James was in his dorm room, playing with his new toy. He wasn't sure what it was - some kind of virtual pet, obviously - but he'd been feeding and caring for it since it had turned up, and was quite enjoying himself. He'd named it Gideon. His quiet time was very abruptly interrupted, however, by fireworks. Toy forgotten, James was suddenly standing with his face pressed to the window. "No. Freakin'. WAY." He threw the device in his pocket and rushed out the door. --- When James had finally navigated to the source, he couldn't help but stare, awestruck. There were so many flashing THINGS. It was gaudy and tacky and utterly wonderful. Somewhere, amidst the utter chaos that was the gross display of light pollution was a sign that simply read, 'DELTA CASINO'. He stood there for a while, simply basking in the glow of technology. It was like the grime and dirt that had accumulated on his penny-bright soul was being washed away in an extravagant display of joyful hedonism. He stepped forward, and eagerly pushed open the doors.

James had to spend a few blinking moments recovering from the sight that lay before him.
A massive casino sprawled out across the grounds, going on in seemingly endless rows of slot machines and poker tables. A thick cloud of smoke lingered in the air, making the world seem fuzzy and soft. And, more importantly, people were everywhere, going about their daily business as if the world outside were not falling apart at the seams.
He coughed, and immediately wished for an inhaler.
Instead, a well dressed man appeared at his elbow, offering him a drink - and coins to play the games.
Hesitantly, his elegant and umbrella'd drink in hand, he took a seat at a slot machine reasonably close to the door. Who were all these people? He wondered, pulling the collar of his sweater up over his nose to try and filter out some of the smog. In spite of feeling completely overwhelmed, a part of him buzzed with happy adrenaline - he'd never been gambling before!
He downed his drink in one go, and tugged on the lever.

Two coins tumbled out the slot.
"WOW!" he exclaimed, clapping his hands together merrily.
He gave it another tug. Two fours slid into place next to each other, and another pair of coins rolled out of the slot.

James looked around the room, then back at the slot machine.
"I guess it wouldn't hurt to give it one more go..."
BAM. Two more coins. He was on a roll.

Some time later, a very woozy James leaned his head on the shoulder of the patron next to him. "I don't...feel so good," he managed, rolling his eyes to look up at - no one. He was literally laying his head on his own shoulder. And then, gracefully, like a tree in some prehistoric forest, he fell over, out of the stool and onto the carpet. That must have been a hell of a drink. --- James came to and sat bolt upright - or tried, only to discover that he already was. He was also, he would come to find, as the cobwebs drifted from his mind, tied up. To a chair. And not in a 'fun on Saturday night' way. Wherever he was, it was pitch black, and he could hear several someones breathing...When the lights suddenly snapped on he jumped and nearly overturned his seat. As the strange announcer voice droned on, he squinted, managing to make out a set of speakers in what appeared to be a classroom. He started to turn his head to comment to whoever else was in the room, but found his head also secured. So instead, he kept his monologue internal.Ooh, a game! I love games.
Escape?
Oh dear.
Oh that's not very nice.
Oooh, but I'm worth money!
Not money, coins.
I wonder where my coins are.
I can't check my pocket.
I hope they left Gideon.
Dinner fundraiser. Are we still invited if we win?
I could really go for dinner."OH! OH ME, PICK ME!" James began, and was summarily dragged off into another room by a casino attendant... and given a rather grim choice. "Now," booms the announcer voice in the new room, a much smaller one, "these are the losing players from the last game. A Bunch of sore losers if you ask me. But we're giving you a chance to redeem one as their patron. If you manage to buy yourself out of the games, then you will also buy one of them out too. Now, which one will it be?" James looked at them both - the young woman and the man, and gulped. Finally, he chose the younger of the two. And got to watch as the boy went down in a shower of bullets. Wide eyed, he stared at the casino attendant in disbelief. COINS: 56

James was then rudely shoved back into the casino proper before he could recover. It was then he realized that most of the faces in the casino were familiar. The air wasn't that of casual debutante - it was far more anxious and desperate. Furtive glances were shot to the guards around the room, preventing any escape, and everyone seemed to be wearing an odd collar... It wasn't long before James had his own. The part of him that wasn't still shell shocked at watching the poor boy die was disappointed that his value seemed, well, low.
