Glyph of Hun'Afin, Gift of Lolth

Qu'ellar Hun'Afin is made from the stalagmites and stalactites of the great Undergaia. A great spider is carved into the surface of the foremost pillars, and through the grooves runs the purple flames of faerie fire, giving the impression that a massive neon arachnid is eternally defending the estate.

The central portion of the house is a massive stalactite, its point depending 50 feet above the ground. In there reside the Hun'Afin nobles and their servants. Two smaller stalactites flank the main one, and four sentinel stalagmites rear up in square formation around this, making seven major towers in all. Commoner mages, soldiers, craftsmen, slaves and livestock dwell in these or in numerous smaller buildings huddled around the roots of the stalagmites.

Walls and defenses exist around the estate, courtesy of founder Matron Kikato. Many of the defenses cannot be seen and their very nature is a house secret. Wards are in place around the house to prevent scrying, teleportation, and planar travel into the house, especially from the Plane of Shadow.

Of the soldiery, there are 125 trained Drow and 125 hobgoblins and goblins.
There are areas for lizard breeding, fish farming, weaving, carving and such. A smithy provides enchanted armor and weapons. Hidden rivers and springs provide fresh water. As with most noble houses, Hun'Afin is virtually self-sufficient.

Although the house is still small, the family is ever searching for more Drow. From slaves to nobles, Hun'Afin will even adopt even the renegade or the Houseless. The family prefers stealth over force, but accepts all so long as they are truly loyal (and ask first).

Background

Quote:

Long ago, a renegade Drow appeared in the city. She wandered around for years before anyone bothered to take her in. The minor house Hun'Duis, Sisterhood of the Whip, adopted her as they needed another noble female. The renegade was known as "Zilv'Driira," also known as the Forgotten Mother. At the first opportunity, she struck the Hun'Duis matron, took over the house and renamed it Hun'Afin: the name of her own family.

Hun'Afin ascended slowly over the years, eventually reaching the ranks of the royal top eight. Shortly after it reached Fourth Rank, Matron Kikato adopted the commoner mage Jys'yl as the First Daughter of the House. Kikato disappeared not long afterward and left instructions that Jys'yl was the new Matron...and now she is gone, a new Matron having risen to figurehead the Second House of Ulorbbath.

"What!", exclaimed Veldrin as he discovered the Matron's lifeless body mere feet away from the training hall's door. He rushed to her side, searching her for wounds while feeling for a pulse.

"DAMMIT!!!", he mentally shouted, grieving silently for the fallen matriarch. "This cannot be happening! I've worked too hard...come TOO DAMN FAR!...for things to end like this. This House is MINE, and I'LL BE DAMNED if I'm going to just watch it crumble, and end up a HOUSELESS NOBODY! Nobody must know what happened this day, even if it means running things myself!", the assassin thought as he lifted Jys'yl's limp form from the floor, chanting the words to a spell of invisibility.

He ducked into a little used service corridor, melting into the shadows, traveling through the dark, mirror realm that is the Shadow Fringe, darting for the Matron's private chambers.

He rummaged through the room, already in a state of total disarray, searching frantically for the runestone that would allow him to telepathically contact the warlock of the house through the House Brooches that the nobles wore.

"Warlock," he began as he found the stone, initiating the sending spell ensorcelled within. "Matron dead, TELL NOBODY! Return swiftly. The evidence must be covered. No one must ever know!"

Within an hour of receiving the sending, Valagh landed on the balcony attached to the Matron's private suite. The barrier that prevented all but the Matron of the House from entering via the balcony had already been lowered, allowing the warlock swift access to the bedchamber.

The half-fiend looked around the room, taking in the view of the luxurious boudoir. His gaze quickly found the matriarch's corpse laid out on the bed. "Heh, looks like Kikato had some real taste in decorations. So, how did it happen, and just what in the Hells are we going to do about this?" he queried, indicating Jys'yl's lifeless carcass.

"Well, first of all, I'll be running the show around here. We'll animate her corpse," Veldrin said, sneering in disgust as he vomited the pronoun, "just for show, until I find a more suitable puppet to act as my mouthpiece. As for just how we got into this mess in the first place, THE DUMB b***h POISONED HERSELF! If she knew damned well that the rings she wore were poison delivery systems, then why in the ******** would she chew on the damned things?

