Children not brought by storks...
How Valeri's not-so-icy heart is melted...

"Hello, Mr. Valeri Stark! We here at D-Corp have decided that you have fortitude needed to take on an experience of a lifetime. This life changing experience will be available for pickup at 12:30, May 25th. Please try to arrive on time. If you are unable to come then we will make arrangements to come to you. Please listen for the address at the end of this recording. *BEEP!*"

Val had written down the information from his answering machine in a dazedly confused manner of a man that had just been sucker punched while he was sleeping. He wasn’t sure what D-Corp was or why he would be chosen for anything but he didn’t have any intention of letting whatever goons the place had on hand come to his apartment and thus invade his one sanctuary on Gaia. That was, perhaps, what the people of D-Corp had in mind to lure the recluse out of his home.

Time passed, as it often did, and now Val found himself actually trying to locate the address he had written down. He leaned a bit on his cane as he stood upon the street corner and glanced about the various buildings around him. It had to be somewhere but then again he didn’t exactly have the best sense of direction. The man turned the slip of paper every which way as if the act would get the paper to spill the secrets of the location. “I knew I should have just ignored this, like I was planning to,” Val muttered lightly as his eyes again glanced around at the passersby while he attempted to garner the courage to ask for assistance. He was now here by the pure power of compulsion. The compulsion which would not allow him to just drop the paper and hobble home once more, the compulsion that had convinced him to, after days of indecision as to whether he would even give in to the vaguely ominous (to him) message, to go and see what the whole thing was on about.

This time Valeri turned in place, as he should have done from the start, for when he paused in his turning there was a large sign reading: WELCOME TO D-CORP. The man let out a small groan and smacked his forehead with the bottom half of his palm and began to limp his way toward the gates to gain his admittance. The guard on duty watched Val with a much too amused expression. After a quick exchange Val was allowed to limp onward and as the guard was about to say something additional the purple haired man glanced back, “Shut it,” he murmured in a mildly ill-tempered way and continued on with the faint sound of the guard’s light laughter in the air behind him.

Apparently the guard had been watching him the entire time, b*****d.

In spite of the warning the guard called out behind him, as Val turned a corner, “If you can't find the room just try turning around! Hahaha!”

Val didn’t dignify the taunt with a response as he moved on toward the waiting room. Thankfully it didn’t take him long to find the waiting room and nor did he get lost, the wonders of actually paying attention to signs.

The rest of it went pretty smoothly after he chatted briefly with the receptionist and then waited for a while in the waiting room he was then lead into one of the smaller rooms where he was informed he would receive his 'gift' courtesy of D-CORP. The whole thing made Valeri mildly uneasy, like something crooked was going on but not really. The purple haired man was hard put to try and put a finger on it.

When he entered the room he first thought it to be completely empty of life and that he was alone except for an end table and a few chairs until his head tilted toward one of the corners where the children’s toys were kept in a neat little playpen area possibly for those that came with children (for whatever reason unable to find temporary sitter) and he saw a pair of pale pink ears peeking over the edge of the pen. The ears bobbed to and thro as if whatever was attached to them were currently in the middle of a catchy tune only they themselves could hear. Every once in a while the ears would stop with the bobbing movement only to have a small giggle exit from whatever was attached to the ears and then the movement would resume but this time accompanied by soft childish humming.

The song was some sort of odd children's song that Val wasn’t quite familiar with but it was a simple little diddy that quickly got caught in his mind. Eventually curiosity got a hold of him enough to have him limp over and peer over the edge of the pen to see the small rat-tailed girl who was currently fitting shapes into the holes of a wooden box while she hummed to herself. The child appeared to be overweight but that didn’t seem to stop her from reaching or moving around to get at whatever shape that had escaped her moments earlier when she had dumped the box over in order to play with the contents of it. She didn’t seem to pay Val much mind if she had noticed him at all. Softly the small girl sighed and brushed at a stray lock of pale hair as she played.

She was adorable.

After a few moments of watching he finally spoke up, “Hey,” he began quietly to get her attention without startling her too badly, “what are you doing in here all alone?”

To his surprise she didn’t even flinch, “Hihihi! Not alone! You’th here.” She said matter-of-factly and then continued to hum her song without looking up from her toy as she was still intent upon solving it.

