Prentice – Class Affinity Solo
Guardian

Elder Gurra stood with her hands on her hips and loomed like an angry tower. She was well known for being far too blunt, but she was a devoted sister and had many years of experience. She had been going on a tangent for five minutes now, and it was getting brutal even for her. “An absolute disgrace, that’s what you are! I don’t know what is worse; the fact that you are just barely scraping by in training or that it looks like you don’t even care to try harder. I swear, whoever plucked the blooms that day mixed you up with Danika and Vermina’s true daughter. That, or she just completely misunderstood Azera’s intentions and they were only meant to have Odina.”

Seiong’s eyes watered subtly, but they had mostly glazed over by that point to stare blankly at a set of daggers that sat on the desk. It was after another session of training and the teen stood in the elder’s tent for the review with a pouch of ice pressed against her head. The sounds of the other teens drifted into the room, their voices hushed as they gleefully listened to the elder’s rant. The elder’s words were always particularly harsh with her. Saying that she didn’t belong to her mothers though… “You are exaggerating, Gurra,” she replied flatly.

Gurra was pulled from her rant with surprise. She puffed up, ready to scold the prentice for interrupting her, but deflated with the sigh of a burdened mother. “Not as much as you wish. How am I supposed to look at your mothers and tell them their daughter is useless? You can barely handle a spear, you can’t aim a bow, and Aisha forbid I try to give you daggers again! If a war were to break out, you would fall to your own weapon before any enemy arrived. Or worse, you would fell one of your sisters!”

The instructor sighed again and dropped into her seat as though the weight of the world was on her shoulders. “I can’t, Seiong. I simply can not permit you to have a weapon. I wish I could save your mothers the embarrassment… If only you could handle a weapon as you do that silly little duruf of yours.” The elder let out a bark of a laugh. “Even then-! I wish I could believe you would be of any use with animals like Vermina. You’re lucky you’re pretty. Perhaps you will manage to marry someone willing to take the risk and produce daughters with your mothers’ spirits.”

By the time Seiong was allowed to leave, she had completely detached from the verbal beating. It was the only way to keep her doubts and fears at bay until she could get somewhere private. Somewhere away from the amusement and the sneers of her peers. She knew if she talked to her mothers about her instructor’s behavior, they would undoubtedly step in on her behalf.

She didn’t want to cause trouble though. Any time a problem came up with her, it was because she wasn’t as capable as the others. It was because she wasn’t like the others. And… she was tired of trying. Her mothers had always accepted her as she was. Her older sisters and her bloom sister had always accepted her as she was. Why did it seem as though no one else could?

Maybe it was time she accepted her fears. That her family only accepted her in a reluctant tolerance because she was family. No matter what they said or how they supported her, surely, deep inside, they resented her presence. A stain on the family and the community…

In the quiet of the forest, she could finally breathe. A blink later and the tears fell heavily from her eyes. The elder’s words echoed through her mind over and over again like a cursed mantra. She hugged herself as tightly as she could in a desperate attempt to keep her mind in one piece as the emotion poured out of her. It was all true though. She couldn’t wield the weapons, no matter how she tried. The spear and hammer and mace were all oversized and clunky, she wasn’t dexterous enough for the daggers and swords, she couldn’t aim a bow properly to save her life, and there wasn’t a lick of magic in her body. Never mind that the very thought of using a weapon on another living being made her ill. There was smithing to make armor and weapons, but she didn’t even want to make them. And using the animals to fight for her? She couldn’t bear the thought of sending out an innocent animal in her place!

Then again.. What options were left? Go and follow one of those earthling paths? She would be exiled without a second thought, for certain!

“Seiong?”

With a startled squeak, Seiong jumped to her feet to look at the source of the new voice. She had braced herself to be teased by her usual bullies, but this was someone she didn’t recognize. She took a deep breath and wiped at her eyes. “I.. I’m sorry. Have we met?”

