Vetra

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Name Meaning: Vetra [Lithuanian for 'storm'; a call back to the lightning storm that brought life to Frankenstein's monster]
Race: Elidae
Gender: Female
Class: Blacksmith
Significant Other: N/A
Physical Description: Solid wall of a woman

3 Base Traits: Obstinate, Dismissive, Attentive
Personality:

Vetra moves to the beat of her own drum. While she sees her tasks and training as important, she isn't keen on keeping up with any sort of schedule. She prefers to sleep in, take naps on sunny days and generally just enjoy life instead of measuring each days worth by how much she accomplished. When pushed to do things she doesn't want to do she's been known to dig her heels in, and outright ignore the other party in favor of returning to her peace.

Instead of reacting with anger when her world views are challenged, Vetra has a tendency to underreact. She shuts down as if the other person simply doesn't exist, refuses to respond and may even walk away if given the chance. If given a task she'll do it and pushing her to do something she doesn't want to do goes nowhere so why bother sticking around? It's stupid to keep saying the same things over and over. While she doesn't personally view her behavior as prideful, Vetra's scornful attitude hasn't garnered many friends.

While it may be easy to think Vetra lazy or unobservant, she's actually attentive to those she cares for. Growing up with a mother whose personal demons keep her awake at night instilled in Vetra a need to care for others. She's happy to take life at her own pace, but when needed, even if she's not called for, Vetra's always there. It may not even be a big gesture; she's known for leaving her mother's favorite snacks next to her bed side after a long hunt or pulling a friend in for a wordless hug after a hard day.

History

When Vetra’s bloom was first discovered among Esena’s branches it was without the aura to dictate her matronage. It seemed as if the goddess herself had decided to give this one life, and while the bloom matured potential adoptive mothers were being considered. A few names had been brought into discussion, each with their own merits, but ultimately the little one’s upbringing would be placed into the hands of Nisamehe.

Nisamehe was an Elarian that lived each day in penance. The ancestry that bore her reveled in bloodshed, and in her youth she had been no different. Exiled and ‘disgraced’, as her matronage believed, Nisamehe came into herself with a hatred for others. It was easy in her girlhood to believe the words her mothers’ spun, but when it came time for action she found herself at a crossroads. Barely an adult, Nisamehe helped to bring down a group of adventurous yaeli and lost a piece of herself in the process. There was no pride in attacking others while they slept and what sense was there in ending lives barely older than her own? In her core Nisamehe believed in Elzira, but she could no longer call Zinris home. With exposure to their cousins in Chibale came new ideals and hard discussions, but she’d already made up her mind. When the opportunity to leave with a seed of Elzira she gladly took it. In her mind this was the chance to start fresh and create her own mark, which she spent the next several years doing.

As her sisters eventually made their way to Esena and asked for blessings, Nisamehe did not. She made excuses to friends about responsibilities, seeking a partner, and even once about it being the wrong season. They were weak, barely rooted lies that hid her fears. She didn’t want a bloom because she thought herself unworthy and despite the love she so obviously bore for the little ones in their village Nisamehe kept her prayers to herself.

So when she was presented with the option to take in a little motherless bloom she panicked. She was older now, with grey at the temple, but still strong enough to keep up with a little one. Maybe now…maybe she could try.
No one expected Vetra’s markings to be so unique, least of all Nisamehe. She was called a blessing, in more than a few ways, and loved more for it by her new mother. It was as if in Nisamehe’s martyrdom Esena had seen the true colors of her soul and sought to create a little one who would perfectly complete her mother’s life.

Vetra had a grand childhood. While her mother could be overbearing at times, it was never intentional and more a reflection on her own childhood. She expected Vetra’s studies and training to be met with the same dedication she’d shown, but the cultures of their youth were complicatedly different. Nisamehe could see that the area had given Vetra the means to become a more relaxed girl who trained at her own pace and no one elses. She often butted heads with tutors who called her ‘lazy’ and ‘unmotivated’ when she simply had her own schedule to keep.

While some claim that Vetra’s markings have given her a self-important attitude, she doesn’t see it that way. She’s always been raised to believe they’re what ties her family together even if Nisamehe didn’t ask for her directly. It makes her special, not better, and that’s just fine with her.

Growth Blurb: Vetra is real smitten with Enya [it's a one sided crush, she has no clue] and has followed her across the ocean to Zinris. Enya's there to visit family, Vetra started out chasing her, but she's kind of liking the area so she's planned on sticking around for a while to learn the ins/outs of a forge. It's a big step especially considering she doesn't even like to leave her hammock most days, but it's one Vetra's happy to take.

Physical Description: I'm diggin her hair so I'd like to keep the same general vibe.

As far as clothing goes CC. She's going through an apprenticeship in Zinris for a while so feel free to take some inspo from the Elaria.

Prentice Solo 1

Late nights and warm tea were par for the course in Nisamehe’s home. Vetra would often wake in the middle of the night to the sound of her mother rustling about the kitchen looking for something to take her mind off her nightmares. Sometimes Nisamehe was conscious enough to know she was being loud so she would try harder to disguise her footsteps, but others she was to overcome with emotion to bother. As a child Vetra had been able to sleep through it, for the most part, but now that she was getting older, she’d trained herself to listen for the signs.

Tonight was no different. Vetra had watched her mother pick at her meal before complaining of a headache and excusing herself for the evening. Those sorts of actions usually predated a panic episode later and sure enough, when the moon was at its zenith, Nisamehe started moving about. Vetra lay in bed for a while, hoping against hope that her mother would settle and go back to bed. When the sound of a chair being pulled out caught her ear she sighed. Vetra could leave the woman to her thoughts; how many other daughters would? And yet…Vetra couldn’t stand knowing she was suffering alone. So, the teenager pulled herself out of bed and meandered into the sitting area.