Val blinked and tilted his head. She certainly seemed to be a friendly and precious child. “Well, what if I was a mean person that wanted to hurt you?” he asked with a tone of concern in his voice.

“You won’th,” she said with certainty as she fit a star shape into a star-shaped hole, “I’mma lives with you!”

“Wai...” Val began but he was interrupted by the door opening and closing from where he had entered the room prior. He turned to face the person that had entered only to see a figure in a lab-coat with the name of the building labeled above the breast pocket. The tech was a man and of average height, there was absolutely nothing about him that could be memorable about him.

“I see you finally made it Mr. Stark,” The tech said cheerfully as he moved to open the door of the playpen, “was starting to think you weren’t going to come pick her up.”

Val shook his head a bit, “First of all, I can’t I don’t have a room open. Second of all how do you know that is me? I could be someone else!”

The tech laughed and shook his head, “Oh, we know! Just don’t ask how we know, not at liberty to say how. Also you do have room. We just so happen to know that your apartment contains one extra room and so you have no excuses not to take her.” he said all too happily as he motioned for the chubby girl to come out of her pen.

This was becoming a tad bit absurd or so Val felt. The whole thing had started to turn into something like a lottery he had suddenly won and he was uncertain if he wanted the prize that was being offered. He had no way to take care of child! This was madness. If this person and those higher up on the totem pole knew so much about him, then they knew he was not physically able to take care of a child properly!

The chubby girl in the pen had finally noted that the pen was open and had abandoned the puzzle. It was exploration time, yays! So the girl with the rat-features stood up and made her unsteady way outside of the pen. When she exited and looked around herself her face was easily seen.

Val was about to respond when the words failed him when him and the small girl locked eyes. Promptly he found himself hugged about the legs and his heart suddenly felt heavy at the prospect of leaving her here. She was such a sweet child and she had somehow wormed straight into his heart within a short period of time.

The tech had let her obviously let her out of the pen on purpose, that dastardly fiend! Val was now convinced that this entire establishment was out to get him.

Meanwhile, the man in the lab coat watched with amusement and arms crossed over his chest, “as you were saying?” it was always good when a ‘sucker’ came and answered the summons. It made everyone’s job just a little easier and it allowed them to save things like blackmail for later events if they needed something.

"I loathe you and everything you stand for," Valeri growled lightly as he reached down and petted the small girl upon the head to show that he wasn't angry at her. "How do you people sleep at night?!" Valeri blustered at the Tech while the rat-girl giggled softly at the man she had decided was going to take her home. He was funny!

“We sleep rather well and not always like this, you’re actually lucky!” the man in the coat replied cheerfully. “I’ll come back in a moment with paperwork, think of a name while I am gone!”

Val couldn’t protest or say anything in return because the tech was gone before he could do so. The purple haired man glanced down where the small chubby girl still hugged his legs and she happened to look up at him at the same time but now she was grinning showing off small buckteeth. “They didn’t even name you? Cripes.”

“Papi~!” She said cheerfully and leaned her head against his thigh, “I alway'th wantededed a Papi! Now I ha'th one!”

The man raised an eyebrow but chuckled. The child seemed far too young to have ‘always’ wanted something but he allowed it to slide. “How do you like the name Miranda?”

“Kay!” The child answered cheerfully. Whatever Papi wanted to call her was far better than what she had been called before, plus it was pretty! “Mee-wann-dahh!”

Val smirked lightly as he moved a hand down to pat the top of her head, “We’ll work on that,” the man said and was answered with but a light childish giggle.

Medication & Education...
Learning can be fun...

[ABC] [DEF] [GHI] [JKL] [Handwritten]

Miranda was settling in rather well for the past few days Valeri had been working on getting a medication regimen started with his daughter. The medication had come to him in a package and it was marked for Miranda, the bottles thankfully came with dosing instructions so the guesswork was gone for the most part. Valeri had taken time to reschedule when he took some of his medications so that he could take medication with Miranda so that he could lead by example, but still, even today she felt the need to argue that she was not sick and nor was he.

