hold on her skateboard, she dropped it to the ground and stepped on, riding towards the noise.

She prepared herself for the worst.

It was only until Sydney was a couple blocks in did the destruction begin to reveal itself. Her expression remained hard and stoic as she swerved around car crashes. She blankly eyed the unconscious people that littered the sidewalks and stores, almost as if a sleeping spell had been cast upon them.

Sydney suddenly stopped in the middle of the street, firmly placing her foot down on the asphalt road. Arms draped at her sides and head listlessly tilted to the side, she blankly stared at the ground.

What happened. What happened. What happened. What happened. What happened. What happened. What happened. She angled her head to the sky, stupefied at the mess she had entered.

Her cell phone rang, singing out cheery tunes as she flipped it open to stare at the glowing screen.

Mom and Dad in hospital. Come. –Jayden Sydney’s frown deepened. It seemed that her parents had tangled themselves into this dirty mess as well. She flipped her phone closed and tucked it away, closing her eyes. I want to disappear. I want to disappear. This isn’t happening. I want to disappear.

A hand clutched her shoulder and she was startled to find a police officer, his face serious and weary. “You better evacuate out of this area, Miss,” he said, his tone tired yet still commanding.

She mutely nodded her head and bent down to pick up her board. Sydney walked away at a casual pace, but soon as she noticed the adult focus his attention back to the scene at hand, she went into a sprint.

Her sneakers pounded against the concrete as she pushed as much strength and will into each leaping stride. Get away from here. Get away from here. The buildings blurred past her, Sydney’s gaze too focused on the road ahead.

Where was she going? Shouldn’t she be rushing to the hospital? Her eyes tightly closed for a fleeting moment. “I just want to run away and pretend this isn’t happening,” she rasped out, her figure fading into the distance as she continued to run and run.

And run.

And run.

And run.
