...Finding...
4th of March

Mia looked back and forth. The coast was clear as far as she could see. Her hand rested on the soft soil as she shut her eyes and waited a moment. The tremors of hooves were feint. Good. They were still a distance off.

Mia was one of Aimes’ fruit gatherers, the few, the brave, and the female. The crisp air was a sign that it was apple season, and being a favored fruit of the city folks, the fruit gatherers had to make more frequent trips into the forest. It was risky, but it was a good living for a woman all by herself.

Certain that the tremors were getting fainter Mia stood up and climbed over the stump she had been hiding behind. She was short in stature. Very short. In fact she was often accused of being only a child. But she didn’t let that stop her. Her highly sensitive ears, which were slightly pointed, partnered with her short and small body made her perfect for gathering fruit. She could easily hide, and climb.

The downside was that she couldn’t carry much, in fact this was her fifth time in the forest today, and was pushing it. She raced towards the near by apple tree and jumped, her bag on her back. Easily catching the branch she pulled herself up into the leaves of the tree. At least she wouldn’t be caught here, unless a stampede came by and shook her out.

Quickly she pulled and tugged and loosened ripe apples from their place in the tree, being sure to grab nice ones that the local insects hadn’t gotten to yet, or at least didn’t seem to have gotten to. She grabbed and put the treasures delicately into her sack as to not bruise them. At least they didn’t need to be as carefully handled as grapes.

Suddenly, in effort to grab more fruit, she felt her hand grasp a cold glass like item. So shocked her let go of it and saw it tumble to the grown, landing on the soft soil. It was such a pretty bottle, with many colors swirling within it.

Certain that she had enough fruit as it was Mia climbed down to the ground and picked up the bottle. It was certainly a nice piece of work, and whatever was in it had to be powerful. Mia didn’t want to take the bottle, fearful that it would upset the keepers of the forest. She didn’t even know what was within it.

However it was just so beautiful that something in her had grown attached to it. Not thinking further she sat it in her apple sack and snuck out of the forest, more carefully than she had snuck in, fully aware of the treasure in her possession.

...Swirls...
6th of March

“Morning bottle thi-.” Mia started and stopped upon seeing the blue swirls moving around the outside of the bottle. “No good. No good no good.” She quickly threw on her tunic and a belt. Grabbing her hair tie from the desk she pulled her short hair back into a pony tail before rushing over to the bottle.

She had feared this. She figured the mist looking stuff was some sort of curse of the Whi forest for taking it. But then again, she had been sleeping… She stepped foreword and risked a finger to eternal damnation as she poked the multi colored stuff.

Nothing happened… beyond the stuff separating from where her finger was.

“Interesting…” Mia muttered as she mentally checked off ‘curse’ from her list of possibilities. She lifted up the bottle and looked around. The substance appeared to be swirling about, while a lighter color streamed up into the sky…she giggled. Now that was outrageous. Wings? The mist making wings… funny.

She sat down the bottle. Today she needed to fetch more apples for market. But she wasn’t sure if she wanted to leave the bottle here for potential thieves to pick up, put it into her safe, or take it with her.

She cut up an apple she had kept for herself, and cut a slice of a loaf of bread. With water this made a modest breakfast. Her usual. She munched on the apple slices as she pondered what to do with the poor bottle. She supposed that putting it in the safe in the rafters would be the safest place. But she didn’t want to risk the fumes or whatever they were over taking anything else in there. Maybe under her bed?

The large boxes that made up the structure for her simple bed could be opened to hide things, like her clothes, and some interchangeable possessions. Boxes breathed, and with her long covers over them no thief had yet to take from them.

The bell tower rang, announcing the arrival of working time. She no longer had the luxury to think about it. She put away the bread in her bread box and finished her water. Then lifting the bottle she slipped it into one of the crates under her bed. It would be safe for now.

She let her covers fall back over as she stood to put on her sandals and grab her sack for fruit. Today would be just another day she told herself as she locked up her house and left for the Whi Forest.

...Inspection...
10th of March

It was dark when Mia returned home, an empty bag in hand. She collapsed on her bed, too tired to even turn on the fire lamps. Today she had earned more than she normally did. It took an extra trip into the forest and a run to the market, but she did it. It was that time of year when she had to start saving part of her earnings to make it though till the next season.

After lying down for a bit Mia sat back up and walked over to each of the four fire lamps and lit them. Being able to see easier she went back over to her bed and got the bottle out from its place in the crate. Amazingly, she noted, the swirls did not fill the crate but simply swirled the bottle. This meant these were the same swirls.

She brought the bottle over to the table as she lit the fire in her fire pit at the center of the hut for warmth, and for cooking. She fetched a carrot and a potato, with some onion and meat she had bought at market today. Adding water she set the handle of the pot to its hanging place over the pit to heat.

She then sat down in front of the bottle and looked at it. It was such a peculiar thing to be sitting in a tree. With its shape it must have been perched just so not to fall. She dared a poke to the top of the bottle where the stopper was.

If she wasn’t scared of being cursed with some random curse she would have opened it by now. Not that she had tried to see if it was possible… she simply didn’t risk it. The blue swirls and the lighter blue wing like swirls were slightly weird.