"Why do'th I have to take the'th?" Miranda asked for perhaps the hundredth time as she stared down at her medication, he had always given her the medication at least an hour before the appointed breakfast times, "I'm not th'ick, you'th not th'ick either, Papi~," she pointed out helpfully as she stared up at him.

Val stared down at his daughter with an eyebrow arched and then he gave a small laugh and shook his head, "We don't take medication because we're sick, we take it so we don't get sick. Just because you feel okay now doesn't mean the medication isn't working," the purple haired man countered as he set a glass of water down next to the medication and then went to get his own glass of water and medication ready.

Miranda made a small face at his retreating back and then kicked her legs at the air as she waited. For now and until the foreseeable future she would behave and take her medication but not without fussing a little about it as she did so. When Valeri sat next to her she took up her medication and stared at him curiously.

"Alright, after this we'll go color for a bit and then we'll have breakfast. Got some nice strawberries for your cereal this morning," the purple haired man explained as he took up his own handful of pills and took up his glass. "Ready, set, go."

Almost in unison they took their medication and drank their water, Miranda's hands were small and thus she needed to raise her glass of water with both hands, but once the glass was down both hands raised to the air free of burden and victorious, "I WIN'TH!"

Valeri let out a laugh and nodded, "You do! C'mon let's go," he said as he started to get up and then help Miranda down from her chair, and hand in hand they started toward the living room when Miranda suddenly stopped dead in her tracks which caused Valeri to also stop and stare down at his daughter curiously.

Miranda had remembered something she was curious about but in the excitement of the 'take your medication' race she had forgotten her forming question until now, "What'th th'rawberrie'th?" she asked staring up at her Papi. Naturally he knew what they were but as far as she could recall she never had any, not even at that place where Papi had picked her up from.

"They're a berry and very good, you'll see! Now let's go color. I got a hold of some special coloring pages for you," Val coaxed and apparently the answer pleased the rat-girl as she simply nodded at his reply and then excitedly started forward again, practically dragging the limping man after her toward the living room.

Once in the living room she tugged her Papi toward the low coffee table where the crayons and coloring sheets were set up for her before she woke up. It impressed the small girl that her guardian would go through all this for her entertainment, not only impressed but made her incredibly happy. She tugged at his hand until he sat down and abandoned his cane to the couch nearby. Once he was settled Miranda had plopped herself onto his lap. She giggled at the small 'oof' her guardian had made but said nothing about it. She reached over and picked up her crayons and began to rummage through her options. Miranda had yet to gaze at her coloring pages she just knew that they were blank and needed to be made pretty! After a moment of the rummaging nonsense she tilted the crayon box upside down and poured the box empty of its contents and it sent crayons rolling across the surface of the coffee table. She was going to use them all she had determined. Every single one.

Valeri loosely wrapped his arms around his adopted daughter's chubby waist and watched from over her head with a curious gaze. Her methods were certainly odd. He rested his chin on her head between her pink rat-like ears and simply observed with a small smirk. Sure she would fidget and move around a lot but for now this was fine. When she leaned Valeri leaned with her and just generally was a light playful nuisance to her without hindering any potential progress. She pulled a coloring page closer to herself and picked out a color at random and moved her hand to move to color the picture when she stopped. Valeri raised an eyebrow at her sudden hesitation.

Miranda hadn't really seen stuff like this before to color. She had seen letters before, certainly, watched her Papi write them and even saw them on the DVD covers when they watched movies together and such but those things were situations that were set as 'do not color on, ever' sort of situations and she obeyed. She frowned a bit, "You th'ure I am allowed to color on thi'th?"

"Mhm, I got those for you to color on," Valeri responded patiently as he smiled slightly from his amusement.

The rat-girl let out a small uncertain 'hmm' before she put the crayon to the paper and then began to color. Once she felt confident that it was alright for her to color she did so with gusto. She colored through many of the pages going from the letter A to the letter R before simply just coloring the letters didn't seem to thrill her anymore. Seeing all of these letters but not knowing how to write them by hand was starting to get her curiosity and interest up. So when she finally got her fill after she finished coloring in the letter 'R' she put the crayon down and leaned back against her Papi's torso and peered up at the underside of his chin, "How you make them?"

