Well, the cue to leave might have been when one of the 'dolls' literally jumped up and bit at Christian, but yeah, yeah it was time to leave the spooky attic. All the time they'd spent up there, Jun hadn't been able to figure out how the dolls were doing it. No sign of animatronics, no telltale noise or wires. "Yeah, sounds good."
When they had both stepped off the stairs onto the landing, the door to the attic slowly slid shut. Jun moved straight for the main stairs, then to the ones to the basement. The basement steps were unexpectedly sturdy -Jun had been expecting the usual slatted ones for basements. Of course, he thought too soon. They weren't even halfway down when there was a loud clunk and below their feet the steps rotated into a flat slide down. "Hh!" His feet skidded a few inches down before he reacted, slapping his palms against the wall to either side and pushing. The force gave him enough time to angle his feet, and just enough to keep from sliding down in an ungraceful heap.
"You- okay- ?" he huffed out. The constant pushing with his arms made his chest tight. Breathing was difficult and speaking even more so. This would be fine though, they could just go one at a time, controlled slides. The floor would probably be soft somehow to prevent injury. He'd have to go first, since he was in front of- "Oh for <********> sake," he grunted. There, at the bottom of the stairs, was the <******** grimer. It waved hello.

Julie tilted her head to the side, letting her hair fall like a curtain behind her as she listened to Esben, patient, but looking like she still wasn't quuuiiiite sure whether to be impressed. She scrunched up her nose, but grinned toothily at his claim, giggling. "No it's not!"] she declared, moving to set Flef down, then running over to wrap her hands about a corn stalk. After a few heaves and grunts of effort, she stepped back, pouting, but hopped up and snatched two of the large leaves instead, ripping them off, and running back to hand one to Esben with a grin. "You just gotta start attackin' when ya say it!" she explained, before puffing out her chest, and brandishing the floppy foliage like a blade. "I am Julie!" she declared, making a childish jousting movement as she leaped forward with imprecise fencing posture, "Valiant warrior of pokemons!" She leaped forward once more, again swinging at Esben. "The brave and beautiful!" One more hop with a jab of her 'blade'. "Defender of Flefs!" She grinned again, dropping her arm at the end of the declaration, looking more than proud of herself.
She dropped the leaf and went back over to pick Flef up, shrugging to Esben's question. "Stories 'n stuff! My mom 'n Torry would tell me 'em, and I've seen a lotta movies with my dad!" she explained simply. Her expression crunched up in confusion and she tilted her head. "Who's 'Eskil'?" she asked. She relaxed and listened with some interest as Esben defended his ability to slay dragons, a more relaxed, childish smile crossing her face instead. "Hehe! Yeah! Teach me how to fight, Esben, slayer of dragons!" she cheered, bouncing up and down excitedly. She calmed a bit as they continued to walk, though. "How come ya wanna fight dragons so badly, anyway?" she asked curiously.

Esben’s gaze narrowed at Julie as she proclaimed that her substitute war cry was totally not too long, squinting at her as she rushed off and struggled with the corn. As she went about her display to prove that the war cry could work, he watched with the highest level of scrutiny that a nine-year old could manage, face contorting in confusion and uncertainty.
"Ehhh…," he frowned and huffed, seeming to think about it a bit more before shaking his head. "Why you jumpin’ around so much? Yer gonna fall and get eaten!" He piped up. "No warrior has time to keep yellin’ like that during fighting! That’s just silly!" He placed his hands on his hips, "It’s not the worst war cry… I guess if you work on it, it’d be okay," he thumbed under his nose, "mine is still better though!"
"Oooh… stories! Like what?" His eyes lit up a bit in excitement. He liked stories and it sounded like Julie had some under her metaphorical belt. Esben blinked though, briefly stopping in his steps as she asked him about Eskil, immediately throwing his hands in the air. "He’s my cousin! One of tha’ best warriors of my clan! Right after my sister of course, they know all about bein’ warriors and dragon slaying! I’ve learned everything from them!" He announced proudly, beaming with delight. That grew even more as he took Julie’s remark as 100% serious, pumping his fists in the air. "I will! We’ll make you a warrior yet Julie the Brave!" He could give her that much of her title.
Esben simmered down a bit at the question, a somber tone taking over as his expression grew serious. "Because I have too! They attack my clan and that’s what warriors must do! If we don’t fight’em then they eat us!" He held his hands up at the sides of his head to mimic a dragon, giving a low growl and looking as terrifying as he could. "You don’t want to be eaten by a dragon! It’s the worst fate of all! That’s why we gotta fight them." He dropped his hands, looking thoughtfully at Julie, reminded of his conversation with Huey and how the other boy seemed equally curious why he was so against the scaley monsters. "Do you not have to worry about dragons too?"

