Leatherworking - Leatherworking was a mark of hunters from whence he hailed. Scraps of hide harvested from the kill were stretched and tanned, then fashioned into bracelets or necklaces that the hunters often wore to mark their kills. This tradition lives on with Shale, who has since fashioned leather bracelets with carved bone accents as well as a necklace laden with a tooth for each successful kill. Now, however, he tools leather to make some money on the side. It’s a marketable skill, and practical in how leather’s sturdiness could be used for a variety of tasks, be it fashioning a strap to tie something (or someone) down, patching up old clothes, or working out new handles for tools.
He can tan, cure, and work into leather anything one offers him. It’s rumored that he has a leather bracelet with a rose tattoo on it.
Hunting - The thrill of engaging in the hunt often outweighs the acquisition of prey. For Shale, hunting is a state of mind - it is the assertion of one organism over another in a play for complete domination of life. With every kill made, it shapes the future of each species involved - and over time, this opposition sharpens prey and predator alike into their own evolutions. On a more basic level, Shale enjoys bow hunting and bow fishing mostly for sport. He does know how to cook, and greatly enjoys preparing meals of the game that he takes home. Shale primarily hunted with his brother, and is unused to other companionship involved, but remains somewhat open toward teaching others. Even now, hunting still remains a frequented and cherished activity, with Shale hunting at least once a weekend.
Reading - Shale never fancied reading for pleasure. Initially his interest in reading began with how-to books, as he tried to teach himself useful skills, but that fascination soon branched into more philosophical approaches on life. He never developed a taste for literature, or fictional accounts, as he found the stories impractical and difficult to apply toward life (Shale also lacks imagination when reading, which is something he will never cop to). He will peruse libraries in search of a good book or recommendation, and has on more than one occasion spent the day in a bookstore sifting through the sections that he liked. While normally a solitary hobby, he actually enjoys reading aloud, though primarily to animals. Currently his library is slowly starting to grow, as this was a recently discovered joy for him.
There are also rumors that he owns a couple cookbooks.
Exploring - As someone who never lived in the city before, Shale has a lot to learn - and a lot to explore. Be it inside or out, Shale has the propensity to wander and attempt to discover his surroundings. He will visit stores he does not recognize, venture through streets he never noticed before, and check out events he’s never attended. He will also collect small ‘mementos’ of these places (and especially from people, he loves nabbing items that he doesn’t think will be missed and may have a bit of a kleptomaniac tendency). Experiences in these places may also be journaled about and subject to revisit, as he slowly starts to acclimate himself to this new life in the city. So far he enjoys these daily outings, but all the stimuli present in a city builds quickly into oversaturation.