"How do I make what?" Val asked teasing her by playing as if he had no idea what she was speaking about. He swayed with her from side to side as she sat on his lap, his legs had fallen asleep but that didn't matter right now. Valeri had decided he'd pay that particular piper when he actually got up and moved around unless he figured out how to free himself of the chore of 'chair'.

Miranda uttered a small sound of disapproval and pushed her back against him with a small bit of a pout, "You know'th! The lett'er'th on the color paper'th," she replied with a bit of a whine. Honestly! How was she going to learn anything if he kept trying to play around?

Valeri saw his chance at least for a brief moment to get a second or two of freedom to get circulation moving back in his legs, the right one seemed to need it desperately as there was a fine pinprick of pain going up his spine now and again the longer they sat like this together. He was happy that his adopted daughter was comfortable with him but he wasn't entirely excited about the pins-and-needles sensation that would possibly start shooting through his legs. "Alright, alright, go to Papi's desk and get some blank paper from the paper drawer above the printer," he instructed with a small smirk. Miranda was a good and obedient child thus far he wasn't worried about her rebelling against him though he feared the day that she might decide to do so. She had a small stubborn streak in her that showed when she wanted to do something badly enough.

The chubby rat-girl sat up and nodded a bit. She was going to learn something, and that prospect alone was more than exciting enough for her as she crawled off of her guardian's lap and began to run-and-waddle over toward the desk which made its home in the rather large hallway of their apartment home. She hummed as she moved along; it would take her a few moments to get at the paper which gave Valeri time to stand and stretch out his legs and get the feeling back in them. He began the process gradually by scooting himself back toward his couch and then moving to sit on the couch pushing his cane back behind him a bit so he could have a mostly unobstructed seat. He stretched out his legs with a deep sigh and he squinted his eyes shut while the feeling returned back to his formerly numbed legs. He let out a low hissing sound through clenched teeth while he rode out the invisible pins-and-needles that seemed to suddenly stab into his legs and feet.

Miranda came ambling back and plopped a mass of paper onto the table and gazed up at her Papi looking rather proud of herself though also a bit concerned since the man was also making an odd face when she came in, "You okay'th? Need more medi-kay-th'uns?" He made that face before he took special pills to make it go away but this seemed different.

Valeri opened his eyes and shook his head, "Not at all, sweetheart, now go get your chair from your table in your room. It'll be easier for you to learn letters if you're sitting proper," it wasn't exactly a fib or an excuse to get her off his lap, not at all. It would be easier for him to write and explain the alphabet with her sitting nearby and for him to move and help her write whenever the lesson was done and it was time to practice. Despite the weighty feel that she gave while on his lap it was no issue at all and he never wanted her to believe that, ever.

The rat-girl canted her head side to side before she nodded and scampered off to do so while Valeri's eyes gazed over at the table where the paper laid with a small chuckle of amusement. Did she really expect that it would take that many papers for the lesson? Then again it just might. When his legs didn't feel like they were going to go on strike or walk off he moved toward the table and began to prepare the alphabet on a few of the sheets, just as a reminder for Miranda before she took off on her own as she worked today. He gently gathered the coloring sheets and set them aside for now.

When she returned Miranda was pushing her chair along on the wooden floors, which made the most unfortunate sound ever known to mankind, while she made a very sour face. Valeri also made a face as he paused in his writing and waited for her to settle which Miranda did as soon as she got her chair next to her Papi. She stared curiously at him as he continued on in silence before he put a blank sheet of paper in front of her and moved to stand behind her, "Which hand feels better when you color or draw?"

Miranda had as she put her small hands upon the table and stared at them. She held up her left hand and stared at her guardian curiously as she announced, "Di'th one," in a cheerful tone.

Valeri pursed his lips a bit and nodded lightly. This was going to be a little challenging for the both of them as he moved behind her so he could drape his arms around her and to hold her left hand so he can help her write and go through the alphabet. For each new letter he helped her write he spoke them out loud and waited for her to parrot them back.

"Ay, Bee, See, Dee..."

"Ay, Bee, Th'ee, Dee..."

By the time they were finished they had many sheets covered with letters but the one she was proudest of was where she started spelling words and her name. Sure she spelt a couple of them wrong even though Papi had told her moments prior how to spell that word but she still tried and that was all that mattered and Valeri was still proud of her in the end! Now content with her learning she colored on her coloring sheets for a bit while Papi went to get their special breakfast that they would eat together (after he found his lost cane under the couch cushions). She hummed a song cheerfully to herself before she returned with a bowl of freshly cut strawberries.

