Back Alley Potions
Solo or RP Format
Counts as 5 RP growth Points
Solo word minimum is 750, RP post minimum is 7

Magical potions are a bit of a risk in Tendaji, believe it or not. It might be because most are used to working with natural items, or that many potions don't always have their intended effects. Some of the more dubious ones have been rumored to cause scales to grow, or blindness. So if you pass by someone in a back alley saying they have a potion to help you grow two feet taller, it's often better to look the other way.

Or is it?

What would you find if you looked over at what they had to sell? Is it really all that strange? Or maybe you'll find a fun hidden gem worth taking home.

[ What might you find someone selling if you approached a back-alley potion shop? Note: Potions that change appearance with growths are event-limited and may not be purchased/used from this prompt ]

"Have faith, and it will bring you whatever your heart desires!"

That was a rather bold claim... but what if it was real? Seiong crossed her arms as the merchant boasted on about this special concoction of his. She listened with a hefty dose of skepticism... but what if..? Seiong didn't want that much in her life. Happiness and health for her family and herself. That was all she needed, usually. If there was even a remote chance that a mere drink could make her more graceful and less of a laughingstock to the sisters and cousins, shouldn't she take it? Would it be worth the risk?

Tutu the duruf snorted and rolled his eyes up to his owner. This place smelled weird. He just wanted to go play.

A snort left Odina as she listened to the merchant's useless words. The Aishan had tagged along with her sister into the earthling markets once more, but even though she was a bit more open to exploring the earthling ways there was a limit to what she could tolerate. "No brew could bring you anything." She grumbled as she looked towards Tutu, feeling a similar urge to go out and leave the store even though she had promised to at least try to shop around. It was much easier to look for necessities or weapons, but potions like these? It was a stretch for Odina who liked to keep things simple.

"A potion for clairvoyance? You think drinking this eyeball will help you to see what you want?" She held up the golden brew towards Seiong with a frown. "If this is for sight, imagine what you would be drinking for a heart's desire." She shook her head and made a face before putting the potion down. There were some very interesting bottles along the shelves, but surely Seiong didn't believe that these concoctions could actually grant them boons...right?

Her arms hugged a little tighter around herself. It was silly to entertain the idea that a potion could fix her problems. Seiong's cheeks flushed slightly with embarrassment and she gave an awkward laugh. "I feel like the point of potions is that they work whether or not you believe in it, anyway." Right.. it was a stretch. That potion was surely less than genuine.

She flinched away from the floating eyeball and wrinkled her nose. "Even if it did.. I don't believe I could drink it." She shook her head and turned to the shelves to put the wish granting potion out of her mind. Surely some of these were good on their word.. Maybe. She plucked up a jar filled with some dark substance. Dang, it was heavy! "For helping your garden grow tall and healthy." she held the jar up in two hands for a closer look. "I have to be honest... it just looks like manure."

Tutu huffed and bumped his head against Seiong's leg. When he only got a distracted head pat in return, he huffed again and turned to lick Odina's leg. Maybe she would play?

“Mmmhmm.” Odina simply nodded before moving along and browsing through more bottles, usually just holding them for a moment then shaking the bottle slightly before placing it back on the shelf. Seriously, how many of these existed here? She had never seen so many strange brews all in one place like this before. “Probably for the best if you didn’t.” Odina agreed with a nod. She truly believed anything was possible with hard work and honestly using a potion seemed like a cheat, even if they did work.

A chuckle did leave Odina’s lips. “Manure is something I would trust over the rest. Maybe that one is worth picking up.” She mused before glancing at the duruf, studying him for a moment before carefully tossing a small ball that she had kept in her belongings. Thankfully she had enough precision that it simply rolled down the aisle, but maybe it would be enough to amuse the familiar if he wanted to go fetch it. “Resistance? Do you need to be tougher, sister?” She teased slightly looking at a bottle of yellow liquid streaked with black swirls that seemingly moved on their own.

"They shouldn't be selling it as though they created some special mix. Just call it what it is." She shook her head with amusement and put the jar back. "Fertilizer is fertilizer."

Tutu let out an excited little chuff of a bark and scrambled after the ball. He went to bite it, but just ended up pushing it further along the aisle. More than pleased, he continued to give chase.