I'll leave you to take care of the body. I'm going to look for our new 'Matron'. There will be a slave by the door to perform any errands you need done. Cast a sending if you need to contact me."

Chalthara did not yet know that Matron Jys'lyl was deceased. In fact, she had just finished praying and was making her way across a courtyard to the compound's main stalactite. This was not to say that she was ignorant: she was very much alert, watching her surroundings. She was newly adopted to House Hun'Afin, after a prolongued absence spent in the hostile, "lawless" city of Au Shinduago, and was still becoming accustomed to the place. She had never lived in such luxury, for her House had been a merchant House of average means before its fall...certainly not one of the Ruling Houses.

By now, there was probably little memory of House Kenrahel. Even those that had destroyed it and would recognize her could not get to her now that she was a member of the Second House. They would not dare.

She heard shouting from far off, but thought little of it. They were in Ulorbbath; such sounds were not uncommon. Whatever it was, it did not concern a newly adopted cleric. She would watch, wait, and bide her time as it was her nature to do.

Upon entering the main stalacmite, she noticed that there was something of an eerie silence. Something was amiss, but she could not tell exactly what it happened to be. Therefore, she made her way back towards her chambers, the only sounds she could hear being the swish of her leaf green robes about her legs and the soft padding of her boots against the smooth floor.

Veldrin combed the corridors of the compound, observing the passing females of the house, judging them based on their appearance, bearing and demeanor, as he searched to find one to set up as the new face of the House.

His search took him first through areas such as the House Sanctuary and the priestess' living area, weeding out potential cantidates to become the puppet governor as he went along, and spread out through the outlying spires, taking into consideration even some of the lay servants, although none truly stood out.

He finally entered the main courtyard, as he prepared to search the main stalactite. After hours of searching, Veldrin came across his primary cantidate for the position, a young, junior priestess that had been only recently adopted into the house...one who Jys'yl herself had plans to groom as a successor.

Stepping out of the shadows, and making his presence known, Veldrin called out, "You, there! New girl! Come with me, your presence is required in the Matron's private audience chamber." He led a swift pace through the corridors of the central complex, seeking the secret passageway that led to the private audience chamber. He stopped, briefly, once they were out of earshot of others, to whisper in Chalthara's ear, "There is an offer for you that you cannot refuse..."

Sy sat in her room in the dark. Going into a meditative trance. Her mind wandered back to her old house, through the corridors, and into the rooms. Gazing at the familiar faces. Both the ones with the snarled faces like her mother and sisters and the ones with the monotone faces like the commoners and her brothers. And the exceptional face with an emotion Sy could never put her finger on, which was the face her father would often give her.

Then her trance became one of violence. She watched as her House was infiltrated and burned to the ground. Then an image of Jys'yl falling to the ground and a feeling of sorrow and dread came to her as Veldrin's angry face came at her with a raised weapon.

Sy woke up in a cold sweat as there was a meow at her window. Sy rolled over in her bed and got up to open the window to allow Nevron entry, "Nevron! Dos ph' rath ji ulnin! Vel'bol xunus dos ragar?"

The kitten meowed and shared her a message telepathically. Once Sy retrieved the message she then nodded her head,

***EDITED!!!

"Ji ol zhah seke."

Nevron looked up at Sy and meowed at her. Picking him up into her arms, Sy and Nevron went back to her bed. Sy placed Nevron onto her lap and began stroking him in thought, "Dos ph' xunor, ussta lince'sa. Usstan zhal naut joros whol natha elamshinae dal dos jala draeval ulnin. Dos inbal tlus alus whol awhile. Usstan began ulu eszak."

At this point, Nevron had already purred himself to sleep. Sy looked down with a smile, "V'dre nin ssinssrigg. Ka dos satiir l' ssrig'luin ulu z'haan bauth kus uns'aa natha char'riss lu' Dorn doer pahntar l' window whol dos."

Sy then moved Nevron from her lap to her pillow and kissed his head before getting up and stretching. She looked around the room, found her gear on a chair, and began strapping herself up. She needed to get out of the House for a bit herself. She began to feel the familiar restlessness when she was in Rilynviir. However, the drowess had learned her lesson when it came to impatience.

Sy then walked out of her room, placed an enchanted lock on the door, and began making her way out of the house. The guards she passed seemed a little cautious of her after what they apparently heard from rumor, what she had done to the commander. Dismissing the odd actions of the guards, Sy continued on her way through the corridors.

