Eve tossed and turned in bed, having been worried about her mother on her latest job. After the little girl had grown from infant to toddler, the ragdoll child had started to notice a few things that her mother didn’t tell her. Sometimes her mother went out of the country, promising to come back alive with a gift for her. The toddler heard a door slam downstairs, waking from the mere sound of it. The sound was followed by the voice of Lila and the nanny was very upset about something.

Curious and scared, Eve slipped out of bed and walked out of her room silently to the main stairs that led up to the second floor. The sounds were even louder now and Eve could pick out her mother’s voice. The tone of pain made Eve even more scared since her mother never had such a tone in her voice. Eve crept down the stairs, hearing everything coming from the living room.
“Miss Poison, I know you are good at what you do for a living. But if your daughter sees you like this, she’ll be frightened by you leaving sometimes,” Ivy closed her eyes at the nanny’s words.
Ivy clenched her teeth as bright red blood flowed from several wounds. One on her shoulder and the other on her left leg, both from bullets shot by bodyguards that had been taken down shortly after the shots were fired. Lila pressed a cloth against the wound in Ivy’s leg, trying to stop the blood before the assassin bled out and died.
“Have you called the doctor?”
“The special one?”
“Yes.”
“Good.”
Eve was shaking by now, chilled by the thought that either Lila or her mother needed a doctor. Doctors meant she was hurt and Eve’s eyes watered as she imagined her mother hurt. It scared the little girl more anything. The mere thought sent the little girl running into the living room, leaving only minutes for Ivy to cover the wound on her shoulder with a blanket and Lila to cover Ivy’s legs with another blanket.
The toddler hugged her mother’s leg, sobbing now with her eyes red and closed. The girl was begging her mother to be all right as if Ivy wasn’t to be all right.
“Oh, my poor baby,” Ivy whispered, leaning over and despite the pain in her shoulder, picking up her daughter. She held Eve close, humming a soft song into the little girl’s ear. Ivy’s dark eyes bid Lila to go get everything laid out for the doctor when he arrived to treat her wounds.
“Hush, my sweet. Don’t cry. The sea holds all the tears one needs to have cried and the desert is dry from the weeping.” Ivy said softly to her daughter, calming the toddler down as best she could. Eve still cried, but the tears were slowly lessoning.
Eve looked up at her mother with watery eyes and hiccupped from crying so hard. Her mother wore a smile that was strained, but the woman was alive and didn’t seem hurt. The little girl smiled and ordered for a story to be told, requesting a story about dinosaurs in the past. She giggled when her mother did as she asked, telling the girl about a dinosaur that walked on the beach and was the greatest hunter among the ocean life.
Eve listened to the story until a knock came at the front door, reminding the girl of the doctor that her mother asked Lila about. The little girl started to tremble, but she didn’t want to know. Didn’t want to know why her mother needed the doctor. Eve watched as Lila entered the main hall, letting the doctor in.
The doctor looked young, a light brown haired man that Eve thought was familiar looking. Lila came in and picked Eve, telling the little girl that she should be sleeping. Eve looked at her mother, who nodded in agreement.
“Night, my sweet,” Ivy said and watched as Lila carried Eve out of the living room. The little girl didn’t seem to want to sleep, but it was better if the ragdoll was sleeping soundly when Damin would start to dig out the bullets. Ivy wasn’t sure if she could keep silent from the pain, but she would try to avoid giving her daughter nightmares for the future.
Ivy waited until Eve and Lila was upstairs to lift the blankets from covering her wounds. It was a miracle that Eve hadn’t felt the wet blood soaking the blankets. Damin came into the room and helped Ivy into the basement while the assassin was bracing herself for pain.
Eve awoke the next morning, worried so much that the little girl ran from her room to downstairs. The ragdoll found Ivy sitting at the table and Lila cooking breakfast. Only the girl did notice the bandage on her mother’s right shoulder, but she was happy to see the assassin smiling with any strain showing.
