Sable walked into town again today like she had for the past week. Mia told her that it was her job to buy the food for the day, as well as to get to know the city. Thus, everyday Sable would walk into the city from near the edge of Whi Forest. It was a decent walk, about five minutes. Sable had in fact grown used to it, unlike some other aspects of the city. See walking was no problem, buying was no problem, but Sable was decidedly getting annoyed with two particular boys who kept bugging her every time she entered the market.
At first it was no big deal. Sable knew she was different, and so did everyone else. So she could easily ignore comments like “Look she has wings… I wonder if she can fly?” or “See those ears? That is not a normal shape!” Most of these comments were from just about everyone. But everyone stopped almost as soon as they started. It took one, maybe two times saying it, or talking about it near her for them to get it out of their systems. Now everyone treated her like she was just another kid, almost everyone that is. Sable didn’t even know the two boy’s names. But they just couldn’t stop bothering her…
What was worse was the fact that they seemed to be getting meaner. Sable was up for a prank or two but it was seriously getting bad. So bad that today, Sable considered skipping her normal entry point into the market for another one, or maybe shrinking down and flying in. But Mia has said specifically not to do that. For a child it was frustrating. She was small she was weak and she couldn’t do anything to get back at those two no matter how much she wanted to! For the last day or so, they wouldn’t just call her a name, or pick on her. They started to grab her wings and tug on them to “see if they came off” They would trip her so they could see “if she could float”. Not that her wings would ever detach despite not being fully attached to her back anyway, or that she could fly being the size she was for her wings. But they didn’t care. Sable was their own personal source of entertainment. Today wouldn't be any different she suspected.

As she approached the market she did so while keeping well out of sight. While she appeared unnoticeable she glanced around for the terrible duo. It didn’t take her long, after all her route was pretty stable and they seemed to have figured it out ages ago. Standing in front of the bakery they were talking and laughing amongst themselves, probably plotting ways to do her in. Sable wondered if the bakery had a back door. Sighing she knew that she would have to get bread now or deal with Mia later. Out of her choices, Mia was far scarier than the bullies.
She walked up to the store as if it were any other day and tried her best to keep her cool, she avoided eye contact and walked straight foreword as to enter the store. What was odd was that they didn’t say a sound. Regardless she looked and focused on the door, that was until she felt her toe snag on something. With her pace being as fast as it was, along with nothing to catch onto, Sable found herself flying through the air only to realize a second later that she had dirt in her mouth. Frustrated, angry and all together not happy Sable glared at the two and though of how much like jackasses they were…

But it seemed that no matter how much she wished it, both boys just stood there standing and laughing at her misfortune. All the people around just walked around her, or past her like they didn't even notice. Sable had no idea what she could do. She felt so utterly powerless that she stood up, with dirt in her hands and threw it at both of them. "You cowards." She accused them, "If you want to fight so badly join the other men in combat. Picking on me seems hardly honorable-"
"But its so darn hilarious freak!" They called back.
"Well if it is humor you are looking for..." Sable picked up two of the pies on the cart near where she fell and walked over to the boys and placed both pies upside down on their heads, "Then why don't you go home and look in the mirror, because you both look funny to me." She turned around, paid the woman with the pie stand for the pies and then proceed to go on with her route. Although she wasn't sure she could still buy all she needed to, after purchasing the useless pies.
She wasn't bothered after that, in fact both boys would probably never forget the number of people laughing as they past them by in the market.
- End -
