Mysterious beginnings.

"Flames to dust, lovers to friends why do all good things co-" Carol Connors was cut off mid chorus as the door to her store opened and a small bell dinged announcing the arrival of a customer. Having been facing the cigarette rack at the time she turned around to keep an eye on the entrant only to see.. " Hi there sweetheart, where's your parents?."

A little girl that couldn't be more than two and half stood unsteadily near the door, which had been jammed partially open to let in fresh air. Otherwise the kid would probably never have been able to open it, her small amber eyes darted back and forth between Carol and the mostly empty streets outside. Her clothes were more than a bit dirty and ripped and it became obvious that no parent in their right mind would let their child out looking like that.

With a soft smile Carol moved from behind the counter and slowly approached the girl. Clearly she was like the others, one of those born of Gaia itself, why else would she be looking like that and wandering alone at her age.

Bishop eyed the strange women warily she was tall but soft voiced. This was nice. There was something fuzzy in her head something she wanted to but couldn't see in the back of her head but she didn't know what it was. "'M Bishop" It was what she remembered, all that she remembered since she remembered anything.

Well, she remembered walking outside and people looking at her but that wasn't important becuase it had all blurred together since when she woke up and only remembered that she was Bishop.

Tired and hungry she took a step towards the soft voiced woman, willing to trust her for now.

An hour after first spotting Bishop as she called herself, Carol Connors had fed the girl a carefully cut up mini frozen pizza and had gotten her bathed and looking semi respectable. The fluffy feathers from the wings on her head were still drying a leaving them a bit clumpy but other wise she looked much better than she'd arrived. Examination of her and her clothes seemed to indicate she's only been on her own perhaps a day or two. that and that she was also clearly aware of how to use the bathroom.

It seemed slightly suspicious to Carol at first but then again, sometimes the children born of Gaia came out with all sorts of knowledge and at all ages. She'd keep an ear out for any missing little girls but she doubted she'd hear anything. This Bishop girl seemed very much like Nickle's case had. Either way she's promised herself to take care of the girl as long as she needed it.

She should probably contact her area leader and let him know about this development. She didn't need the compensation offered for taking on children like this. However, all of the children like this did need to be registered as per the societies rules. Perhaps after that was done she'd take the girl to see Nickle.

Back behind the store counter Carol watched as Bishop, wearing clothes bought from the store next door, played with a plastic truck on the floor next to her. She was being very quiet for the most part though she seemed react to every sound she heard and her eyes would narrow and focus as she tried to pinpoint where it came from.

" You're something special aren't you my mysterious little Bishop" she murmured before to address a customer who'd somehow gotten in without her noticing.

No longer hungry and less tired Bishop sat on the floor in the semi-dark of the counter's shadow. She still wasn't sure what exactly was happening but for now everything seemed ok.

Journal log
April 18th, 2008

So it's been about two days since Bishop literally walked into my life and so far things seem to be going pretty good. Although she still seems fairly subdued, Bishop hasn't shown any sign of being scared of me or fearful of anything in particular. Clearly whatever time she spent alone before finding me was pleasant enough that she seems to have no permanent trauma from it. Of course only time will tell if that is true, for now though things look pretty good.

I called Nickle yesterday and he said to take things slowly, to keep her in the store and house for the most part unless she asked to go outside. I get what he means , being in one o f two places will probably feel a bit more stable than wandering the streets. It's a good thing the store is located practically next to a strip mall so I dont have to worry about leaving her alone for a few minute to run out and grab anything my store doesn't carry.

Still, I do want to take her out a bit and let her socialize, it's supposed to be good for kids her age. Unfortunately there's so group functions planned for the next few weeks so I'll have to settle for a park or library or something. Thinking about it I should probably get her some shots before I do that, then again doctors can be traumatizing so perhaps that should wait.

For now I'll just keep my eye on her and make sure she seems ok. For the most part she seems either to sleep or to play on the floor behind the counter. I swear she's going to make a groove in the times running that little practice truck I gave her in circles so much. Maybe one of those foam puzzles would be a good idea as a new toy. It's quiet and not overly messy, plus if I step on it no one gets hurt.

What else can I say about Bishop, there's been so little time spent with her as of yet. So far she's eaten everything I've put in front of her with no complaints but no particular interest either. At least she's not a picky eater.

That's pretty much it for now. My life has done a bit of a turn since becoming a parent but a lot of things are still the same like the shop and my regulars and taxes so I can take comfort in knowing that some things are stable.

A different kind of working girl

" Here you go" Bishop pushed several coins across the counter and smiled at the old man who reached out to take them. Not tall enough to actually be visible behind the counter the toddler stood on a stool her mother had given her. It was her special job to give people back their money when they paid too much for something.