Ivy hugged her daughter and put the little girl into the booster seat in the chair next to her. The dark elf was very grateful for the basement being sound proof.

Eve walked around her playroom though the room could be called a child’s studio as well. The thoughts on the toddler’s mind were not very sweet or darling, but the way she eyed three buckets of paint that sat to her left. One was of white, another of pink and the third of an ugly version of muddy brown.
Ever since her mother had read to her about holidays and events that were of importance, April’s Fool day had left the ragdoll thinking of what to do for that day. She had somewhat of a plan thought out, but she didn’t know which target to hit first. There were three in the house, her mother whom would be last as a target since even the child could tell her mother was dangerous sometimes, Lila and Damin, the doctor that had been treating to her mother’s wound since she came back from her last job.
Lila was somewhat cross when it came to jokes and Eve knew her mother had no sense of humor when it came to pranks, but the little girl didn’t know about Damin. She had been spending two weeks, studying the vampire and trying to figure what to do to him for the day.
Loud cursing sounded from her mother’s study, something Eve recently learned about her mother was that the woman hated sitting still and paperwork. Eve thought perhaps the prank might make it seem like she was destroying the paperwork. Her eyes went to the pink paint, remembering that it was one color that her mother loathed very deeply. It was bound to get her in trouble, but the toddler couldn’t resist pulling a prank on her mother. Eve knew it might be worth getting grounded or yelled at to see her mother’s face shocked and uncomposed.
Eve imagined her mother’s reaction and cringed, making sure to leave Ivy alone until the other two had been pranked.
“All right, now to get to work,” Eve grabbed the white paint bucket, gritting her teeth with effort. She was still a toddler though she wanted to be as strong or fast as her mother. She dragged the paint out of the room, leaving her playroom and glancing around for the door to Damin’s guestroom. The paint was heavier than it looked, but the little girl managed the feat of getting it over to the old oak door.
Eve then had to jump for the door handle, remembering that Damin didn’t leave his door locked in case her mother needed medical aid or to be sedated as had been the case before. She caught the door and pulled it open to the lovely room that Damin had taken as his own.
The toddler then dragged the paint into the room, glancing to make sure Damin was still sleeping off his exhaustion from dealing with her mother. Eve gritted her teeth again as she sat it by the bed to go for the chair at the desk. Eve mentally cursed being a toddler since everything seemed heavy to her.
Eventually Eve managed to get the chair in place and the paint on the chair. Eve was panting, already tired from her work. With a smirk, she pulled back the blankets, off the sleeping vampire and pushing the bucket of paint over and spilling white paint all over Damin. She was surprised that he didn’t wake up, but quickly got up with the thankfully lighter bucket.
Eve carried the bucket out after pushing the chair back to the desk, leaving to her room to get rid of the bucket. She eyed the two other buckets with annoyance, deciding to wait to prank the other two. She pushed them under her bed before curling in said bed for a short nap.
Hours later, Eve was poised on the upstairs ledge behind the railing with her can of brown paint ready to pour. Lila walked under and Eve grinned impishly, pushing the can over and spilling paint down on her nanny. A scream came from Lila, making Eve jump. She tensed as she heard doors open and the frantic voices of her mother and the doctor rang loud. Eve left the paint bucket where it was, running to her room to hide.
Ivy ran out of her study, having heard Lila scream. Worried about her daughter and the nanny, she ran for the stairs, too fast to notice the empty paint bucket on its side. The assassin’s eyes widened when she saw what had made Lila scream. Brown paint covered the woman’s hair, face, and even the dress she wore. Ivy chuckled, trying not to laugh, but she couldn’t help it when she saw Damin running down the stairs. He was covered in white paint, a color that he hated. Ivy fell to her side, howling with laughter at both of them.
Lila shared a look with Damin and hissed one name without needing to look up at the ledge. “EVE!”
Eve cringed at the shouting and looked mournfully at her paints and paintbrushes. “Well, it was worth the prank,” she gulped and hid under her bed as she listened to two people storming upstairs to her room.