Heat rushed along Seiong's cheeks suddenly. "I.. do you think I need to? ...I guess.. it wouldn't hurt.." Though she radiated self-consciousness, she couldn't help looking up to see what Odina was pointing out. Now that.. was an interesting looking potion. How did they get it to swirl like that without just blending into a muddy color? Standing next to her muscular sister... well, the contrast in their statures stood out even more.

"But then you couldn't charge double the price." Mused Odina even though the very thought brought a sneer to her lips. She truly hated merchants and the things that they did to earn more profit from those foolish enough to play along. It was all so silly to her, especially since she preferred to try and gather or make everything on her own...minus baked goods since those were a weakness of Odina's.

At least her expression softened with some amusement as she watched Tutu chase after the ball before she glanced back towards Seiong, realizing that her words had caused a flush. Oh. Odina opened her mouth, closed it again as she pondered her words, before simply nodding. "I mean if you feel like it would help you....maybe taking a few extra blows during training could show others a stronger front." Or a more reckless one. She pursed her lips as she studied the brew, tilting the potion slightly as if trying to figure out what the strange swirls were inside. "If not then that's alright as well. You are strong as you are, Seiong." She stated with a small smile, even if that strength was different from her own physical assets everyone in her family had their own strengths...even if it was still in the process of being discovered.

Seiong couldn't help frowning at the potion as doubtfully as she regarded Odina's statement about her strength. Would anything in this shop actually work? "It's probably like the other two and just wishful thinking in a glass," she murmured as she turned away from the brew and the encouraging smile. "Even if it did work, it wouldn't actually count as.. me." Wasn't using a potion cheating? Goodness, she flipped on the idea more than.. more than a cook flipped a griddle cake!

Tutu yipped as his squat legs tripped up and he slid along the ground on his stomach. He thudded into a shelf and yelped as a bottle fell onto him. Thankfully it didn't shatter, but a crack allowed a runny blue liquid to seep through along his body.

"Hmm, probably." Odina nodded before putting the bottle back on the shelf, giving it one last glance before looking back at Seiong. Maybe her trying to be supportive had not come out as smoothly as she had wanted? She truly wasn't that good with words, was she? Ah, well at least I tried. Still, there was a flicker of pride that Seiong declined the potion. As helpful as Odina hoped it could be there was still that pride which swelled at the sight of her sister rejecting the easier option. "I believe in you..."

Her plans for an encouraging speech were delayed though at the sudden sound of a crash. "Tutu?" Oh no... Odina gasped as she turned around and watched as the blue liquid slowly seeped onto the duruf, the dog letting out a strange yelp before its body twitched. Oh! Please don't tell me I killed Seiong's pet when trying to motivate her! A groan left her lips as she started towards the duruf, Odina reaching out to try to scoop him up in her arms before frowning in confusion as he seemed to seep through like air. "What?" Tutu whined, bouncing through Odina's arms before starting around the store in a frenzy with his legs twisting about like a strange elastic fog, the frantic yelps turning into playful yips as he started flying about as a gaseous shape...the very thing that the bottle was labeled for.

A little sprig of warmth sparked in her chest... but then the crash and Odina's concerned call made her tense up even further. "Tutu?" she squeaked out as she hurried after her sister. "Oh, I-I-I'm so sorry," she stammered out to the horrified salesman. "I'll pay for the- Tutu?"

She could only gawk as her precious duruf seemed to inflate like a spitorog and started.. floating?! "Tutu!" She hurried to try grabbing the poor canine. Instead, she tripped over her own feet and just barely avoiding hitting another set of shelves. Her cheeks were burning hot with embarrassment and concern for her familiar, but she managed to push herself back onto her feet. "Odina, what do we do?"

Tutu was practically grinning as he floated over the heads of the customers and bounced against the ceiling. Now this was playing!

Was he turning into a fog now?! The strangely inflated Tutu seemed to let out a rather unpleasant noise as he simply turned into a misty figure of himself. Odina could only shake her head in dismay as she tried to grab onto Tutu, the form slipping between her fingers before bouncing back towards the ceiling. "Come down here!" She called out to the duruf before patting her leggings for any type of treats. Even if she could entice him with a treat would he even be able to eat it? What was even in that bottle?!