She thought it was a bit boring just standing there and sometimes her legs got sore so she had to go do something else. She wasn't forced to give the extra money back but it was nice to see people smile when she Plus she was helping and helping meant you were good and got treats. She had learned this from Kaimi.

Plus sometimes a really interesting looking person would come in and Bishop would make up a story about them, who they were and what they did. That was one of the good things about her' job'.

Another good thing was when they let her keep their extra money. They just smiled at her and she would hold the coins , it was always coins they let her keep the the soft colored paper, for a moment before her mother took them and put them back in the till. At the end of the day though she usually got a small coin of her very own to keep if she'd been good.

As the old man left the store Bishop blew her pumpkin colored bangs out of her eyes then turned to smile at her mother.

Mother a strange word that brought about the fuzzy images she didn't remember. Still she'd been told to call her that and she didn't see any reason not to. After all mother's were the women who cared about you. or at least that's what bishop understood of the concept.

Mother's also helped you learn things and that was Bishop's favorite part of her job. When no one was in the store her mother could take out lots of the coins and bills and spread them out on the counter. Then she'd show her things about how many of each type of coin were needed to make another coin or a bill.

Bishop wasn't really sure she understood any of it it didn't seem to go by how much they weighed or anything. But she had figured out which ones were most and least important by themselves based on colour.

Bishop liked her job and as long as there were still perks to it she'd keep doing it, at least until her legs got sore.

Lessons

Selecting a blue crayon Bishop hummed softly to herself as she traced over the letters in her colouring book. This was a lesson, to learn the shapes of different letters both when they were big and when they were small. It wasn't, in Bishop's opinion as fun as working behind the counter but it wasn't really boring either. Colouring itself was fun and Carol would come sit with her and explain the sounds they made which was nice, there were even songs which was even better. Still, it lacked something..

Humming a sacred ceremonial song the young female shaman in training traced ancient religious symbols in the sand. She was too young to participate in any rituals as of yet but still she needed to practice so that when the time came she did not offend by making mistakes.

The down like feathers on Bishops headwings ruffled slightly in the breeze created by a nearby fan. the oscillating deice directed cool air throughout the living room keeping Bishop from overheating in the warm summer weather, especially with her laying directly in the path of sun light as she coloured. Basking in the sunlight was pleasant for the girl even if the added light made seeing a tiny bit harder.

A trip to the doctor carol had taken her to had explained this. Bishop somehow shared dna with that of birds known as owls, owls being nocturnal saw best at night. Bishop though this was sort of interesting and had become a bit more curious about owls. Carol had promised to get her book on them later.

Dark vision they called it, a gift from the gods that allowed a select few to see in the dark as if they were an animal. The young girl smiled and continued with her lesson, she was not much to look at now, but someday, someday she would be something special.

Switching to the letter Bishop grabbed a green crayon and began to trace the capital version of the letter first. A few feet away on the t.v a program about native americans and their customs played softly in the background.

Preparations

" No" Bishop shook her head fiercely and picked in agitation at the shiny red material that made up the female devil costume she was wearing. " No" she repeated. Bishop wasn't sure what exactly she wanted to be for Halloween but it certainly not this. The costume was too bright even for her and she didn't like the pitchfork that came with it. That and it just felt wrong.

~
Dear diary:

Thank the gods Halloween is only once a year. I love Bishop dearly but nearly two hours in a store looking for a costume is ridiculous. In the end we found a strange black suit with a skeleton pattern on it that even had skeletal wings. I have no idea why Bishop wanted it, or if she just chose it becuase she was also tired of shopping.

Either way she looks fairly cute in it and plans to wear it all Halloween day, while we're greeting customers and then out to trick or treating. I'm making her carry a flashlight so she's not half invisible even though she'll be right by my side the whole time. Hopefully it all goes well.

Andrea joins the family.

A cold winter wind whipped around Andrea surrounding the young girl in what seemed like a personal cyclone of snowflakes. What might be " light flurries" to a weather man safe in a studio, were a persistent irritant to the girl who couldn't escape them due to the wind and lack of buildings providing shelter while she walked. Trudging down the sidewalk the small blonde girl had instead found that the building lining the street formed a wind funnel making the situation worse.

Not, she admitted to herself , that it was as cold as it could have been and she had seen worse snowstorms before where you couldn't even see outside. Nevertheless despite the thick winter jacket she wore as well as the slush pants that worked somewhat like windbreakers; Andrea still felt the the biting cold wind and wished she could just stop and go inside. Instead she walked forward trying to get away, trying to get back home. Under her clothes the Disgrace's dog tags suddenly burned as hot as the emptiness that filled her right now. Andrea desperately wanted to just go home but the truth was she had no home, not anymore.