Valeri settled next to her and waited until he had her attention. He took a moment to move her coloring sheets so they wouldn't be stained by berry juices before he handed her a strawberry which she took eagerly. Miranda stared at her first strawberry in wonderment. It was red, which was her favorite color, had a pleasing shape, and also? It looked very tasty. The rat-girl opened her mouth and took a healthy bite and chewed on it before she began to squee softly and wiggle.

She LOVED IT. It was the most delicious thing ever and she wanted more! Miranda continued to eat the one she had before she held out her small hands for another wiggling in her seat.

"More! More!" She cried out happily as her fingertips made grabbing motions.

Valeri laughed a bit as he held a strawberry in between his lips, he stopped eating his long enough to hand his daughter a new strawberry for her to enjoy. It seems she found her ultimate favorite food. When she finished breakfast she went back to coloring until it was time for their walk, lunch, and then a nice nap.

She had finished coloring her sheets all the way to the letter L.

Am I your Squishie?
Finding Nemo and Colorin'.

[MNO] [PQR] [STU] [VWX] [YZ] [123] [Handwritten]

Miranda was seated at the coffee table with the coloring sheets set out before her. Earlier she practiced a bit more writing and spelling and now she was coloring the letters on her color sheets while watching Finding Nemo while her Papi sat on the couch behind her and watched the movie along with her. She stuck her tongue out as she worked along without many cares beyond what was on the paper and the television before her.

They had just gotten back from Auntie Stacia's and she got to play with her cousins! It was a lot of fun and Auntie Stacia gave her a lot of coloring books, movies, toys, and music to listen to. It was a rather fun day for the chubby rat-girl and now she was just unwinding before it was naptime. It didn't seem to bother her to have such a scheduled day. In fact it let her know what to expect, sometimes, very rarely, there were changes to the routine but that was perfectly alright by her. She got her letters all colored all the way to the letter Z but what is this? There is another sheet! She stared at the unfamiliar sheets though the shapes weren't all too unfamiliar. Miranda remembered that these were numbers because the funny puppets on the television were singing and dancing with a bunch of them! She was drowsy and fell asleep before she could even comprehend anything about the song and dance. Alas.

She stared at the page and then wiggled in her seat before she gazed back at her Papi, "Pau'th'e the movie and teach me, plea'the!"

Valeri blinked and sat up a bit as she suddenly called for his attention and paused it as asked and moved to kneel behind her and perched his chin on the top of her head and stared down at what she was looking at, "Huh, numbers. I don't like numbers."

Miranda wrinkled her nose and demanded, "Too bad, teach!"

The purple haired man sighed lightly and chuckled and began the lesson at least a simplified version of it that she would pick up later in school when she went. He began with how the numbers looked in written form then showed her how it would look like in 'dot' form just so she could grasp the concept of the value of that number. Of course his lines didn't end up so straight because Miranda decided to help and in her mind it looked way better than just being straight uniform lines like Papi tried to do. Once that was done he showed her how to do some addition. Whether or not it all sank in would have to be seen at another time when she had to put it into practice. So by the end of the lesson the table was also scattered with 'physical' representations of the number values in shape of crayons. Now that the lesson was over she was content to 'allow' the movie to continue and she would start coloring the numbers sheet.

Once that was complete Val made his way to the couch once more and restarted the movie and waited for the stiffness to work out of his legs after being knelt behind Miranda for so long. The movie had progressed up until the part in which Marlin and Dory find themselves amongst jellyfish...

"I shall call him Squishy and he shall be mine and he shall be my Squishy. Come on, Squishy Come on, little Squishy."

Miranda stopped and stared at the television and then stared back at Valeri, "Am I your Squishie?"

Valeri paused and blinked. Would it be offensive to say yes? His daughter was overweight and thus automatically squishy and would it give her mental trauma later? He hoped not and so with a great amount of trepidation he answered, "Yes you are," with a small smile and not letting on that he was having some vague doubts about the nickname and whether or not it would impact her self-esteem in any negative manner.