Julie looked a bit disheartened and pouted some as Esben seemed less than impressed at her fighting demonstration. She could too survive like that... If she was good enough! A good fighter could multitask! She didn't bother arguing this, though, and instead just picked up Flef, looking at Esben as he deemed it "acceptable", essentially, before shrugging. "I guess I'll haveta do more acompishments to get a better war cry than you," she decided teasingly, a sly little smile on her face.
She shrugged again as he asked about the stories she'd heard about, smiling lightly while she pet Flef's fur. "I unno, stories! Y'know, of soldiers and fighters, 'n warriors defending their land 'n stuff! Saving people from dangerous pokemons, and fighting alongside their pokemon comrades, taking up arms to use blade alongside flame and flight! Stuff like that! S'really cool pictures in some of the books, too!" she explained, her eyes lighting up with excitement as she explained, and memories of some of the stories and images returned to her.
She hugged Esben's pokemon close and listened with interest, smiling as he boasted of her eventual skill, but looking confused at his explanation on fighting dragons. She shook his head to his question. "Nuh-uh. I've never had ta worry 'bout 'em. They don' really attack anyone where I'm from... I haven' heard of 'em doing that anywhere else, neither! They must be really aggressive where you're from, huh.... Do any other poketypes attack your family?" she asked quizzically.

"Ha! Good luck with that!" Esben boasted, once again flicking a thumb under his nose. Not because he didn’t believe Julie was capable, she kind of seemed like she was, but rather because there didn’t seem to be any dangers around her for her to accomplish against. Because that made sense.
"Ooohhh… really?!" That reminded him of his clan and home and for the briefest of moments, he was home sick. But like a proper warrior he shook it off and straightened his stance, head tilting some in thought. "Books… you people and yer books!" Such a fascination with these papers and places! "Hey, do you know what a ‘library’ is then?" He was reminded of that and wondered what Julie thought since she too seemed interested in books.
Flef gave a little wiggle and a chirp as he was hugged, eyeing the bears below as they conversed between one another regarding the sheep and also a plushie they’d found in the corn as well. Esben frowned and huffed, clearly disappointed at this revelation. "Really? Why not?" It was just such a strange change to come here and find that dragons just weren’t… well dragons. He nodded and looked a little uneasy as he remembered many less than friendly battles. "Sometimes! But not as much as the dragons!" He threw his hands up in the air above his head, "they’re everywhere! I think usually the other pokemon are fighting them off too. We try and work with them, to drive off the dragons. It usually works." He grinned. "My family is tough though! They’ve taken out a lot of dragons without other pokemon! Though they got some who help… it’s amazing! Nothin’ gets in our way!"

"Mhm~" Chickpea bobbed head, happy to share the information and proud of his own ability. Though, it wasn't so much an 'ability' as it was a... natural event? Genetic... thing? Either way! He was excited by it, especially since he already knew what he'd look like; information he readily relayed to Dune. "I get bigger, for one! And turn a darker green. Plus, I get this... collar of... seeds! It's all pretty cool." With evolution came a bunch of new things. Liiiiike, new moves and a new name! Neither of which he knew.

"Well aren't you just a kind soul." Wiggling his fingers, just as a test to make sure everything was working, Christian inspected the pokeball, which, as confirmed by Jun, now held his newest pokemon. Toto... He'd have to think of a name for it quick. "You better keep your guard up, from now on, or else you'll start picking up even more sick, helpless strangers. Then you'll start feeding them," he 'warned'. They couldn't have that, now could they? If Jun was busy feeding them, who'd feed him?
He'd just have to keep an eye out, for both their sakes.

Ah well, he could worry about potential 'food thieves' later, they still had the basement to explore. Clomping down two flights of stairs, Christian couldn't help but note how quiet the house was. He could just barely still hear the phonograph's music from the parlor, but other than that the only noise that echoed throughout the house originated from their group. It fit the atmosphere.
Now onto their third flight of stairs Christian, with the advantage of being one step behind Jun, did his best to try and peer past the male and further down into the basement, for a hint at what awaited them. What he got instead was a, sudden, lurch forward as the stairs beneath folded in. Instinctively Christian reached out, sliding forward all the while. The stairwell was narrow, that was his only saving grace, and so when he stuck his arms out horizontally he caught onto the wall, slowing his, graceless, descent and kick off to settle his feet against the very edges of the make-shift slide.
It... wow, yeah. It hurt. It was almost like doing the splits, and a few more inches in his thigh gap than he wanted. Still though, there was some humor to be found in this all, between the wincing and sharp inhales. Especially when Jun was in an equally awkward, though probably less painful, position between the wall. "...D-didn't... didn't expect to find you hanging here," Christian tried to joke; he was a lot funnier when his feet were together. "Hey, do you see Chickpea and the others?" He craned his neck, trying to spot the pokemon, but only caught a glimpse of purple. None of the pokemon were that shade of color... at least, he didn't think.
"Wha's that?" Hooo boy, his legs were starting to hurt.