It had happened suddenly one night. What was left of the family, with Tiwaz at school and Tode gone, had been watching Tv in the living room when suddenly the house had melted. The walls of the house started sweating then layers of paint and drywall slid off of the frames. Paint and drywall alike liquefied rapidly and trapped them all in a strange multicoloured goo. Andrea had been able to see outside and feel the breeze from a warm fall wind but she was still trapped and no one in the neighborhood seemed like they were coming to help.

The Tv had sputtered, sparked and then given out before it too began the dissolve and as Andrea's blue eyes grew wide she reached towards her mother. The girl saw everything within the house begin to follow suit. It made no sense and for some reason she just couldn't find her voice to call for help. Riycan too seemed voiceless and instead flapped his wings fiercely and struggled to get free. Their mother however just froze and seemed to be listening to something neither of them could hear. It was only when Riycan's feathers began to pale and molt into the liquid that she found her voice spoke a single word " Ok."

Ok, the last thing Andrea had heard her mother say before the world went dark and she'd woken up in the hospital. The doctors told her she'd been found by neighbors in the remains of her collapsed house, alone. There were no signs of other survivors and practically everything had been destroyed. Only Andrea and the backpack she'd been wearing were still in one piece. The girl, traumatized and panicking was greatful at least to still have the contents of her backpack. Her plushies, her three loyal followers were all she had left in the world, all she had left to remember her family by.

In time these too had been taken from her, lost and stolen at the various group homes she'd been moved around to. Each loss ripping away at what was left of her hope until it was only the dull ache of the dogtags, a thing which could not be removed from her, that pushed her forward. The fact that she didn't know why they couldn't be removed; only that hazy images flashed in her mind anytime someone tried only served to confuse her. Still, she had to keep going, to find.. something.

Unable to bear the cold anymore the girl reached for the nearest available door handle and opened it. A small chimed sounded an warm air rushed out to greet her as if welcoming and beckoning her inside. Incapable of denying the temptation Andrea walked into the store and looked around to see where she'd landed herself.

Where did that come from?

“Mom where do the cabbages go” Bishop asked as she stared at the lone large piece of vegetation that sat on a crate of water in the backroom of the store. It must have fallen away from the rest of the cabbages it had been with. Although Bishop didn't remember the store ever having had cabbages never mind one quite so big.

Confused at her daughter's question Carol handed her only customer their change then closed the register and went to see what was going on. Perhaps Bishop's imagination had gotten to best of her at last. It was only once she opened the door to the store room and looked in that Carol froze and blinked in confusion. There was cabbage, a huge one at that sitting on a crate of water. It made no sense, where the heck had it come from.? It couldn't have just sprouted legs and walked there and Andrea was in the house napping so how did it get into the store room? Joey perhaps might have left it as a joke though Carol has no clue what it was supposed to mean.

Looking into Bishop's confused eyes carol just shook her head “ We don't sell cabbages honey” S he said and picked up the object in question. Strangely enough the outer leaves felt hard. They were the normal deep green of a cabbage and as she held the thing to her chest with one at and filled with the tip of a leaf Carol found it was pliable just harder and heavier than normal.

Carrying it back out into the store so she could examine it more thoroughly and keep an eye on any customer Carol felt a sense of familiarity come over her. She knew this, had heard about this before, giant strange cabbages.

The sweet smell of flowers wafted into her nose as Bishop skipped in front of her and suddenly it hit the woman. Kaimi , Naomi had said Kaimi came from a cabbage. There was no guarantee that this was the same type but it'd be worth the effort to make a phone call and try to find out. In the mean time she'd put it in the relative safety of the house.

“ Bishop can you take this and put it on the table. Please don't eat it or let anything bad happen to it ok? You can spray it with water like the houseplants if you want to though.” A little water probably wouldn't hurt it after all it still seemed plant like.

As soon as she was relived of the burden Carol walked back behind the store counter and reached for the phone. Time to make a call.

Shopping

Carol slowly pushed Rook's stroller through the mall with Andrea and Bishop walking beside her. They were out shopping for clothes for both Rook and Andrea. Rook because he had nothing besides the toga style robe he'd been born with and Andrea because she was just a bit bigger than bishop and almost none of the other girl's clothes fit her. Both children needed several sets of outfits, Rook needed shoes( if they could fit any to fit his strange feet and both could use some personal items for their rooms.

Rook who crawled more than he could walk at this point was being pushed because there was no way the young boy was steady enough to walk during an an entire mall trip. Each day he seemed to get a bit stronger but he wasn't yet ready. At least, Carol mused they could use the space under the stroller to carry shopping bags. The woman had learned the hard way that Bishop tended to swing bags around haphazardly if given them to hold.

“Can I go look at the animals because I don't need clothes?” Bishop asked throwing Carol a charming smile. The girl had a habit of using that smile whenever she wanted something, or was trying to keep out of trouble.