The answer seemed to please the rat-girl as she gave a small happy sound before she turned her attention and resumed coloring once more as she continued to watch the rest of the movie. Valeri gave a small relieved sigh and resumed watching the movie with her. Soon she was done coloring and she gathered up all of her colored sheets and put them all in order since she seemed to understand her ABCs rather well without any real reminders needed. Sometimes when speaking it out loud she got mixed up and confused but on the sheets she seemed to have a firm grasp of what goes where and she also put up her crayons before she climbed up onto the couch and sat with her Papi for the rest of the movie.

When that was done she was lead to her room to lay down for a nap after Papi read a short story for her and even sang for her a little to send her off on her nap before she would wake up later for more playtime and a bit of dinner! Maybe she could get more strawberries for dessert if they had any but for now her mind was drifting off and...

...Zzz...

Dear Journal!
Journals by Valeri and Miranda

User ImageUser Image
It's hard to imagine that I am anything like a guardian much less a parent for someone that's so young sometimes. I mean I never really envisioned myself to be a father, ever. I mean I love kids, I babysit my niece and nephew all the time and sometimes this little girl named Elsie comes over and I spend time with her, I want to adopt her but I don't know if I can get away with that or not...

Either way I have Miranda to take care of now. She is very sweet and tends to be obedient. She focuses best when she has a goal to work for but I am sure she'd do just fine if she didn't. Goals just help her along. Her hypothyroidism is being managed through a careful medication regimen and it doesn't seem to hold her back much. I am told she has to take these medications for the rest of her life. So long as I make it habitual for her to take the medication...It should be okay I hope. I don't tell her she's sick because she isn't. Not really. There is nothing wrong with her, her body just happens to be different in the way it deals with things. As long as she keeps it up she'll be completely healthy and normal like any other child. That's what I feel anyways.

I refuse to let be or feel left back just because she's different. I don't let my leg injury hold me back.

I take her for walks, watch her diet and I let her try whatever activity she has her eye on. She is pretty fearless for the most part, which I admire of her. She makes friends fairly easily but her lisp seems to bother her sometimes, but she still talks so far so maybe it isn't that big of a deal? Hopefully she won't just give up and stop talking or whatever just because she feels like she can't speak clearly enough for others to understand her...

She gets along very well with Other, my girlfriend, and they both seem to adore each other very much which takes a load off of my mind just in case things between Other and I happen to take off in a certain direction. Even if Other and I don't work out (Gods forbid)...I hope that Other stays in Miranda's life for a good long time. Other would be a wonderful influence on her.

Miranda is beginning to learn how to read and write. She seems very happy to learn these skills, she's no poet or anything at the moment but she seems to grasp it easily enough and even wrote a small 'journal' entry. Haha, she made me promise to keep it in my journal until she gets her own. She wants a journal of her own one day like mine; I'll have to see what I can arrange...

...Oop seems Miranda is up and wants her snack. I'll cut this off here.

Hair Clip Decorating
Strawberry Charms & Hot Glue

Miranda sat at the kitchen table with the hairclip she had gotten on her adventures during the summer at the pool with Mariel. The small rat-girl barely let the hairclip out of her hair since that day. Today she found these strawberry charms at the arts and crafts store her and Papi randomly wandered into and decided to put them on her hairclip to personalize it a little. Papi bought them for her, a special gun that heats up glue, and a couple of other things to help keep them safe and the table unharmed as well as a couple of extra stick of special glue to put into the gun.

Valeri had sat next to Miranda and watched her as she fiddled with the charms she had gotten him to buy with a small amused smile. They needed to wait for the gun to heat up the glue before they could use it on the charms and get it to stick to the small metallic hairclip. The lady at the store assured them that it would work just fine and Valeri believed her and so did Miranda. He leaned back in his chair a bit and sighed a bit, as he stared up at the ceiling for a long moment. He had concerns and thoughts to think over and a couple of them concerned his daughter.

The rat-girl gazed up at her guardian curiously and bluntly asked, "What'th matter Papi? You'th actin' strange..."