Calm -- Few times in his life has Shale ever been ruled by his emotions. Always possessed of a calm and collected demeanor, Shale was seen as a quiet, contemplative child growing up and that projection never wavered. As an adult, Shale hardly raises his voice beyond conversational, and maintains a steel grip on his temper. Seldom is he ever raised to ire, and he prides himself on this fact. This quality allows Shale to provide steady support for those who would get to know him, especially in turbulent times. His additional quietude renders him a good listener for those in dire stress as well. His phlegmatic demeanor also helps to diffuse highly charged situations, as he rarely contributes to escalation in a fight.
Intelligent -- Possessed of a gift for voracious learning, Shale is quick to pick up new tidbits of information and has a natural tendency to learn quickly. His learning style excels best with visual/kinesthetic gearing, though he can function well in visual/nonverbal. Shale’s preferences lie in learning skills that involve working with his hands, history, and philosophy. He enjoys trivia facts and will often employ them when prompted to do so (thus he is a joy to have at cocktail parties, if one can get him to talk). He could feasibly make a good tutor, or partner on a trivia game show.
Independent -- Shale was raised in a society that expected independence and leadership out of him as a young age, and thus never grew to accept dependency on others. To him, it’s more comforting to navigate a city based on his own capabilities, or learn a task through self-guidance rather than depend on someone else to assist. This renders Shale quite good at guidance for others, and refreshingly not burdensome. He is not the type of person to cling incessantly due to a perceived inability to do something for himself. He also prefers to form his own decisions and beliefs, and thus is a good go-to judge for arguments or seeking advice about charged interpersonal struggles.
Flaws:
Austere -- Shale’s world view is incredibly stark, and devoid of mirth and laughter. He does not tolerate jokes well, seldom smiles, and finds flippant personalities somewhat grating on his nerves. Given his inability to understand jokes, some people mistakenly consider him dense (though he does not bother to correct this notion). With such a severe demeanor, he is not often approached by others, either. Ultimately he has proven quite adept at repelling others from interacting with him on any kind of a lighthearted basis and prefers to keep it this way - the less mirth and merriment, the better he can concentrate on the work at hand (which, again, looks like just being a b*****d).
Transgressive -- Given past events, Shale learned that going against the grain often yielded more rewards than going with the flow. He seeks out contrary action, even to a lawbreaking extent, due to his beliefs. He may steal solely because it is frowned upon by current society, and thus he mistakenly believes that committing the act will bring him good fortune or improve the standing he will have in life. This often sabotages what few relationships he can manage, as he will openly betray friends and decimate their trust for this skewed understanding that doing so might benefit all parties in the long run. He will violate trust, or promises, or requests and sees no inherent downside in this behavior - even if it’s literally ruined his life to this point.
Emotionally Flatlined -- Shale hardly ever speaks. He’s standoffish, difficult to connect with, and nearly impossible to relate to. He’s so often in his own head that he’s almost unreachable. Shale appears to exist in his own world and is perfectly content with living there indefinitely; so far as he’s seen, no one in the world around him can quite form solid, interesting relationships with him. There is no need to tax himself in looking for someone that could fulfill any kind of friendship need. He does not see the appeal or want for friends, which renders him a total b*****d in certain viewpoints. And perhaps more aggravatingly, this does not even concern him slightly. He simply does not understand the value of human companionship and does not want to.

Challenge:
Lieutenant - It's over.
Captain - I trap stars.
General - Conflict is our lifeblood.
Weapon:
Lieutenant - A pair of cloth driving gloves.
Captain - Studded leather gloves.
General - Double-bladed gauntlet.
Fighting Style: At lieutenant stage, Umber is far more prone to stalk and strike than outright fighting his foes. He believes the essence of first strike determines the fate of the battle. When engaged in combat, however, he is steady but untrained in hand-to-hand tactics, so he is unable to severely damage his foes. His steadiness allows him to dodge or block somewhat better than a typical greenhorn lieutenant, but will not save him from getting struck down by higher ranking enemies. He understands the value in living to see another day and the weight of the Negaverse's investments in him, so he will retreat if the encounter grows too precarious.
At captain stage, Umber still stalks and strikes opponents instead of engaging outright. Studded knuckles allow for more damage when landing strikes, and training with Xenotime and Cinnabar allow for more experience in attacking foes. His first instincts are to knock the enemy off-balance to thwart their offensive and defensive capabilities, and then follow up with as much damage as he can manage. Occasionally he tries to teleport behind the foe due to the amount of time required in turning around, but he is not terribly good at this. He still retreats when exhausted or overwhelmed, and sees no downside in doing so.
At general stage...
Why the Negaverse?: Shale comes from a unique background where youma were encountered and understood as monsters. However, the splinter faction within his home town viewed them far differently. Shale believes they are no demons, but he will not offer his own explanation just yet. Instead he quietly serves with this great chance to stand among their kind.
Stance on the Enemy: Currently Umber lacks a strong opinion on the Senshi and Knights he was bidden to fight. Overall they seem disorganized and aren't well versed in the art of stalking and eliminating their targets. Some exhibit strange glows that he doesn't understand. Mostly they do not pose a threat to him - few have ever deliberately attacked him, and he has only once undertaken a sore defeat. While this bothers him somewhat, he has continued to find Senshi an ineffectual force against the Negaverse. As a result, they are mostly a pester.
Umber will target senshi and knights if he finds it useful to do so. Their starseeds have use, they're corruptible if they prove useful prospective allies, and otherwise he can kill them with a flick of the wrist.
Stance on the Allies: The Dark Mirror Court has entities within that see fit to deal with Umber. He has established some meaningful alliances with Mintaka and Elsa, who stand as his eyes and ears for the Court and differing views. Cooperation comes at little price to himself and the Negaverse, for they have never before intersected on their energy draining endeavors. He finds the Court quite curious in a benign manner and would like to learn more about it. He has hopes to visit Mirrorspace one day but is aware of the waning love for the Negaverse among their kind.
His brother stands as one of the few Negaverse senshi he knows, and Umber lacks a favorable opinion of their kind by proxy. Currently he works to rehab Ochre into something useful, and while Cyllene heads his brother's punishment, Umber is still questioning the lack of results from both their ends. Haüyne, a recent corrupt, reacted to him with such vitriol that he handed her off to his superior, Xenotime, and vowed to only deal with her as necessary. Warhol, the third corrupt he had contact with, seems far less difficult. They prove a rare breed, so Umber has not found many opportunities to connect with the reformed senshi on his side.
Youma, however, are an entirely different story... His beliefs pin them as something higher, but Umber is starting to recognize the folly in that design. He finds no interest in becoming one himself, but he sees them as easier to understand and more natural for him to work with. As a hunter, the dynamic between youma and officer suits him perfectly.
Half-youma officers intrigue him, and he often likes being around them. Cinnabar is possibly his favorite half-youma, though he has only met two and heard of two more. Their lot is difficult, and he finds interest in easing it.