“ Sorry” Carol said shaking her head “ but you're too small, we're sticking together.” Malls were too crowded this time of year for Carol to take any chances of Bishop getting lost or grabbed. Besides it wouldn't only lead to the girl begging incessantly for a pet for the next few days.

The dark haired woman wheeled the strolled into a nearby children's clothing store. Nothing too fancy but nice durable clothes at reasonable prices. At their age Carol didn't see the point in fancy clothes on children unless it was a special event. Children were meant to play and have fun and get dirty, it made sense for their clothes to need to stand up that kind of treatment. Besides the old fashioned blue jean hadn't gone out of style yet.

~
Andrea enjoyed trying on new clothes, it made this feel more permanent because the group homes always just gave her leftover clothes to wear.new clothes were fun and the fact that she was allowed to choose her own, within reason was awesome.Since it was winter she'd have to wait to pick out things like shorts and t-shirts with funny images on them but there were still pairs of pants and some sweaters had logos the blonde girl liked.

Bishop was helping too, after figuring out what sizes Andrea wore her new sibling had made sure to help Andrea look through racks on clothes she liked for things in the right size.Every now and again the amber eyed girl would pick out something random though and show it to Andrea for approval. For the most part the two had different tastes but Bishop had found her a really cute camouflage hoody that stuck a chord with the girl.

That too was nice, having siblings again. Andrea stilled missed her brothers and sister from before, still wished every day that she could have her family back. It wasn't that she didn't like Carol or Bishop or Rook just that they could never replace the family she'd once had.

~

Bishop bounced about the store carrying clothing too and from her sister as well as to and from the change room. It wasn't as fun as trying on clothes herself but it was interesting. Winter clothing was usually soft and fuzzy and it was nice to run her hands over the fabric. Plus when she got bored the girl merely imaged herself in a giant bazaar each tall circular rack was a vendor hawking wares, trying to get her attention.

Knowing nothing about boy's clothes she couldn't really help Rook which made her a bit sad because he was her new brother and she wanted to be nice to hi. She couldn't even help pick out a winter hat for him because his head was shaped funny and a hat wouldn't fit on it.

Passing a table filled with items an idea hit the girl. She could pick out a scarf and mittens for him to wear. He'd need them for playing outside once he learned to walk better.

~

Rook sighed and whined as various clothes were put on him and then taken off again as his mother tried to find things that fit and din't make the young boy squirm. He didn't like clothes they bugged his skin and were too tights and didn't let air breath. Fussing he swung his legs back and forth while seated on a bench in the change room. The chain attached to the shackle on his left leg jingled softly as he did so.Rook found the predictable jingle oddly comforting and every now and then for no reason he would twitch that leg just to hear it .

“ Too tight,” he whined as his mother thrust him into another turtleneck.” No” he crossed his arms and looked at her crimson eyes stony as he tried to make his feelings clear. This shirt was not ok.

“ It's exactly the right size Rook it can't be too tight.” His mother argued.

Six fingers reached up to claw at the neck “ Too tight “ he repeated. It wasn't comfortable and he didn't want to wear it.

A moment later cool air caressed his chest as the shirt was removed. Better now he felt ok again.” No more” The little boy whined, curling up with his head on his knees and his tail curled around his feet.” Please.”

No, there was more and more until his mother was satisfied. At least the things he saw her buy were stuff that didn't bug him too much to wear. Still he was happy with practically no clothing on at all to be honest. Although he sort of liked the ankle socks and matching mittens Bishop had picked out. He'd whined when she tried to add a scarf though, he didn't like constricting clothes at all.

~

Carol found that bedroom shopping was so much easier than clothes shopping for children. First she'd gotten things for Rook's room, which Nickle had come over to help with earlier than planned. She'd rush ordered a bed that he could grow into, some other furniture and a toy chest that would be delivered at the end of the day.

Rook had picked out simple blue sheets and blankets avoiding anything with a pattern. Though he had looked at her pleadingly for a child sized body pillow which she'd given in and got him.it was the sort in which heat packs could be placed which might help keep the boy warm on particularly cold nights.

Andrea had been a bit fussier being older and having a more definite sense of what she did and did not like. Fortunately the girl didn't mind the furniture already available in the guest room. She had simply wanted to be able to choose a comforter of her own, along with pillow cases and a lamp so she could read at night before bed and not have to get up and be cold to turn off the light.

All three children had been promised toys soon enough after all Christmas was coming. That and carol knew hours could be spent looking for just the right doll and all of the kids had started to get a bit grumpy. Instead she'd offered them lunch at the food court and an ice cream cone each for dessert. That had brightened everyone's spirits and the shoppign trip was overall a success.