She giggled as she saw how they looked with the paint.
Yep, it was worth it.

Eve lay on the bed that her mother said was for toddlers, but the ragdoll liked it because it wasn’t like the cage when she was an infant. She could get out of it easily and not have to climb over the walls. Raised voices that sounded a lot like Damin and Lila came from downstairs; the ragdoll closed her eyes as she was getting tired of hearing them argue. She wondered if they were at it about the fact that Anya and Louie were going to visit her mother and see the ragdoll. The thought made the toddler frown as part of her was afraid to see how the two members of her mother’s family were.
Eve had run when she heard about them visiting, especially since it was Lila that had told her about them. From what Lila said, Anya acted as if she had no heart and Louie was a raving loon that tended to rip apart his food. For a little girl who didn’t know what her mother did for a living, the thought of what was her grandmother and grandfather scared her.
She yelped as she heard soft steps on the wooden floor of her playroom/studio/bedroom, but Eve smiled as a creature of black and red climbed onto her bed.
“Lava,” she sighed and picked the chimera kitten up into her lap and petted the kitten. Eve adored Lava and was learning how to take care of him through her mother and Lila. Damin seemed to not like Lava very much, but Eve was trying to get him to be used to having Lava wandering around the house.
She looked at him, “Lava, do you think Louie and Anya are nice or bad?”
Lave merely mewed in answer and Eve chuckled as she knew she wasn’t going to get an answer from the chimera. She petted him gently, not looking up as she smelled more than heard her mother. Ivy was silent as the night or the grave at times, so Eve had learned to look for her perfume instead of the sound of her footsteps.
The dark elf sat on the bed, smiling gently at Eve and petting Lava lightly.
Eve didn’t look up as she looked down at Lava, not wanting to see her mother as she knew that her mother would try to get her to think that her grandparents weren’t scary and they would be until Eve actually met them herself.
Ivy sighed and reached over, lifting her daughter’s chin to have the girl look at her. The ragdoll looked at her with a stubborn expression on her stitched together face. The assassin saw herself in the child nearly all the time, her stubbornness and shyness. Even her creativeness. Ivy hugged her daughter carefully, trying to not crush the chimera kitten in her lap.
“Honey, what’s wrong?”
She asked though she knew what was wrong. Eve had been told enough to be scared of the two people that raised Ivy from the time she was an abandoned infant. The assassin decided to have a few words with Lila about telling her only the bad things about her family. Louie wasn’t all bad and Anya wasn’t completely heartless though she tried to act like it at times. Her family was just strange for a family.
“Lila said Louie was bad and Anya wouldn’t like me that I wasn’t acting like someone she’d get along with” Eve whispered and Ivy narrowed as that was unfair to say, especially to a toddler.
Ivy sighed, “Louie has his good side and Anya is a sucker for adorable children, even the ones that are unusual at most.” The toddler smiled a little as she believed being unusual was a complement and it was for the same for her mother.”
“So Anya will get along with me?” Eve asked.
Ivy hugged her daughter again and smiled as the doorbell rang, “How about we find out?”
Eve nodded and gently picked up Lava, wanting him to meet them. Ivy laid a hand on her daughter’s shoulder when the toddler got up. “How about I carry Lava?”
Eve nodded again as she did tend to be a bit clumsy and Ivy didn’t want the kitten hurt if Eve tripped with him in her arms.
Eve let her mother take Lava and then headed out the door ahead of her mother. Ivy followed behind with Lava, moving slowly
When she got to the top of the stairs, Ivy smiled as Anya in a gothic black dress picked up Eve and hugged her close while Louie with his hair gelled back and his outfit being jeans and a black shirt looked over the female vampire’s shoulder, waiting for a chance to hug Eve himself.
They like her all right. My daughter’s sometimes silly, Ivy thought as she watched Eve interacted with the very people that raised Ivy herself.