Nisamehe was curled up into her favorite chair with a thick, well-worn blanket tossed around her legs. There were no candles to reveal her, only the light of the moon outside, but Vetra knew the shape well. How many times had she watched the older Elarian curl her legs around themselves just to fit into the space? She wasn’t nearly as nimble now as she’d been when Vetra was younger, and it must have been painful. Still, she did so out of comfort and if one didn’t know better, they would have thought her sleeping.

“Mother?” Vetra leaned her head to the side, her tone quiet but still too loud for the space. “I’ll get the tea.”

“Vetra.” The teen paused and looked back toward Nisamehe. Her mother had extended her hand toward her, clasping her daughter’s fingers when she moved closer. “It’s alright; just sit with me a while.”

There was a solace in the act that Vetra couldn’t explain. She came closer to her mother and sat beside the older woman’s chair as the night continued around them. Sounds from the wilds crept in from time to time, reminding Vetra of the vast world beyond them, even when everything felt so close in that moment. To so many others Nisamehe was a pillar of strength and resolve; to Vetra, however, she was a broken woman.

Nisamehe was the picture of a fractured mind. She’d never once told Vetra what made her that way, but if something set her off the woman would shut down. In her youth Vetra had raged against it and got frustrated when her mother would disappear into her own head. No amount of crying could reach her and when Nisamehe inevitably broke through she would always apologize. Explaining that to anyone was impossible. She was there, but not there? It wasn’t as if she were taking strange herbs or drowning in her cups. Her mind was simply showing her things that no longer existed, but in her heart they did.

And Vetra hated the spirits that kept calling her to that place.

“You’re trying to leave me.”

“What? When did I ever say that?”

“Earlier. You said you wanted to go to Zinris with your friend. With Enya.” Her voice was barely above a murmur, but Vetra could hear every world as if it were being spoken into her soul.

“On a trip. She wants to visit with family, and I would like to see Zinris at least once in my life. I never said I would be gone forever.”

“But what if you are? What if you grow attached to Zinris and never want to come back? I wouldn’t blame you; I could never blame you.”

Mother.” Vetra reached for the Elarian’s hand, but Nisamehe never looked at her. She stared down at her covered knees through the entire exchange. “Even if I did choose to make Zinris my home I would always come back to you. I would never abandon you.” How could she? When she alone knew of Nisamehe’s dark thoughts and the places they went? No one else would know how to care for her; no one else would try.

“Do you love her? Enya?”

“I care for her a lot, but that doesn’t mean I care for you any less.” Her crush on the other Elidae was as obvious as the setting sun, but the girl in question didn’t know. Or if she did she never acted on it. Vetra…didn’t care to think on why that might be. “I just want to see what’s out there; that’s all. I need to know you’ll be okay while I’m gone, though. Can you try? For me?”

“For you I’ll try.” This time when Vetra gave her mother’s hand a squeeze Nisamehe squeezed them back in kind. She still couldn’t make eye contact with her daughter, but it was something. Vetra pulled the blanket up around her mother’s shoulders, gave her a little kiss to the forehead and settled back down on the ground next to her, quietly dozing while the night carried on.

Class Choice - Blacksmith

Mother,

It’s been some weeks since I first came to Zinris and I’ll be the first to admit that it’s been a challenge. Enya’s family have been good to me during the short stints we’ve been in contact, and she seems happier to have me around than she was when we last saw one another. I know you know that I have feelings for Enya; when is a good time tell her? I’ve crossed an ocean for her, but I still feel like timing has not been on my side. Every day she’s either off exploring Yael, endearing herself to her cousins, or doing her best to train with her Aunt. I swear I’ve done my best to wake with the sun as she does, but you know me; waking up early was never my strong suit.

While she’s gone I’ve been able to explore Zinris myself. It’s oddly like home but not at the same time. They’ve relaxed much since your time here, though a warrior’s spirit still runs strong. I was made clear that just because I’m visiting I’ve not been exempt from morning exercises, and I’ve even been given a ‘pseudo’ mentor because of my age. Her name is Hana; maybe you know her? Shorter side, heavier set but no less dedicated. When it became clear that I had no real passion for weaponry they put me in the forge with her and I must admit…I’m enjoying it.

I’ve started staying up later (as opposed to waking earlier) and working along side her. Hana has many daughters of her own (eight! If you can imagine!) so she says she’s ‘used to a bit of sass and lack of motivation’. At first I thought she was mocking me, but I fear she actually knows what she’s doing.

I think I’ll return home once we’ve finished our visit, but only long enough to pick up my things. I know it’s not what you wanted to hear; that I’m deciding to stay in Zinris for the time being. I just think that maybe a change of pace might be good for me, especially until I figure out things with Enya. I won’t be gone forever; I have no desire to make Zinris my home. Esena is my goddess and will remain so. I just want to serve her the best way I can and I know if I come back as I am that I wouldn’t.

I’ll travel to Chibale as well, if they’ll allow me entry, and study with them too. Enya’s always talking about how all the Goddesses are connected through a spiritual bond so maybe Aisha will hear me? I’d like to learn from her smiths and maybe Azehra as well, though that’s a little less likely. I’m never going to be the warrior you once were, but at least this way I can help those that will.

I’m not a traveler, I’m not even a fan of having my bedding moved from one room to the next, so a life in the forge suits me best. I’m not quick of wit nor am I determined to grow my battle prowess; I just want to make sure that those I care about are cared for in turn. I know you’ll understand, but saying these things can be harder in person.

Pray for me, mama, you know I’ll need it. I hope to return home with Enya on my arm, but she’s as wild a spirit as her mother. Thoughts of moving and starting a new life should have me scared….Instead, she worries me the most.

With love,
Vetra