The younger Vandrea smiled bashfully. “A few months ago… you encouraged me when I was sad. You probably don’t remember.” She clasped her hands and shifted side to side with a shyness that was adorable and comforting. “I just wanted to return the favor. ..Can I help?”

Seiong’s heart was ready to burst. She had helped that much? She paused a moment to look the youngling over and smiled through damp cheeks. About 9 years old with dimples… “No, I do remember you now. You are Chazara, right?”

Chazara brightened up like a flame in the night. “Yeah! That’s me!” She took a couple steps forward and held out a clean cloth. “Elder Gurra might be our instructor, but she’s not always right.” The girl spoke softly, as though she felt that saying such words out loud would get her in trouble. “She’s wrong about you, you know. We need sisters like you here.”

Seiong accepted the cloth and dabbed at her face. “That is very sweet of you to say.”

Chazara clasped her hands behind her back now and wiggled her shoulders. “I mean it. Elder Gurra was just being really mean. I like you a lot just the way you are. You’re nice and you helped me when others didn’t. So, I want to help my sisters, too. You know.. Show them there’s more to being a good sister than just being able to hit hard.” Her smile turned playful. “I can hit hard, but I can do more, too. Like my mama. She does lots of things other than hitting and training.”

Seiong inhaled slowly. “Do you mean it?” She felt strength return to her body as she watched the girl nod. This… This was what Seiong had needed to hear. This was what she had been waiting for. Her family’s assurances went through her head, bolstered by the encouragement of this innocent youngling. Chazara wouldn’t have followed her out all this way just to placate her. She really meant it!

She wiped at her face again, and then walked over with her arms out. “May I hug you?” As the girl jumped into her arms, Seiong felt her worries fall away. “Thank you, Chazara. I really needed to hear that.”

Chazara looked up with a big, hopeful smile. “You mean I helped?”

Seiong found herself laughing with delight. “Yes. Yes, you did. Thank you.” She still had a bit of tough thinking to do, but she could face it with a lighter view.

There was no way she could turn her back on her sisters. Whatever path she took, it would align with the values of the Aishan women. She knew she would never be the ideal warrior. She felt that in her bones. She was done trying to fit the mold of the ideal Aishan. Besides, Chazara had made a good point. There was no big war right now, no intense battles to face, but the women of Aisha’s seeds continued on. They were ready to fight when the time came, but until then.. Well, hadn’t her own mothers told her the very same thing?

Honestly, it was a little embarrassing to think about. She treasured the advice and support of her mothers, and yet here she was realizing that she had been disregarding it as mere family obligation on their part. They were absolutely right. Chazara was right. Seiong’s smile grew. She had always been right. It wasn’t about being the strongest.

She could find her place right there with her family and sisters and cousins. She was a daughter of Azehra! A daughter of Danika and Vermina! She-

“Seiong? You okay?”

Startled from her thoughts, Seiong sighed and released the hug. “Yes. I’m fine now.” She gave the girl a warm smile and stepped back to sit on the ground again. “Please, sit with me for a while.”

The pair talked for quite a while that day. By the time they finished, it was well into the evening with the forest shadows lengthening and the air cooling around them. Oh, hopefully Chazara’s mother wouldn’t be too upset! “It seems like we’ve been out here for longer than I had intended. Thank you for coming. Now, maybe we should get back?”

Chazara nodded. “Are you going to tell Elder Gurra what a meanie she is?”

Seiong’s face brightened with heat. Oh, if only she had the guts to do such a thing! “I think I will leave that to someone who is far braver. My mothers always said I didn’t have to prove anything to anyone. I think it’s about time they see that I’m finally hearing them.”

Chazara cocked her head. “Then what are you going to do?”

“Well, I have always loved the animals we keep. I don’t think I could send them off to fight, but I will enjoy taking care of them.” Sometimes, one needed to learn a lesson more than once before it truly sunk in. Finally, Seiong could look at the future with a little hope. It wasn’t going to be perfect, but it would be enough. She could be happy.
