 Opening Doors
I really need to get some sleep, she told herself for the umpteenth time as she rose from her covers to float over to the window. I had a long day, so why can't I just turn off my brain and do just that?
With a soft grunt she pushed the window up and let some cool night air in. Although it was early spring the weather was teasingly warm and she relished the feeling on her skin as a breeze came inside. The Widow lingered there, looking over the darkened garden serenely despite her present troubles.
It was crazy today, but it was nice to see Iorek again...
How long had it been since they last met? It felt like forever...far too long no matter what, anyway. Today had been an experience in Fel Essence capturing but even for all the trouble she, Iorek, Zeke, Justin, and Aadi had gone through it didn't end up being entirely bad. Anya knew full well she had had worse experiences when it came to the Lab. A scavenger hunt? That was nothing. And to be honest it was kind of...fun. In a weird way that is. There had been considerable risk and one of them had gotten shocked out of the literal sky but...
"Jeez." Anastacia shook her head and a smile played upon her lips, briefly. "I must really be losing it."
Still...she couldn't shake the feeling. It had been fun. She had actually had fun. Shock and alarm and being bombarded by birds in the beginning aside, getting to meet new people and spend time with someone she regarded warmly had made it worthwhile in the end. And after a winter of being cooped up it had just been a nice experience all around.
Anya wanted more of it.
Turning from the window, she went to her nightstand where her phone was always set down for the night. Picking it up, the Virus Frei unlocked it and set to scrolling through her contacts, coming to rest on the Gargoyle's name.
She chewed her lip, uncertain all of a sudden. After everything they had gone through today, he wouldn't be awake like she was, surely. He would be sleeping, perhaps in a comically sprawled out manner, and thus the idea of waking him for a stupid 'hey today was fun let's do that again sometime' text was out of the question.
Don't wake him, Anya. He needs his sleep like you need yours. But still she scrolled, looking at the names that had been programmed into her phone by her Guardian. Several she did not know but had anyway. No reason to text them at this hour, whoever they all were. But when she came to names she knew and particularly liked, well, she did as she had with Iorek's name - paused and contemplated and ultimately continued on down the line for the same simple reason not to bother them this late. Finally she got to the bottom where the very last but certainly not very least name was - Zul.
He doesn't sleep, she knew that full well. He didn't need it; Zeke and Brad and Alex had said so. Zul was different in some way that made him not need such things. Zul was...
Not really a friend per se but... He was family. Alex was Brad's sister and Zeke called her 'sister' as well because of his relationship with Brad. Her Guardian often referred to Zul playfully as 'nephew' and said that made him and Anya cousins. Their relationship in truth was vague, undefined. They were polite to one another and that was largely it. Holidays, birthdays, maybe once in a blue moon crossing paths elsewhere.
Suddenly that felt very wrong to her, as if there should be more there, could be there. Would be there, if she just reached out perhaps.
What's stopping you? It was almost as if her phone was asking her that, not having scrolled back up the list or just leaving it entirely now. She chewed a little more. What's the worst he could say? She couldn't fathom much; they were civil, not enemies. Her opinion of him had always been neutral even if he had always been a little...standoffish wasn't quite the word but it would suffice. If anything, at the very worst, she figured he would ask her why she was texting him out of the blue at damn near midnight and tell her to go to bed.
But that didn't seem like him. Or maybe she was just hoping it wasn't.
"Why not?" Anya steeled herself and took a deep breath of that night air that now filled her room. Slowly she pressed his name and pulled him up as a new text message. "Why not try?"
