After certain events happening (right under their noses!) it was decided there were not enough guards to keep their eyes on everything. The goal of this quest is to start training for guard duty earlier than they have prior to now. All freshman will be assigned to a higher ranking member to show them the ropes.
Quest Notes: -This is a RP format Quest! No dice, just RP. - Choose one (or more than one if you'd like!) Scenario below and RP it out. - The higher ranking officers mentioned are random NPC's, just pretend it is some random member of the group mentoring your character(s). - You can do this Solo or in a group! Just pretend each of you is assigned a NPC mentor. - Make sure to make a note somewhere in your post(s) about wearing your Jersey! You are leaving the dorms so the Jersey is required.

3: You discover part of the University where the lights have gone out mysteriously. Making a mental note to tell the leaders, you decide to check it out as well. What do you find? (most likely a false alarm! Just a fizz'd wire~ )
James took in a deep, shaky breath.
He hated the darkness.
He'd always been a little leery of lightless places, whether it be creaky bedroom hallways or dank, mysterious caverns. There was just something about the yawning abyss that it represented that unsettled him. He adjusted his glasses, clutching the flashlight his mentor had given him in his other hand. His dark blue jersey seemed to melt into the shadows.
"Um, are you sure this is a good idea?" He glanced back down the way they came - the lightbulbs' dim glow was warm and welcoming.
His mentor merely responded with a noncommittal grunt, waving him onward. James glanced to the other members of their little expedition nervously.

Wonderful. Just wonderful. Dahlia peered around the other peeps surrounding her. She wasn't sure what to think about the group - although they were quite a colorful looking cast. Dahlia was calm in this situation. She liked the darkness, for many different reasons.
Depression's like a big fur coat. It's made of dead things but it keeps me warm. That lyric stuck to her in the mist of these people, and in the current situation that they were in. She peered over her shoulder to see a guy who seemed very scared. Or maybe unsure of his surroundings - which would obviously scare some people. She wasn't sure if she should ask if her were okay or anything. Sounding a bit like a creeper wasn't her forte.
Their mentor - or some kind of a leader - didn't seem to care about what was on the other end of the building we were heading. A rule from almost every horror movie (or book) was never to go into an area if you don't have any idea what was going on. Most of the time there were things hiding there that wanted to kill you. Or take possession of your soul. One or the other. Dahlia just kept her right hand holding her left arm, something that always seemed to help her in situations like this. Hopefully she wouldn't start having more thoughts on this 'mission'.

Unfortunately for others, perhaps, James was the kind of person who emitted nervousness like a human chihuahua. And, like a chihuahua, he felt an overwhelming need to latch onto the nearest warm body for safety. The ultimate lost puppy.
He gravitated toward a female member of their little band - one with dark, curly hair that had colorful highlights. She was very nearly his height too - something he found oddly comforting.
"Um," he began, in a half whisper, letting his hand drop from his glasses to his moustache, which he twirled and twisted with quick, fitful movements, "any idea where we are? I think we passed the dorms a while ago, but it's been so long since I left the safe areas..." He let his voice trail off, eyes flicking around, vainly searching the blackness outside the halo of their flashlights.
"It's probably alright," he added, mostly to himself. "Haha, surely they wouldn't bring a bunch of freshmen out somewhere too dangerous."
In spite of this, his eyes flickered to the young woman, plaintively seeking assurance.

Dahlia was more off in her head than with other people. She kept thinking of how things would have been if Day Zero never happened. How people wouldn't have to worry about trying to live to the next day. How people wouldn't of had to die in front of others faces.. She shuddered. She can't think about those things in a place like this. It wouldn't help her or anyone else in this situation.
She peered over to see one guy somewhat talking to himself. But then he started talking to her. She wasn't sure if it would be a good idea to exactly talk to him, and yet words fumbled out of her mouth. "Nope. No idea. If I am right though, as long as we stick together in numbers, we should be fine." She peered over to guy. He totally looked like a scared little dog - especially with the mustache of his. She landed her hand on his shoulder. "Dude, we'll be fine. Just breathe. That's the biggest thing to do in moments like this."

"You're right," he murmured back, more quietly now that the darkness had mostly closed around him. He smiled, a slight hint of uncertainty causing his lips to twitch. Just remember to breathe. That seemed easy enough. He ran a hand through his hair nervously, rolling his shoulders under her reassuring touch.
"James. Nice to meet you," he added somewhat formally. He let his flashlight wander as they walked. "Were you, like, a student here? I am - was." He sighed heavily.
"I miss being in school." The simple life, before the death and destruction overwhelmed them all.

She pulled her arms above her head to stretch out the muscles. She hadn't really been sleeping much - and when she had it wasn't good sleep. Plus when she copped out from lack of sleep, she'd fall asleep in some of the worst positions ever. She peered back over to the guy. He seemed a little more calm now that he was somewhat regulating his breathing. She smiled weirdly - maybe taking his mind off of things. "Dahlia. Dahlia Ann Burton is mine. And I was a student. Maybe I will be a student again in the future. haha".
She sighed. "I miss school but at the same time I don't miss it at all. It's been a love hate relationship since middle school."

