James had stared at the little notebook page in front of him for some time, trying to think of an answer.

In truth, the last 30 days hadn't been so bad. Sure, classes had been cancelled, people were dying but - it was all outside. He could ignore it. He could doodle on his dorm room walls, eat potato chips, and try to forget. Forget that the world had ended, and he'd been left behind.

It was really hard on days where the University's task force sent him venturing near the old daycare. What had once been a place full of joy and fun was empty now, slowly being overtaken by weeds and neglect.

He hoped they'd made it out.

It's been four weeks since it began, he wrote hesitantly.

It's been weird, living without a phone or internet. The U's library is still mostly intact, so at least there's plenty of reading to be done. I guess I've just been doing what most of us have been doing here, since the day it happened: living.

He frowned. They probably wanted something more, but he wasn't sure what to give.

I have also been practicing my hopscotch skills, he scribbled as an addendum. And have written several scripts for new episodes of Sesame Street to explain the Day Zero event in a method that is fun and topical for children. I would be more than happy to provide a copy to whomever sees fit.

There, that sounded much more upbeat and productive. With his signature smile, James got up and left to turn it in. It was almost like having homework again.
