August had a headache. Sure, it was slight, but its very existence gave him all the excuse he needed to pout. He didn't want to be here, but all of the mental suggestion in the world hadn't stopped his stubborn father from bringing him anyway. It wasn't that the daycare center didn't seem like a nice enough place - actually it was quite well-appointed and the adults August had seen were brusque but caring - it just wasn't home.
He sat with his arms crossed on the floor, staring at a pile of colorful letter blocks and wishing his eyes would suddenly gain the ability to shoot lasers.

Bishop sat on the floor hovering protectively over a toy cash register as if her life depended on it. The small plastic toy was all she had that reminded her of being back at the store. Bishop really liked the store and her job there. She didn't see why she had to be here, she got to see lots of people at the store, why did she have to come here to meet people.
Her eyes darted back and forth as the young girl watched the other children and pressed buttons on the register. She'd settle down soon enough but for now she was sticking with what she knew.

In August's imagination, the blocks had long since melted into a sticky, steaming puddle of blackened plastic. It was really too bad that his destruction wasn't reality-based. He turned his attention outward in an uncharacteristically pushy act resulting from extreme boredom, rudely searching for someone's thoughts to read. Most of the time he was too weak to get anything off of anyone who wasn't family, but every so often... There!
A big blond kid was making his way across the playroom floor, headed toward a nearby feathery girl who was playing with a cash register. All August had gleaned were impressions of want and play, but from the way the boy was moving and the greedy look on his face, August was pretty sure he knew what was coming. He pushed to his feet and tried to hurry to the girl's side without making it look like he was doing so.
"Um. Hi," he said, plopping down next to Bishop, his voice soft and eyes wide as he looked around to see if the other kid was still approaching.

Bishop's hands gripped the register tighter as a boy came over and sat beside her. " Hi 'm Bishop." She was going to be friendly but she wasn't ready to share just yet.
She did find the boy interesting though, he had green hair with an orange patch that was just a bit darker than her own hair colour. She pulled a few plastic coins from the register and dropped them in his lap " Here."
The boy who's mind August had read narrowed his eyes and clenched pudgy little fist together while stomping past and heading towards another boy who was making a play-dough castle.

Thankful the other boy didn't seem interested in Bishop's toy now that there were two kids to get through to get it, August relaxed a bit. He picked up the coins she had given him and turned them over in his hands. "Thanks." He knew he couldn't keep them, but he slipped them into the pocket of the light jacket he wore.
"Where'd you get those?" August asked, his gaze flicking to Bishop's wings. "They're cool." If he was going to make the effort to be social, he might as well get something out of it. Maybe his father would buy him a wing headband out of guilt for leaving him here. Doubtful, but fun to think about in any case.

Bishop shrugged " Dun remember." As far as Bishop knew she'd always had her head wings but again it was possible their origin was hidden behind the fuzzy images that she didn't really remember. All she knew as that a lot of people seemed to be interested in them and she'd only seen a few other people who had them so far. Maybe she was special a rare type of person who had wings that sprouted from their head.
The little girl smiled and reached out to touch the boy' s orange path of hair " Is nice" Bishop's hair was all one colour and she envied the boy she one stray section of colour, maybe that was what made him special.

August's eyes followed Bishop's hand as she reached up and touched his hair. He smiled a small smile. "Thanks," he said again. No one had ever told him his hair was nice before. As far as he knew, it was just hair. It was different from his father's, so August assumed it had come from whoever his other parent was. August's mother, or whatever, was quite maligned in the thoughts of his family, his father and aunt in particular, but somewhere deep inside, the boy still possessed an urge to find out who or what she was.
"What're you doing?" he asked, his voice still quiet. He reached back into his pocket and took out the plastic money. "Wit' these."

Bishop looked at the plastic coins in the boy's hand and smiled " That's change, you get it it when you pay too much." The young girl looked thoughtful for a moment. " We could play, you could buy things from me." Not that Bishop had anything to sell for real but they could pretend and it would be fun.

"Mm." He knew all about change. People gave it to him sometimes, old ladies and his sister mostly, but he had never really found anything he wished to buy that wasn't purchased for him by someone else. All of the shiny silvery and bronzey circles he had collected sat in a glass pig in Brownie's room, where he still slept.
August shrugged in a sort of noncommittal agreement. Why would anyone want to play at buying things? Well, anything was worth trying once, especially things that didn't immediately frighten him. "Okay. What kind of store is this?"

Bishop looked thoughtful then grinned " It's a magic store we have potions and fairy dust and wish paper." She smiled and grabbed some nearby unused toys that in her mind resembled the objects she had named. " They do dif'rent stuff." she warned him firmly. You had to chose the right one or who knew what would happen.

Well, that was a much better idea than any he'd had! August smiled. "I want some fairy dust." He held out one of his coins. "What does it do?" Apparently he was full of questions about this make-believe store.

Bishop handed over a small plastic hourglass , the white sand inside shifting about as she handed it to the boy. " It grants you a wish if you sprinkle it on yourself. but you have to believe in it or it doesn't work." As she took the coins Bishop wondered what the strange haired boy might wish for.

August took the hourglass, rolling it back and forth in his hands and watching the sand sparkle and change color under the dingy fluorescent lights. He realized that his headache was almost gone and looked up with a small smile. Magic sand. When he looked back down again, the grains were pale and plain again. He didn't have anything to wish for just then, nor did he want to play at cracking open an hourglass that didn't belong to him, so he nodded and put it aside.
"Do you have any spells that make people fly?"

Spells? Bishop didn't know any spells she wasn't a magic user, that was Kaimi's job. .. Of course that was it. Carefully Bishop removed the pendant that hung around her neck and handed it to her customer " breath in the magic flower smell and think of wings" she instructed" They won't last very long but I promise it works." It worked for her anyways, anytime she needed magic she just smelled the flower that had come from Kaimi.

"It's nice," August said. The flower's fragrance had reached him well before Bishop's pendant touched his hand. He closed his eyes and breathed again. He thought of wings. Nothing happened. Still, it was nice. He didn't need to try to read her mind to see that the pendant was important to her, so when he put it aside with the things he was 'buying' he did so gently. "Cool. Where'd you get it from?"