"Oh really?" James' expression turned puzzled. "I loved school. I'm actually - well, was - studying to teach myself. Early childhood education," he ratted off proudly. Talking like this - it forced him to relax, to focus on something besides the darkness. This was almost - nice. James missed nice.
"So, what happened in middle school?" If it was a rude question, James seemed oblivious.

Dahlia paused for a moment, not knowing if it were a good idea to say what happened to her in middle school. Maybe it would be best to give the lighthearted version of middle school. Because middle school sucked a truck. "Well the normal middle school drama. The cliques, the homework, puberty, the end of the world. The normal stuff." She tried to say it jokingly enough. One thing for sure, she wasn't lying about most of those things. Middle school was simply put those main things.
She peered over to the guy with a shy smile."I hope that when this is over that you become a teacher - and a great one on that."

"Oh!" His face darkened for a moment. Ah, yes, puberty. Best not to remember it at all.
"Wow, thank you," he exclaimed, clapping his hands together and nearly dropping his flashlight. "That's really kind of you to say!" James grinned, and elbowed her conspiratorially. "Were you majoring in motivational speaking, because I feel LOADS better already."

Dahlia laughed, her head swaying side to side."Nah. I'm not. I was going into computer engineering actually. It's hard but well worth it in the end." She paused for a moment, and suddenly remembered how much math she had been doing since before this happened. Dear god it was a lot of math - and some programming - but still a lot of math. "Bu-t I never really thought about motivational speaking. It's usually a lot easier talking to one person than a huge group."

"Oh, wow! Engineering? You must be smart." James tapped his chin. "Come to think of it, I think I met another gal your age doing," he waggled his fingers in the air, "computery stuff. Looks like you guys are apocalypse proof!"
He smiled brightly at her last comment. "Well, whatever the case, you're doing a great job-"
Something skittered in the distance, at the edge of their collective lights.
"Did you see that." He froze in his tracks, chuckling nervously. "P-probably, like, a rat or something. You know, rats aren't so bad," he rambled on, "I had one as a pet as a kid. I named him Splinter. He was very friendly and also definitely not a zombie hiding in the darkness waiting to kill us. Do you like pets? I like cats."

She laughed a bit. "Yeah computer engineering. Totally would be helpful in a time where we have basically nothing relating to electricity that we can use it for." That last comment was a bit more sarcastic, but you gotta admit. It was pretty funny.
And suddenly he turned into scared little chihuahua all over again. All because of some stupid little noise that he couldn't see. Wonderful. She grabbed him by the shoulder, like a protective blanket, and kept him walking. "It was nothing. Something that tiny wouldn't be able to do anything to us. And I like pets. Cats especially." She tried her best to keep a straight face on, knowing that that might be the best way to go at this situation.

Ah, here was something that was warm and familiar. James nearly instantly forgot about the creepy noises.
"I really love cats." He started to reach for his phone and stopped, frowning slightly. "I used to have this game, you see, it was about feeding stray cats and making friends. And you had to collect items and food to appeal to different cats, it was really great, and didn't interrupt studying too much, which was nice -"
Another skitter in the darkness made him jump, but he tried his best to ignore it -
"And anyway, I've never had a real cat but I always imagined it would be nice," he managed in a high pitched croak. "Did you ever have any pets growing up?"

She giggled. A game like that sounded nice. Relaxing even. Which would totally come in handy at a time like this. But since there isn't any electricity left - at least not one using a generator - she'd have to go without using one.
She heard the noises, but she had gotten used to those noises after some time. "Well, when I was little I had a couple cats. My little br-" She stopped what she was about to say. Her brother. Dahlia didn't even know if he was alive somewhere, died, or one of the infected. She prayed to above that he was safe and sound, but she knew thinking in such high hopes wasn't worth the risk. "My little bro wanted a ferret. I don't know why. Their poop smells so ba-d." She tried to get the image of her little brothers body mangled up somewhere under the rubbage, but it was a lot harder than it looked.

if you want to wrap we can, as I think we both met the word count requirement! if not that is also fine up to you~
James frowned as she paused, then his face crumpled. Kids. Caught in this mess. He tried not to think of it, instead forcedly and probably overly loudly laughing at her comment.
"HAHA, yeah. Ferrets, they are kind of awfully smelly," he agreed in a vague and somewhat general way. The only experience he'd had with the strange, sinuous critters was walking past pet store displays. "My folks didn't let me have any pets. I had childhood asthma. All better now though," he added, thumping his chest so hard that he nearly choked on his own spit.
When he could see past the tears in his eyes, he noticed a faint light up ahead.
"Oh, there," he pointed, "looks like the electricity is working up there. Wonder if it's like Christmas lights, and like, one of the bulbs back here just needs to be screwed back in? Heh."