Cycle of Replenishment: In his hometown, Shale and his brother erected a makeshift altar out in the woods of a few large rocks heaped on top of another. On the flat rock crowning the cairn, the pair would kill live trappings such as rabbits or mice in a particular fashion. Each kill is administered using a handmade knife to the heart of the creature, where the blood was then drained into a small vial for the brothers. The creature's body is then prepared by first flaying it open, and then arranging the gizzards in a circle surrounding the body before the pair salt it and leave.
If their offering is accepted, then upon returning the following day, they would find the corpse disturbed and eaten if not wholesale vanished to the creatures of the forest. If their offering was accepted, the pair would kneel and uncork their respective blood vials to trace the animal's ichor over their tattoos. If their offering was refused, the blood was instead cast out onto the altar to dry.
The purpose of this ritual is to maintain the balance of their own spirits with the elements of nature, and to reconcile any imbalances that may have disrupted their souls. In Shale's case, it absolves him of his accidental kills in his hunting ventures.

_______Slate Blackwell -- Shale's only brother, and longtime companion in the small, isolated town in which they were raised. With Shale consistently quiet, Slate soon found voice to fill the void of quietude that often settled between the two. Shale never minded it - his brother often chose intellectual conversation and sharing of research over inanity so well favored by their peers. They endured an ostracized life in the case of friends and schoolmates, but it lacked the same impact on Shale as it had for Slate.
To their father's chagrin, Slate was born markedly smaller than their first child, and grew slowly. Slate was plagued wit medical issues when young, prompting his parents to often venture beyond the meager scope of medicine available in their small town to cross the thick of forest into Destiny City. Occasionally they would send Shale on such a task, which he never minded for the great stretches of solitude inherent in the request - and the boon of helping his brother.
In their latter years, Shale soon devoted himself to assisting and protecting his brother in a more physical sense, as it soon became obvious that Slate's magnetic personality secured him a comfortable social standing, as opposed to his brother's branding of mute or dumb. With the advent of the Bloodlust came their solidification of their impeccable bond, which only grew with the continued embarking on their strange and devious path.
Shale only regrets that he let his belief supersede his blood.

How the Mighty Fall - Some agents of the Negaverse finally decide to rid themselves of Chariklo. They lure her to a theme park ride with the bait of Amytis and attempt to take her down.
Keep Your Halos Tight - After ratting out his friend to the Negaverse, Umber was taken into a small squad to either capture or kill Sandrine. The group tracked her to the University where they managed to trap her inside the gymnasium, but she squeezed off a distress signal that complicated matters greatly.
And of Your Own Free Will - Ploutonion and Laurelite plot to start a large battle for a staged force-corruption. Umber, newly minted as a captain, approaches the scene in a fit of rage and aims to take the silver-tongued squire down himself.
For a Job Well Done - Cinnabar received accolades for her progress in killing turncoats. Umber is invited to participate, along with numerous other individuals due to his assistance in the endeavor. He attends, albeit sleeplessly.
PTA: Platform - Umber receives assistance with arranging an operation. The goal is to reap starseeds, but there are unforeseen complications. A lieutenant is stabbed, princesses arrive, the consoles go haywire, and that's not the last of the interruptions...