Mia wondered what would happen if she returned the bottle back to the tree… would the swirls go away? Where they some kind of warning that the bottle was removed from the tree? Or maybe the swirls were due to a crack in the bottle caused by her grabbing it from the tree?

She picked up the bottle and looked and felt all over, the swirls innocently weaving in and around her hands. There were no cracks. She sat it down. Maybe tomorrow she would take it back to the tree to see. Who knows what would happen? Then again tomorrow no one was allowed in the forest for holiday.

She could wait. Maybe a few more days would reveal was it was exactly.

The soft aroma of her cooking food drew Mia from the bottle to fetch out her bowl and spoon before she checked to make sure that her stew was not burning.

...Deciding...
14th of March

Mia looked up through the hole in her roof at the stars above. Tonight was the celebration of the year and here she was, lying on a mat over her fire pit, star gazing as she waited for something…anything to happen with the bottle.

Not that she would go to the party. The celebration was a lot of merry making yes…but it is also an excuse for people to spend heaps of money and merchants to sell useless junk under the guise of merry making.

Mia simply had no money to waste, and most of the fun was in fact that you could get cool things to play with or buy the opportunity to play. With no money the festival got old very fast; especially with no one to go with.

She focused again on the stars they were so clear, and no beautiful. It was amazing the expanse you could see from the ground on such a clear night. It was so powerful… so beautiful that she would find herself drifting off into it and losing time as she just looked. Kind of weird, but still.

What her mind was focused on tonight wasn’t the stars, or the galaxy or even the festival. It was the silly bottle. What would it do next…when would it do it… Did she need to do anything? Stupid bottle.

As the moon came into view Mia finally decided that tomorrow, she’d bring the bottle back to the forest.

...Sable...
16th of March - Mia

Mia watched the over active bottle closely. Ever since it shimmered momentarily the swirls seemed to have gone into over drive, and the bottle was warm. This would be something she would be obligated to tell that Lan person she met. But her excuse for now was that it was far too late to make a house call. Tomorrow she would bring the bottle over and tell him of what she found out. For now she went to sleep, forgetting that she left the bottle on the table instead of storing it like she usually did.

The night passed quickly, Mia was so tired from running around the Whi forest that her body begged for the rest. By the time the daylight shinned in Mia’s eyes to wake her up for yet another exciting day of sneaking and fetching apples, she realized something was wrong.

She sat up, stretched and tried to run her hand through her hair, only to be met with hoards of knots. She screamed. Her hair was a wreck, yes, but what scared her more was the fact that someone or something had done this to her. She looked around her rather small home and saw no one. Great, she thought and got up and got dressed, she would have to cut her hair down to where the knots stopped.

Mia walked over to the kitchen to get her scissors for the job, and then proceeded to walk over to the table in order to sit down. It was then that she noticed the bottle was gone. Mia instantly put the scissors down and raced to look under her bed and around the house muttering “Where is it?” to herself over and over.

“Where is what?” A smaller, higher pitched voice answered back; her words slurred and not fully pronounced, as if they were spoken by a small girl. Mia snapped her head in the direction of the sound and saw a small girl, with lavender hair that was kept very short with the exception of two curls in front, long ears, and a pair of wings…that looked oddly familiar.

The girl was standing in the door way, her pink dress waving in the wind, the pinkish red ribbon around her neck flying back and forth across the wings, as if it was caressing them. She looked all pink and almost like something made wholly of sweets, except for her black laced stockings, which clashed with everything else she was wearing.

The girl looked so odd that Mia just sat there looking at her for a moment and it wasn’t until the girl tilted her head to the side that Mia snapped out of her revive. “My bottle, give it back please.” Mia stood and held out her hand. The girl was only slightly smaller than Mia when she stood, but they looked to be about the same age, which meant that the girl in front of her was only a child.

“What bottle?” The girl asked, as she took began to look around, as if something around her would help her understand what item this lady was looking for.

“The bottle that was on the table, it is pink and blue and purple, with swirls outside of it. The one that was there until I woke up this morning with knots in my hair!”

“There wasn’t a bottle there when I got here.” The girl replied, “I’ve been here most of the night, and I would know I woke up on that table.” She explained in her simple speech where the words weren’t entirely clear, “And since you wouldn’t wake up I braided your hair… do you like it?” She smiled and put her hands behind her back and beamed as if proud of what she had done.

“You?” Mia whispered, getting angry, “You did this?” she shouted and pointed to her hair. The girl’s eyes went wide and the sad as she began to whimper before she seemed to vanish in a sparkling mist. But she didn’t vanish, Mia realized as she looked closely at the odd purplish butterfly that was now racing to hide behind her spice rack. The girl had shrunk.

What was she … some strange creature from the Dark Forest? She sighed, whatever the girl was she felt that it was probably best not to anger a magic user. “I’m sorry, I like it, I just can’t brush it now.” She spoke sweetly, trying to lure the girl out.

“No you don’t you hate it!” a much tinier voice accused, as the small girl curled up behind the spices.

