Silence. The dead air sharpened the smallest sounds… yet noting. Mia touched the ground as she took shallow almost no existent breaths slow and far in between. She wasn’t supposed to be here. She knew that the patrol had said no one into the forest today. That it was too risky.

But here she was, and she wasn’t leaving until she found that tree. However there in lied the problem. There were well over a hundred apple trees in the grove. And Mia could not for the life of her remember which one. So as she climbed the fifteenth tree that day she cursed her poor memory.

She lifted the bottle up into the air in each tree… for no effect. She seriously wondered whether or not this would actually do anything, or if she was wasting her time. She really thought the latter and as she slid down that tree and felt the ground before climbing the next she swore that this would be the last tree she climbed.

Only to find herself still climbing trees an hour later. She felt silly. But the swirls seemed to like it. So if the swirls liked it…. She hit her cheek softly and cursed at herself wondering what had come over herself to be thinking such thoughts.

The last tree of the day, she thought over and over partially as a mantra and also as a reminder not to forget that she wasn’t going to be climbing any more trees. Why? It was insane of course. The danger today was higher then usual. Why? She didn’t know, the guards just said so.

As she lifted the glass bottle up into the sky, with no effect yet again she frowned and drew the bottle back to her self; only to miss a branch and send the bottle out of her hands and onto the ground. Great. Mai practically flew out of the tree, begging, hoping that the bottle was still in one piece.

She looked all around the tree. Nothing. It must have rolled. She though and she got on her knees, careful of sound and injuring any plants that might anger the equine keepers of this wood.

Her bottle sure rolled far, under and past a bush in fact right into a circle of rocks. She saw it do something weird just then. It sparkled. Then it stopped. How odd. Mai sighed and went to fetch the bottle. That was enough for today.

She took great care in exiting the forest and returning home.