When Veldrin first called to her, she thought him most disrespectful. No matter how highly ranked he was, he had no right to speak to her that way. Although she was a bit less zealous than most of her fellow priestesses, she did hold that males should at be courteous towards the females that ran the city. To offend her, a newly adopted member of the House, was something she didn't think intelligent. She would have to correct him.

That was, until something he said caught her attention. It had to catch her attention.

She shivered as his words fell upon her ear. There is an offer for you that you cannot refuse...

She did not smile, nor did she frown. She merely watched Veldrin as they continued to make their way to the Matron's chambers. "And what is this offer, pray tell?" she asked. "Is this something only the Matron Mother might tell me, or do you have knowledge of it also?"

Of course, she had no idea that the Matron was dead, or that Veldrin plotted to seize rulership of the House. This was merely the daily intrigue of living in the Second House, as far as Chalthara knew, albeit with a bit more excitement than usual.

The new Patron responded with only a knowing grin as they arrived at their destination. A nearly imperceptible gesture from Veldrin caused the door to slide shut behind them and lock itself.

He strode regally toward the empty throne, looking completely at home as he seated himself in it.

"How would you like to become the new Matron?"

A sly grin crossed the assassin's visage as he imagined what could possibly be running through the young priestess' mind at the moment.

Chalthara regarded Veldrin coldly for a moment, thinking that this was just a very cruel joke. To offer a newcomer to the House so much power would be foolish! He was a male, of course, but Chalthara had been led to believe that male drow were far more intelligent and cunning than the zealous priestesses gave them credit for. They had to engineer their own survival, and sometimes undermine their "superiors" in more creative ways than having them murdered, as a First Daughter might do to a Matron.

She approached the throne slowly, small, slight form nearly dwarfed by it. Her crimson eyes narrowed at Veldrin. Was he telling the truth? No, he couldn't be. In the short time she had been a member of House Hun'Afin, she had been able to glean the fact that he knew how to deal with power. He was cunning. He had something else up his sleeve...

"What's the catch?" she said, impatient. There was no beating around the bush with her.
PostPosted: Fri Sep 11, 2009 7:15 pm

Veldrin found Chalthara's direct approach refreshing. It wasn't often, after all, that he could have a discussion with a female where he didn't have to pussyfoot around a subject.

"The house is in need of new leadership, well, a new figurehead to be specific. You see, I intend to rule the House, though none of the other Houses will accept a male ruling a Qu'ellar. This is where you come in...I need a female to serve as the face of the House in public matters. I need someone to represent me on the Council of Nobles, in the unlikely event that it ever convenes."

"Ah," said Chalthara. "I knew this was too good to be true."

She, too, appreciated straightforwardness. Any formality or euphamism was superfluous and bothersome. Perhaps she had been away from Ulorbbath for too long, away from the complicated machinations of the Spider Queen. Chalthara could be as cunning as she wished, given her above average intelligence, but she was glad that Veldrin said what he wanted to say and got it overwith quickly. That was the way things operated in the world outside this city.

Chalthara was not beyond being power-hungry. All drow were, and she was no different. She offered Veldrin a hint of a very rare smile. "I am pleased with your choice." There was a hint of laughter to her voice.

Being the figurehead of the Second House would not be terribly different to her from being one of the House's priestesses. But it would be different to others. She would enjoy the station without a real increase in responsibility or in the intensity of her duties to Lolth.

"I accept your offer."
PostPosted: Sun Sep 13, 2009 5:07 pm

"Excellent," Veldrin said with a pleased smile. "Now there is only the matter of publicly announcing your 'ascension'. Jys'yl is dead," the Patron continued, his expression shifting to one of detached indifference with a hint of disgust. "Due to the circumstances of her demise, it is in the best interests of the House that the exact manner of her death not be revealed to the public. It would most likely have a detrimental affect on our standing should it be made known that our late Matron poisoned herself through sheer carelessness."

"Matrons are killed frequently. Let them think what they wish. There will be no denying that I have risen to fill Jys'lyl's position." Chalthara was more detatched than dsigusted. Frankly, she had not known the former Matron well, and had no cause to wish her death or to grieve for her. Jys'lyl's death was simply a fact to be considered in Chalthara and Veldrin's plans.

"How shall this be publicly announced?" she asked. "Perhaps I should be asking if is should be publicly announced."