"Careful!" Odina reached out towards Seiong to keep another random bottle from breaking and splashing on her sister. The last thing they needed was for Seiong to turn into something strange as well! Meanwhile Tutu was yipping and chasing after the ball that he had abandoned earlier, the gaseous shape trying its best to bite the ball even though it kept going through his body. A frustrated yip went through him as another woman turned the corner and promptly fainted in surprise from the appearance of a ghost duruf. "Oh my." A new figure appeared behind the sisters, a lightning man with frizzy hair and golden rimmed glasses. "Seems like you've gotten yourself into a gassy situation." He teased as he watched the duruf bouncing around...err well if that's what you could call strange movements of the wiggling fog that was Tutu.

"What's the cure for this?" Odina turned around with frustration, clearly not amused by the teasing.

"Eh, about another five minutes and he should be ok. He didn't ingest the whole potion, right?" The lightning man shrugged lightly, not even bothered by the towering Vandrea who had crossed her arms. "If he had drank the whole potion then you'd be here for a good hour or so but I'm guessing it should wear off soon enough. Hopefully he doesn't wander outside and float away too far, so I'd keep an eye on him before he floats too high and then his body tries to solidify."

Seiong gasped sharply as her precious pup continued to shift and change. It would surely be hilarious later, but right now.. She looked at the earthling and chewed her lip. "There's quite a bit on the floor. I hope that means he didn't get much of it. I didn't actually see what happened." She frowned at the puddle, but the remaining liquid was rapidly evaporating now that it was exposed to the air. She shuddered at the thought of Tutu getting outside and floating away. After a deep breath, she sat down and patted her lap. "Tutu. Come here," she pleaded.

Tutu looked up from the fruitless attempt to play with the ball. With a small whine, he kicked his wispy little legs until he reached Seiong's side. His tongue flapped out to lick his owner, but, like with the ball, there was no real connection. His predicament was sinking in and he whined again with a pout.

The earthling nodded. "Then he really should be fine. Just stick around for a bit longer while I clean up those fragments of glass." The rest of the potion was evaporating and the person honestly didn't seem worried about it. The sight made Odina's shoulders relax a bit more even though she couldn't help stealing glances towards Tutu and Seiong, worry expressed in the slight furrow of her brow. "I'll go pay for this." She motioned towards the mess with a slight smile towards her sister, "Tutu looks a bit more solid now, so hopefully soon we can get out of here." The last thing she wanted to do was linger in a strange potion shop like this, never again!

Marching towards the front of the store the Vandrea prepared to leave coin at the register, an apology on her lips before the earthling simply shook his head. "Just take a healing potion and pay for it. As long as you take something instead of paying for nothing, I'll feel better about it."

Odina opened her mouth to protest before simply closing it again, just one final sigh leaving her lips before she took the green potion from the man and left him with coins. She refused to look back over her shoulder at the risk of seeing any smug or annoying expression and instead focused back on Seiong and Tutu. "How is he?" She asked, crossing her arms with the cloth bag holding a potion hanging from her fingers.

If Seiong got one lesson out of today, it was that potions really could do amazing things. It made the thought of trying the dream granting potion a little more tempting. If one could turn a duruf into a lighter-than-air entity, then maybe... She looked over at Odina with a wane smile. If she did use a potion, her sister was sure to be disappointed in her. It.. was something to think about later.

Once Tutu seemed to stop floating, Seiong stood and cautiously stepped outside with her eyes locked on her pup. When Tutu got out into the open and didn't blow away, Seiong sighed with relief. "It looks like he'll be okay." She looked at Odina and then turned her head away bashfully. "I'm sorry about that. I hope it didn't cost too much.. but at least he wasn't yelling."

Seeing he was back on the ground, Tutu gave a pleased yip and walked cautiously along after the girls.

Odina usually was gruff, but for once her expression was gentle. "Don't worry about it. I enticed Tutu, not you." She shook her head before giving a simple shrug and turning away from the store. "Earthling wasn't too bad, he didn't charge for the broken one and just insisted I take a healing potion." She was thankful that Tutu was okay, even if she didn't openly show her affection for the duruf the Vandrea was fond of the cute familiar. Perhaps she was a bit fonder of earthlings as well not that she would ever openly admit that either, especially not as she walked with her sister through town eager to go home as soon as possible.