The man started out of his thoughts and sat up a bit as he gazed down at Miranda, "Oh nothing sweetheart, just got a lot on my mind," he said simply as he reached out and gently brushed some hair from her brow with a small smile. Recently he had bought Other an engagement ring and it had been a while since he'd been able to spend time with Other but still he bought the ring and ...

She was acting strange. Just a tad. Not majorly strange but strangely enough to cause him to be concerned once more.

Miranda tilted her head side to side and then stared back at the strawberry charms and picked one out and brought it closer to the hairclip as she carefully shoved the other ones to the side for something else later, maybe. She'd find uses for all of them if she can but for now she just wanted to do this one thing so it would help her commemorate her friendship with Mariel! The rat-girl was unconvinced by her guardian's words and after a moment her red-pink eyes gazed up at him and simply asked, "What i'th it?" in a very frank tone that surprised even Val.

Valeri rubbed the back of his neck and sighed a bit, "Well I was thinking of Mami," he finally admitted with a small chuckle, "I might ask her to marry me. Shoul--"

"Ye'th!" came the answer from her lips before he even completed what he was about to ask. It was excited and happy at the prospect that Mami and Papi would get married and maybe they'd always be together and be a family, right? That's how it worked, right? The rat-girl stared up at her guardian.

"What if sh--" Valeri tried to protest but was cut short again.

"Ye'th! Do it, do it, do it!" Miranda chanted, she was taking no prisoners and she wasn't taking any excuses at all. Excuses were for people that did nothing with their lives and Papi was not one of those people!

Valeri laughed a bit, "Okay, fine. You do know we might have to move, right?"

Miranda nodded with a small 'mm!' exiting her throat as she stared down at her hairclip and charm again wiggling in her seat.

"You gotta keep it a secret for a while, no telling Mami about this." Valeri said as he held down his pinky to her. Miranda stared up at the hand and looked thoughtful. She's seen this before! It was a pinky promise! How did it go again? Oh right. She linked her pinky with Papi's and made a small tug movement.

"I won't I promi'th'e." Miranda said with a cheerful note and a firm nod. She would always keep her promises she would see to that! She turned back again to her charm and hairclip excited for her first crafting project with Papi, "I'th glue ready yeeeeeeeeeet~?"

Valeri blinked and turned his attention to the waiting glue gun and checked it on a test sheet of fabric and noted the glue came out easily and with very little pressure needed, "Yep. Turn your charm around and I'll get it on there for you," the man with fading purple hair murmured lightly. When she did so he put a dab of hot glue on the back of it, "Alright now don't touch the glue and carefully put the charm on the clip."

Miranda's eyes were intent and focusing on the task at hand as she carefully clasped the edges of the charm and put it onto the clip where she wanted though a tad off-kilter but it was perfectly alright by her. She nudged it around before the glue dried completely and then she was happy with it. She looked down at it with pride and then gazed up at Papi for her praise.

"You did good. Now we let it sit for a bit to make sure it sets," he said as he unplugged the glue gun so nothing unfortunate would happen, like the building burning down around them because they left the damn thing unattended. Valeri stood and patted her head gently, "Wanna go watch a movie?"

The rat-girl nodded her head, "I wanna th'ee Little Nemo t'day!" she said happily as she scooted off of the chair and clasped her Papi's fingertips and let him lead her into the living room so they could watch on the movie.

"You got it, kiddo~." Valeri said with a small smile and a chuckle. He couldn't quite believe that he was taking relationship advice from a toddler then again it wasn't advice as much as it was telling him to do what he had in mind or else.

Or else what? He feared just enough to not want to find out.

A Little Christmas Surprise
Our first Christmas

It was Christmas morning and both had their medication, bathed, and ate breakfast which consisted of eggs, biscuits, and a couple of sausage links that Miranda mostly ate part of before just ignoring them for the rest of breakfast as she ate the rest of her breakfast with little else said on the subject. Miranda didn't mind meat but it wasn't her favorite thing to eat, something about the texture was something that she could only handle for small doses at a time and what she had was good enough to satisfy her Papi and her. She pushed away her plate and Valeri took it up and limped his way to the sink and washed it up humming a happy little tune to himself. Miranda tilted her head back to listen to her guardian's humming, she always liked to hear him sing he just never did it often enough for her taste!