Mia sighed, “Look I’m sorry, I’m just not used to people touching my hair or being in my home when I wake up.” She apologized, “Why don’t you come out and return to normal size so that we can start over? How does that sound?” Mia could see the girl nod and flutter out before returning to normal size. “My name is Mia Tudor.”

“I’m Sable… I think…” The girl responded then curtsied, “I don’t remember anything, but I remember waking up on that table.” She explained.

Then a weird though occurred to Mia. Although she was certain this wasn’t the fact, she could check with Lan later, but what if, just maybe this girl who stood in front of her, who put knots in her hair…was the bottle?

“It is nice to meet you Sable.” Mia smiled, “You are welcome to stay with me if you like? I need to head to work soon but while you help me unbraid my hair so that I can get ready, why don’t you tell me what you do know about yourself?” She suggested.

“Sure!” Sable skipped over to stand behind Mia and began to work at un knotting the knots she had made.

Mia wasn’t sure what would happen next, but if the bottle did turn into this little girl, she guessed that she was now responsible for her. She also began to think of how to begin to tell Lan the next time she saw him.

...Silver...
24th of March - Sable

Sable waited as Mia got ready and did her morning routine. She would dress, groom, eat, and leave. Since she usually rose after Sable, the bottle child had the flexibility to not only get dressed at her own pace without fear of being watched, but also to fix herself anything she wanted to eat. Before, when Mia would rise before Sable, Sable found herself stuck eating whatever Mia had prepared for her.

Sable hated to see food tossed, so she would eat it regardless of her preference. However, since she figured out this new trick, Sable found that she could enjoy the finer foods, like honey... on everything.

This day was like the few before, and Sable finally felt that she was beginning to adjust to living with this woman. Trust her? Maybe not fully yet, but she was kin kinda. Sable didn't mind. She admired what Mia did with her life, living simply and fetching crop every day in a dangerous forest. Sable thought that it would be fun to tag along, like an adventure. But according to Mia the woods where "no place for children"

Which Sable was. She was a small innocent...well not so innocent, child. Instead, like any reasonable guardian, Mia gave Sable chores to do every day to keep her occupied, in the house and safe while she was away working. Not that Sable actually stayed inside most of the time. But she would always finish her chores so Mia was never the wiser.

One of Sable's many chores was to pick up after herself. She could toss around anything at anytime of the day and leave it like that, but the next day she would have to clean it all up, no matter how hard. This included everything from getting the house filthy by attempting to cook, to simply folding and putting away her possessions.

Like her earrings, scarf, top skirt stockings and shoes.

This morning started out normally. Sable was spooning out honey onto some fruit while Mia got herself out of bed to get dressed. However instead of the normal, quiet ritual, Mia instead slipped on something and went flying.

Shocked Sable stood and went over to her "You ok?" She asked, her speech still sounding under developed.

"Fine fine," Mia assured the girl before she picked up a small item from the floor, "Although if you picked up your earrings like I asked, I wouldn't be sitting here like this." Mia was about to hand the gold and silver ball earring back to its owner when she paused. Then drew it back to inspect, "Odd, I always thought these were made from metal." She mused, giving sable back her earring.

"I don't like Silver, or any metal, they feel as though they are biting your skin off." Sable explained to Mia as she put her missing earring on. She has been wondering where it had fallen to.

Mia looked back at the girl for a moment and considered her before shrugging off any thoughts that had tried to enter her head. She finished getting ready and as she prepared breakfast she could only wonder what would prompt a kid to say something like that...

...Lavender...
11th of April- Sable

Lavender. Sable turned her body slightly to the left. Lavender. To the right. More lavender. She looked deep into her own eyes. Dark, but still Lavender. She leaned down to inspect the strands of her hair. Lavender.

It wasn't that Sable hated the color. She honestly loved it. In fact she adored the shades of her hair color. But seeing ones self in a monotone color all the time...got drab. Not that it was. Her "lavender" was blue tinted, but all the same. She sighed. She turned around completely. Her wings, her stockings, Blue and black.

Oh well. At least she wasn't completely monotone. She smiled, and feeling better about her appearance she went out into the town. Mia was at work in the forest, so Sable wouldn't be missed. She skipped along the path and as she did, a great idea came to her, so great that is made her giggle.

She did a little shopping. She got a bowl she got some dye, it was a bright fuchsia. She picked up a water bottle and some string. She smiled to each clerk and began to set up what she considered her best idea for the day.

She waited.

Sable was behind a crate and hiding. She had a large grin on her face, so much that anyone who noticed her would immediately know the dust child was up to no good. However it was far to common place for Sable that no one bothered caring anymore, and left her to her work. They realized right off that if they tried to stop one of her "projects" they'd be on the receiving end of another.

The girl in the building that Sable eyed so closely was such an interloper. She had spoiled a great and complex device with an egg that Sable had set up to hit a man who refused to sell anything to her. The girl had told the man before, thus ruining it all.

So, when the girl opened the door to her house, as Sable had observed for weeks, She triggered a bit of rope with flipped the dye/water mixture onto the girls head. Effectively dying the girls top half bright pink.

Sable stifled a giggle and hid more as she enjoyed her laugh, before turning tiny and flying home.

Task complete.
