Kisala bounded to and fro, writing things down on a piece of paper. Her mother was further away with Ajiiel in the stroller. She'd been given a list of facts to find out regarding each of the animals and was hastily gathering them all. So far, she'd made it past the monkeys, but she still had a loooong way to go.

"Mama, mama! I'm going to go to the house of birds next!"

" Wake up, please" Bishop stared beseechingly up at the sleeping avian as she pleaded with it show some sign of consciousness. The bird in question, a barn owl remained asleep on it's perch ignorant of the girl's request.

From a few feet away in the gigantic bird sanctuary Carol kept an eye on her daughter while watching a black swan preen.

Kisala bounded up next to the little girl, eying the bird.
"She looks a little like you!" she smiled at the other,
"at least, she's got some feathers like you do."

She searched for the little placard that had information about barn owls on it. She most definitely had a question about them on her list somewhere!

Having been focused on trying to wake the sleeping bird Bishop started when the older girl began to speak to her. Slowly she smiled and Bishop reached up to tough the soft downy feathers of her head wings. " I like feathers." Though half the time the young girl seemed to forget she even had them, they were such a natural part of her.

" Why is he sleeping?" Surely the older girl should know why such a strange behavior was occurring.

Kisala tilted her head thoughtfully, reading the placard,
"Wellll...this says that owls are 'nocturnal'. Mama says that means they sleep during the day and are awake at night...so, that's why he's sleeping!"

The older girl wondered briefly what it'd be like to be nocturnal. Ajiiel practically was. But Kisala was pretty sure Ajii just stayed up a lot at night crying 'cause it kept Mama from sleeping and she liked to do things like that.

Bishop pouted " But I wanted to see him do something." It wasn't fair, things shouldn't be allowed to sleep when Bishop wanted to see them. Although Bishop wondered if that meant that the owl was like her, able to see better in the dark than the light. She didn't even need a night light to find the bathroom when she had to go at night.

" Look a magic bird" Bishop mood lifted as a strange bird in a large pen spread it's tail and revealed the eyes it had hidden there. Bishop stared hard trying to catch it blinking.

Kisala looked at the bird, reading the plaque there,
"Oohh! That's called a pea..peac...peacock!" She told the littler girl, giggling.
"It had pretty feathers, too!"

She liked birds well enough, 'cause they could fly. She wished -she- could fly. But, one day she'd make her own spaceship and sail to the clouds!

Bishop was mesmerized both by the eye feathers and the peacocks general body which seemed to shine an unnatural bright blue. None of the other birds were shiny looking. Bishop was convinced this peacock was magical. " I want those feathers." If she got those she'd have a magic flower and magic feathers.

The flower in question, a gift from her friend Kaimi, hung around her neck in a special molded case that formed around the flower but had air hole that allowed the sweet soothing scent the blossom produced to continue to filter out into the air.

Kisala giggled,
"Well, I wouldn't jump in there. It might bite you or something," she said, "Maybe you can find some of its feathers somewhere else."

Kisala knew about magical things; her mother had magical tattoos, and she herself glowed-- presumably by magic-- every so often for some unknown reason. She still didn't think the peacocks were magical, though. It would've said something on the little sign.

She was growing bored of looking at them, and so directed her attention instead to the entryway next to their enclosure. This was one of those big open areas where the birds could flit about around you when you walked in. Kisala liked the idea of that, and so pointed it out,
"If we go in there, we can walk around with the birds!" she told the other girl.

Bishop didn't think birds had any teeth to bite her with but if the older girl said so it was probably true. The idea of getting hurt was not appealing not even for a magical feather. She'd just have to be patient and find another safer way to get one like the other girl suggested.

" Let's go." Any place where Bishop could was actually got and touch the bird or get closer, without being bit, seemed like a good place to be. Plus there would probably be feathers in there on the ground. Her amber eyes gleamed with excitement at the idea

Hearing the girl's plan and not wanting Bishop too far out of her site Carol headed towards the enclosure as well. This could be a fun experience as long as no one got bird droppings on them.

Kisala led the younger girl towards the bird sanctuary, pushing aside the long plastic pieces that swept the floor so they could walk in.

It was a little warm, like the butterfly house, with birds fluttering about in brilliant colours around them. Most of the birds were far away from the area they could walk in, but Kisala leaned over the edge of the 'bridge' going around it and reached towards a pretty blue bird,
"Heeeeeeeere birdybirdy!"

Inside the bird sanctuary Bishop was even more alert that usual, there were so many birds and they were all making different chirps and churs and whistles. Agile, feathered blurs of all sizes and colours flitted about the sky below the ceiling as if they owned it.

Bishop watched curiously as the other girl tried to charm a nearby bird sporting brilliant blue plumage. Personally she thought you should try and talk to it in bird speak but then again the older girl probably knew better than Bishop did, for one she could read and Bishop couldn't.

The bird fluttered away from Kisala, and the older girl pouted, then turned back to Bishop,
"I wonder what they're saying?" she asked, looking at the littler girl, "They make lots of pretty noises. Can you talk like a bird?"

Something about the girl's birdlike appearance had Kisala convinced she was part bird or something. The way Ajiiel was part lizard and part EVIL.

Bishop shook her head then paused" well sorta" Bishop squished her lips into a circle and breathed out in a fast and semi steady stream producing a warbly whistle that vaughly sounded like a bird call. " I don't speak bird though." She admitted sadly. Wouldn't it be nice if she could know what birds said? Then she could listen to them talk about all the far away places they flew, places filled with magic and adventure.

"Awww, that sucks," Kisala said-- sad more because Bishop seemed sad than because she was actually disappointed. The girl then shook her head as though shaking away the negative thoughts,
"We can still look and see how pretty they are, though!" she assured the littler girl,
"Lookit that pretty brown one over there. He's got some red on his belly, too!"

It seemed they had some more common varieties of birds as well as the more exotic in the bird haven, and Kisala bounded down the path a bit,
"I think I seen one of them at the Temple before!"