All morning he'd been telling her that there was a surprise for her and that he'd only tell her after breakfast. Now it was after breakfast and she bounced a bit in her chair as she seemed to wait for him to take initiative and when he didn't seem to take it fast enough she spoke up, "Papi! What i'th it!? What i'th the th'urpri'th'e?"

Valeri stopped humming and gazed back at his daughter with a small grin and shrugged his shoulders, "I forgot~," he replied cheerfully as he finished his dishes and laughed a bit as he heard Miranda huff and give off a small whine. When he dried off his hands he moved to sit with her again and watched her pouting face with a bit of amusement for a long time. He liked holding her in suspense she usually had very amusing reactions when she was driven to impatience.

Miranda stared at her guardian with a bit of a disapproving glare (as much of a glare as her friendly face can muster) and waited.

After a few moments Valeri finally gave in, "You know I had Other here the other day so I could talk to her, right?" Miranda nodded lightly as she stared at him intently. She was sent away to Aunt Stacia's that day! Not that she minded but still it happened and it was fun but she still wanted to see Other though she didn't get to but soon she'd have Mami-Other all to herself for a day so nyah~!

"Well I asked her to marry me and she said yes and we're moving in with her really soon," he laughed as she already began to wiggle in her seat, Valeri leaned to still her a bit, "also Other is pregnant -- she's having a baby, you know like those women with the big round shaped tummies. You'll have a little brother and sister soon," and after he said that he gently removed her hand as she went still and stared at him with wide eyes. There certainly wasn't a look of displeasure in them as much as it was a moment of shocked wonderment. Valeri fell silent and let his daughter digest the tidbits of news and folded his hands over his lap and stared at her.

After what seemed like a good long while she suddenly exploded into a loud squeal, "EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE~," her small hands coming up to her chin in small fist as she wiggled about in her chair. Really? A little brother or sister? She wanted one so much it didn't matter which it was! Santa could totally read minds she knew it! She didn't get her letter to Santa written and she was worried that her wish would go unheard. She hopped off her chair and tackled the seated man in a hug still squealing happily. All the things she wanted! She didn't care if she got toys this year though she knew she would, she saw the wrapped gifts and recognized her names on the tag but still they could disappear all at once and she wouldn't care because Mami was going to have a ba -- wait...

Valeri noticed a pause in her squealing and hugging and blinked a bit as he sensed a disturbance in the force. The world's most dreaded question was on it's way and before he could distract her Miranda looked up at her Papi's face and said the words, "How are babie'th made?"

It was too late. Valeri felt awkward as he uttered a small dry chuckle and petted her hair, "Well, Squishie, it is when..."

Oh Gods how could he describe this without ruining her!? It seemed like words enjoyed failing him. He reached up and rubbed at his face a bit nervously before he gazed around and then down at his daughter, "Well, it's when...Two people...love each other very much decide they want to have a baby," though there was not much deciding between him and Other at that time, "they go to the baby store and they buy a baby and ... they go to a place in the store called 'layaway' so they can ... put the baby in the tummy and then when the baby is all paid for after some months the baby is taken out of the tummy..."

Miranda knew the concept of layaway thanks to Christmas shopping with Papi and slowly nodded a bit, "Th'o how much you and Mami pay to get me a baby brother or th'i'th'ter for Christmas and is it going to come out today?"

Gah! More questions, "Well, it's priceless we...we pay with our time I guess, we have to wait a little while yet til' the baby comes out. It won't happen today."

Miranda looked a little disappointed and a little doubtful for now but other than that she nodded, "Okay'th!"

Valeri uttered a small sigh of relief after that seemed over. He'd modify and correct all of this as she got older but for now he just didn't want to expose her to the reality of it all just yet. Just keep her innocent for a small while longer without making her too ignorant. She knew the baby was going to come from the tummy and that's all he really wanted to get across to her. Valeri was only a little worried about when it came time for the baby to be born and how Other would handle it and whether or not Miranda should be present for such a thing. He supposed he'd burn that bridge when they got to it, "Okay Squishie, go get your coat and shoes on, I'll get the presents ready so we can go to Mami's."

Miranda released Papi and nodded energetically and ran off to do as she told. Soon they were both ready to go each carrying their own bag of gifts as they left the apartment that would soon no longer be their home...