Dune bobbed his head. Chickpea getting bigger sounded about right. [ "I don't know muh-much about evolution, but I do know getting bigger is usual." ] He couldn't really imagine the other stuff though. The image in his head was just of a bigger Chickpea, really.
Anything Dune might have said after that was lost when the stairs he had been (carefully) flopping down suddenly turned into a slippery slide. [ "Wh- wh- !" ] He started rolling sideways like a rolling pin.
[ "Wings, wings!" ] Ledian called out. She slapped her own face when Dune continued to gracelessly roll downstairs.

The noise that left Jun's throat was either a pained laugh or an exasperated grunt, and there was really no way to tell. He was just glad Christian had stopped before slamming into his back, though he could really do without the sentient sludge pile at the bottom.
"Huh?" It took a second for him to remember Chickpea was the name of Christian's chikorita. Jun tried to look behind him, but between his hair and his locked shoulder blades he couldn't see a thing. "Don't know. That thing was in the-" he sucked in a breath, adjusting his palms, "-fridge, bathtub."
Oh yeah, speaking of Dune, the poor dunsparce was busy slamming into Christian like a sack of potatoes. And then Christian was pushed against Jun, and Jun's elbows were not supposed to bend that way, and now they were all tumbling down the stairs together.

After they stopped moving, Jun laid still for a few moments. He'd somehow managed to end up on his back, and though his elbows hurt, the rest of him was doing alright. Aside from his hip where his goddamned katana was digging into it like a ********. "Off. Off." He strained to at least lift off the ground enough for the pain to lessen. As the first one down the stairs he had the privilege of being mostly on the bottom of the pile, aside from whatever was under his left leg.
They at least seemed to have landed on something soft. Some kind of mat, thankfully. Jun did spot the grimer, whose hand was on the edge of the mat. Had it been responsible for moving it into their path? It gave Jun a thumbs up, then melted down a grate in the floor. And it still didn't smell, like a grimer should.

Oh, haha, Dune made a good point! "It would be kind of weird if you evolved and didn't get bigger," Chickpea mused. Once he was bigger he could... reach more stuff! Or something like that. He was sure there were many advantages to being big.
"Do Dunsparce ev--" Chickpea's question was cut off when he gasped, a reaction prompted by the sudden disappearance of the stairs. Though his landing onto the slide was a bit rougher than he would've liked, Chickpea was quick to find joy in sliding down.

"Thing?" Trying in vain to crane his neck farther, Christian just had to assume that his 'glimpse of purple' was what Jun was referring to; his stalker. He exhaled out, shimmied and readjusted his grip on the wall, then nodded, slowly. "Glad to... finally meet your new friend," he grunted. Still though, he would've thought Chickpea would be down the slide by--
Something large, and heavy, slammed into the back of his leg, causing his knee to buckle on impact and caused him to lurch forward, violently. And right into Jun. 's**t.'
Down they went, with Christian ever so fortunate to bounce off both the slide and Jun on the way. Through the cacophony of bodies hitting metal, and pain, Christian caught the shrill, but undoubtedly excited, cry of his pokemon, "Chikoriiiiii~"

What an awkward heap two humans and two pokemon made for. Christian kept his eyes closed for several seconds, a low groan his sign of life, before he opened them slowly. Unsurprisingly he found himself staring down at Jun, or at least his shirt, as he'd ended up at chest-level with him. At the male's urging he gingerly removed himself from atop of him, which required him to carefully find his footing on the floor, with nary a word.
"Everyone alright?" He eventually asked, and placed one hand on his hip as he stood to his feet. His calf hurt, presumably from when he'd been 'assaulted', but from what he could tell there wasn't any injury that required immediate attention.

Julie scrunched up her nose but gave that same toothy grin at Esben's boastful challenge, but didn't respond. She fully intended to follow through with it! Or at least, to try. She tilted her head at Esben's surprise of books and confusion, and... distaste? Maybe just a lack of understanding, she coudln't really tell. Also, she was 7. She didn't really read into emotions, despite her occasional childish insight. Her best tool was her intuition and that didn't really work with this, apparently. She did perk up when he asked about libraries, however. "Uh huh! They're where ya borrow books from! D'ya know how to read?" she asked curiously, tilting her head to the side.
Julie gave an exaggerated shrug at Esben's confusion. "'Cause Pok'mon 'n people work together, mostly. Even dragons," she explained, looking at Esben with thoughtful consideration. Her smile soon returned, though. "I bet you could write a lotta stories 'bout all the battles 'n stuff!" she exclaimed, eyes alight. Her gaze turned, though, as she heard a familiar cry, and she bounced as she spotted Chico bounding towards them. She quickly set Flef down, gently, before sliding onto her knees to wrap her arms around the (initially worried, now slightly startled) chikorita. "Chico! There ya are! HOw'd you get behind us?" she giggled, hugging him close. He shuffled his feet, a bit flustered, and mumbled something, but Julie was already getting to her feet and beaming at Esben. "This is Chico! My chikorita!" she explained.
